Being a mercenary for the side of good meant many things. The most obvious one is that I have a job to protect and serve the people, much like a police force, but without being as much enforcing of the law. Despite all this one thing is also for certain, innocent people get themselves caught square in the middle of problems sometimes. For that exact reason was why I was currently sitting in the middle of one of Corneria's sky deploy vehicles, which functioned much like a helicopter. I was accompanied by two other people, who would serve as my cover throughout the mission. The first was Wolfie Steel, who I'm certain was eager for a good mission. The other one was a Black Panther I wasn't familiar with.

"So what's your name?" I asked. He turned to face me, examining me minutely before replying.

"My name's Zach," he said.

"Nice to meet you Zach," I said, he didn't reply. General Pepper came out of his passenger seat he was buckled in, and spoke.

"Alright," he began, "you three have been assigned this mission because you are some of the best. The Monorail 2974 â€" 08A has been seized by an unknown terrorist group. The passengers on board are currently being held hostage for a huge ransom from the government. Your job is to take out the group effectively while making sure no harm comes to the civilians."

"What's the plan?" I asked. General Pepper pulled out a small device and pressed a button, revealing a hologram projection that simulated the train.

"The group herded the civilians to the back compartment of the train," Pepper explained, "The biggest mistake is that they sealed them there all by themselves. Each car is connected to each other through a plasmic link, and can only be separated by inputting the specific series of code. If you input one code incorrectly, the whole system resets. If you succeed, the car with the civilians will detach itself and allow us to conveniently retrieve it."

"What are our assignments?" Zach asked quickly.

"Ryan," Pepper began, "your job is to sneak your way to the back of the train and detach the car, I will relay the codes into your ear piece communicator. After you've detached the car and saved the civilians, your job will be to nuetralize the terrorists. Zach and Wolfie, your job is to provide Ryan with adequate cover using your sniping skills from above. If Ryan is seen while detaching the train car, you will to provide cover for him and the civilians, make sure none of them return to the car of the civilians."

"Yes sir," We all nodded and agreed.

"Very well," Pepper said, "We are just above and aligned with the train. Ryan, prepare for the drop." I nodded and got out of my seat, as the side hangar door opened to show the scenery. We were well into a small town a few cities away from Corneria. Besides the train itself, there was nothing much to see about the place at all. The morning weather was pouring rain from the near black darkened sky of clouds.

The train itself was still moving, as it did I could see my first destination of the mission. I was glad we were sneaking in from behind, although the unnecessary slipping possibilities I could do without. The pilot lowered us to the point where I could jump out without seriously hurting myself. I gained my composure and slowly made my way to the front of the back car, and jumped quickly onto the next cart. Trying my best to keep quiet. I looked back up at the skydrop, noticing both Wolfie and Zach were already on the watch with their sniper rifles.

I turned back my attention to a ladder leading down the side of the train, and quickly yet steadily climbed down. I opened a small hatch right in the corner, which opened up a small keypad. I interlinked with Pepper.

"General," I said, "I've made it to the device with no difficulty." I kept at least one hand firmly holding the ladder, because the train was still moving fast.

"Good," Pepper said, "I'm going to relay you the first code now, they're all 16 digits worth. Ready? 238091A0 BC00." I typed it in quickly and a single green light switched on.

"It worked," I said, "what's the next one?" I kept a hard grip as the train made a sudden quick turn. I turned and looked to see that I was just hanging over a cliff. One wrong move could easily spell the end for me. I interlinked into Pepper again.

"459235640000," Pepper projected. Another green light flashed as I typed it in.

"It worked," Pepper implanted the third one, which when I typed in signified another green light. "One more."

"8600640042002100," he said. It worked once more and I watched as the cart detached itself and slowly drift away from the train, slowing down slowly, and as I did, I could see a few of the scared faces looking out in my general direction from the window. I slowly climbed my way up into the train.

"Great job Ryan," Pepper said, "the innocents are being escorted out by another transport. Were sending in Zach to help you out with the second half of the mission."

"Very well," I confirmed and watched as the panther jumped out from his transport, landing expertly on his feet.

"Zach," I said, "you take the inside of the train, I'll make some noise on the rooftop and divert their forces."

"Understood," Zack said, pulling out a pair of swords, "it's game time." He quickly slid himself down the back of the car and into the back door, and all the while he I did, I carefully ran across the wet slippery rooftop. I didn't care for the fact that I was literally soaked to the bone under this weather, but I still had a job to do. I could hear the rumble going on below, it seems Zach was quick to make noise.

I quickly jumped over to the next car and made my way across it, jumping onto the next car. As I did I finally saw some of the enemy. A whole bunch of raggedy furs pulled out their plasma rifles and quickly shot at me. I pulled Bahamut out and ran towards them. I was able to deflect one or two of them, while dodging the rest. Most of them had gotten close enough to dry me off for a quick second from the heat intensity. I quickly slashed through their ranks and watched them fall quickly. As I stood up though, I could see that more were approaching, this time from both sides.

