Sacrifice without Gain is pointless

It is sort-of the finale scene of a longer piece that i probably won't ever get around to writing

Constructive criticism is appreciated

As I closed the door it disappeared, phasing into the wall around it. I turned to face the room, fighting the thought that it was familiar despite the fact that I had never seen it before. I wasn't the first person here; four other otters were around the room. One stood leaning against the wall while the closest one to him looked like he was in the middle of pacing when I entered. Yet another was sprawled back in a chair, napping as if the world, well, worlds, weren't burning around us. The last sat in his chair backwards glaring at me. Their silver fur reflecting mine as the eyes that met mine looked dangerously similar while also disturbingly wrong. The one who was glaring at me shifted in his chair and grumbled in a deep voice, "Well, its about damn time. What the fuck took you so long?"

I grimaced, "We lost the battle and the town was destroyed. I had to dig through the rubble and the corpses to get here. Sorry."

His eyes softened, "Nah, don't worry to much about it. I'm just on edge because I don't want to be too late for my world"

The one who looked like he was napping spoke up, "I've told you, we're dealing with really weird time shit. I'm dealing with time shit? Who fucking knows. My point is that it's pretty much impossible to control our timing. That said, I would like to get this over with."

The others all moved to face each other and me. I would have sworn that I was staring into two mirrors except that we all stretched out our right hand to grasp onto the wrist of the person to our right, forming some form of odd-shaped pentagram. They were no prompts for what we were doing, we just moved in unison.

One of the others scanned the circle, "So, which of us is going to be in control. We are fusing together, right?"

Another rolled his eyes, "we're still the same person, so it will be al of us, and none of us. Our emotions, thoughts, and memories will be equally shared. I mean, you can feel that, right? The process has already started."

I spoke up before an argument broke out, which would have put a whole new meaning to the phrase 'arguing with myself'. "We aren't the hero of this story, right? The reason we were chosen was because we fell in love with the five people who are going to defeat the Nihil, and managed to heal them and help them grow strong again. Now to finish this we drag ourselves into a single being and by doing so force our timelines to weave themselves into one. Do any of us actually think we're going to survive?" I already knew the answer, but I just wanted someone to lie. To tell me that everything was going to be okay, that it was okay to hope. They all met my eyes, but none of them spoke. Each had been hoping for the same thing I was. My eyes burned and blurred as I thought of who I was leaving behind. I took a deep breath and sighed. "We don't do this for us, but for them, that they might survive and someday, somehow, learn to love again. Their hearts will break and that is our worst crime, but it's worth it."
