Chapter 5

Benjamin Brownfoot heard the angry snarls of the tusked beasts as he staggered through the thick undergrowth, trying desperately to carry his son to safety. His eldest son Jarred had been badly wounded by a beast's tusks, and Benjamin struggled to keep hold of him as the boy's pelt became more soaked with blood. Higher up on the ridge, Benjamin could hear the snorts of the feral beasts. They were stalking the badgers, and they were closing.

The badger's hunt had gone terribly wrong, and now Benjamin and his eldest were fleeing for their lives. They could not evade their pursuers, the beasts were relentless. Benjamin picked up the thirteen year old, and put him over his shoulder. Jarred winced in pain, but held fast to his father's neck. To their left they heard the sounds of branches being snapped by large forms moving through the underbrush, and upon the ridge small stones cascaded down. Creatures quickly made their way down the sloped ridge, and other beasts made their way up from the meadow. The badgers were being cut off.

"Take cover behind that large tree," Benjamin said pointing ahead of them.

They gripped their spears as they watched the underbrush, the tree was massive enough to provide them some cover and prevent them from being ambushed. The forest grew quiet as the two caught sight of the beasts' eyes glinting at them from the dim light. From the shadows of the underbrush a large male slinked it's way out, pawing the ground, and snorting loudly. Benjamin whispered to his son, "When he charges, stay behind the tree. I'm going to use the tuskin's weight to impale it on my spear."

They tensed, and just as the beast hurled itself at the two badgers, it was intercepted by a flash of gray. The charging tuskin was thrown back against a tree with a sickening, wet thud. Another tuskin charged from the underbrush and it's roar turned into a screech as the giant harpy eagle leapt into the air at the last second and landed on it's back. The thick grey arms of the eagle closed around the beast's neck, and there was a wet crunch as the tuskin's head was twisted around at an odd angle. Quickly, two more beasts were upon the eagle, but the harpy performed an aerobatic flip, and slashed the beasts with his talons. As they recoiled in pain and confusion, the harpy issued a ferocious scream. The cry echoed through the forest and when it died down, the thunderous retreat of the rest of the tuskin pack could be heard disappearing into the distance.

"Hector!" Benjamin called, but as he looked to the harpy, he saw that it was not Hector Ironwing that had saved them. This harpy eagle had a womanly curve to her hips, and a regal femininity in her face. "Greetings," the harpy said, bowing. "I am Victoria Steelspere. Tell me, how do you know Hector Ironwing?"

At the Brownfoot home, Benjamin's wife Catherine swept their front porch with a large straw broom, and watched her daughter Elizabeth play with her cousins. Her adopted son Timothy Buttons used a wooden rake to gather fallen leaves for kindling. Timothy was a tall fox reynard who's parents had died in a small plane crash some fifteen years ago. Catherine had instantly taken to the boy when she worked at a boarding school. Something deep inside her wished to care for the fox, even before Catherine had bore children of her own. And Timmy had grown into a fine young man who was a valued help around their woodland home. Just then she saw a large eagle coming over the treetops. It seemed to be carrying two bundles, and as the avian drew near, Catherine could see that the eagle carried her husband and son.

Catherine ran toward the group as the eagle touched down, and cried out when she saw her son's blood soaked pelt. "Oh, Hector, thank you!!" Catherine cried as the eagle unfastened the leather straps that held the two badgers to her breast. Victoria smiled as Catherine looked at her again, and realized that it was not Hector who carried her loved ones. "This is Victoria," Benjamin said, introducing the eagle, "She is kin to our friend Hector." Timothy looked in awe at Victoria. He felt a flutter in his chest, and felt strongly drawn to the harpy eagle. Victoria felt his gaze, and nodded to him. He shyly bowed, and Catherine patted the eagle on her arm, "Bless you miss," The mother badger said, "Thank you for helping my family."

Victoria bowed again as she watched the badgers take their son into her Aunt's former home. She had been a young chick when last she saw this home, and it was certainly not what she had remembered. Her cousin Hector had not yet hatched, and there was much strife in the Ironwing home. Victoria's mother Ursula Steelspere had parted company with her sister Isadora Ironwing because of her abusive ways. Victoria's mother had shielded her daughter from the dark influence of her troubled aunt. Forbidding any contact with the Ironwing clan.

But in recent times, Victoria had longed to know her cousins, for good or for worse. And she stole herself to hope that her cousins had indeed become good people, despite the abuses of her aunt and uncle. The badgers certainly held her cousin Hector in high regard. Timothy drew near to Victoria, and lightly touched her arm, "Thank you for helping my family." He said, and Victoria smiled to him. Noting that he did not release her arm.

Benjamin appeared in the doorway, and beckoned Victoria to come in. The harpy eagle made her way inside, and her eyes adjusted to the dim coolness of the Brownfoot home. Jarred's parents nervously tended to his wounds, and Benjamin related the story of Victoria saving the badgers from almost certain death. Catherine looked to the harpy eagle, and she flung her arms around the eagle's waist.

"Oh, thank you love! Thank you so much!" Victoria held Catherine, and patted her gently as the mother badger began to weep. "I don't know what I would have done..." Just then there were frightened cries from outside. The Brownfoot children ran into the house, and Timothy followed the young ones inside, and bolted the door. "Wild beasts! Surrounding the house!" he cried.

Catherine cried out in fear as she gathered all of her children together. Victoria stood sternly, a fearsome look in her eyes. "They must have tracked you back here Benjamin..." Victoria said cooly. Angry grunts came from outside, and tusked heads began to ram against the walls of the cabin. The children screamed in terror, and Victoria leapt up to the rafters above.

Being a former avian's home, there was a doorway above that opened to the outside. Victoria unbarred the door, and stepped out to the balcony above. About thirty wild beasts swirled angrily around the cabin, they looked up to the harpy eagle, and shrieked with menace. "Victoria!" Benjamin called, "Please, what are you going to do??" Victoria stuck her head back into the doorway, "I'm going to stock your meat stores for the rest of the year." Victoria said with a smile, and then went to do battle.

From the outside terrible screams began to ring through the cabin's walls as the vicious battle ensued. Fearsome shrieks of beasts rang out, and then were cut short. Outside on the porch a struggle began, fearsome thrashing and pounding rocked the cabin. Benjamin ran to a window and looked out. He could see Victoria locked in mortal combat with a thousand pound tuskin bull. Her clawed hand held it's throat as the creature struggled to gore her with it's tusks, or trample her with it's hooved feet.

But the mighty valkyrie held the creature fast. She tried valiantly to rip into the creature's throat, but his thick pelt confounded her. The bull managed to knock the harpy to her knees, but Victoria lashed out with her taloned feet. Her massive hooked talons bit into the creature's belly, and began to rip it asunder. It's entrails emerged in a cascade of blood and gore, and the tuskin screamed loudly in agony. Victoria clasped her hands into the creature's gaping maw, and with fearsome strength she ripped the huge beast's jaw from it's skull. The creature thrashed about uncontrollably, and Victoria leapt free of it's hooves.

She took wing, and landed in the midst of the remaining creatures. Quickly, she grasped a nearby tuskin and held it aloft, crushing it's spinal column with her massive arms. Screaming with terrible fury, she flung the creature's body against a tree. The surviving beasts regarded the ten foot tall eagle with fear, and turned to flee. Their desire for revenge given way to panic, but Victoria again took wing, and slammed down hard upon the backs of the retreating beasts. There would be no escape. They would not threaten the Brownfoot home again.

Benjamin turned to the front door as the mortally wounded bull slammed against it, cracking the wood of the frame. He grabbed his spear as the beast again slammed itself against the heavy door. Quickly he moved beside the door, and unlatched it. It shuddered as the beast threw itself against it again, forcing it's bloody head inside. With a roar, Benjamin brought the point of his spear down against the creature's head. His eyes went wide as the metal tipped weapon hit bone and didn't penetrate!

