#24 of Life In College

Ah, finally glad to wrap this up. I will be continuing Thomas' story with a different setting a few new characters, but I am unsure of when I'll be starting work on that.

School has just started, I mean it's my second day started up, but I'm not expecting much trouble this year ^_^ So with hope I can get this new series cranked up soon and get rolling with that.

And even though I've just now got this series finished after such a long break, I no sudden surprises will crop up and put delays on my writing.

I very clearly remember when my phone rang the day of my graduation.

It was early, for starters. But as my phone exploded with noise and the need for immediate attention, I sat up with a snarl and a groan and slapped at my desk. I felt it under my paw and held it up to my face, almost fully awake now. I could see the lighest shade of sunlight starting to peek through my half-closed blinds, but my attention was drawn to my phone.

The incoming call was listed as "C. Dufrane" but I didn't hesitate to answer the call.

"Carter," I rubbed my face, "It's..." I puased, looking at my clock, "7:38 in the morning. What in gods name do you want?"

"Ah, nice to hear from you as well Thomas," replied the other voice in the line.

I gave a low growl but swung my legs out of my bed and stood up, rubbing my face again. "What can I do for you boss?" I asked my phone.

"Sharpen up that attitude for starters," replied Carter. "What I'm about to tell you is important, and I need you to listen."

"Hm," I grunted as I picked up a pair of jeans, and put my phone on speaker and dropped it to my bed. "Shoot," I replied as I tugged on my pants.

"Alright then," replied the other end of the line, "First off, I assume your alone?"

My pants were on now and I turned to look at Tanner's bed, which was empty. "Yeah," I replied. I pulled on a shirt next.

"Good," replied Carter. "Now then, I don't actually have much time, so I'll tell you what I need to and then leave the rest up to you."

"Right," I said. I snatched up my wallet and and then picked up my phone, taking it from speaker and putting it back to my ear.

"First off," Carter said, "If you check you bank account your latest payment should be in there, all accounted for. Second, I'll be sending you a list of three names, and your objectives will be attached. After this phone call, the next time you'll see me is in person, most likely in Cork, Ireland."

"Moving on," I said. I left my dorm now and went down the hall, thinking I would walk around the school grounds while Carter talked.

"Attitude attitude," Carter said, "Now then, we at the Center are calling a close to Operation Bloodline. You, AT, and CS have all played your parts well, and the Center seems to have all the DNA and data they need for now."

"Alright," I rubbed the back of my neck now, my mind briefly drifting to Rel.

"And since your operation is complete, that also means we'll be pulling you boys out of there soon, and bringing you back home," Carter said.

Now I came to a slow, then stopped. "So..." I paused, thinking again of Rel, "That means back to New York then?"

"So the Center can debrief you, yes," Carter's voice said. "After that, normal operations will resume, until the Convening on December."

"Alright," I started walking again. "Anything else?"

"That's all," Carter said. "You boys'll get picked up in three days, after your graduation at the college. Then like I said normal operations will resume, until the Convening in December. If anything comes up, we'll be sure to let you know."

"Alright then," I put my free paw into my pocket.

"You've done a grand job, Thomas," Carter's voice said, "I'm sure the Center will recognize this come Christmas time."

A click followed, and I took my phone from my ear and pocketed it.

I walked slowly down the path that ran through the campus center now as the sun slowly rose into the sky.

Ah, but I realize that any of you reading this may not know what any of that conversation meant. To put it simply, Carter Dufrane is my actual boss, as opposed to the man who owns the surf shop that I work at. The surf shop is a cover for my actual job, and going to college was also sort of a cover. My actual job, as unbelievable as it may sound, is a job as an assassin. More specifically, an assassin of witches.

Carter Dufrane is a member of the Center for Fur and Witch Relations, or the CFWR. The Center is located in New York in northern Queens, and deals with the relations of fur and witches. Through time witches and furs haven't always seen eye to eye, and for years now the Center has been bringing together the leaders of various countries and the witch King's and Queens throughout the world.

But not all of the witch Clans have allied themselves with the Center, and as a result we have a small branch dedicated to eliminating the leading witch Clans that oppose the Center. But now I'm sure your asking, what do the witches do to distance themselves from the Center and the rest of the world?

Witches who don't ally themselves with the Center tend to keep to their traditional Clans, living in the east, in places like Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania. They live in small villages and towns in the hills and valleys of those east states, where the U.S.A and the Center can't really do much to reach them. I've been with the Center since the age of eighteen, and for the past four, almost five, years now, I've been aiding the Center with taking out the enemy witching Clans and families.

