The Civilization Rating System [CRS] is a fairly simple way of determining a civilization's advancement compared to others. The three numbers (XYZ) are divided as follows: X is the civilization's ability to work with time; 1 is the lowest and 5 is the highest. 0 or no number here represents a civilization that has not yet discovered how to work with time yet. (Present Day Earth would be a 0 while the Time Lords from Doctor Who would be a 4). Y represents a civilization's overall advancement; this can be any number between 0 and 9. Uncivilized life would be considered a 0 while the most advanced civilization would be a 9. (Present day Earth would be around a 3-4, depending on region.) Finally, Z represents the Civilization's population size; this can be any number between 0 and 9. An extinct civilization would be a 0 while the most widespread and populous civilization would be a 9. (Earth would be considered a 2 on this scale.) The Paranelli are a 569 civilization; time masters. They are extremely populous; subspecies include humans and Time Lords. Very advanced, but still advancing. The Asgard on the other hand (Stargate Species) are a class 83 civilization.

Light² drives are WEIRD. To put simply, you literally travel at 89,875,517,873,681,760 m²/s. This is almost impossible to explain in 3-dimensional euclidean space. I'm Scottish, and even I don't know how to explain it.[4]

The Universe Identification Coefficient is a system of labeling to identify each universe. This is basically how it works: Every Universe Identification (UID) starts with the header 'U' to indicate we are talking about a universe. The first set of numbers (Typically ranging between 1 and 7865) identifies the region of the "Reality Hurricane" that the universe is located in. The second letter represents the universe's overall stability. From most stable to least, the ordering goes as follows: G-Q-V-D-R-S-K-I-L-U-T-B-Y-E-M-C-J-O-Z-W-X-N-F-P-H (This ordering is due to Universal Language [7] Lettering). Any universe with the sub-header 'A' is a fully time-locked universe (the most prominent one is the Base Universe but others exist). The final number is assigned chronologically based on when that universe was discovered in that region.

The phrase "I'm Scottish, and even I don't understand {blank}" (or similar variants thereof) is a cultural reference to the prominent Scottish know-it-all Archibald Haddock. He was one of the first people to try implanting the entire Paranelli database into his brain. He was quite a media sensation; giving advice on matters such as theoretical probabilities to marriage counselling. At one point, he dared anyone to ask him a question that he could not answer (the question had to be reasonable and not something like "Why is Black?"). No one was able to beat his challenge until a young man took up the challenge and asked him "Who in this universe wrote Beethoven's 5th?" (In this universe, Beethoven's 5th is a bootstrap paradox, so the question is unanswerable.) This lead to the ever-so-famous phrase: "I'm Scottish. And even I cannot tell you who wrote Beethoven's 5th." The super-basic definition of this phrase is basically: "I'm a know-it-all. and I cannot answer that question as it falls outside of the capabilities of my mind."

The Salmanine Protocols are basically guidelines of non-interference. They are similar to the Prime Directive from Star Trek.

Temporal anomalies are rated on a scale of intensity from 1-600. Classes 1-45 are typically self-correcting, 46-89 are serious anomalies that threaten the stability of that universe, and 90-99 are anomalies so severe that they fracture the timeline (those are nightmares to fix). The hundreds place of the number represents how many universes were affected. A class 001-099 anomaly represents a single universe anomaly, while a class 400-499 anomaly represents a major, wide spread anomaly affecting multiple universes. A class 500-599 anomaly is something that affects all of reality. A class 600 anomaly would basically be the death of all of reality.

The Universal Language is an extremely complicated language. While it allows for near-perfect translations between languages, it is nearly impossible to learn. In general, the Universal Language communicates the meaning of what you are saying without having any excess (It also allows for extreme text compression). Visually, it looks similar to Japanese, but it has similar grammatical structure and form to American Sign Language. Truly learning the Universal Language is almost impossible, but some have manged to do it. For the most part, you only need to learn the basics of the Universal Language, which are pretty simple. When translating between languages, the Universal Language makes sure that all the necessary information is communicated, letting computers fill in the rest of the necessary stuff for it to be easily read in that language. Ever since the implementation of ULMMT (Universal Language Middle Man Translation), translation errors have become unheard of.