He drew back as the beast twisted against the weapon, shaking and trying to snap the shaft. Benjamin yanked back, pulling the spear's blade through the creature's mangled face, causing a gurgle of pain from the beast. In it's blind rage, it roared again. Sending a spray of blood and gore out before it, and Benjamin lunged with the spear, shoving it through the creature's throat, severing the spinal cord. The creature slumped against the door frame, filling the doorway with it's bulk.

Victoria emerged from the woods, and took the large bull's carcass from the porch, and drove the spear all the way through the creature to make sure it was dead. She then sat down heavily on the porch. The fox Timothy carefully approached the blood soaked eagle. As he drew near to Victoria, he gently put his hands on her shoulders. "Thank you..." he whispered. Victoria patted the fox's hand, and smiled to Benjamin, "I hope you have not lost your taste for beast flesh."

That evening the Brownfoot family sat around their campfire, cooking large slabs of meat, and baking corn cobs. Victoria noticed that Timothy seemed to scoot closer to her as the evening progressed, and smiling, she finally took the fox into her arms and held him to her breast. Timmy beamed as the huge eagle wrapped her arms around him. Benjamin smiled, and handed some morsels to Elizabeth. "Tell me," Victoria began, "How did you discover this home? And how did you come to know my cousin?"

"We inherited this lodge from a group of avians some ten years ago." Benjamin said, patting his son Jarred. "We never knew Hector's family. We never even knew of Hector until some four months ago when we had his surprise visit. Hector arrived, saying that this had been his boyhood home." Victoria nodded, then asked "Did he say anything of his family?"

Benjamin shook his head, "No, he never actually mentioned them. He said only that his family had lived here some twenty years ago, but had departed. To where, I do not know."

Victoria nodded, "Do you know where Hector now resides?" Benjamin again shook his head, "No. But when he came to us, Hector traveled with a bald eagle, and an equine brother and sister. They were headed to the avian temple." Of course, Victoria thought. The Temple. "Thank you." Victoria said thoughtfully.

Again, Benjamin was puzzled by the deep emotional tone the eagles took when talking about this home, and the eagle family that had once lived here. He looked to Victoria, "Please, I would like to know. Did something happen here?" Victoria's expression was far away, "I honestly do not know. But I did know Hector's father, and to have him abandon this home is very unusual."

Benjamin looked concerned, "Do you think he will return and want it back?" Victoria shook her head, "I do not believe that he is now amongst the living. Nay, he shall never return. Tell me, have you met Hector's brother? My cousin Saldek Ironwing?" Benjamin shook his head no. Victoria again looked thoughtful, and held Timmy closer to her breast. Jarred cast Timmy an envious smile, and the fox buried his face in Victoria's feathered arms.

"I think," Benjamin said slowly, "That I should take my family to the city. I cannot... bear the thought of them coming to harm." Victoria nodded, "The city is not without it's dangers." She cautioned. "What you have here is special, perhaps wait and see what tidings the future brings." Benjamin nodded, and Elizabeth climbed into her father's lap. He cradled his daughter, resting his chin on her head. He was badly shaken by the events of today, and he would not soon forget them. Nor would he ever forget the heroism of his new eagle friend.

Slowly, the family made their way indoors. They felt uneasy about sleeping outdoors, and they bid the eagle and fox goodnight. Soon the budding young couple were left alone. Victoria slid her hands down his bare chest, and the fox let out a pleasured gasp. "Tell me," Victoria asked, "How many summers have you seen?" Timmy blinked for a minute, and then said "Ah, I am twenty one years old." Victoria nuzzled him, "Ah, and I am twenty three." she said.

Timothy ran his hand down Victoria's massive arm, "You have fantastic strength for an older woman." he said playfully as he brushed his tail against her flanks. Victoria cooed, and released Timmy from her embrace. She laid down on her side, and parted her legs invitingly. Timmy looked down at the great eagle, and took in her majesty. Victoria ran her fingers along the fox's flank, and her claw caught upon his shorts. "These seem to be in our way." She said, smiling. "Lady Victoria..." Timmy said, stammering. "Please call me Vicky." She said. And the fox looked down at his feet, seeming very nervous. "Oh..." Vicky said, sitting up and hugging the fox. "Perhaps some time later, when we know one another better." Timmy smiled, "I would like to know you better."

The two held one another again, and then slowly made their way back to the cabin. Catherine smiled when the two entered, and were holding hands. The mother badger felt very safe having the eagle staying with them tonight. She wished the eagle could stay forever. But as she saw the pair sit very close together, she wondered if that might indeed come to pass.

Far across the valley of the Sanvean, Eleanor Silverstone lay next to her husband Paul. Her pregnancy was progressing beautifully, and soon she would pass her new child's egg. The newly christened Silverstone home was settling down for the evening, and Shelton passed by Eleanor's chamber and bid his adopted parents goodnight. "See you tomorrow!" Paul said warmly. Shelton waved, and met Ashley in the hall. He patted his brother, and kissed him on his beak, "Goodnight birdie." Shelton said.

Ashley hugged Shelton, and then shyly peeked his head into his mother's doorway. Eleanor smiled to him, and held out her hand. He eagerly went to her, and smiled brightly as his mother patted him. Paul reached out and brushed his feathered head. "Goodnight sweetheart." Paul said affectionately, and Ashley felt a great swell of love. Paul had stepped in and filled completely the role of his late father. It was as if his life had been completely restored.

Ashley beamed, and bid his parents goodnight. His life had indeed become whole again, save for one sadness. He wished his brother Justin could be here. Justin would like Paul, Ashley thought. He was sure of it.

Shelly Proudfoot tried to get comfortable as she lay on her side. Her husband Virgil slept next to her, his gentle breathing was beautiful to her ears. But her belly had grown large with her child. The hybrid baby of the eagle Virgil, and the mare Shelly was going to be a very large child indeed. Shelly's back ached, and her stomach churned uncomfortably. Shelly tried to calm her mind, and she also thought of Justin. Her mind went to her dream of Justin at the pool, his golden eagle form turning into the future image of her son to be.

Shelly carefully reflected upon the dream, she had gotten the sense that some of Justin's memory had come back from across the veil. That part of Justin's being had crossed into her new son. It was all so fantastic, she could scarcely believe it. She began to settle into a gentle slumber, and her mind went to a familiar place. She was in her father's front yard, at his old home in Lost Hills, south of the city of Albany. Shelly's mother Missy, and her father Gabriel were gardening in the front yard. Shelly sat and watched the two, these were the happiest times for the couple. Shelly watched her parents, and her father would look to her now and again and make baby talk.

Shelly remembered that she was very young at this time of her life, though to herself she appeared in her adult form. Shelly looked, and found that her son Shean sat near her. He was wearing the form his body would take in his early twenties. Although he was totally nude, and Shelly shyly averted her eyes.

He would stand taller than his father, who was already over nine feet tall. His thick powerful legs had hooved feet, and his forearms had avian scales, which ended in clawed hands. His bright avian eyes bore a deep blue color. And his massive wings caught the gentle breeze of his mother's dream. "These are my grandparents?" Shean asked, and Shelly nodded. "Yes sweetheart, they are. I'm sorry you can never meet them." Shean looked to them, and smiled. "Perhaps I shall." he said.

Shelly looked to him, her face a question. "Well," Shean said, "The souls of grandmother and grandfather are now in new people. Just as Justin's soul has become my new self."

Shelly nodded, "I see what you are saying, but would it still be my mom and dad?"

Shean shook his head, "No mom. But you could know that they were your parents. You have actually met your father's new self. On your last trip into the forest." Shelly's ears flashed up, "What??" she cried.

