#1 of Land Before Time: A Mother's Song

Earth shakes shattered the earth, lightning flashed through the sky. A longneck cried out in agony and grief as contractions racked her body.

The land had changed, her mate had set out in search for a better place to raise their young, but the path back to them was gone, lost to the great change, there was little chance he had survived.

Another flash in the sky, the longneck roared, but she couldn't tell if it was from the agony of the contraction, or the pain in her heart. She slumped to the ground at let the rain pour over her shattered self, its coolness the only sense of relief from this heat consuming her body.

She had never thought her life would come to this. She remembered when she had first met Bron, how innocent and carefree they had been back then, the joy they had felt when they first discovered she was with eggs. But the world was changing, what she had once thought of as her home was now no place to start a family; she had not known then the pain of her contractions would be no less violent than the quakes shattering the earth. It had all seemed so simple, but all that had crumbled like the world around her, all that existed inside her was grief and pain, both so overpowering, they threatened to drown out that small whisper of hope still deep within her heart.

She rested her head on the ground, tears clouding her eyes. She begged for the pain to take her, to let her sink into the earth where all things fade, there was no more for her, no more she could take.

But then she remembered Bron's voice, telling her if he didn't return, to continue, to find a better life for their children, to find the Great Valley, where they could grow up in peace.

That's what this was for, the children inside her; the eggs that were not yet hatched. She pulled a foot under her, rising herself into the air, she would fight for them, fight for them to survive.

The pain was excruciating, she roared into the sky begging for it to end. But this time she knew it was not for nothing, for through her the great circle of life had begun anew, and in that moment of darkness, she felt a touch of light, the light of a new life being born.

"Hang on little one, you'll be here with mother soon."

And through the pain, she felt such love for the little one inside her, a love like a promise that would never die.

My Littlefoot...
