#1 of A Slice Of Lexi

This is mostly for my personal writing pleasure, yet I thought I'd share it anyway. The pacing for this seems to toggle a bit, and I'm just enjoying writing a slice of life, even if it does seem more adventurous than that.

A Slice of Lex

By Jen Harlow

Like most spring mornings Lexi was sleeping in, wrapped in her blue and black striped blanket like a wolf burrito. She was snoring gently, oblivious to the rain pattering gently on her window, the small window unit humming blissfully. The calm and quiet room, cooled to just the perfect degree was ideal for sleeping, and with no work until the afternoon, who was to stop her? All of this, of course, came crashing to a halt when the room was suddenly filled with the opening riff of Soul Eater - Resonance. Letting out a murmured profanity, she rolled over, peeling her eyes open to check her phone. The picture was of a badger, wearing glasses, and a black work shirt, with a scowl set on his face. The text below read simply: Justin. Knowing her boss didn't like to be kept waiting, she quickly answered the phone. "Hey Justin, what's up? You need me in early?"

"Actually no," The voice said from the other end, he actually sounded... chipper?

Who are you and what have you done with my beloved grumpy boss, Lexi thought as she sat wearily. "So? What's got you in a good mood?" She said, stifling a giggle.

"What are you talking about, I'm always in a good mood until you come to work." He replied chuckling, "Between the rain causing the park to close, and the fact that work crew is two weeks ahead of schedule, our department has been given the weekend off."

Lexi fought back the urge to yell 'WOOHOO!' into her boss's ear. Instead she simply said "cool thanks, See you next Friday."

"No problem, why don't you use this time to catch up on the class work you probably slacked off on, if your work ethic is any indication of how you treat your studies." There was a momentary pause before he chuckled and hung up.

Okay, now I'm really scared... She thought, not sure how to cope with her boss in such a good mood so early in the morning. She put her phone back down on her end table, and rolled over attempting to go back to sleep. After fifteen minutes of laying under her blanket, quietly humming show-tunes, she gave up on the effort. Kicking her blanket off, she stood up naked in front of the air-conditioner, looking out the window. With the lower blind pulled, and being on the fourth floor, most anyone looking would have merely seen a black wolf head peering out at the rainy world without. Sighing deeply she walked over to her closet. She withdrew her towels and her favorite PJ's, a black pajama top covered in pink, blue and purple hearts, and a pair of blue bottoms with multi-colored swirls going around them. She headed to the bathroom. She knocked on the closed door, listening for a knock indicating her neighbor was using the shared room. After a few seconds she knocked again. Satisfied that no one was inside she opened the door and slid into the shower, leaving her clothes on the wire shelf outside. She turned on the water, setting it to be almost skin-meltingly warm. She sighed as the water warmed her shoulders, which were always sore when she woke up. Just as she was beginning to start running the body-wash through her fur, there was a knock on the door leading to her neighbor's apartment. "Come in Christine, I'm in the shower so you won't see anything." Not that it would've been any big deal. The two were practically sisters at this point and had accidentally walked in on each other doing worse, especially since a particular one of them slept in the buff. They even worked together, as well as Lexi's girlfriend. They had seen each other change at least a couple hundred times, after a while any mystery gets lost.

The door opened and shut quietly as the gray mouse slipped into the bathroom. There was the small thump of the toilet lid opening, followed by a trickling. After she got up, Christine gently tapped the glass of the shower, indicating that Lexi should point the shower head away from her for a second, a good thing too, because when Christine had flushed a jet of hot water would of gone shooting directly into her crotch as she was rinsing the shampoo off. Now is probably the best time to explain, Christine was left mute after an experimental epilepsy treatment when she was a small child, and the two have had to think of some creative ways to communicate when Christine can't sign or write something. Christine's door opened and shut again. Lexi finished her shower washing her hair, carefully checking that the electric blue stripe hadn't yet started to fade. Stepping out of the shower onto the fish-shaped bath mat Christine had bought, Lexi noticed the message written in the fog on the mirror, it said "Knock on my door when you're done in there, I would like a shower too!"