"Yes mom," Shean said, and he gestured to the image of her father. Gabriel's equine self began to shimmer, and slowly he took on the form of a young fox. The young man did look familiar to Shelly, and Shean smiled, "He is now the adopted son of the Brownfoots. His name is Timothy."

Shelly smiled, she did feel that she somehow knew him. "Who is mother now?" Shelly asked.

And the image of her mother Missy also began to shimmer, and she grew large. She began to take on the form of an avian eagle. Great wings sprouted from her back, and her face became the visage of a harpy eagle. Shelly's mouth fell open, "She's an eagle now?"

Shean nodded, "Yes mom, her name is Victoria Steelspere. She is seeking out her lost kin, Hector Ironwing." Shelly again looked incredulous, "My former mother is now an eagle, and Hector is her brother?" the mare asked, her face awash with emotion.

"No momma, Hector is her cousin." Shean said, "She has met grandfather, and they are falling in love. All over again." Shelly put her hand to her chest, "Awww! That's so sweet! So she is with the Brownfoots?" Shean nodded, "Yes momma. She is a very nice lady, and grandfather's new self is also a very nice man."

Shelly patted her son. The image of the harpy and the fox began to shift back into the image of her equine mother and father. Shelly smiled, and held her son close. Her face was against his chest, and she looked up to his chin. "You are really going to be a big man." Shelly said proudly. Shean looked into his mother's eyes, and for a moment, they became the golden eyes of Justin.

"I love you Shelly..." Shean said, but the voice which came from her son was that of Justin. Shelly threw her arms around him, and hugged him tightly, "Oh, Justin! I love you so much!" she said, as tears welled up in her eyes. She was beginning to awaken, and her dream self began to flicker away. As she faded into wakefulness, the image of Shean became as mist, and enveloped Shelly. Slowly moving into her womb, and filling her once again.

As Shelly and her new son at last faded from the dream, Gabriel and Missy Holden looked to one another, and gently pressed their lips together in a loving kiss. Until, somewhere between immensity and eternity, the two equines also faded into the dream of the creator.

***

Shelly woke, and looked to the wall clock. It was just before five in the morning. The sun was only just beginning to stir, and Shelly gently tried to get out of bed without waking Virgil. But he stirred, "Shelly?" he peeped, sleepily. "Please, help me to Hector's room." Virgil sat up somewhat alarmed. "Hector's room?" He asked, as he took his wife's arm in his hands. "I need to tell him something. I don't think he knows he has siblings." Virgil looked terribly confused. "Shelly...?" Shelly patted his flanks, "Trust me baby."

Hector lay in a deep slumber, but slowly, he heard a soothing voice. He roused from his sleep, and he became aware of Shelly next to him, trying to wake him. "Hector..." the mare said, patting his arm. "Shelly..." Hector said, "What is wrong?" Shelly leaned in close to the harpy, and whispered "I had a dream, and in it I found out that you have a cousin. Her name is Victoria, and she is looking for you." Hector sat up, suddenly alarmed. "Shelly, I don't have any kin..." "That you know of." Shelly finished. "Trust me sweetheart. I have seen her in my dream. She is a towering, and beautiful woman. As big and as strong as you. But she is brave, and caring, and thoughtful. Just like you. She will love to meet you. And she is with the Brownfoot family right now!"

Hector sat stunned. "Shelly, surely it was just a dream." The harpy said softly. Shelton sat up, and took his husband's arm. Shelly put her hand on the eagle's chest, "Trust me." She said. And Hector believed in her. "Thank you Shelly, I will depart at once!" Turning to Shelton he foozled his mane, "Rise my pony! Gather your warm clothing and eyewear! We leave for the forest at once!" Shelly clapped her hands together excitedly, and Virgil gently placed his hand on her shoulder. He was deeply concerned. He was afraid that his new wife might be having emotional stress due to her unusual pregnancy. He closed his eyes, and sighed. But Hector patted his friend, "Fear not my brother!" Hector said, "I shall go to Benjamin's home, and meet my lost cousin!"

The household was now fully awake as Hector's excitement rose with each passing moment. Virgil was terribly worried. Turning to Ashley and Jonathan Virgil whispered "Please look after Shelly. I must accompany Hector to the Brownfoots, because I fear he will be terribly devastated when he finds that there is no lost relative to meet him." The boys nodded, and hugged Virgil. Patting them, the bald eagle gathered his utility belt and put some snacks inside for the trip.

Deep in the forest of the Sanvean, Victoria awoke to the playful pouncing of Elizabeth and her sister Melissa. Vicky held Timothy close, and gleefully laughed as the young badgers climbed atop her, and buried their faces in her wings. Catherine smiled, and went to her son's bunk to check his bandages. Jarred did not look well. He was feverish, and his eyes were dilated open. Catherine gasped, and called out to her husband, "Benjamin! Come quickly!"

The entire family rushed to Jarred's bedside. Vicky looked carefully at the young badger's wounds, "He's becoming infected. We must get him to a doctor with all haste!" Catherine looked helplessly around, "There are none within two hundred miles! Save for those within the avian temple!"

Victoria scooped up the stricken badger, and held him to her chest. "Benjamin, wrap a blanket about him, and then use the leather strap to fasten him to me. I will take him to the temple with all speed! He will be well cared for, I promise!" Benjamin secured his son to Victoria, and the eagle made her way outside, and prepared to depart. Timothy held her arm, and Victoria turned, and looked deeply into his eyes. She leaned down and touched her beak to his furred cheek. And then the eagle leapt into the air, and sped north, toward the temple.

***

Virgil and Hector had found a pleasant tail wind, and their flight was progressing nicely. The four hundred mile journey would take less than eight hours, and both eagles kept their energy level high. Virgil looked across to his brother, and Hector still wore an excited, and expectant expression. He noted that Shelton looked concerned, obviously worried that Hector would likely be terribly disappointed.

The river tiber moved beneath them, and it wouldn't be long before they would arrive at the Brownfoot's home. And then they would see if their hopes would be dashed.

Across the sky, Victoria pushed herself hard to reach the temple. The same wind that helped Virgil and Hector was hindering Victoria. She had difficulty maintaining a consistent speed, and she had to labor hard in the strong wind. But Jarred moaned weakly in her arms, and Victoria's resolve was restored. She surged foreword, pushing with all of her strength to reach the temple by nightfall.

Back at the Silverstone home, Eleanor was seated in her gallery, reading a newspaper. Paul was writing a letter to Gloria, and Gracie, and Ashley and Jonathan were upstairs tutoring themselves with their career studies.

Just then, Eleanor felt a flutter in her belly. Then a contraction, "Paul..." Eleanor gasped. Paul's feathers stood on end, and he rushed to his wife's side. "Paul..." she gasped again, as she spread her legs, and began to pant heavily. Paul quickly grabbed a blanket, and placed it at her vent. Slowly, she dilated open, and the egg began to pass. Eleanor cried out, and her son's peeked out over the railing above. They watched their father take their new brother, or sister's egg into his arms, and he quickly placed it on the cushion that had been prepared.

The brothers leapt over the railing, and went to their mother's side. Paul had a great expression of pride on his face. He gazed at the egg, and marveled that he was a father now. Truly a father. He rose, and went to his family.

The eagles held one another for a long moment. All gazing over to the egg that would soon hatch.

***

Over the tiber river, Hector saw the fork in the river, and he made a long banking turn. Shelton clung to his husband's arms as the eagle began to make his descent. Virgil followed close behind, trying to compose his thoughts carefully. Trying to think of the best words he could to ease the disappointment that was sure to come.

Hector landed in the clearing not far from the Brownfoot home, and released his husband. Shelton stretched, and patted Hector's belly. Virgil landed near them, and nodded to Shelton. Hector saw the home in the distance, and quickly made his way through the grass. His pace quickening with each step. As he drew near, he saw the Brownfoot clan busying themselves with chores. All seemed present, and there was no sign of a female harpy eagle.

