I really wanted to do more with this chapter, but I will do more next chapter. Including (if all goes as planned,) Vic's make-up session with her mate.

A Slice of Lex Ch. 4

By: Jenny Harlow

It was a relatively sunny day, Victoria's truck rolling down the highway, clear of most traffic at this time of the afternoon, so it was a nice smooth cruise. Lexi and Victoria were singing along with the stereo, Days Go By by Offspring was playing and the two were having a ball. It was over so quickly, they had just gotten off the highway when a large truck came across the intersection of the access road. It had run a red-light, slamming into the driver's side. Everything went into a sort of high-definition slow motion. Lexi was keenly aware of the shards of glass flying past her face from the shattered window, as the truck rolled sideways. The truck was flipped upside down where it skid across the road. Lexi was conscious but barely, only aware of a distant shouting. She looked at Victoria, whose blood was dripping down her side where a large gash had formed. Victoria's breathing was rough and gargled. She drew in one breath, and then let it out as a long bubbling sigh. "VICTORIA! WAKE UP!" Lexi cried, reaching over and shaking her partner. Her body was limp and dangled feebly from the ceiling.

The paramedics arrived on the scene, pulling the two gently from the car. Victoria was placed on a stretcher, and Lexi on another. The paramedics were swarming around them, she could see them desperately trying to revive the fox. Lexi fell into blackness, her face covered in tears. She woke up in the hospital, stitched up, plugged into more tubes than she ever thought possible, her mom and her brother there with Mat. She cried for Victoria, her mother and Daren in tears, they told her simply that Victoria was gone. Lexi was eventually taken to see her, her body laid out, cleaned of blood and the injuries stitched. Her body was cold already, Lexi held her, resting her head on the still fox's chest.

Her funeral came later. Victoria laid in the white coffin, wearing not a formal dress or suit. She was simply wearing her black paint stained work shirt, over her school t-shirt. Her black pants with a hole in the knee where she tore it on a wire fence, and her gray stained up sneakers. It was the outfit she loved most. Lexi sat next to Ryan, with her Mom and Daren on the other side. Ryan had his mother's head on his shoulder, attempting to look strong for her but it was clear he was on the edge of breaking himself. Lexi couldn't believe it, how could she live her life without the fox, without calling her on discord, without lunch at Jim's. She woke up crying, drenched in sweat, shaking uncontrollably. "VICTORIA!" She shouted at the top of her lungs, still not quite past the dream, "VICTORIA, PLEASE!"

Mrs. Adams rushed into her room, sitting on the bed. She put her hand on Lexi's head, "Oh, baby it's okay, it's okay!"

"Victoria... Where is she?"

"She got called to work for today, there was a flood at one of the venues last night and as a lead she had to be there. Oh baby you're still running a fever."

"I dreamed she died," Lexi sobbed, "I dreamed we were driving together, and we were hit. I saw her die and it felt so real. I saw her in the hospital, like my great gramma, stitched and cold."

Mrs. Adams teared up, pulling Lexi into a hug. Lexi sobbed uncontrollably onto her shoulder, and the older vixen rocked her gently back and forth. "Shh, it's okay baby, let it all out." Mrs. Adams knew her pain, even if it was only a dream, having very nearly lost Victoria's father in a car accident. She held Lexi up, talking softly. She never said the words 'calm down,' knowing this kind of sorrow had to run its course on its own.

Lexi finally leaned back on her own, looking the vixen in the eyes. "Thanks mom, I appreciate it." She gently laid back down, rolling onto her side. Mrs. Adams sat above her, tears of her own in her eyes. She rubbed the wolf's back carefully, making sure not to disturb her any as she dropped slowly back into sleep. When Victoria got home a few hours later, her mother stopped her for a second and told her what happened.

"Take her some lunch, sit with her, just generally love her. She needs you today more than I think she ever has."

Victoria fixed Lexi a bowl of soup, and herself a cold sandwich after working in the heat all morning dragging light equipment out of the theatre. She walked up the stairs, carrying the small tray. Lexi woke up at the gentle shaking over her shoulder. She turned over, and there like an angel in front of her was Victoria, wearing the outfit Lexi had just seen her wearing, laying in a casket. She hugged Victoria tightly, not saying anything, just holding her, feeling her warmth, hearing her heart beating and her steady breathing. All the while Victoria stroked the wolf's head. The fox kissed her partner on the top of the head. "I brought you lunch, I figured maybe you'd like to eat and watch a movie or something." Lexi smiled and nodded.

"I'd like that a lot, I'm so glad you're home."

Victoria kicked off her shoes, letting her black denim pants drop to the floor, the heavy tool belt making a small clatter as it fell to the floor. She took of her black Fun Republic tech shirt, and slid into the covers next to the wolf. She brought the tray over, and the two ate in companionable silence. Lexi sighed heavily. "What's the matter sweetheart?" The fox asked, laying her head on the wolf's shoulder.

