#5 of Just the Beginning (Japanese translation)

5/15 chapters translated, hm...

I spent over 8 hours on this chapter. This is actually turning out to be a lot more work than I thought, whoopsies

I find myself having to streamline past/present tenses in the original Japanese and actually add in some descriptions so it reads easier in English. It's really funny how often you can find yourself completely understanding something in another language but still utterly struggle to put it to words in your mother language. Figuring out how to incorporate and translate slang terms has been a wild ride too.

I think I'm doing a better job of making the content clear though? I never claimed to be a great translator, but I do hope to improve.

Leave a comment if you so desire. For me or for the original Japanese author ^^

Also I find Mikkun to be best boy, even over Kiyoto-san xD

It was that hot time of year where high school students no longer need to wear blazers as part of their uniform.

My school has been all fired up for the upcoming sports festival. But I was completely uninterested, so all there was for me to do was kill time in the classroom when it wasn't my turn to participate in one of the events.

That's how it's always been. Up until this year.

Seiya: "KICK ASS YUJI!"

I was abducted by Seiya, and found myself standing on the edge of the school's athletic field. I was smack dab in the middle of the other rabble who were cheering loudly for their teammates.

I felt painfully out of place among all the rowdy jocks and the gals who still had their hair and makeup done even though they're in gym clothes.

Some gal: "Hey Jun-kun, you're always with Seiya aren't you? You two together?"

Jun: "T-Together?"

Seiya: "That's right! We're together! Cause we're Team Ayu!"

Some gal: "Jun's an Ayu fan? Who'da thought~"

Seiya was rubbing my shoulders as he talked. I was sweating like crazy right then, hopefully I wasn't being a total nervous wreck >.>

Still, ever since I made friends with Seiya I've found myself talking to so many other people. Even though he's been randomly pranking me up until just recently.

Seiya: "Next up is the team relay race, so do your best and slay out there!"

Jun: "Uh, I'll try."

Seiya: "Aw, it'll be fine, you'll be great. I'll meet back up with you once you're done."

Jun: "Yeah, okay, I'll do my best!"

It shouldn't be all that bad.

It was just some running. I might not have been all that fast, but it wasn't like I was slow either.

I went to my designated point on the track. Before I knew it another student came running at me and passed me the baton. All that I had to do then was run to where Seiya was standing on the track and pass the baton to him.

I didn't want my classmates to bitch at me after so I decided to dash at full force.

Once this was done I'd be free from having to do any more-

Jun: "Ah!"

Seiya: "Jun?!"

With all the finesse of an elementary school student, I pathetically managed to trip behind Seiya, unable to get back up on my disoriented legs.

Seiya: "Oh shit, are you okay?"

Jun: "I-I'm sorry Seiya."

Seiya: "Don't worry I'll make up the lost time!"

Everyone around me burst into laughter, but somehow I was getting the feeling I was being stared at with judgmental eyes.

Why now, of all times, can't things be going well for me?

At the end of the sports festival

Seiya: "That was one sports festival, huh Jun?"

Jun: "Yeah..."

Seiya: "Aw, don't be so hard on yourself. All you did was trip."

Well sure, from Seiya's perspective it probably seemed like 'all I did was trip'. Doesn't he get what this feeling is like?

Some gal: "Seiya~ A bunch of us are going out to a karaoke place to celebrate. You wanna come?"

Seiya: "Sorry, I got a part time job after this."

Some gal: "For real? That sucks."

Seiya: "Yeah sorry about that. C'mon Jun, let's get going."

That's right, Seiya started a part time job at the same place as me. Today was a day we'd be working together.

Usually it was Seiya who pushed me to do things, but for a change it was me who guided him when we were at work, so I was planning to give it my all at work.

At their part time job

_ _

Business tended to be slow for weekday nights, so I had plenty of time to teach Seiya about this and that.

Jun: "The salads are premade here, so you just put on the dressing before you give it to the customer. If the premade salads run out, then we make them with the vegetables stored here."

Seiya: "Oh, okay."

Jun: "Oh, that's a customer's order bell ringing, so go out and get their order like I showed you yesterday."