Virgil's face became grim, and Hector let a soft croak escape his throat as he leapt into the air, and flew the remaining distance to the home. Catherine saw Hector and his family draw near, and she waved warmly. Hector touched down, and looked about for his lost cousin. Benjamin waved, "Hector! Good day! What news?" Hector's crest flattened, and his wings slumped. Virgil and Shelton drew near, and gently hugged the harpy. Elizabeth ran up to the eagle, and held her arms out expectantly. Hector smiled, and scooped the girl up into his arms.

"The other eagle is just as big as you!" Elizabeth said gleefully. Hector's eyes went wide, and Virgil's mouth fell open. Shelton smiled, "Other eagle?" Catherine drew near, "We have been visited by a lost relative of yours Hector. Her name is Victoria." The harpy let out a long breath. "Where is she?" Hector asked, shaking. "My son was injured, she has taken him to the avian temple." Catherine said.

Hector closed his eyes, and then he let out a great cry. Elizabeth squealed in delight as Hector danced about, whooping and chittering. Cradling the little badger girl in his arms as he celebrated. Shelton wore a wide grin, and Virgil's gaze was happy, but also thoughtful, and far away. Timothy came to Hector's side, and suddenly hugged him. Perhaps pretending that Hector was the other grey eagle of his desires. Elizabeth climbed down into the fox's arms. "Victoria is a great woman." Timothy said at last. And Hector smiled broadly to him. Happy to know that his kin would be nothing like the Ironwing clan.

Virgil shook hands with Benjamin, "Your son was injured?" "Aye," Benjamin said, "On a hunting expedition. Very aggressive tuskin beasts. They nearly killed us, were it not for the bravery of your cousin." Hector smiled.

"Indeed," Benjamin continued, "I have never seen greater strength, nor finer fighting skill from anyone. She is truly an awesome hunter."

Hector smiled, "It runs in the family." The group slowly made their way toward the home, as Benjamin related the events of the previous day. The sun dipped low in the sky, and far away, Victoria drew near to the temple. She could see the lights of the temple beacon in the distance, and there were other avians in the air around her, also making their way toward the main gate.

Victoria sighted the temple main entrance and spread her wings wide to trim her air speed. Touching down within the main hall, she cried out "I have an injured person! Can anyone help me! He needs a doctor right away!" At once Victoria was surrounded by avians offering assistance. They took Jarred, and whisked him to the medical dormitory. A peregrine nurse took Victoria's hand, and quickly led her inside. "My name is Rhia, please tell me what happened..." The nurse asked urgently.

Soon, Victoria watched as a nimble magpie surgeon operated on Jarred. They suspected that there was a foreign object inside the badger, and sure enough, the magpie withdrew a small piece of broken tusk from the badger's flank. Nurse Rhia entered the waiting room, and comforted Victoria. "He will be fine. The infection is contained, and we expect a full recovery. Your friend will need to remain hospitalized for several days." Vicky nodded, and thanked the falcon.

Victoria left the medical dormitory, and asked a passing eagle "Where might I find a records keeper?" The eagle directed Victoria to the lower level vaults, where the harpy found a large white kingfisher. He sat behind an oak desk, softly dozing in the soft candle light. When Victoria tapped her claws upon the oaken desk, the kingfisher stirred, and composed himself. "Greetings Miss!" Adrian the Kingfisher said. "How may I help you?" Victoria smiled, and bowed.

"I seek my long lost cousins. Harpy Eagles named Hector, and Saldek Ironwing."

"Ah!" Adrian said, "I know of Hector! He is a good lad!" Victoria beamed, then her cousin had indeed escaped the taint of the Ironwings! "What of Saldek, his brother? Do you know of him?" Adrian frowned, "I am sorry Miss, I have him listed as deceased. Along with the parents Constantine, and Isadora Ironwing." Victoria nodded, at least she knew. She was sorry that her guess had been correct. That her aunt and uncle were no longer living. But it was especially sad that her cousin Saldek was also passed on.

"Please..." Victoria said, "Have you a listed residence for Hector Ironwing?" Adrian smiled, and wrote the Silverstone address upon a scrap of paper. 612 Ayrie street, West Sanvean County, City of Albany. Victoria bowed again to Adrian and departed. She now had the residence of her lost cousin! And since it would be several days before Jarred was well enough to travel, Victoria had time enough to venture to Albany and visit her cousin!

At the Brownfoot home, Catherine fed her visitors a fine soup, and strips of fresh tuskin beast flesh. "You know..." Benjamin said, "Victoria has only just departed this morning. I think that if you leave in the morning, you can meet her there at the temple." Virgil nodded, "Indeed, I am sure that we will have no trouble locating her by checking in with the medical staff. I'm sure there are very few wounded badgers there." Benjamin chuckled, "Aye."

Hector was bubbling over, he wanted to leave this instant. But he was tired, and it was good to see the Brownfoots again. The family brought the eagles up on all of their adventures, and their misgivings about living in the wilds. Elizabeth made her way over to Shelton, and plopped into his lap. The pony laughed, and figured he had best get used to the attention. "It is good to see you again my friends..." Benjamin said warmly. Catherine nodded, "Indeed, we wish we were back in the city. I feel my children are missing out on a whole world of friends, and activity. They are lonely, and they need the company and fellowship of others."

"Couldn't you move back into the city? Albany is very nice." Virgil suggested. Catherine shook her head, "We have no money, we could scarcely afford temporary lodging, let alone a home for all of our children." The two eagles cast a glance at one another, and then leaned in close, quietly taking council together. "I have two hundred thousand union pounds, you?" Hector said quietly. "Seven hundred and seventy thousand..." Virgil replied. "More than enough." Hector said, smiling. Shelton listened to the two eagles quietly plotting, and a huge grin crossed his face.

The two eagles then turned back to the Brownfoots, "You will have a home in Albany. Large enough for all of your family, and even a few visiting eagles." Catherine gasped, and put her arms around Benjamin. The two had learned a few things about the eagles. You don't argue with eagles once their minds are made up.

***

In the main gallery of the avian temple, Victoria composed a letter to her parents, detailing what she had found, and where she would be going....

Dear Mother and Father,

These past few days have seen the most surprising discoveries. I have found Aunt Isadora's former home, and it is now occupied by a nice family of badgers. I am sorry to inform you, that your sister and nephew Saldek are no longer alive. I do not know the circumstances of their passing, but whatever tragedy befell them, it seems my cousin Hector was spared. Indeed, cousin Hector seems to have escaped the pall of the Ironwing family, and he has accomplished much.

Everyone I have come to know holds Hector in the highest regard. He seems to have become the man we would have hoped he could be, and I am very excited to meet him, and get to know him better. Once we are reunited, if he is willing, I will bring him home for you to meet. Please prepare the downstairs sleeping quarters!

I have business here at the avian temple before I can depart for home, but I expect to return home with Hector before the month is concluded. Here is the address which I will be staying, 612 Ayrie street, West Sanvean County, City of Albany. You have my warmest love, and I will see you again soon!

-Victoria

The eagle folded the letter into an envelope, and addressed it home. Slipping it into a post box, Victoria returned to the medical dormitory and went to Jarred's side. The badger brightened at seeing her, and weakly held out his hand to her. Victoria took his hand, and held it to her cheek.

"Jarred, will you be okay here if I were to voyage to my cousin's home?" The badger slowly nodded, but his eyes wished that she would stay with him. Victoria lowered her head to his chest, and the young badger ran his fingers through her feathers. "It will only be for a few days, and then I will take you home to your family." Jarred knew this was important to her, and he weakly patted the eagle's head. "Okay, I understand. I will see you when you return." Victoria purred, and patted the badger.

