#2 of Rain and Snow

Tensions are rising and drama is high for Jessica in the second chapter of "Rain and Snow". Will she be able to make peace with her roommate. Or can new friend help ease her troubled mind?

I've been wondering if I've been getting into a funk lately. I really want more out of these chapters but then once their written they seem... shorter... than I expected. I just have to put more of myself, and more enthusiasm, into everything I do I suppose.

"I had no idea librarians could be so cranky." Jessica muttered as she scurried away from the campus library late one night after being strongly encouraged to leave. She wasn't alone, either, as a few others were making their way across campus back to their dorms. "Just trying to do research for a paper. Not my fault they close so early. And on a Friday, too."

"Well, it is ten at night." A young goat replied, following closely beside Jessica. "Honestly, I hadn't even realized it had gotten so late."

"I don't care how late it is, Francis, we have a paper to do." Jessica grumbled, still rather annoyed by the ordeal. "We have a research presentation to prepare for, on politics of all things. I hate politics."

"Certainly not my first choice of topics." The Toggenburg agreed, casually adjusting his hat. "Sure, it's important to know how our government works, but we have other classes for that. We should be able to do whatever topics we like for a public speaking class. I still don't understand why we couldn't do our report on the topic I suggested."

"As fun as it would be to do a presentation on My Little Pony, we are basically practicing for one day being on television. We have to report on topics where we'll be taken seriously. I just wish it was on something more interesting than politics."

"I suppose we could treat this as a challenge." Francis offered. "You and I, working together to create an astounding presentation on a topic neither of us really understand. A chance to prove the lengths we'll go through to present a well informed and knowledgeable report. And working together, I know we'll get an A for sure."

"That'd be nice." The young fox admitted. "I'd be happy with at least a B, but an A would be a nice boost, especially this early in the semester."

"Wouldn't hurt. Say, Jessica, would you like to come over to my place for a bit? The night is still young, and we could watch the latest episode together. I'd love to hear what you think of it."

"Well..." Jessica did take a moment to consider the offer, but she could feel the day starting to catch up with her. "Actually, not tonight. I think I just want to go back to my place and veg. Maybe curl up in bed with my laptop for a while."

"A rain check, then?" Francis insisted, flashing her a smile. "And I'll walk you home."

"You don't have to do that."

"I insist." Francis said, offering his arm for her. "What kind of friend would I be if I made a lady walk home alone at night?"

"The kind that doesn't want to walk halfway across campus for no reason?" Jess laughed. "But I won't stop you. The company would be nice."

"It would be my pleasure."

Though Jess didn't accept his arm, she did indeed appreciate his company on the walk back to her dorm. She wouldn't admit it aloud but it was nice to have some sense of security on the dark campus paths. Fortunately, it was a short, uneventful walk to MIlton Hall from the library. After once again declining to spend the evening with Francis, Jessica headed inside, eager to curl up in bed and hopefully get some peace and quiet.

The halls were surprisingly quiet for a Friday evening, which she took as a sign of good fortune. Perhaps everyone was finally getting tired of the almost daily partying. She was just wondering how to enjoy it when she got to her door and her heart sank. The door was closed and an ugly yellow scrunchie was wrapped around the doorknob; the agreed upon signal that someone was having sex in the room, and a sign that she wouldn't get to curl up with her laptop anytime soon.

"God dammit." Jessica sighed, leaning against the wall next to her door. She could just make out the moans coming through the door then, taunting and disturbing her at the same time. "At least I have my laptop with me. Not that it helps me if I'm stuck in the hallway."

She already had her phone in hand, debating who she could call to save her from this nightmare. "I already told Francis I didn't want to hang out. Plus I'm not sure I really wanna spend the night with him. I guess I could just call Chip. He'd only say no if he had a good reason, or is already passed out. Although..."

A smirk crossed her muzzle when she saw Jim's name on her contact list. "Well, they do stay up late. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to call, right?"

Roughly fifteen minutes later Jessica was once again outside, waiting in front of Jim's apartment building. It seemed like a nicer, quieter place to live compared to her dorm. And though she wasn't sure this place felt closer to the class halls. "I think next year I'll try to get a room here. Actually get some peace of mind."

The sound of an opening door snapped Jess from her thoughts. She smiled as the snow leopard came out to greet her, offering her an apologetic shrug. "Hi Jim. Sorry about this, but I wasn't sure who to call. Hope I won't be a bother."