After dressing in her pajamas, Lexi reached over and knocked on the door, before wiping the fog away from the mirror enough to see her face. She was combing her wet hair out as Christine walked in. Christine was wearing, what Lexi considered to be, the most adorable outfit on the face of the earth. It was a pink pajama top, which showed her midriff complementing her shape, with a large white teddy bear nestled gently between her small breasts, and a pink pair of comfortable looking shorts which showed the slender grace of her legs. Lexi looked at herself in the mirror, comparing the two images quietly, Lexi was taller and a bit heavier having somewhat of a muffin-top, her legs weren't slender but were still well shaped, her hair longer (going down to the small of her back) than Christine's short brown hair, her own having been dyed jet-black except for a cyan stripe just off the side off her right eyebrow. Her focus shifted back to Christine. Christine was facing away from her, but had already removed her top and was sliding her shorts down. She was wearing a pair of black boy-short panties underneath. Lexi, without meaning to, let her eyes lock onto her bum. No bad Lexi, she thought, you have a girlfriend! Just then Victoria crossed her mind. "Hey Christine," She said looking back towards the frosted glass, "Since we have the day off work, want to grab Mat, my girlfriend and my brother and maybe go do something?" The answer was a single quick knock on the frosted glass door. "I'm thinking maybe lunch at Jim's then maybe catching a movie, sound good?" There was a second quick knock on the glass. "Cool, I'll go call them and see if they're game. I know Victoria would be interested at least."

Lexi turned, gave the shower door a single quick tap, and walked back into her apartment. The apartment was nothing glorious everything was contained within a single room, with her bed in one corner, with a curtain to pull around it. In one corner was a small kitchenette, with a fridge, a microwave, a sink, two electric burners, a toaster oven (which she herself had purchased,) and five cabinets: three above the sink and stove, and two in the counters. The apartment building had been built in an "efficiency" style, where a single inhabitant could live quite comfortably, especially if (at the price she was paying) they didn't mind sharing a bathroom. She hadn't known Christine before she moved in, but after about a month they quickly became the non-related siblings they are today. The air-conditioning felt amazing after being in the warm bathroom, and it made Lexi tempted to crawl back into her nice warm bed and curl back up into a Lexirito. Instead she grabbed her phone and kicked back in the recliner sitting in-front of her computer desk, which was just in front of her bed, past the curtain. She checked Discord, only finding Victoria online. She picked up her headset and un-muted her mic. She heard Victoria on the other end chatting with her brother; "Good morning oh beautiful flower, oh queen of my life, owner of the most delicious pussy in the world." Lexi said, catching Victoria's brother mid-sentence.

She heard peals of laughter on the other side from Victoria's brother. "I had my headphones out!" Victoria said, attempting to sound angry even though it was clear she was trying to stop herself from joining her sibling.

"Oh I'm aware." Lex said casually, checking her nails. Even though her gesture was completely unseen it made her smile.

"Go away Loser" Victoria said, still attempting to sound angry.

Lexi gasped, "and after I gave you such beautiful praise, such wonderful prose? How dare you madam!

"Not you, you will pay for this later on, quite possibly with repeated samplings of said delicacy." Victoria said, this was however followed by, "Okay seriously, go away now or I'm going to start talking to her about how I feel our periods might have synched up." Her brother said something muffled on the other side and closed the door, "I have never seen a guy move that fast." Lexi imagined the fox was smiling, figuring herself the cleverest lady in all existence. "So what's up gal-o-mine?"

"Not much, since Justin gave us the day off I figured we could go do something."

"What did you have in mind? I mean, I could think of something to do..." Victoria let out a cackling laugh, like a witch in a b-movie.

"As much as I'm simultaneously curious, afraid, and strangely aroused by that tone, I did have a plan. Maybe we could put your plans into action later tonight? Think I could stay over at your place tonight?"

"Yeah, that shouldn't be a problem, Mom loves having you over. Especially because that gives her equal chance to prod you about us getting married."

Lexi laughed, shaking her head. "I know, it's like, whoa slow down woman! We've been dating for three years, yes, but neither of us is ready for it. Besides, I promised I'd let you be the one to decide the pace of this relationship, and I'm still comfortable with that decision."

"Yeah, I appreciate that," the young fox sounded distant yet in a good way, "anyway what plans did you come up with, my paychecks burning to be spent!"

"I just figured we'd do Jim's and a movie, maybe a game night tonight too?"

"Alright, I'll be over at your place in a few, love you lots!" With that she disconnected.

Victoria was the most amazing girl that Lexi had ever dated, boasting beautiful red fur and hair (dyed with a black stripe off her left eyebrow,) green eyes, and an equally fucked up sense of humor compared to Lexi's. She was about medium height, and like Lexi slightly chubby, which made her all the more attractive to her partner. They met while working, she was the stage manager at a theatre in an amusement park, Lexi was the light-designer, after a while they convinced Christine to join with her excellent sound design skills, Victoria growing just as fond of the mouse as Lexi. She was also responsible for being part of afore mentioned awkward situations involving unlocked doors and nude canines.

Next on the list of people to contact was Mat, her friend since she was about ten. He was a cat, taller than she was and about three years older. He also had short black hair, which he sometimes cut down to even with his black fur. He was heavy like Lex and her lady. Mat worked for the IT department at the same theme park, joining after pressure from the trio of doom. He answered his phone, still ninety-percent asleep. "Hello?"