She settled down next to him, and closed her eyes to rest. Suddenly a huge growl came from her belly. Jarred's eyes went wide, "Was that you?" Victoria chuckled, "Yes, I am afraid so." Jarred patted her shoulder, "You had best get something to eat. As quickly as you can." The eagle laughed again, and took her leave. "I will check on you again before I depart!"

The cool evening air drifted in through the windows, and Eleanor adjusted the blanket over her egg. Shelly came near, and hugged her mother. The two stood together, looking at the beautiful egg. "I know it's going to be a girl." Eleanor said. Shelly nodded, and nuzzled the eagle's chest. Eleanor put her hand to Shelly's belly, "How long now? Three more months?" Shelly smiled, "Just about." The two held one another, and dreamed of times to come. Soon they retired to their rooms, and the home settled down for the evening.

The next morning, Victoria awoke laying on the floor next to Jarred's bed. She had no idea what time it was, and fretted that she might have overslept. She rose, and looked to see that Jarred was okay. His color was good, and his breathing was steady. Satisfied that he was well, Victoria made her way to the main hall to prepare for her flight. As she made her way to the dining hall for a quick morsel, a tall elder bald eagle touched her arm. "Miss Victoria Steelspere?" Victoria was surprised, "Yes?" The elder eagle bowed, "Forgive me, but my name is Joshua Morningside. My colleague Adrian Ores informed me that a tall, attractive female harpy eagle had inquired about my adopted son Hector, and I sought to meet you." Victoria smiled, "You are Hector's adopted father?" Joshua bowed, "I took care of Hector for most of his young life. He met my son in a rather spectacular fashion, and I was compelled to take the young man into my care. But it was my pleasure to do so."

Victoria nodded, "Tell me, what happened to Hector's mother and father?" Joshua's face became grave, "You are Hector's cousin, I am afraid there was a tragedy that befell your aunt and uncle." Victoria nodded, "I understand, what was it? An accident?"

Joshua shook his head, "I am sorry Victoria, but it was a far more tragic loss than you can imagine. One that nearly cost young Hector his sanity." Victoria cupped her hand over her beak. And Joshua nodded sadly. "It was murder. Your aunt and uncle were killed by your cousin Saldek. And then the young man took his own life." Victoria gasped, and lowered herself to her knees. Joshua sat and comforted the young harpy. "I am so sorry. It was my hope to find you, and inform you of this sadness, so that Hector would not be required to speak of it."

Victoria hugged the bald eagle, and buried her face under his arm. She let out a shuddering sigh, and the father bald eagle gently patted the young harpy. "This is a tragedy, to be certain. But know that your cousin was saved from this sadness. My son gave his love selflessly to your kin. He loved your cousin more than I myself could ever have. And he helped heal Hector's being. When you meet Virgil, know that it was he who healed your cousin. Just as it was Saldek that delivered Hector from the tyranny of his parents."

Victoria looked into the eyes of Joshua, and the eagle patriarch cradled her face in his hands. "Go now to Hector, take all of my love with you. Follow the Adeline farmlands to the western edge of the Sanvean valley. There you will find the city of Albany. The Silverstone home lies on the northern edge, against the rugged hills bordering the Sanvean forest."

Victoria nodded, and thanked the eagle. He patted her shoulder, and then smiled. "I will look after your young charge, and see that he is not left feeling lonely." Victoria beamed, and cried "Thank you sir!" After her small meal, Victoria departed for the city of Albany.

Far to the south, Hector and Virgil were making their way north toward the temple. The fierce southerly wind still blew, and made their progress slow. But hector was energized, he could not wait to meet his cousin. Virgil could scarcely believe Shelly's prophesy. How could she have known? Unless her contact with the spirit world had made her a clairvoyant. This was obviously the case, and it made the eagle wonder what else she knew. He was deeply curious now.

In the Silverstone home, Shelly lay on her bed. Ashley and Jonathan peeked inside, and asked if she was okay. "I'm fine! Come on in guys." The brothers made their way inside, and sat next to the mare. "How do you feel Shelly?" Ashley asked, gently putting his hand on Shelly's enormous belly. "Well," Shelly said, "Have your brother climb into your belly, and then you will know."

Jonathan giggled, and Ashley's beak opened with surprise. "It's really that uncomfortable?"

Shelly nodded, "I certainly wish I was an eagle mother, Eleanor seemed to have a much easier time." The boys nodded, and lay down on the bed with Shelly. Keeping her company. Shelly had a burning sense that she would soon receive a visit from her former mother. She couldn't wait.

***

Victoria flew long over the valley of the Sanvean, she thought of what the bald eagle had told her. She couldn't imagine Hector witnessing the killing of his parents. However terrible those people were. They were still his mother, and father. Victoria thought of her own mother, and father. Ursula, and Ulysses Steelspere were ever loving, and supportive parents. She wished that it could have been different for Hector, but it seemed that his new life had become enriched with the company of fine avains. She was happy that she would now meet her cousin renewed, and restored.

Victoria flew on, following the track of farmland below, looking off to the distant western hills. There she would find her cousin. She could hardly wait!

As evening came, Virgil and Hector drew near to the temple. Shelton was asleep in Hector's arms, and Hector hugged the pony tightly to wake him. "Wake up love, we are nearly there!" Shelton patted his husband's arms, "I love you Hector! This will be wonderful for you!" Virgil smiled as he thought of the happy reunion. Hector had always wished for blood kin that he could grow with. He had always felt like an outsider, and now he would have this lost connection to his family. One that was apparently positive, and worthy of kinship.

The eagles touched down into the large temple archway, and Hector quickly released Shelton's harness.

"Victoria will likely be in the visitor's quarters of the medical dorm!" Hector said excitedly. He rushed to the large dorm room, and asked a nurse where he could find a wounded badger, and his eagle caretaker. The nurse directed the eagles to the quiet corner. There, Hector found his adopted father Joshua Morningside. He was reading to Jarred Brownfoot, and the badger waved to Hector and Shelton. "Father!" Hector called. Virgil drew near, and grinned wide. "Where is Victoria?" Hector asked, looking nervously about. "I'm sorry lad, she has gone to your home in Albany, hoping to meet with you." Hector crumpled to the wooden floor. He was utterly spent, and barely had the energy to remain awake, let alone chase his lost cousin across the valley once again.

Shelton patted Hector, and Virgil asked "When did she depart? It would have to have been this morning?" Joshua nodded, "Aye, yes. She did leave this morn. But she shall return in two days time. To take Jarred back to his family. Remain here Hector, and you shall see your sibling soon."

The eagles retired to the dining hall, and sought out the table where Eleanor had met Paul. They smiled to one another as they remembered the amusing scene of their mother retiring with her man for the evening. The man who would become her husband.

Shelton pressed his face under Hector's arm, and nickered playfully. Hoping to cheer Hector's disappointment away. The eagle smiled, and nuzzled his husband. The party was soon joined by Joshua and Priscilla Morningside. And the group had a nice meal together. Shelton placed some scraps into a sack to smuggle in to Jarred. He knew the badger would be famished after being subjected to hospital food.

Victoria drew near to the city of Albany, the sun was sinking behind the hills, and it was becoming difficult to discern details on the ground below. She saw the hills bordering the forest, and decide to follow the ridge. Hoping to catch sight of a clue. The topography was quite unlike her small eastern town, and Victoria decided to touch down.

A small canine jogger saw the eagle apparently wandering lost, and he asked the tall woman if she needed directions. "Yes, please." Victoria answered, grateful for any assistance. The small canine looked at Victoria's scrap of paper, bearing the address she sought. "Ah, 612 Ayrie street, that's just a few blocks over. Farther up toward the ring of the hills."