Seiya: "Allllrighty."

Seiya was always loud at school, but apparently this was his first part time job. Seeing him work this diligently really painted him in a new light.

Not to mention seeing his big tail brush side to side as he walks nervously was kind of cute.

Full time worker: "Seiya-kun, the customer at table number one said they didn't order this. Do you think you messed up the order?"

One of our female full time employees took the untouched set that Seiya brought over back into the kitchen.

Seiya: "I'm so sorry!"

Full time worker: "Get it together, now. I'll prepare the new one. Jun, why don't you take it them when it's ready and apologize to them for the mix-up?"

Jun: "Yes ma'am."

Seiya had just recently started this job so you couldn't blame him for messing up. Even after getting used to the job mistakes still happened.

Seiya: "Uwah!"

Cue an unfortunate clattering sound.

Looked like over by the dishwasher Seiya dropped the loaded tray he was carrying.

Yeeeah that sort of thing also tended to happen.

Jun: "You alright?"

Seiya: "Sorry..."

Jun: "Make sure you don't hurt yourself. Here, wrap the shattered plate shards in this newspaper, and the broom's kept right here."

Seiya's ever-swaying tail was now hanging down limp.

Once the clock hit 10 P.M, the two of us got out of work.

Seiya: "Aaaah, I really messed shit up today."

Jun: "It's nothing to fret about. Hell, I was terrible at the job when I first started."

Seiya: "Oh, you were?"

Jun: "Plus, weren't you the one who told me not to be so hard on myself after my sports festival?"

There was something I realized today. It was completely normal to not be skilled at everything. I often feel like a total screw up and wish I was somebody or something different, but I knew that wasn't going to happen.

Sieya: "Yeah, can't deny that. Well, I guess I just have to give it my all next time!"

Jun: "Mhm. Oh hey, the last day of tests is tomorrow and we get out at noon. You want to go out and goof around somewhere with me? A different friend of mine will be coming though."

Seiya: "Where'll you be going?"

Jun: "Probably shopping at the Ion mall. Our field trip is coming up, so it might be good to get some stuff."

Seiya: "Oh! Yeah, I'll totally come!"

Jun: "Maaaaybe I'll let you pick out some clothes for me."

Seiya: "Just leave it to me!"

Perfect. I was just wanting to introduce Mikkun and Seiya to each other.

With our last midterm now over, Seiya and I headed straight for the train station, meeting up with Mikkun at the entrance.

Jun: "Hey Mikkun, sorry for the wait!"

Mitsuki: "Glad to see you survived midterms~ Woah, you're still in your school uniform!"

Jun: "Yeah, we left straight from school. Oh, this is my friend Seiya."

Seiya: "Nice to meet ya."

Two high school students heading straight to an Ion mall after school. We're like so totally living our best lives right now.

Mitsuki: "Nice to meet you~ Let's take the next train that comes!"

Jun: "Let's eat once we get there. Why don't we go to that new café you said opened on the first floor, Mikkun?"

Seiya: "There's a new café at Ion mall? That's got me curiosity."

Mitsuki: "There sure is~ I want to go too, so I guess that settles that."

After a particularly shaky ride on the train, we got on a bus that took us the rest of the way to the mall.

Ion Mall gloriously stood before us with all its clothes stores, restaurants, specialty shops and movie theater. There were a lot of other people here with a 'student who just finished their midterms' look to them.

The three of us entered the aforementioned café. We sat down at a table and gave out orders to the waiter.

Mitsuki: "Oh that's right, Seiya, you were also a fan of Ayumi Hamazaki? If you are then I know a great store for you."

Seiya: "For real? Let's go once were done eating then!"

Jun: "Yeah, it's like a secondhand good store. They sell tons of stuff, so there might be some rare Ayu goods there."

Sure were a lot of places to go to today.

Seiya: "You two sure know a lot of shops."

Mitsuki: "I guess so- I did use to hang out here with Junjun a lot."

Seiya: "You two are childhood friends then? Hey, don't you think the way Junjun squeals when he's surprised is really cute?"