"After dreaming I'd lost you I shouldn't be thinking this but, I'm sad that you and I can't fuck for a week." The wolf turned her eyes to the fox and they both laughed.

Victoria laid down next to the wolf, the dishes having been put aside, she let Lexi get on the outside of the bed as she remained towards the wall, wrapping her arms around her girlfriend protectively. "I stopped and checked on Christine today, since I didn't have a chance to drop by yesterday."

"How was Miss Mousie, is she doing alright?"

"A good bit better than you my dear," Vic said, propping her head up with her pillows, letting her see the TV over the wolf. "By the way, James says hi."

"James, what was James doing in Christine's apartment?"

Victoria held back the immediate response of Christine, "Not much, the two of them were just hanging out. Did you know our little squirrel had a crush on a certain mouse?"

Lexi paused for a second, James being a short and bespectacled dude with his short black hair, almost always unkempt, and a small piercing in one ear. She envisioned this paired with Christine and the overload of adorable was enough to nearly give her diabetes."Oh my god they'd be so cute together."

The two passed a little while talking about nothing really meaningful, just enjoying cuddling together, watching random movies. Even with a fever and a miserable, though less intense, pain in her side Lexi was enjoying the day, the dream of the previous night forgotten in the arms of her love. The rest of Sunday passed uneventfully. The two lovers mostly spending the day in Victoria's room, cuddled up together Lexi still running an off and on again fever, and falling asleep off and on. Monday came and Lexi awoke covered in sweat, her fever broken during the night. She awoke to the soft 'peep-peep-peep' of Victoria's alarm clock, as the fox rolled over, her red hair falling in many different directions. The vixen sat up her eyes half-lidded and her hair tousled. She reached for the clock, grumbling slightly. Without thinking about it, she started to get up from the bed out of impulse, knocking the barely awake wolf to the floor. Lex let out a girlish scream as she tumbled to the floor. Victoria jolted awake, "Oh my god, are you okay babe?" The fox said, lowering her muzzle down nearly on top of Lexi's head.

The wolf rolled over, grabbing her mate and pulling her down on top of her, Victoria also releasing a less than dignified scream as she was rolled off. Her muzzle now inches away from the wolf's "Oh I don't know Miss Foxy, maybe a kiss will make it better." She pulled Victoria gently in and the two locked into an embrace on the floor. Lexi moaned after they broke their lock. "Dang it! Now I'm turned on..." She moaned quietly.

"You're a big girl, you can take care of it yourself," Vic said, standing above her wolf, and striding away. "Besides, even if it wasn't medically ill advised, I have to get ready for class."

The wolf stood up, wincing for a second, the pain in her side diminished but still there. She sat back on the bed, "Alternatively I could join you in the shower, last time it wasn't a lot of fun."

Victoria grinned, stepping through the bathroom door motioning invitingly with her arm. Lexi walked into the bathroom, pushing open the door a little before walking in. Victoria was standing there, still topless, with her black panties still on. Together the two canines undressed, throwing their clothes into a small pile near the door. They slipped into the shower, and Victoria started the water. Lexi shuddered slightly feeling a little chilled in the water as it passed down her back. Victoria having taken the shower head, gently rubbing the shampoo into the fur on the wolf's back, kissing her neck gently as she worked her way up. She couldn't resist stopping and tickling the wolf's ticklish sides. The surprise of the action nearly caused the wolf to slip and fall, as she giggled. "Stop," She said giggling, "seriously stop devil-woman!"

Victoria stopped, instead she started running the water back down on to Lexi's back. The vixen passed the shampoo over her mate's shoulder. Lexi rubbed the soap across her, stopping just underneath her stomach. "Do you want to do the honors here." She said, turning her head to look Victoria in the eyes.

Victoria sighed, placing her head against the freshly rinsed back. She reached slowly around holding out her hand for the shampoo. She felt the cool spot in her hand. Lexi grinned, waiting. She frowned however when she turned around to see Victoria shampooing herself, her tongue stuck out at her partner. "Ahhh..." Lexi said, sitting down on the bottom of the tub.

"Infection remember, I've got cuts on my hand from yesterday." She sat in front of the wolf. "Besides, as I said before, I'm in a hurry and you can't be the only one who gets clean." They finished the shower, Victoria took her two towels and wrapped them around her body and her hair. "I'll make it up to you girlie, I promise." Victoria said, handing Lexi her robe.

The wolf sat dramatically on the toilet, letting out a loud snort. The vixen gently rubbed her back, kissing her on the head. She turned around and walked out the door to start getting dressed. Lex followed her, picking out some of her own clothes from the duffle bag that Victoria had brought the day before. She settled on a blue t-shirt with sleeves extending just off the shoulder, and a pair of blue jeans. She slid on a pair of white panties covered in pink flowers, followed by the rest of her clothes, except her bra. "I've got to call Mark." Lexi said, sitting on the side of the bed. "I'm still not really feeling up to going to class today."