The canine gestured over Victoria's right shoulder, and she hugged the small man, very grateful for the help. The great harpy eagle alighted, and flew toward the ridge. The canine stood for a long moment. A broad smile on his face as he replayed the eagle's wonderful embrace in his mind.

"Okay, that's a few blocks..." Victoria said to herself. She touched down, and looked to a street sign. The brass placard read "Ayrie," and Victoria hooted with excitement. But which way? She looked up one side, and down the other, but saw no numbers indicating direction. She remembered Joshua said it was high on the hill, so she proceeded up the grade. Looking for number 612.

Shelly carefully made her way downstairs, and from the gallery, Ashley saw her slowly making her way down. The young eagle launched himself into the air, and came down at the base of the stairs. Rushing to Shelly, he took her hand. "Thank you sweetie..." Shelly said, kissing his beak. Ashley beamed, and patted his sister's arm.

Just then the doorbell rang as Shelly reached the bottom of the stair. Almost directly in front of the door. Ashley went to answer, and as he opened the door, Shelly saw a towering grey form filling the doorway. "Hello..." the ten foot tall harpy eagle said, "My name is Victoria."

"Come in!" Shelly called. Victoria smiled to Ashley as she made her way inside. "I am sorry," Shelly said, "But Hector has gone to the avian temple, searching for you." Victoria looked surprised, "Oh? Did Mister Morningside contact you?" Shelly smiled, and evaded the question. "Please, you must be very tired, sit down!" Shelly said, gesturing to the sofa. Victoria smiled, and eased herself down onto a cushion. Eleanor leapt down into the gallery, and Paul made his way in from the kitchen. "Greetings!" Eleanor said warmly, "I am Eleanor Bri... ah, Silverstone!" Paul smiled to his wife, and she covered her beak with her wing. "I am Hector's new mother in law," Eleanor continued, "It is very nice to meet you Miss Victoria!" Vicky bowed to the lady, and Shelly eased down onto the sofa next to the harpy.

Shelly looked longingly at the great eagle, as the mare remembered her dream. Shelly wished she could hug the eagle, but in that moment Victoria leaned close, and put her face against Shelly's breast. "It is very good to meet you." Vicky said, but suddenly looked embarrassed. She did not know what moved her to display so much affection toward the equine mare, but she supposed it was the excitement of the moment. But Shelly slid her arms around the harpy's neck, and Victoria felt very warm inside. Eleanor smiled, and Paul took his wife into his arms.

The group settled down, and started to get to know one another. Victoria cradled Shelly in her arms, and they talked of life, and loss, and of finding happiness anew. All present had lost someone, but had found so much more. Shelly was happy to meet the new incarnation of her mother. She was indeed a wonderful person. And the mare felt so lucky to have her secret knowledge of the young harpy's past life.

Gloria and Grace Blackmore sat in their student quarters of the avian temple, reviewing their day's lectures. There was a tap on the door, and Gracie thought it might be her sea eagle friend Kristen, come to study with her. She opened the door, and there were the faces of her brothers in law. "Hello!" Shelton nickered, and the girls let out a surprised gasp. "What brings you here?" Gloria cawed, "You wish to venture to where fun goes to die?" The eagles laughed, and told the girls of Hector's lost cousin, and of their recent voyages. Gloria patted Virgil's arm, "You are more than welcome to take the large folding bed here, our Uncle Paul used to sleep here."

The party settled down for the evening, and Hector sat on the edge of the bed. His large dark eyes were downcast, the eagle was very frustrated by the situation. Shelton hugged his husband, and Hector patted his pony. "Thank you, Shelton. Thank you for everything you do." The stallion kissed his eagle's bare belly, and Hector cooed. Virgil sat down, and scooted up against Hector, "Got any room for a lonely eagle?" Virgil asked, his feathers rousing. Hector smiled broadly, and took Virgil into his arms. "Certainly!"

The three settled down together, and Virgil nestled against Hector's broad back. He put his face into the back of the harpy's crest, and breathed deeply of his friend's scent. Hector smiled, and hugged Shelton snugly against his chest.

Fatigue stilled any arousal, and the three settled into a restful slumber. Far away in the city of Albany, Victoria was shown the room where Shelton and Hector would sleep when they were in residence in the Silverstone home. "Thank you..." Victoria said, placing her large hand on Shelly's shoulder. And the mare patted her gently. "Goodnight." Shelly said.

Victoria settled down on the large bed, and closed her eyes. Instantly falling to sleep. Eleanor sat in the darken gallery, looking upon her egg. Paul came to her, and draped her with his wings. Eleanor looked up to Paul's sailor portrait hanging nearby. "You are so handsome as a sailor my love." Eleanor said, looking to her husband. Paul knelt beside her, and gently whispered "I have sat beside many harbors, and the sea yet calls to me. But you, you are an ocean wave my love, crashing upon my bow." Eleanor gasped, utterly moved by his poetry. Paul smiled, and hugged her tightly, whispering again, "And every time I hold you, I sail away." Eleanor sighed, and whispered to him, "My love, please... I need you. Will you take me again as you did on our first night?" And Paul eased down between Eleanor's thighs, passion burning in his eyes. Eleanor spread her legs wide, a powerful want simmering in her own golden eyes.

Upstairs, Victoria Steelspere rode the ebbs, and currents of her deep slumber. A dream came upon her, and in it she tended a humble garden. Playing near her was a young child. She thought her child was an avian eagle, but when she looked, she saw that no... it was an equine infant. Her own hands bore not her large talons, but small hooved fingernails. And there was a man with her, Victoria thought that he was the fox Timothy... but no. Suddenly it was not. It was a large grey equine stallion that tended the garden with her. Victoria smiled to the stallion, and he looked into her eyes, and gently kissed her lips.

In Hector's bedchamber, Victoria smiled sweetly. Throughout the night she had gentle scenes come to her mind. Some sweet, some tragic, but always she was left with a loving feeling. She felt her love for the fox Timothy grow more and more. And in her slumber, she would speak his name, and cradle her pillow, as if her love were there with her. And far across the valley, in the deep wood of the Sanvean, Timothy Buttons dreamt of a great grey eagle. He too smiled sweetly, as he dreamed of running his hands through Victoria's feathers, and exploring every part of his new love.

Shelly also settled into her own deep dream. She was in a lovely garden, and a gentle breeze made the canopy of trees gently sway. She saw that her son Shean was with her, this time appearing as a seven year old. Shelly was amazed at his size, even at this tender age. "Shean," Shelly asked after a time. "I have seen who my former parents have become. But can you tell me, I wish to know who I once was. Who Shelton once was. Can you show me this?" Shean smiled, "Yes momma." The boy replied. And the image of the green garden became suddenly dark. All around the mare the trees were dying, and the sky became dark, and choked with a terrible fume. "Shean!" Shelly cried, and she tried to cover her face with her night gown.

An image of Shelton appeared, but then changed. He was still a small grey Haflinger horse, but his eyes seemed very weak. He was staggering through the withered countryside, straining to find his way. Squinting through his poor eyesight, using an ax handle to catch himself when he would stumble.

"Who is this person?" Shelly cried. "His name is Sampson." Shean said, "Shelton's spirit has a very long history of being a great comfort to those around him." Shean said with pride. Shelly watched the scene of Shelton's ancient

self make his way to a small home, and take refuge inside. Bringing needed food to the children there.

Then the scene changed, and the trees were restored. They grew tall, and all was shaded once again by the great green canopy. It was familiar to Shelly, and in the distance, the mare saw an image of herself. And the mirror image of Shelly began to change, to become someone else. Shelly covered her face in astonishment as her mirrored self began to grow tall. Wings came from her back, broad and grey. Her gentle face became dark, and stern. "What?" Shelly gasped, shaking her head in disbelief. "This is who you were in your most recent life momma..." Shean said. "No!" Shelly cried, and she quickly began to wake from her dream. She could take no more of the troubling image, and wrenched herself from the vision that Shean's spirit was revealing to her.