So what do all of my sexual escapades have to do with killing witches? As Carter said, myself, Anji and Cale have all been with plenty of the girls on the college, but the entire thing was just a large experiment to see what genes of half-witch half-furs could transfer to any non-wtich blooded furs. So Anji, Cale and I signed up for the experiment. We'd all live in California for a few years and, for a lack of better words, fuck like bunnies. Small DNA samples from all the ladies we were with would be sent to the Center for an analysis, and the Center would go from there.

So now, with that operation complete, it was back to New York for more witch hunting. Did I ever mention what my father did? Well he hunted witches. My mother never hunted witches, but for the better part of fourteen years she worked as an office aid for the Center, where she met my real father. For the next few years he continued to hunt witches, until he and my mother split apart a few years later when he resigned from the Center.

I ran a paw through my hair, and pulled my phone back out. I rolled through my call log until I found Anji's number, dialed, and put the phone to my ear.

* * *

A hour later, Anji, Cale, and I stood outside of the football field. The wolf was dressed in shorts and a tank top and the brown dog wore a set of jeans a button down shirt.

I had brought Anji and Cale up to speed on what Carter had told me, and Cale backed me up when he said that his mother, who worked for the Center, was organizing a plane that would be heading to California by tomorrow to pick the three of us up.

"So I guess the funs over huh?" Anji said. The wolf leaned up against the chain link fence, his arms folded over his chest.

"S'pose so," Cale said with a smirk. "Fun while it lasted though."

"Sure was," I said with a smile.

We shared a brief laugh, then Cale looked at me. "What names did Carter shoot you in that text?"

"Ah," I pulled my phone out now, and pulled up the message I had been sent, "These here," I said holding my phone out.

Cale took it and looked it over, then passed his phone to Anji. The wolf growled as he read the three names the the objectives that were under it, then handed it back to me.

"Something rubbing you the wrong way?" I asked my friend.

"That Andrea Hail," the wolf said. "I remember it from a few years ago, when we were all still training, up in Albany?"

"Where everyone trains," Cale nodded now.

"Yeah but Hail," Anji said with a thoughtful tone. He was quiet for a moment, then he grunted and said, "Jacob Hail. That's Andrea's father. A banker if I'm not mistaken, ran a small firm in New Rochelle, where the Camshaw Gang hangs out."

"Didn't you kill her father?" I asked.

"Did," Anji nodded now. "Two years ago, when we were heading back to Queens from New Roch'."

"I guess daddy's little girl is causing trouble," Cale said.

"Guess so," Anji said. He glanced at me now and asked, "Who's supposed to handle who?"

"Doesn't say," I replied, looking at the wolf. "But if you want to handle the Hail girl, I won't stop you."

Anji smirked now, and I looked at Cale. "Pick you poison," I held my phone out to the dog.

He looked at it for a moment, then said, "Joan Langston. Sounds fancy, ya' know?"

"Sure mate," I shrugged with a small smile. I looked at the last name I was left with. Cecilia Jones, who lived in a manor home in Brooklyn, New York. "Brooklyn," I said out loud. "I never liked that end of the state."

"I never liked any of the north parts of the state to be honest," Cale said.

"Same," Anji said with a smirk. "All the rogues are up there, and those fucking gangs."

"Camshaw's, Red Fists, the Dancing Snakes," I muttered. "Just to name a few."

"Camshaw's are who I'm partially worried about," said Anji. "They've got all that influence with there underground."

"Just because they have such a large reach in New Rochelle," said Cale. "All those bank connections. You know money can buy anyone now a days."

"And money can't buy us?" I asked with a smile.

"For the right amount, sure it can," Anji smirked now, and Cale smiled, pushing up his glasses.

We were all quiet for a moment, and Anji pulled out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. Cale took one but I held up a paw to wolf, and tucked my paws into my pockets.

"Your mum coming to the graduation?" I asked Anji.

"Mm," the wolf nodded as he lit his smoke, then took a small breath. "Coming round this afternoon," he let the could out in a huff, "Then dad'll be coming back soon."

"Where was he gone to?" Cale asked. The dog tucked a paw into his pants pocket and took a pull from his cigarette.

"Cyprus," said the wolf, "Apparently there was a report of Nurwall activity out there, and the Center sent him and his unit to check it out."

"Nurwall?" Cale let his cigarette hang from his lip, "Aren't they a neutral Clan?"

