"She's in hospice, again." Barry said, slowly hanging up the phone. The wolf rubbed his temples with one hand while the other rolled the seam of his jeans between his thumb and forefinger. "Maria said she probably wont last a week."

He felt his wife's hands on his arms, on his neck. It brought him little comfort. He was losing the woman who raised him, gave birth to him. He dropped his hand slowly from his face and smiled at the woman, though it was a forced gesture. "I'm going to..."

She nodded and the corners of her black muzzle curled upward. The white fur surrounding her eyes brought out her brilliant blues. The sympathy, the love there brought him more comfort than her touch. "Go home, Barry," she said. "Go say goodbye."

He stared into her eyes for a moment then nodded. "I'll get packed." He gently pressed his lips to her own and sighed against her kiss. As he pulled away, she offered a sympathetic smile.

"I'll call the office and let them know you wont be in tomorrow."

He nodded his thanks and turned away. His feet carried him up the stairs and into their bedroom at the end of the hall. He retrieved a small suitcase from the closet and watched himself pack a few days' change of clothes and his toiletries.

He zipped the suitcase up and walked back downstairs. Liandra was there waiting for him at the bottom of the stairs. She followed him to the front door and out into the daylight that somehow looked a little less bright. His feet carried him down the front walkway to his car. He heard his wife pop the trunk with the remote on the keys. He dumped his suitcase there then walked to the driver door.

Liandra handed him the keys and touched his face. "Drive safe, Barry."

"I will," he said. "If you need anything, call Joe. He's got the weekend off anyway." Joe was his best friend, had been since mid-school. They were as close to family as two people could get without being blood.

As she nodded, he buckled himself in the driver's seat and closed the door. He took a deep, calming breath and started the ignition. He glanced at his mirrors and backed into the street. Numb as he had only ever been before when his father died, he put the car in gear and was off. It was worse this time, he decided. He and Dad hadn't been too terribly close. And now, after his mom was gone, that was it. His family growing up were gone.

He glanced in the mirror as he turned the corner and headed toward the interstate. Liadra stood at the end of the driveway, watching him go.

* * * * *

He pulled into the driveway and slowly parked the car just in front of the closed garage door. He killed the engine and pulled the key out. Dropping it into the cup holder, he unbuckled himself and opened the door with his left hand.

His hooves clopped on the concrete driveway and he hauled himself out of the car. He closed the door with a dull thump and walked to the front door. His hand lifted to the doorbell, but before it ever got there the door opened right up. He gave a start and stared inward.

In the doorway, Liadra stood in a bathrobe with a sadness in her eyes he hadn't seen in a very long time. He blinked and tilted his head to the side. He didn't know what to say. How did someone break the ice in this sort of situation anyway?

"Come in, Joe," she said and pulled the door open for him.

"Thanks, Li." He stepped into the house and offered her a small smile. "What did you need me to come over for?" he asked in as sympathetic a tone as he could. She looked pretty put off about something, but the husky opening the door in her bathrobe was something he was mostly used to.

"Barry's sister called a few hours ago," she began, folding her arms below her bust slowly. "His mother's in hospice again. They think she's not going to hang on for much longer."

Joe's face blanched and his jaw hung open slightly. "Oh." Well, that explained it. "I'm sorry to hear that. Did Barry take off to go see her?"

She nodded and bowed her head. "I don't like seeing him so hurt."

"Yeah," Joe agreed. "He and Mrs. W. were close. After high school, they were more like pals than mom and son. Mr. W., not so much." He gave a small chuckle and shrugged his shoulders. "Is there anything I can do for you, Li? Cup of tea or something?"

She nodded and pulled her arms apart slowly. With them, she pulled the sash of her robe loose about her waist, letting the light beige fabric hang open. His eyes had just dropped to the immaculate white fur of her ample breast and belly when she let the robe fall to the floor. Beneath it, she wore a lace red bra with matching garters. Her groin was exposed, sans matching panties.

"Really?" he asked with a disbelieving chuckle. "Your husband's going to say goodbye to his dying mother and you're after this?"

She nodded again, stepping close to him to press a hand down the front of his pants. Her digits expertly slipped beneath his boxers and caressed his thick sheathe and smooth orbs.

"It'll help keep me distracted," she said in a low, sultry tone. "You can keep me from thinking about it and getting sad." She smirked and lifted her free hand upward to brush her digits through his chocolate colored mane. "Besides, you aren't putting up much resistance."

"When there's an attractive bitch in lingerie holding your balls in the palm of her hand," he said, spreading his arms to either side, "what's a guy to do??