She lay in her bed, shaking. She clutched her belly, and attempted to catch her breath. There could be no denying what she had seen. But she also remembered what Shean had said before. That who we were is not who we later become. Shelly counted the years of her age, twenty one, back to the year that Hector said his family had been killed by his brother. That was twenty one years ago. Shelly covered her mouth. When she next conferred with Shean, she would have many more questions.

***

The next morning rose over the avian temple, and the girls made their way out of the room, trying not to wake their guests. As they latched the door behind them, Virgil slowly woke. He looked to his friend, and smiled at the adorable sight of Shelton laying upon Hector's chest. The stallion rising and falling with his husband's breath. Virgil rose gently, and began to compose a note. Smiling, he tacked it to the inside of the door, and quietly departed. Hours later, Hector woke with a start. "Mmmmph..." Shelton sputtered, as he woke too. Hector looked about, there was a note tacked to the door, and Hector rose to read it...

Hector,

I am returning Jarred to the Brownfoots, take Shelton and return home to Eleanor's. Enjoy meeting your cousin! I will see you back there soon.

  • V

The harpy tapped his claw against the note, and smiled. "Shelton, we are heading back home. Let's get some breakfast!" Suddenly Hector's belly growled very loudly, and Shelton laughed. "Yes I think we better..." The stallion joked. Later, as Shelton was finishing his meal, Hector excused himself. "I need to visit a friend, I will see you back here in a moment!" the harpy said, kissing his pony. Hector made his way to the records office. There, he found the hawk Clemens, and the kingfisher Adrian napping. Tapping his claws upon the desk, the two clerks woke with a start. "Hector!" Clemens exclaimed, "How are you!" The harpy hugged his old friend, "I wanted to thank you two for helping my cousin to find me." Hector said, gratefully. "Ah!" Adrian said, "How is she?" Hector smiled, "I have yet to see her, but she is now at my adopted family's home. I travel back there now!" "Then make haste," Clemens said, "And write us a letter and tell us all about her!" Hector hugged the two, and then made his way back to the dining hall to collect Shelton.

Back in the Silverstone home, Victoria made her way down the stairwell. Jonathan meekly bowed to the imposing lady, and Vicky smiled warmly to him. From the kitchen sounds of frantic activity could be heard, and Jonathan led Vicky into the dining room. "Ah! Hello!" Eleanor cawed, "How was your night?" Victoria bowed, "Very restful lady Eleanor." The harpy greeted Shelly, and sat down at the table. "I had many curious dreams," Vicky began. "Oh?" Shelly asked. Victoria smiled, "Well, I dreamt that I was a horse, and that I had a stallion husband." Shelly smiled, and patted her hand. Eleanor looked curious, but Paul suddenly asked her to remove a pot from the stove, and her attention was drawn back to her cooking.

"Hector will be back tonight." Shelly said, sipping a cup of water. "Have you heard news of him?" Vicky asked. "You could say that, yes." Shelly said. Soon everyone was settling down for their meal, and Shelly beamed as she enjoyed the company of Victoria. Her own troubling dream now forgotten. The group enjoyed a fine breakfast, and Victoria enthusiastically threw her head back, and shoved a great loaf of meat into her maw. Exactly as Hector was want to do.

Jonathan laughed heartily, and Victoria suddenly realized she might have given offense.

But she was given reassuring smiles, "We see echoes of Hector in many of your mannerisms." Shelly said to the harpy. "It will be very enjoyable when you two are finally introduced."

Far away, Hector sailed across the sky, carrying his husband Shelton. The pony knew that Hector was becoming very tired, and the mid day sun was very warm. Hector panted heavily from the heat, and his labors. They had departed the temple very late in the morning, and it would be well after dark when the pair arrived back in Albany. Shelton guessed their land speed at fifty miles per hour, and he generally knew which county they flew over. It would be very late indeed when they arrived back home.

***

The Silverstone family strolled through the garden with Victoria. Eleanor asked the tall eagle, "What career pursuits do you enjoy?" Victoria smiled, "I repair, and maintain time pieces." "Ah!" Eleanor said, smiling, "Hector also enjoys mechanical devices!" Victoria was happy, it seemed they did have much in common.

"Victoria," Shelly asked, "What do you remember of Hector's mother?" Victoria frowned, trying to remember. "I was very young..." the harpy said softly. "But I recall that she was very angry. Always angry." Shelly cast her eyes downward, she thought of her old tendency toward anger. She was happy that her temper had mellowed of late, and that she had found a new happiness in her life with the eagles. It seemed that Eleanor coming into her life had saved her not only from loneliness, but also from the possibility of becoming the terrible person she had been in her past life. Shelton, he had been there with her through the worst of her anger. He had not only been her valued sight, but he had also been her tower of strength. He had kept a flame of love burning inside her heart. Keeping the echo of Isadora's rage from tainting her new equine being. Her pony's being was greater than the might of any eagle's. "Oh, Shelton..." the mare whispered. Realizing he had done so much more for her. More than she ever knew, and could fully appreciate, until now.

Settling down on the grass, the assorted animals enjoyed a fine late afternoon. Shelly also found it very fitting that in this new life she wore an eagle's eyes. She slowly reconciled the fact that she had been Isadora Ironwing. But that woman was no more. And slowly, the image from Shelly's dream began to fade. Just as the anger that had festered in her heart had been turned into love. Shelly was indeed a new person. But she thought of Hector in a totally new light. She felt a pang of maternal longing for the harpy. She wished she could somehow reveal to him who she had been, and how sorry she was for everything that had happened to him.

Soon, the sun began to set, and the family was settling down to another fine meal. They looked expectantly at the doorway, hoping that at any moment Hector would rush in. But he did not.

Far away in the deep forest of the Sanvean, Virgil arrived back at the Brownfoot home. He had fashioned a sling for Jarred, and the boy's slender frame was cradled very comfortably during his flight back home. Virgil found the door bolted, and he tapped his claws upon the doorway. Catherine answered, "Virgil!" She cried, "Jarred!" The mother put her arms around her son, and tears welled up in her eyes.

Benjamin looked very haggard, and he clasped his hand to Virgil's arm. "It is good to see you, my friend." As virgil looked around, he saw that the children's eyes were red, and tear streaked. Benjamin's spear was nearby, and Timothy also clutched his weapon. "What has happened?" Virgil asked. "The beasts," Benjamin said, "They were attacking the house. They fled shortly before you arrived."

Virgil stood stunned, "The tuskers?" he asked. "Aye." Benjamin nodded gravely. Virgil put his hand on Benjamin's shoulder. "Fear not, I will see that you are evacuated to Albany within two days time." Catherine sighed heavily, her face wore a great thankfulness. Virgil nodded, and set about checking the residence for damage.

Across the night sky, Hector saw the lights of Albany coming into view. "Look!" Shelton called. Hector hugged his pony, "I never want to make this flight again!" Hector called, "At least not for a while!" The two made their way across the hills, Hector made a wide arch, and began to trim his air speed. Slowly, he made his way down and landed in the garden of the Silverstone home. Shelton unbuckled himself, and groaned loudly.

The house was dark, and none stirred at their arrival. "It must be very late." Hector said quietly. The pair made their way to the door, and as Hector slowly opened it, he was met with a mirror image of his face. His eyes went wide, and the other called "Hector!" Victoria threw her arms around her cousin, and Hector hugged her mightily. Their wings flapped against one another, and as Shelton enjoyed the happy meeting the lights of the home began to flicker on.