"I thought so too," Anji nodded, "But there was kind of "anomaly" out there, so they sent my old man and his unit out there."

Again we were all quiet, but then Cale said, "I guess I'll see you boys at graduation then."

"Yeah," I nodded, my paws tucked into my pockets.

"I'll be there," the wolf said with a smile.

"Then It's back to New York," said Cale.

"I'll see you guys there then," I said.

The day went fast after Anji, Cale and myself met that morning. The sun hung high through the day, but since classes were cancelled, I kept busy with things like packing, practicing my walk to the stage, and remembering which paw to shake with and which paw to take with.

Rel also kept a small part of my mind occupied. I was thinking about New York now, and what would await Anji, Cale and I when we got back. We would more than likely split up once we were back in Queens, where the Center was located. Cale would more than likely find his mother first, who worked as an intelligence officer. She had always pushed him to read and study as a kid, which is why he's always got his nose buried in a book. Anji had said he and his father would be sailing this coming summer, but now that plan may have changed with Carter's call. I myself had been planning to visit New York, but only to take Rel with me and see the sights. But now, my plans had ultimately changed.

Graduation was, for whatever unholy reason, scheduled on the same day as the final day of school. We were 'required by law' to attend, you know how that goes. But why graduation was the same night was beyond me. We couldn't have a few days to relax after those grueling exams? Nope. Apparently the dean and teachers didn't realize that a few of the students had witches to hunt in a week.

But graduation came around, and as I stood at my mirror pulling my collar straight, a knock rapped its way onto my door. I scowled at my un-straigthened tie for a second before I left the mirror and pulled open the door to fine Rel. The snow leopard was dressed in a dark dress that stopped at her shoulders, reveling the top of her breasts, and stopped just past her ankles. Dangling from her ears were two small half moons earrings, and a set of light silver shoes to match were on her feet.

We stood there for a moment, staring at each other in silence. But then Rel gave a small laugh, and reached out to take my tie in her paws. She fused with it a moment, then smoothed it over my white shirt, and laid it flat.

"You look quite dashing," she said.

"Your flattering me," I said with a small smile. "And you look more than radiant yourself little miss."

She blushed now, leaving her paws on my chest. I smiled again, and took a step closer to her. She closed the space in between us without a second of hesitation, and I felt her warm lips press against mine, sending that all to familiar sense of warmth shooting through my body.

I slipped my paws around Rel's waist and held her to me as we kissed, but it was short lived. She pulled away from me, a small giggle leaving her lips as she said, "Come on, don't mess up my lipstick."

"You'd look jus fine without it," I told her. She blushed again, but took my paw in hers and said,

"Come on, Anji and his parents are outside waiting on us."

"They here already?" I asked her. I snatched up my dress jacket and pulled my collar down, then snapped my dorm door shut with a click.

"My parents are here too," Rel said.

"Ah," I followed the snow leopard down the hall, pulling the cuffs of my jacket down to my wrists as I flicked the collar straight.

Down the hall and out the door I did indeed find Anji and his parents, as well as Rel's parents, waiting for me. But standing near Anji, holding a handkerchief that looked wet already, was my own mother, dressed in a simple two piece grey dress.

She only had to meet my eyes before she started crying again, and as I put my face in my paw I heard Anji muttering a "It's all good Ms. O," under his breath. I hugged my mom as she let loose the waterworks into my shoulder, patting her on the back as I also muttered, "Mom, geez come on."

"I'm sorry sweetheart!" she looked at now, her eyes red and misty with the threat of more tears, "Your just such a big boy now, graduating college and all that...!" and then she was off again, putting the handkerchief over her eyes and she wrapped me in a hug that could have killed.

"S'all good mum," I breathed out.

The walk to the campus' auditorium was short, and the dark sky overhead helped to cool off the night. As we all trickled in, I slowed down some, then stopped as Rel and I passed thorough the door. I took her paw more firmly in mine, then told my mom I would catch up with her in a minute. Anji caught my eye and then wolf nodded to me. I nodded back, then lead Rel back outside.

"Tom, whats, whats up?" she looked at me, a small puzzled look on her face.

I was quiet for a moment was I lead her to the side of the building, and then looked around to make sure we were alone. "Ok," I rubbed the back of my neck, then let out a small breath. "I have something I need to tell you," I meet her eyes now, and "quickly said, "and its not bad!" I held up a paw, "I just need you to believe me for a few seconds."