Vic was hopping on one foot, her damp fur making it difficult to pull her sweats up. "I don't blame you, do you want to stay here for today."

"No offense, gal-o-mine, but I'd like to get back to my apartment today. Even if I'm missing class I still have homework to do."

"Fair enough, it's on my way to school, I'll drop you off."

The fox was finally dressed, she was wearing a black pair of sweats and a black t-shirt with a pocket on the chest, completing the look was the gray paint-stained sneakers that she wore perpetually. The two descended the stairs, Mrs. Adams met them on the way down. "I fixed you both egg and sausage biscuits to take with you!" She said.

"Thanks mom!" They both said in chorus. Victoria looking strangely between her mom and Lexi for a second. "Mom?" Victoria said, looking at Lexi.

"She invited me to." Lex said with a shrug.

"Oh okay then," Victoria said, shrugging herself before pausing again, "She didn't mention anything else, anything about me did she?" Victoria said, cocking her head sideways.

"No not really, other than that you were alright yesterday, that's about all I can recall."

"Ah, good!"

"What good?" Lexi said, the fox sashayed out the door in silence, a large secretive smile on her face, "Seriously, what are you asking?" The wolf looked to Victoria's mom, who also walked away, "Why does everyone keep walking away from me today!" She growled.

The conversation in the truck was very cheerful, Victoria constantly dodging any questions about her plans caused Lexi to finally give up asking. They went down the road singing along to the stereo. Lexi suddenly paused. They were driving down the highway, Days Go By, had just come on. She felt herself breathing heavily/ "Lex are you okay?" Victoria said, turning her shaded eyes towards her partner, "sweetheart?"

"Pull... Pull over..." Lexi said, panting desperately. "I just..."

Victoria, without asking pulled over, recognizing the signs of a panic attack coming on. She pulled the wolf into a tight hug, "What's the matter baby. Please talk to me..." She said, rocking the wolf gently, which had always helped in the past.

"It's just... This is like my dream yesterday... I thought about having to live without you. It hurts, really deeply." She said, tucking her face into Victoria.

"We can stay here until you're ready Jason will understand."

The wolf and the fox stayed on the side of the unusually quiet highway for a few more minutes. Lexi slowly catching her breath. Finally she sat up again, rubbing her eyes. "I think I'm ready to go now." The wolf said, sitting up tensely.

Victoria looked around, carefully, driving out into the lane once more. As they neared the exit, she heard the wolf inhale sharply. She gently reached over and took her mate's hand, gently rubbing Lexi's fingers with her thumb. Nothing happened, there was no truck at the top of the hill. Victoria again waited, the light changed twice before she drove forward. Finally reaching Lex's apartment, Victoria stopped, "Will you be okay?" She asked, rubbing her shoulder.

"Yeah, I'll be fine... " She said getting out of the truck. "I love you Vick." Lex said, closing the door.

Victoria rolled down the window. "I love you too, Lexi." She said before driving off. Lexi stood in the parking lot until the rumble of the truck's engine was out of earshot.

She walked slowly up onto her floor. She bumped into James on the way out, his hair was unkempt as always and he had a beaming smile on his face. "Hi Lex." He said, stretching. He realized the look of exhaustion on her face, she was still not feeling exactly well. "You okay?" He said, he started to put his hand on her shoulder then put it on his belt instead, rubbing his hair awkwardly.

"I'm fine, recovering from a kidney infection, how are you?" She said, propping herself against the wall. "Odd seeing here, you normally don't join our group."

James sighed heavily, propping himself against the wall as well. "I'm good, I actually came to see Christine, I was worried after I found out she'd been in the hospital. I didn't even really know she had epilepsy." The squirrel looked up making eye contact with the wolf, "and I'm sorry about not taking you up on your invites, it's just that I'm still kind of shy. You, Victoria, and Christine I know, but I don't really know anyone else in your circle."

Lex held her arms open, and the squirrel hugged her, "It's okay James, take things at your pace. I don't want to make you uncomfortable, but my friends won't care about anything other than the fact that you're James. You're the cute little squirrel dude who feeds us every few days, your past is yours to keep."

"Thanks," he said, letting her go. "I'll be back later, I'm actually going to grab Christine and I some breakfast. You hungry?"

"Nah I already ate, thanks though." Lexi said, walking into her apartment. After leaving Mark (her theatre advisor) a message on his voicemail, she flopped back onto her bed staring at the ceiling. Picking up her phone one last time, she invited her friends over later that night to hang out and relax after such a crappy weekend. The strong meds her doctor had given her still kept her knocked out most of the day, and Victoria's classes started earlier than hers. She stared at the ceiling before letting her eyes close. She dreamed about Victoria, this time better. It was at least this time a good dream. In fact, one might say it was very good for the frustrated wolf.