"Victoria..." Hector said, "This is my husband Shelton!" Hector took his stallion's hand, and proudly presented the pony to his kin. Victoria smiled, and bowed graciously to Shelton. "A pleasure!" Victoria said. Soon Eleanor, Paul and the two golden eagle boys made their way down into the gallery, and everyone settled down on the large sofa.

Shelly heard the commotion downstairs, and rolled out of bed. She looked out over the railing to Hector, happily uniting with the kin he never knew, and Shelly again felt an odd pang of remorse. She knew that the deeds of her past self had no bearing on her current life. Or did they?

Her life has certainly been dealt many tragedies. The loss of her parents, her blindness, her years of isolation. She refused to believe that the misdeeds of past lives affect an innocent person in their new life. But the evidence was there. Shelly then resolved that she would do all she could to be the best parent she could to her Shean. She had been given an enormous blessing in his conception, and that had to mean something. If she was being offered a chance at redemption, then she would fulfill it.

Shelly smiled, and went back into her room. She would let hector enjoy his meeting. Laying back onto her bed, she smiled at Hector's voice ringing up from the gallery. Bright with excitement, filled with so much hope. He had found a kin that Shelly knew he had always longed to have. A connection to his family that was lost to him. Shelly then knew that even though his former parents had scarred him terribly, Hector still missed them, and longed to know them. "Sweetheart..." Shelly whispered.

***

The next day, Shelly woke very late in the morning. She rose, and looked out of her large window. Hector was in the garden, talking with Victoria. He looked so happy, It filled Shelly with a strange inner warmth to see him so fulfilled.

As if part of her former self did rejoice in her son's happiness. This was all so strange, she was worried she would mix up which animals were the parents of the other. Shelly made her way to the stairway, and slowly descended into the gallery. Eleanor and Paul were sitting on the sofa, and they smiled warmly to Shelly. The mare made her way to the sofa, and sat down. "Good morning dear." Eleanor said. Shelly smiled, her expression very far away. Then, she asked her kind mother "Do you remember my visions?" Eleanor nodded. "I had another recently." "Oh?" Eleanor asked. Shelly looked plaintively to her mother. "In my past life, I was Isadora Ironwing. I was Hector's mother."

Paul shifted in his seat, very confused by the strange admission. And Eleanor said nothing. The mother eagle remembered all of the personal things Shelly had told her of her Justin. Things that only Justin and his mother would have known. She knew that Shelly's recent vision of Victoria's search had come to pass. There could be no denying the truth of Shelly's visions. She had touched the spirit world, and she now had a window into that realm's secret knowledge.

Eleanor looked to the mare, and tears were streaming down Shelly's face, wetting her eagle's eyes in a way that could never have happened when her son had worn them. "Shelly..." Her mother said, "I love you so much sweetheart." Shelly broke into a racking sob, and Eleanor reached out to the mare, and held her close. "You poor dear..." Eleanor said gently. "Want to hear the best part?" Shelly said through her sobs, "Victoria's spirit is that of my former mother. And the one she will marry is my former father!" Eleanor's eyes widened, and Shelly wet the feathers her adopted mother's chest with her tears. Shelly felt as if the creator was playing a cruel game with her.

Just then the two harpy eagles burst in through the front door, talking excitedly about Hector's motorbike. "Hector..." Eleanor called, "Please come here." Shelly sat up suddenly, a fearful look in her eyes. "The truth must be told Shelly, or the weight of it will slowly crush your heart." Shelly shook her head, "No momma, please..." But Eleanor put her finger to Shelly's lips.

She asked the harpy, "You know the truth of Shelly's visions?" Hector nodded, suddenly concerned, "Is Virgil alright?" he asked.

"Yes sweetheart. It is something else entirely. It deals with souls, and the interplay that can happen when past lives touch." The two harpy eagles seated themselves, and Eleanor slowly revealed all that Shelly had confessed to her. And as the matriarch spoke, Shelly felt an enormous weight was indeed being lifted from her heart. Hector's beak parted slowly, but his expression was unreadable. Shelly slowly slid off of the sofa, and crawled on her hands and knees to Hector's feet. "I'm so sorry Hector! Please..." But the harpy eagle joined her on the floor. He took her face in his hands, and he touched his beak to her nose. "You have nothing to apologize for Shelly. For that is your name, is it not?"

Shelly gently kissed his beak, "I was once someone else, and..." But Hector cupped her mouth in his hands, quieting her. "I love you, and if there is something I need to forgive, then I forgive you." Shelly closed her eyes, as streams of tears ran down her cheeks. "I love you too, Hector." She gasped. Victoria thought of what Eleanor had said of the visions, that she had been Shelly's mother, and that Timothy had been her husband in a past life. Vicky thought of her dream, how she had dreamt of Timmy, and how she had seen him as the horse he had once been. She knew in her heart that it was all true, and she yearned for Timothy all the more. Victoria reached out, and touched Shelly's face. Shelly saw the connection that Victoria now felt. She understood, and Shelly was very happy. The mare leaned back, and rested herself between Eleanor's thighs. She closed her eyes, and slowly wiped the tears away from her face.

Just then the telephone rang, and Paul rose to answer it. "Ah, Virgil!" He said, answering. "What's that?" Paul began writing down information on a scrap of paper. The others looked on, wondering what was happening. "Flight 12, Albany Airport, 4pm. Right, got it!" Paul finally bid Virgil goodbye, "Okay son, we will be there tomorrow!" Paul set the receiver down. He turned, and an odd smile crossed his face. "It appears we shall have some company for a little while." he said. Eleanor looked quizzical, "Who?" Paul smiled, "The Brownfoot family. All of them."

Later that night Shelly bid her family goodnight, and slowly made her way to the stairwell. Hector and Victoria suddenly came to her, and each took a place at her side. Carefully guiding the pregnant mare up the stairs. Shelly looked lovingly to each of them as they helped her to her bedchamber. Hector lowered himself to his knees, and put his face to Shelly's breast. Shelly cradled his huge head, and kissed each of the feathers of his crest.

Victoria then knelt beside Shelly, and her eyes were filled with a different kind of love. She ran her fingers through Shelly's mane, and her eyes seemed to smile with pride. Shelly took Victoria's hand, and pressed her lips to it. Perhaps the creator was not playing a cruel game after all, Shelly thought. "Goodnight." The eagles said in unison, and Shelly smiled sweetly.

"See you tomorrow..." Shelly said with great emotion. The mare laid down on her bed, and got as comfortable as she could. Soon Shelly was dreaming, and a vision came to her. In her vision the grey harpy eagle Isadora Ironwing stood by a placid reflective pool. It was night, and all was bathed in beautiful silver moonlight. Shelly drew near to the eagle, and the image of Shelly's former life regarded the mare, but the eagle's face was no longer stern. Isadora lowered herself to her hands and knees, and touched her beak to Shelly's feet, begging the mare for forgiveness. Pleading to Shelly for a chance of redemption.

Shelly knelt, and took the mother harpy into her arms. "Please..." Shelly said to her former self, "I forgive you. Please don't cry." The mother harpy gasped, and bowed her head. Shelly lovingly stroked and smoothed the feathers of Isadora's crest. "What has happened is in the past, Isadora. Hector is healed now, and I am happy to be in his life."

Shelly thought of Victoria, Timothy, and Hector. She was now reunited with the souls of all she had ever loved, and she cast her gaze up to the silver moon. She thanked the creator for his mercy. The image of Isadora Ironwing turned to mist, and slowly became the image of her son Shean. "Shean..." Shelly asked smiling, "Was that you the whole time?"

And her son nuzzled her cheek, "Before another can offer you forgiveness, you must first forgive yourself." Shelly smiled, and held her son close. The two gazed into the beauty of the creator's reflective pool, until Shelly at last faded from her dream, returning into wakefulness. The moon above shined it's light down lovingly, and the stars of the firmament patiently awaited Shelly's next visit.