"Nah, it's fine." Jim assured her, leading the vixen into the building. "The other's said it was cool. We're just chilling anyway. And if you have to spend the night I've got a spare bed."

"Thanks. I'll check to see if Cassie is done in a while, but knowing her..."

She let the thought trail off there, not wanting to elaborate as she followed Jim up the stairs to her dorm. "This place is pretty nice. Reminds me of one of those budget motels."

"It's not such a bad place." Jim agreed. "I mean, that heat's not great, and the laundry's all the way in the basement. But it's pretty chill and the RA's never check on us, so it works out. Here we are, home sweet home."

With a smile she opened the door, inviting Jessica into her humble apartment. Jess was admittedly surprised by how nice the place looked, especially for on campus housing. The main room was well furnished with a couple decent looking couches and a small dining table. Much homier than the small bedroom she had to share. The other two inhabitants certainly seemed to be comfortable at least.

"Make yourself at home." Jim offered, gesturing to the two girls on the couch. "Those two slugs are my roommates. If you're lucky, they'll actually get off their asses and say hi."

"Yeah, I'm coming." A short, curvy chinchilla hopped off the couch, a bright smile on her face. Though admittedly Jessica's eyes were first drawn to the girls' ample cleavage, her corset putting them on a fine and supportive display. "You must be Jessica. I'm Kari, and it's a pleasure to meet you."

"Nice to meet you, too." Jessica smiled, managing to remake eye contact. "I like your earrings. The ribbon is really pretty."

"Thank you." Kari beamed, giving said ears a twitch and causing the ribbon crossing her piercings to flutter. "Just in case it wasn't already obvious, I've got a thing for corsets. And that's Mako over there. Hey, Mako, come here and say hello."

"Yeah. Hi. Sorry, boss fight." They all glanced over at the shark woman still sitting on the couch, game controller firmly grasped in her hands. This one was even more heavily decorated than the others, with more facial piercings than Jess could count and plenty of artistic tattoos along her arms. She was also quite invested in whatever game she was playing, not even looking up to say hello.

"Oh don't mind her, she's been stuck on that same fight for about ten minutes now."

"This fight is fuckin' bullshit!"

"But she's excited to meet you, too." Kari assured her.

"It's fine. I don't want to get in anyone's way. It's enough that you're all letting me stay here for a couple hours."

"I told you it'd be fine." Jim said, momentarily distracted by her phone. "You can even spend the night. Not like anyone else is using that bed."

"Still no word?" The chinchilla asked. "You made it sound like she would be here hours ago."

"I thought she would be." Jim muttered. "I'm gonna call her and see what's up."

"Who're they calling?" Jess had to ask, a bit concerned as the snow leopard stepped aside. "Or should I not ask?"

"It's fine." Kari assured her. "Jim's girlfriend said something about visiting on the weekends, and yet she's not here. I think Jim's just annoyed at this point."

"Hey Mel." Jim said to her phone, doing her best to keep her voice calm. "I was wondering if I should be expecting you at all this weekend. Yeah, you said you were gonna visit on the weekends. Friday to Sunday. It was your idea, remember?"

Everyone was silent as Jim listened to her girlfriend's excuses, frowning all the while. "Well, it would've been nice if you had told me. Send a text saying hey, something came up and I can't make it. Just keep me informed every once in awhile... Well, it worked out anyway. Jess needed a place to stay tonight, and if you're not here we have a spare bed... Yes, the girl from the internet... No, if you have somewhere to be you shouldn't... What!?"

Suddenly shocked, Jim looked up to see Kari and Jess still standing nearby. With a soft blush she stormed off to her bedroom down the hall, quietly muttering into her phone.

"What was that about?"

"No idea."

"Maybe she wanted to sext." Mako suggested, sneaking up on the girls and making them jump. "That girl's impulsive as fuck."

"Welcome to the conversation." Kari teased. "Finally beat your boss?"

"Nah. That fight's a cheap bitch. So, you're Jessica? Name's Mako, nice to meet you. You spending the night?"

"Not if I can avoid it." Jessica admitted, checking her own phone. "Oh, wow. She actually got back to me for once. She's guaranteeing me that it'll be safe my midnight. So, I guess I just hang out here for an hour or so. At least I get to sleep in my own bed."

"Well a friend of Jim's is always welcome here." Kari said with a smile. "So long as you don't make a racket and never walk in front of the T.V."