Mitsuki: "Yeah, and he's cute in general too~"

Jun: "What?!"

Seiya: "I feel ya. You just want to squeeze his ass don't you?"

Mitsuki: "T-That's right, Mikkun! Seiya always sexually harasses me at school and it's really bothers me!"

Mitsuki: "Well there's nothing to be done about that, hehe."

Jun: "Why's that?!"

What does that even mean, 'cute'? I'd be much more flattered if I were called 'handsome' or 'hot'.

...On to the recycle shop.

It was a store with old clothes, instruments, card games, anime and pop star goods, and all kinds of weird miscellaneous things.

Seiya: "This is the special Ayu clear file that Jun has! The one that I really wanted but couldn't get a hold of!"

Jun: "Oh you're right, talk about lucky!"

Seiya: "There's a lot of rare Ayupan goods too!"

'Ayupan' was a sort of official chibi character version of Ayu. 'Pan' means 'bread' in Japanese, but Ayupan is not bread. The more you know.

Mitsuki: "Let's check out the clothes when we're done here. You want to get a swimsuit, right Junjun?"

Jun: "Ah, yeah. For the school field trip."

Seiya: "I can't wait to see Okinawa!"

Up until recently these sort of school events were just depressing to me, but thanks to Seiya I've started to look forward to this school trip.

And now that I really think about it, the sea, guys in swimsuits, going naked together in hot springs, and sleeping together in the same room at night...

Shit, am I going be able to keep it together?

Jun: "Uhhh, there's no way I can wear a flashy swimsuit like this."

Seiya: "Naw man, I'm telling you, you'll look swag in it!"

Mitsuki: "The pattern seems to go well with you too~"

Sure he was telling me I'd look good in it, but the only patterned clothing I've ever worn was underwear...

Though I'm so clueless with fashion that something like this might actually look totally normal.

Seiya: "Okay, then which of these two do you like more?"

Jun: "Maybe the polka dot one?"

Seiya: "Then let's go with these and this pair of pants!"

Mitsuki: "Makes you want to buy some shoes too, huh?"

My shopping bill just kept on increasing. But sometimes you just gotta shop.

Jun: "I'm going to go to the bathroom for a bit."

Mitsuki: "Okies~ I'll hold onto your stuff for you, so just meet me back at the swimsuit stand."

Seiya's Point of View

_ _

Mitsuki: "It's hot..."

Seiya: "Really?"

It wasn't hot at all but when you're fa... chubby, you tend to get hotter maybe?

Mitsuki: "When Junjun's done shopping let's head to the food court to get some ice cream."

Seiya: "But we literally just ate lunch a while ago!"

Mitsuki: "I have a second stomach for desert. But also, when Junjun said he was inviting a friend I thought 'Oh shit he's bringing a Yankee!'. So I was really relieved when I found out you're actually really easy to talk to~"

I ain't no fucking Yankee.

Well, this guy does seem to be the relaxed, chill-vibes type. Maybe tons of guys seem like Yankees to him.

Seiya: "Well gee, thanks."

Mitsuki: "How's Junjun been doing?"

Seiya: "Ah... I'd tell you but I only just started being friends with him."

Mitsuki: "Oh. Well, has he been able to smile?"

Seiya: "What?"

Mitsuki: "He's awkward and a real softie so he always puts on a show of being tough to protect himself from getting hurt."

He suddenly broke into that topic, still acting the exact same way as he did when the topic was ice cream. It was a bit creepy.

Mitsuki: "I also haven't heard much about him recently. Only just a while ago I called him for the first time in about a year. Earlier on in life we were always together. I know aaall about him."

Seiya: "Oh yeah, he mentioned that. Also hey, why is he still not back?"

Mitsuki: "I'm betting he went off to smoke~"

Seiya: "In his school uniform... Anyway, did you two get out of contact when you went to different high schools then?"

Mitsuki: "Yeah. I thought it'd be dangerous to let things stay like that."

Seiya: "Dangerous?"