"Hey man, sorry to wake you up like this, I was just wondering if you'd like to maybe hang out today. Christine, Vic and I are headed for Jim's and then Tinseltown, wanna come?"

"mmm...." Was the only response she got for a moment, after listening to the cat breathe for what seemed like an eternity, hardly being more than two minutes, the cat finally spoke again. "Hello?"

"Hi, still me, still Jim's and a movie, still trying to see if you want to get out of your boring old bed and go have lunch with three fine ladies."

"Oh, yeah... Okay... Let me just get up and dressed and I'll see you in a few, okay?"

"Cool, see you when you arrive!"

Finally she dialed her brother, Daren. He was taller than her, but otherwise the two looked kind of similar, you could definitely tell they were related. They had the same white patch of fur on their chin, both liked to wear their hair longer, even though he had to have his cut for work, he basically looked like a taller masculine version of her. He answered, the wind rushing past indicated he was standing outside."What's up sis?" He said over the noise of the wind and the spatter of rain.

"Getting everyone together for lunch and a movie, you know where. You interested?"

"Sure, I was actually outside your apartment building anyway."

"What are you doing there?"

He quietly mumbled "I locked myself out at the park's parking lot, and I need your copy of the Nissan's key."

"Well don't just stand there, come on up!"

After a few minutes, there was a knock at her door. Opening it, she found the wet wolf, wearing his favorite Indiana Jones hat, and his long black trench coat and his replace isn't the right word t-shirt. His glasses were so fogged over it's a miracle he even found his way into the elevator. "I'm soaked." He said simply, stepping into her apartment, his red and white converse leaving large wet footprints in the blue carpet.

He flopped down onto her couch, sinking into the large green cushions. "Well now my couch is wet, thanks." Lex said, sticking her tongue out at the slowly sinking wolf.

"De nada," He said throwing her a sarcastic salute.

Christine knocked on the bathroom door, "it's alright you can come in" Lexi said. The mouse stepped into the room, she had changed into her school t-shirt with the blue and gold logo on the front, and a black skirt which stopped just at her knees. Lexi looked down, realizing that Victoria and Mat would be here within minutes. "I'd best go change hadn't I?" She said, grabbing her glasses case off her end table. She selected a plain black t-shirt and a pair of gray sweats, not dressing to impress today. She walked into the bathroom to change and throw her hair up into a quick pony-tail.

Victoria had keys to both Lexi and Christine's apartments, and thus let herself in. She had opted for the lazy day look as well, wearing a white tank and a pair of shorts, topped off with her most comfortable, if not paint covered, sneakers and hair that had not even seen a brush or comb that day. Geeze she's still amazingly pretty even dressed down like this, Lexi thought, moving in to kiss her girlfriend. The two kissed holding it for a couple seconds before letting go. "Lookin' fine today m'lady." Lex said, still holding hands with her girlfriend.

Just as Victoria was about to speak, Mat knocked on the door. He looked half asleep still, wearing his typical cargo pants and faded billiards shirt. "Hey." He said, looking as if he was trying not to fall over from pure effort of staying standing.

"Ah you poor baby" Victoria said wrapping her arms around his neck, "we need to get you some caffeine, you look absolutely awful."

"Food, soon... Won't last long without food and... Mt. Dew..." Mat said indicating over his shoulder.

The group descended down to the parking lot. Daren climbing into Mat's car, everyone else piling into Lexi's. Jim's cafe, one of the better eating spots in the area, was the cafe for Arlington West University. Redone over the years, the interior was still reminiscent of its construction during the mid 50's. The furniture resembled a diner-style restaurant, even though it was cafeteria style dining, and nineties music was softly playing over the speakers. The group got into the line, the smell of fresh cooked food making stomachs rumble loudly. Lexi walked up to the Burger Bar, looking at the foil wrapped temptations in front of her. "Hey!" A voice called from behind the bar, she looked up across the counter to see James, a friend of hers from the GSA on campus. The squirrel was beaming at her, "If you're interested in a burger I've got a couple about to come off fresh from the griddle." He said, pointing to where the meat was grilling.

"Ohh man, you have no idea how much I'd like that right now..." Lex said, rubbing her stomach to shut it up.

The young squirrel rushed to the grill, grabbing the patty (probactrosaurus if you must know, they're not savages here people.) "Whatcha want on it? The usual, how 'bout some bacon?"

"Yes please, to all of it!" The tray with a basket of fries slid over the top of the counter and into eager paws. "Thanks mate." She said, looking for her friends' table.

Mat was sitting at the table behind several slices of pizza, and a bottle of Throwback Dew. He waved a single wave in greeting, clearly reserving his talking port for caloric intake alone. Daren and Victoria arrived with plates piled full of spaghetti, followed shortly by Christine bearing a large bowl of salad. For such a tiny creature that girl seemed to have an entirely hollow body when it came to salad. Lunch passed with little in the way of conversation, mostly the three gals and the guys spent their time destroying large amounts of food, in that special way only college students can. Finally, four of them had finished eating, all except for Daren who appeared to have just started in on his food. Christine signed "What time should we go see our movie?"