"God dammit." They all looked up as Jim returned from her room. "Son of a bitch, I can't believe... I need a fuckin' beer. Who wants a beer?"

"You guys have beer?" Jess had to ask, ears perked up as the others raised their hands. "I didn't know you guys were twenty-one."

"We're not." Kari chuckled, as Jim went to retrieve the drinks. "Not for another year. Like being underaged ever stopped anyone from getting alcohol."

"Good point. Most of the freshmen in my dorm drink almost every night."

"We're not that crazy." Jim said as she handed a bottle to each of them. "We pretty much save the drinking for Friday nights. Celebrate the end of the week."

"Speaking of, what's Melody's deal?" Mako asked bluntly. "She bailing on her weekend visits already?"

"I guess?" The snow leopard shrugged, clearly unhappy by the turn of events. "Apparently she still wants to, but she's got a family thing tomorrow that she forgot about. Which I don't mind, I just wish she would'a told me."

"When did she become such a flake?" Kari asked with a shake of her head. "I don't remember her being like this last year."

"Oh that's not even the best part." Jim went on. "When she heard Jessica was here, she suddenly wanted to make the trip out here. And when I told her not to, she accused me of cheating on her."

"What!?" Came the collective response.

"Oh yeah. She half accusingly joke asks me if I'm sleeping with Jessica, from out of nowhere. Suggesting that I don't want her here cause I'm sleeping with someone else. Like I would. Uh, no offense."

"Oh, none taken." Jessica assured her. "I gotta know someone, in person at least, for much longer than a week before sleeping with them. Plus I don't support cheating."

"And I would never cheat on her, or anyone." Jim reiterated. "And she should know that. I never expected her to be the jealous one."

"She changed over the summer." Kari insisted. "I mean, she was kind of uptight before but that's just ridiculous."

"Well that's her problem." Mako said, raising her beer in a toast of sorts. "She wouldn't have to worry about it if she were here. Instead we'll just party without her."

"I'll drink to that." Jim sighed, the others all raising their beers in kind. "Here's to trusting each other."

"Here's to actually getting to sleep in my own bed." Jessica added with a smirk. With a laugh they all took a drink, putting their annoying life distractions aside to just enjoy the evening and each other's company.

A faint rumble echoed through the overcast sky, threatening to open up as Jim made her way across campus, looking for suitable shelter from the potential storm. Though she had a hooded sweatshirt, she really didn't want to get caught in a rainstorm, especially with one more class later in the day. "Just wait a few more hours, please. Why don't I own an umbrella?"

Taking the first option she could find, the snow leopard ducked into the student union, just as another rumble of thunder echoed through the sky. Jim gave one last scowl at the clouds above before heading in to find a place to wait it out. She knew there was a fairly nice sitting area where she could attempt to relax, and of course the small cafe nearby to cover any sudden caffein urges. Not as ideal as her room, but it would do until class.

Jim didn't even get the chance to find a seat before bumping into a familiar face; Jessica already there and making her way back out. "Oh, hey Jess. You avoiding the storm too?"

"Hi Jim!" Jess beamed. "I never avoid storms. Sadly, this one is mostly going to miss us. We may get a little rain but all the exciting stuff is going on further north. Maybe next time."

Jim stared at the fox for a moment, before letting out a chuckle. "I almost forgot that you're a weather nerd. Well as long as I don't get rained on. So, where you off to now?"

"Back to my dorm." Jessica replied. "My classes are done for the day. I had no mail, so it's time for homework and internet. How about you?"

"Just got out of a class, but I have another one in a couple of hours. Was gonna hide in here from the rain, but if you say it's not gonna happen I guess I'm free."

"You should be fine. After all, you've got a hood." With a grin Jess reached up to playfully pull the snow leopard's hood over her head, getting a chuckle out of the feline. "See? You're totally safe. Hey, if you're free, why don't you come back to my place for a bit? See how the other half lives."

"I spent a year in those dorms, y'know." Jim chuckled, pulling her hood back enough to see. "But sure, I can chill for a while. I can even put some fear into your roommate if you want."

"Might be harder than you think to scare the nympho out of her." Jessica smirked. "But I already had a talk with her after the other night. From now on if it gets to midnight I'm going in regardless. If she forgets, it's her problem."

The distant rumbling of thunder taunted them as the two made their way to Milton Hall. The rain held off long enough for them to get there dry, though it did little to improve the building's dreary atmosphere. "God, all these dorms are the same. They could at least brighten up the lighting."