"Aerora," I shouted and sent a huge gust of wind to my behind, with a little boost from Bahamut. After that group quickly met their demise off the edge of the train, and I ran to the other group, repeating the same feat. As they fell I noticed we were entering a tunnel, and I took advantage of that.

"Firaga," I shouted, "casting the flames just barely over the top of the train, drying the tops of all the cars instantly. That's when I started running at full tilt, jumping over car after car while in the tunnel. I heard Pepper tune in.

"We've lost sighting Ryan," he said, "you and Zach are on your own until we get to the other side of the mountain to meet you." After Pepper tuned out, most likely from interference, I heard Zach tune in as well.

"Ryan," he began, "I'm right outside the entrance to the first class car. I think this is where the big boss is currently stationed."

"Wait for my command so we can bust in together," I said and tuned out. I continued my running and jumping pattern until I got to the front of the train. I made a quick peak and noticed the conductor and crew still at work. They were found to still have some use so I didn't bother. I jumped down from behind the front car so I was in between it and the car right behind it. I took a quick peek into the window and tuned into Zach.

"Zach," I said, "I'm ready when you are." I got my reply after a quick second.

"I'm ready," he replied.

"On the count of three," I said. We both counted down together.

"One, Two, Three," I busted my door open quickly, training both of my pistols in the area, and I saw Zach do the same from the opposite side. I was quick to see a tall wolf in the middle, his fur a bright white. He had a weapon of some kind pointed at me and I jumped to the side quickly as he fired, realizing it was a plasma pistol.

"I should have known that he would have sent you against me," the wolf said defiantly.

"The game's up," Zach said, "your men are through, you're the only one left." His swords were held up in a defensive position. The wolf turned and pointed the gun straight at him.

"Didn't your daddy ever tell you never bring a knife to a gun fight?" he said, cocking the safety off.

"Oh no you don't," I said charging him quickly. Before I could get to him in time, he quickly turned and fired his weapon in quick precision, but I was quick to dodge. Zach took advantage to swing the gun away from behind, and hold the wolf at the throat with his blades.

"I wouldn't move if I were you," he said. I rang into general Pepper.

"We got the small time," I said with a smile, "too easy."

"Now now Ryan," he began, "no need to get too cocky now. Just remember there were plenty of places there for you to slip. We're coming to pick you up right now."

"How are the civilians?" I asked.

"Safe and sound," Pepper replied, "all thanks to you. Keep up the great work Masterpaladin." I hung up and Bahamut tuned into my mind.

‘He's right about one thing Ryan,' he began, ‘you could just have easily have slipped somewhere.'

‘Maybe,' I replied, ‘can't I have my fun sometimes though? Being a mercenary isn't all fun and games.'

‘Well I guess that's true,' He said with a chuckle, ‘it's definitely not ALL about fun and games.' He started laughing and I got confused.

‘Hey wait a minute,' I said, ‘what the hell did you mean by that? That's not funny.' I looked to see Zack finish tying down the wolf terrorist leader and I turned to look out the window of the first class car. We had just left the tunnel and I could just see the transport that Pepper was on, waiting to pick us up.

Zach was a rather interesting character when I met him. He was quite the interesting character. He didn't seem to talk much but he very much had an outgoing characteristic about him. I first met him when I was asked to help cover a teacher in a swordsmanship class. Zach was easily the top of his class, and gave me a run for my money. He preferred using the dual wield tactic when I used one, and he used it well. I even had to sneak a second one to win back the advantage, because he was that good.

I didn't meet him again until after he had graduated not long after. I was taking a break with Falco after a tough training session, when we noticed him sweet-talking over a cute young lady. We smiled and decided it was best not to disturb his little private life, although we did acknowledge him about that later when he was alone, much to his discontent.

After that, the next time I had met him was the briefing for this latest mission. I was called into the briefing room, and had met Wolfie Steel in the middle of the hallway. When we got in he was already sitting inside, fully equipped and ready to go. He was very punctual, a quality I had to admit was very likable about him. We didn't say anything to each other during the briefing, nor during the trip.

Despite the few times we ran into each other and the couple of times we spent together, I didn't seem to think we considered each other close friends, and as far as I'm concerned, I don't think he thinks that way either. As far as I know, we're just a couple of mission buddies every now and then. Of course, that doesn't mean that can't change if we don't meet up every now and then more often.

After a rather smooth ride home from the mission, the weather had cleared up. Pepper had dismissed us after a small speech about how much of a wonderful job we all did, and hope to see us to such a similar job in the future. Zach left the briefing room before us, and Wolfie and I left together, deciding to catch up a little.

"Up for some lunch Ryan?" he asked.

"Sure sounds fun," I replied, "I even know a good diner." We nodded and headed to the lobby. As we got there though, we noticed a particular panther we knew as Zach chatting up a cute pantheress. We chuckled to each other and decided to leave him be, quietly walking out of the building.