Due to the fact that the Paranelli have been around for a long time and are Time Travelers, they had to create a completely separate measurement of years. Vetraheil has a virtually identical time measurement system to Earth (though some of the measurements are different). Days are 28 hours, weeks are 7 days, months are 32 days, years are 12 months or 384 days. There are 60 seconds in a minute; 60 minutes in an hour. The year is typically laid out something like this: XX-XXX-XXXX. The second set consists of 3 alphanumeric characters, which represent the year factor. The third set consists of 1-4 numbers that represent the current year of the factor. (The Year factor is exceptionally hard to understand due to the fact that it consists of a base-36 numeric set. In order to compensate for the fact that English uses base-10 numbering set, they use the letters of the alphabet to fill in for the other numbers). Before the Paranelli started travelling in time, they only used the aforementioned sets. However, things got complicated when time travelers started having mismatched timestreams. In order to compensate for this, the first set of characters was added. It consists of 1-6 alphanumeric characters, which are generated using a computer algorithm. The algorithm makes no sense to humans, but it allows the computer to calculate the time differential (It is sort of similar to the SHA-256 algorithm, but kinda in reverse). If the individual has not traveled in time or has not experienced any significant temporal event, then the value of the first set is given as a 1.

Omellius is Astrid's presumed secondary (A.K.A. middle) name. This is possible to change if her secondary name is revealed later on in the HTTYD series. Konrad's official secondary name is also a combination of her First and Secondary names.

The QFR (Quantum Fluidity rating) determines how easily an object can move between universes. An exceptionally high rating means that the object can move between universes without any side effects. A relatively low rating means that while the object can move between universes, there are serious side effects.A rating of 0 means that if the object leaves the universe, it will cease to exist (these are known as quantum locked objects. However, these are extremely rare). Normal matter has a decent QFR, but this can vary depending on different variables. A high QFR is a requirement to be admitted to the academy.

Menovett's Syndrome is a horrible disease that causes the body to break down. It's like a cross between Pollio and Cancer, except MUCH worse. Due to the nature of the disease, it is impossible to cure. Symptoms can be relieved, but there's not much you can do. Menovett's Syndrome can even start to break down artificial implants/body parts. However, there are only 5 known people in all of reality to have known cases of Menovett's. It occurs at random and is not contagious. The cause of Menovett's remains unknown. However, it has been theorized that it is caused by some sort of temporal/subspace clash on a major fixed point. But the strangest part about Menovett's: it is impossible to get sick in any other way. While your body can still break down, you are completely immune from all other diseases. Scientists have been studying this phenomena to try and improve the effectiveness of medications.

The Caretakers (Official sub-species designation: Menaloi Del Akoski) are subsets of a species that have exceptional characteristics. The most notable of which are their exceptionally enhanced mental capacity and the fact that they are exceptionally perceptive of other's emotions. A fair number of Caretakers become therapists (or similar occupation) due to this gift. However, there are significant drawbacks as well. The most notable of which are the fact that they require extremely specialized care when growing up to make sure that their minds develop properly and the fact that they don't make friends with others very well (the notable exception being other Caretakers). While these aren't as much of a problem when fully mature, they can still pose a barrier to some. The Caretakers are, for the most part, Dragons. However, they can also be humanoids (though this is less common) and other species (even more rare). The statistical chance of being a Caretaker when you are born varies widely, but it can be influenced be various factors.

ChromeLink is a way to store brain patterns/memories. Almost all time agents have memories of their true parents removed so that can't be manipulated. However, if a time agent discovers who his true parents are, they can request their ChromeLink file and restore those memories. The normal reasoning is that anyone can request any ChromeLink file, so long as they have the file number and the security key. The whole ChromeLink Archive is open, and in theory you could retrieve every single ChromeLink file so long as you had their security keys. Despite this fact, the ChromeLink Archive is one of the most secure places to store information.