"You have no idea how jealous I am of you." Jessica replied with a chuckle. "I mean, you have a nice living room, and a kitchen of sorts. And you only have to share a bathroom with two other people. I have to share it with the entire floor."

"Yeah, I remember how much that sucked. Nothing like a total lack of privacy when you're trying to take a... well, y'know."

"Make a deposit?" Jess replied with a smirk. "It's the worst, but when you gotta go, you gotta go. Ah, here we are, and no scrunchie on the door, so it's safe to go in. For once."

The young vixen reached for her keys, but a test of the knob revealed they weren't needed. So with a shrug and a smile she opened the door. "Home sweet ho- oh my god!"

Jim quickly moved up to see what had shocked her so, though she immediately regretted it. Cassie was inside, nude and bent over one of the beds, a young gecko previously pounding her from behind. Jessica's outburst had gotten him to stop, and upon seeing the unexpected audience he pulled out, trying and failing to cover up his erect member and leaving Cassie to fall to her knees.

"Cassie, what the fuck?" Jessica exclaimed, too angry at this point to be embarrassed by what she saw. "That's my fucking bed!"

"Is it?" Cassie offered an apologetic smile, shakily rising to her paws but not bothering to cover up. "Oops?"

"Oops!? Having sex in someone else's bed isn't an oops, Cassie!"

"Well, we started on my bed." Cassie tried to explain. "We just kind of worked our way over here. Besides we weren't having sex in your bed. I was just using it for support."

"More of you was on it than off!" Jess countered, still fuming. "Why can't you just use your own bed for support?"

"You two seem to have some stuff to work out." The gecko spoke up, clumsily slipping into his pants. "I'll just get out of your way."

"Wait, Steven! Call me later! God dammit I wasn't finished with him yet."

"Excuse me, but can we get back to the part where you were fucking in my bed?" Jessica growled, "Like, what the hell?"

"Well, how could you just bust in here like that?" Cassie countered. "You didn't even knock."

"Because you didn't put the scrunchie on the door. You didn't even lock it! Anyone could have walked in at any time!"

"Oh... Oops?"

"God dammit." Jessica could only sigh, the entire situation putting her in a foul mood. "It's just... that's my bed."

"Look, Jessie, I'm sorry." The calico offered. "It was wrong, but I swear it was an accident. It won't happen again, I promise."

"I just... I need some fresh air... I..." Unable to find her words, Jessica turned and stormed away. Jim, who had remained silent the whole time, could only chase after her friend, though she had no idea what to say about the unusual situation.

She found the vixen just outside the building, sitting on the steps as she wiped away a few tears. With a frown, Jim sat beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "So, that was pretty crazy, huh?"

"That was my bed." Jessica whimpered around a sniffle. "How can I sleep there, after seeing that? With her naked... nakedness, all on my sheets. I'll just see that anytime I try. How could she do that?"

Jim let out a sigh, wrapping her arm around Jessica, trying to show support as best she could. "I don't know, but you can stay with me if you need to. I do have a spare bed after all."

"Thanks, but I don't want to be a bother. I just wish I had some sense of privacy in my own room, my own bed. This is why I didn't bring any personal stuff to school. It'll just get defiled... like my poor bed."

Jim offered an understanding nod, rubbing Jessica's back as she thought of any way she might help. Only one idea came to mind, though it was a rather drastic one. "Well, y'know, maybe you could just move in with me."

"What?" Jessica sniffled again. "I can do that?"

"Sure, why not?" Jim shrugged, offering a smile. "We have the open bed. And they let you change majors and shit. Why not change your dorm? Come room with me, if you want to. I promise I won't have sex in your bed."

"Thanks." Jessica said, managing a smile. "But, what about your girlfriend?"

"Melody? I won't let her have sex in your bed either." Jim smirked. "It'll be fine. When she spends the night, if she spends the night, she'll be sleeping with me anyway. If she doesn't like it, too bad. She already passed on her chance to live there."

"You'd really give up having your own room for me?"

"Sure." Jim didn't even hesitate in her reply. "Might be nice to have a roommate again. And I can't think of anyone I'd rather choose. So long as you don't mind my staying up late."

"Better than a sex crazed nympho." Jessica chuckled. "Alright, if we can managed it, and the others are okay with it, then sure. I'd be happy to be your roommate."