Mitsuki: "It's complicated because there's a lot going on with how he acts and his family situation. But I think it's because he closes himself off so much that he actually needs people to come to him. The Junjun I knew never knew how to accomplish anything alone, make decisions alone, or do anything alone, really. Don't you think he's still like that?"

Seiya: "I wouldn't go that far..."

Actually, I got the impression from him that he liked being along. Or if anything, that he despised everyone around him.

But I guess that could all be chalked up to him being a shy person.

Or maybe he really was acting like that to protect himself from something...?

Mitsuki: "Sometimes I really regretting how we were drifting apart, but I guess it turned out that Junjun didn't lose to his dark side and kept on going. Him trying new things, making new friends... It was a real relief to see."

Seiya: "Woah, just what is going on with Jun? It's hard to follow with you suddenly talking all deep to me like..."

Mitsuki: "Well... I thought something might have been going on with him, but maybe it was nothing."

The heck does that mean? What's the deal with this guy?

Mitsuki: "Everyone has their own way of dealing with things. I just know that Junjun is sensitive and insecure so he keeps his distance from others. So if you're going to be close with him, then give him your support, alright? I'll also help him out if something happens~"

Seiya: "That's nice of you..."

Mitsuki: "Just keep an eye out, alright? Helping somebody out is different from making them dependent on you. So I hope he and you are able to smile genuinely."

His way of talking is so vague that I don't get the half of it, agh.

If I get closer to Jun, will this all make sense to me?

What is it really that he's trying to tell me here?

Jun's Perspective

_ _

Mitsuki: "You really did a lot of shopping, huh?'

A swimsuit, shoes, clothes, and other random stuff were stuffed in shopping bags hanging from my arms.

Seiya and Mikkun also seemed to have gotten a lot of shopping done.

Jun: "Well, I'm really happy with all I got. We've still got some time left, so what should we do next?"

Seiya: "Karaoke! Let's got to a karaoke place!"

Jun: "Of course that's what you pick!"

Seiya: "Ah, what's wrong with that~? You like karaoke anyway, yeah?"

Mitsuki: "And Junjun's a really good singer. Even if he only sings Ayu."

Jun: "Yeah, I only sing Ayu songs, heh..."

And with that we headed to a nearby karaoke store and reserved a room.

Mitsuki: "Ah, I'm so hot from all that walking... Turn on the AC~"

Saying that, Mikkun stripped off the T-shirt he was wearing.

Ooh, Mikkun had quite the tummy. Seems like it's gotten bigger since middle school. I wouldn't mind rubbing my hands all over it.

Seiya: "Hey hey hey, don't you just have a fine belly there?" *poke poke*

Mitsuki: "H-Huh?"

Seiya: "Dang that's soft. I wonder if here's just as soft!"

Mitsuki: "Hyaaah, stop that!"

Cue Seiya's signature grope attack (that he often used on my butt, smh). After he finished with Mikkun's belly, The Fox was getting all up in Bear's chest, squeezing it with abandon.

Seiya, you piece of garbage, how dare you?! I secretly wanted to do that!

Seiya: "Wow I think your tits are bigger than my ex-girlfriend's."

Mitsuki: "I'm not a girl, these aren't tits-... Oh... oh!"

What kind of a voice is that?

Jun: "...Seiya, are you gay?"

Seiya: "Wha? Nonononono."

I asked it casually like it was no big deal either way. But despite that...

Seiya: "No fucking way! I do not approve of that shit!"

Jun: "Oh... okay."

Seiya: "I mean, I don't hate gay people, but they weird me out when they're nearby so I ignore them. But whatever, Jun, put in a song! C'mon!"

Jun: "Oh right, heh..."

Without exposing myself as gay, there wasn't any sort of way I could try to change his mind. He probably just said that instinctively without really thinking on it...

But still...

I really didn't want to hear that.

Giving a sidelong glance to my two friends who have having fun taking selfies, I took hold of the DAM karaoke tablet. I started looking for songs, feeling muddy and gross.

Jun: *singing* "We were not born to live~ Just putting on a front~ And hiding a face~ Like the dead~"

...Will there ever be a place or time where I don't have to keep on burying away the 'me that no one else knows'?