"I dunno," Lexi said, pulling her phone out on the table, "if pokie here doesn't finish before tomorrow we might not even make a matinee." She gently nudged her brother in the ribs.

They settled on a late-matinee showing of Deadpool, a movie they'd already seen once, but was still good enough to go see again. It was a nice drive to the theatre, the rain had paused and the air was still a comfortable cool, in the middle of a spring heatwave. Being the middle of an afternoon on a weekday, the theatre was mostly empty. The ticket booths were closed up, bearing signs that read 'please see concessions for tickets'. The tickets were reasonable, so they also got a giant tub of popcorn and some candy to split between them. The auditorium for Deadpool only had two others seated in it, a couple by the way they looked sitting at the far back of the room. Vic giggled softly before whispering to Lexi "I bet they have some plans once the lights go down..."

Lex rolled her eyes a little "get your mind out of the gutter woman!" she scolded, gently elbowing her in the side.

They climbed to the middle row, taking as much space as they desired. Vic sitting directly into the seat next to Lexi, laying her head on her shoulder. "Aren't movies more romantic when you can share them with a date?" She said, batting her eyelashes at the wolf.

"Yeah, a movie about a man whose face looks like it's been through a garbage disposal in a red and black suit violently killing people is definitely what I would call a romantic date."

As Vic sat up to kiss Lexi's cheek she just happened to look past her. Christine sat with a vacant expression on her face, staring at the screen. The film hadn't started yet, but the trailer was showing a number of fast-paced action cuts. "Oh no," Victoria said, quickly pushing past Lexi. The wolf didn't even have to ask, putting two and two together she bolted quickly after her.

Christine dropped from the chair, seizing violently. One of the young moviegoers above screamed. Victoria, without thinking about it, quickly took her shirt off, bundling it under the mouse's head, leaving her wearing nothing but a bra. They rolled her gently onto her side, while Daren pulled his phone out to keep track of the time. After about three minutes, her body finally calmed. Victoria gently pressed her ear to the mouse's side, relieved to hear her soft breathing returning to normal. They waited for a moment to see if she was coming around. She lay motionless on the floor, another minute or so passed. Checking her breath once more, Lexi pushed the button on the little necklace Christine always wore when she left home.

"Hello, Service Life. Christine, I have your file here, is anyone around to talk for you? If not we can send an ambulance to your location."

"Hello!" Victoria said, "She's had a seizure, it lasted around three minutes, but she doesn't seem to be waking up yet."

"It's alright, I've sent a dispatch note to an ambulance, they should arrive on the scene shortly."

Christine finally woke up, after about two more minutes, immediately tapping Mat on the shoulder. "Hey you're up" he said, gently helping her roll onto her back. She made a sign mimicking the action of putting on glasses. "I don't know where they are, when you fell, they got knocked away." She blinked trying to get her eyes to focus, "don't worry, I'll find them for you."

Victoria was still talking to the Life Star people, keeping them updated on her condition, Daren was waiting outside for the ambulance to arrive, and Lexi was aiding in the search for her glasses. Christine was fighting the urge to fall asleep, almost afraid to.

"How are you feeling?" Vic asked, sitting on the floor next to her.

"Tired," She signed. Looking at Victoria, she suddenly realized what she had under her head. "Thank you... I'm sorry" She signed, her eyes starting to moisten with tears.

"Oh baby it's okay." She said wiping the mouse's eyes, "It's better than having your head on the floor I'm sure. It's not your fault either, you can't help it" She went back to talk with the Service Life people for a second, as they were asking for information. "Hey, they said you can take a rest if you feel tired, now that the worst part has past you're not in any danger if you need to close your eyes for a bit." With a weak sign of thanks, the mouse rolled back onto her side, letting her eyes shut for the minute.

Mat found her glasses, three rows down and missing a lense. "I found them, but the lense is nowhere nearby," he said still checking under the seats.

The manager walked in, ahead of a group of paramedics. He was apologizing profusely, handing them passes to come back another day. One of the paramedics, a young otter, helped Christine down the stairs. Even in the relatively weak state she was in, she managed to give Lexi and Victoria a small wink and a grin, not minding in the least that the strong young guy wanted her to hold onto him. After a brief discussion, Daren was decided to ride in the ambulance with her, while the rest followed in the two cars. Lexi sighed, she always felt sorry for the poor mouse whenever a seizure came, even knowing she'd be fine, it was still a horrifying feeling. The wolf and the vixen made the ride in quiet, each just glad of the others company right now.
