#11 of A Forlorn Love

This is by no means a finished segment and is subject to change. After all this is just a preview. It has been a long time since i even worked on this story but I'm hoping to get the full chapter done and uploaded soon.

I guess Brittany was still curious as to what happened to my Dad because later that same day of the blood pact, she caught up with him and started asking questions about his leg and foot.

"Excuse me, Jason?"

"Hmm?"

"Would you mind if I asked you some questions?" Brittany asked, looking down at Dad's leg with quick glances. This was not lost on him.

"You want to know about my leg and foot, don't you, Las?"

"Yes, Sir. What happened to you?"

"How about we go somewhere more private? Like a nice meadow."

"That would be nice." Brittany said as she got into Dad's car.

They didn't drive very long before Dad found a meadow with several rolling hills for them to lay on and look up at the sky. Sitting up and looking Dad in the face, Brittany restated her question. Dad, laying on his back with paws behind his head, gladly answered.

"Well, as far as my foot goes, it was cut off by an assailant long ago. Like my hand, it is all metal but acts like a normal foot."

"An assailant?"

"Yeah!" Dad said, seeming to stare off into space. "Bastard killed my Foster Father. He was trying to kill me and Kodi but my Dad saved us. Killing the assassin before he died himself."

"I'm sorry to hear that." Brittany said, realizing that Dad and I shared something very personal.

"Thank you. You're a sweet girl." Dad said looking at her with a caring expression. "I can see why Jessy's so found of you."

"Thank you, Sir." Brittany said blushing.

"Now, to answer your question about my leg. It's actually not met. Well, it is but it's more like a piece of armor. I still have my real leg inside of it. At the moment it's more like a piece of training equipment, and I suppose a bit of a weapon. However there's more to it than that."

"Really?"

"Yeah but that's something I'd rather not reveal yet. I hope to never have to. There's only one other person that knows the real secret behind my leg and that's Kodi. He and you, although you only know part of the secret, are the only two that know about it."

"Not even Jessy or Alex?"

"No, not even them. I don't want them to know about it either. OK?"

"Ok. But why don't you want them to know?"

"Well, let's just say that there's some questions that are better left unanswered for the time being."

"Yeah....but.....Ok." Brittany said, looking away from Dad with a sad look.

Dad looked at her for a while before coming to a decision. He thought it might cheer her up some if she knew his reason for him not wanting us to know.

"Look, Brittany," He returned to staring off into space "it's not that I don't want them to know the secret. It's just that if they did know then they'd expect me to take care of all their battles for them. Jessy not so much but he'd still expect that. If they don't know then they have a reason to learn to fight for themselves. Do you understand?"

"Yeah, I guess so." She said a bit more cheery now.

"Good. Now I think that's enough questions for one day, it's getting pretty late and I'm sure Jessy will be worried about you."

"Ok! Let me help you up."

"Uh. No, no that's O...." He yelped in pain as Brittany pulled on his arm and tried to help him up.

"I'M SORRY! I didn't mean to hurt you."

"It's Ok, Las, really I'm fine." He said but his heavy panting told another tale.

"Jessy was right, wasn't he? He told me he thought he hurt you really bad but you just shrugged it off."

"It's just a scratch on my back, that's all."

"Jason, stop being like that, if you're hurt you need to let us know so we can help you!"

Dad thought about what the Golden Retriever before him had just said and decided to tell the truth to the young girl.

"Alright, Brittany. You're right, he did hurt me pretty bad. I just don't want him to worry about me. That's why I didn't tell him I'm hurt." Dad said as he indicated an injury on his back. A big black scab the size of his fist was on his shoulder blade. The sight of this made Brittany gasp really loud.

"Oh my! Jason, how could you keep this from us?"

"Like I said, I don't want to worry the boy. He's got enough to worry about without his Foster Father adding more to that list of worries." Jason said. "Besides, Kodi's been taking care of my medical attention."

"I'm sure he can do a fine job but I'm putting a bandage on you. I learned how to wrap them for Jessy when he was in the hospital."

"I don't want to be a bother."

"Nonsense. When we get back to the house I'll run inside real quick and get them. Don't worry I won't let Jessy know what I'm doing."

"Thank you, Las. You're to kind." With that being said, Jason took Brittany back to her house.

She ran inside quickly and went to the bathroom to grab the medical supplies that her parents kept in case of an emergency. I was watching TV with her mom and dad when she came running through the living room.

"Hi, Honey." Trevor said as he saw her rush passed.

"Hi, Daddy. Hi, Mom. Hi, Jessy." She said in a very rushed way.

"Brittany? What's wrong?" I asked concerned.

"Nothing. You just keep watching TV with my parents. OK?"

"Oh, um, OK. I guess."

"Mom, where did you put the gauze and medical bandages from when Jessy was in the hospital?"

"Don't you remember, Sweetie? You put them in yours and Jessy's room so you could take care of him better in there."

"Oh, yeah that's right I did. Thank you."

I watched as she went to their room, completely unconvinced now that everything was fine. When Brittany rushed passed them again and went outside, I got up quietly and went after her. After all I was concerned for her. What I witnessed her doing shocked me but it hurt my feelings more. Even in the dark I could tell that it was my Dad that she was outside with. That didn't bother me, I knew he wouldn't try anything with her. What upset me was the fact that I was right about him being hurt. I could see her bandaging him up. After she finished I heard my Dad thank her for the service and supplies before he got in his car and left. How he hadn't noticed me standing in the doorway is beyond me. I caught Brittany as she came back inside by surprise. She wasn't expecting to see me standing in the doorway.

"JESSY!? You scared me!"

"Why were you bandaging him up?"

She was silent and very reluctant to tell me the reason. She looked away from me and wouldn't look back.

"Brittany! Tell me why you was bandaging him up. He's the only person on this planet that I can call Dad. If he's hurt I think I deserve to know."

She looked back at me but was still reluctant to tell me what I wanted to know.

"I promised him I wouldn't tell you, Jessy. I'm sorry but I can't break my promise to your Dad."

I was starting to get really angry about this now. Why? Why didn't anyone want to tell me what I so desperately wanted to know? All I wanted to know was if one of the most important people in my family was going to be alright and no one would tell me SHIT! I was pissed and getting madder by the second! I furrowed my brow as I looked at her and said as calmly as I could that all I want to know is if he's hurt. Seeing how angry this ordeal had made me she finally broke down and told me.

"Yes! Yes he's hurt! When you threw him the other day you threw him on top of a large sharp rock! His back is very badly injured where he landed and the inside of his coat is caked with dried blood!" Brittany said as she started to cry. I felt bad for making her tell me.

"Sweetie, don't cry. I'm sorry if I upset you but don't you think that I deserved to know? Everyone else in my family did including you. I'm the only one who was left in the dark about it. Don't you think that's just a little unfair?"

"I guess you're right." She said, sniffing as she calmed down.

I leaned over and gave her a big kiss.

"Thank you for telling me, Baby. Now come on, let's go join your parents in the living room."

"Ok!" She said more cheery now.