She looked at me for a moment, then said, "I'm not sure what your saying."

"Just," I paused, "Hear me out," I looked at her, my ice blue eye looking into her bright green eyes."

"Ok," she nodded, and took my paw in hers. She gave it a squeeze, and I felt a small surge of courage run through me.

"First off," I let go of her paw, then reached up to my eyes. I poked one with a finger, then pinched it, and felt the contact lens come loose. I dropped it to the ground, then removed the other one, and looked at Rel. "These are my real eyes," I said.

She starred at me. Now my eye were a yellow color as opposed to there original blue. But walking around with yellow eyes would have seemed strange, and I'd worn contacts for the majority of my stay on Green Pine's campus.

"You have yellow eyes," Rel said.

"Yes, I do," I nodded now.

Then she asked what I knew was coming. "Why?"

"Ah," I looked away briefly, and rubbed the back of my neck. "You uh," I looked back at her, and held up a paw, "you probably won't believe this, and you'll just think I'm crazy, but I'll say it anyways."

Rel then slightly surprised me by taking my upheld paw in her own paws, and giving it a squeeze. "I don't think your crazy," she whispered.

I looked at her, and felt my face pick up the slightest bit of color. "Alright," I nodded, taking her paws in my own. "Then bear with me. I don't actually 'live' in California, and I don't actually 'attend' Green Pine University. Myself and two other friends of mine, or I could call them co-workers really, the three of us were part of a kind of experiment, to see if half-witch and half-fur's could mate and interbreed with pure furs to create half-witches through birth.

"And with that being said, I'm also a half-wtich. That's why my eyes are yellow. My mother is also a witch, and my real father was a pure blood. They had me, a half-witch, but I'm one of the 'good' witches. There are bad witches, and bad witch Clans, who want to destroy the world, and make it one giant slave world. And," I paused, and Rel was only quiet for a moment before she squeezed my paws, "And I hunt witches for the organization that I represent."

And now I waited, and Rel looked back. She looked into my yellow eyes, then, so quietly I almost didn't hear her, she asked me,

"You hunt witches as in you kill them?"

It caught me more off guard than I'd expected. I was quiet for a moment, my heart slamming against my ribs, but I answered her with "Yes."

Again she was quiet, but then she surprised me yet again by smiling, and squeezing my paw. "Is that why you wanted to visit New York?" she asked me in her quiet but sweet voice, "So you could check up on this, witch hunting you do?"

Now I felt my cheeks color, almost feeling guilty for what I did as a real living, but I said, "Actually, I was hoping they could give me more time to spend with you."

Yet again there was more silence, but then Rel said, "What do you mean 'more time' to spend with me?"

"Because," I paused, "Because after this experiment was over, my co-workers and I were gong back to New York. I can't really tell you much, its like a code that we have to follow, but that's where we really live and work is there, not in California," I paused, and now I squeezed her paw, feeling my heart beat faster, "But I'm sure there's still time for me to contact them, tell them to extend my time here, so I..."

But then she stopped me mid-sentcne with a kiss. For a second it all felt so cliché. Here I was, the storybook hero pouring out his true self, his true story to the girl he loved, and as she listed with bated breath, he started to get flustered, and then she stopped his words with a kiss.

Then time clicked back into reality, and as Rel pulled away, she whispered to me, "Wherever you go is where I go."

I starred at her. She had again caught me off guard. But then, what else was new with her? She was always good at catching me off guard. How she laughed at the bad jokes I told, how she would take my paws when I was stressing and calm me down, how she could continuously surprise me with new ways of pleasure and excitement, both in and out of the bedroom. And now here she stood yet again, her paws on my face, and she had surprised me yet again.

"You," I paused, a nervous smile coming to my face, "You don't care about what I just said."

"You said you killed witches," she said with a quick and hushed voice, "But, but it's only the bad ones, right? You said so yourself there are good witches and bad witches."

"Yes," I nodded now, and put my paw over hers. "Only the bad witches."

"Then thats, all I really need," she said. She closed the space between us with another kiss, and although it was brief it told me so much. For all my dark secrets, for my dark job, my dark past, and my heavy burdens, this girl loved me. Rel, who had seen me at my best and seen me at my worst. She stood here with me now, her lips slowly leaving mine, and stood with me as all of my flaws, my errors, my darkness swirled around me. She stood here, and she silently accepted me for who I really was. She looked at me, those emerald green eyes sparkling in the dark night, and said,

"Come on," with a small smile, "lets go find our seats."
