#2 of Surface: Doomed Planet

It started with what I was sure would be a simple bounty job. Show up, kill a creature, get paid, go be lazy. What I got instead was a lab full of the most dangerous mutants I'd ever seen, a crazy scientist hell bent on genetic superiority, stranded on some unknown jungle planet and stuck in a race against the clock to beat one of the most deadly biological agents ever designed.

"They.....they shot you!", I said, tears coming to my eyes under my visor, "I watched them put a bullet in your head! I watched you die!?"

Chy looked up at me, a smile on her face. She pointed to a huge crack scar in her visor, the exit wound. She then reached out and pulled me into a hug.

"Where have you been all this time!?", I cried into her shoulder.

"I went to Bespin and joined the military", Chy said, "hoping I could track you down. And after all these years."

"You finally found me", I said looking into her eyes.

"I did", she smiled pulling me into a kiss. It had been so, so long since we kissed, something I thought I would never experience again. I was certain I would never find anyone else that loved me like she did, but now, I didn't need to. Even if it was all down hill from here, I would face it as long as I her and my friends by my side.

After what had to be about five minutes, Chy pulled away from me and hugged me.

"I missed you my boy", she said quietly.

"I missed you too baby girl", I said pulling her tightly to me.

"So your Chy?", James asked walking up to us, "Skyline told us about you."

"He did did he?", Chy asked as we stood up, "what he say?"

James shook his head, "he just said your "death" is what gave him the guts to finally kill those men and escape."

Chy looked at me, "did you, did you really kill them?"

"Oh I cut them to pieces", I said, "me thinking you were dead was the last nail in their coffin. But let's not dwell on the past. Are you here by yourself or with your unit?"

"By myself now", Chy sighed, "when my unit first came, there were 15 of us, two weeks ago there were 8, now it's just me. It's been one disaster after another since that Missile hit."

"Missile?", I asked.

She nodded, "Bespin had a pact with the Government of Ania, when they need help, we send it. It was two days after we arrived that the missile smashed into the city, spreading whatever the hell this virus is in a green mushroom cloud."

"Staff Sargent", Sarah said stepping forward, "permission to interject?"

"Of course", Chy said.

"My name is Sarah, I'm a biologist working for Biosphere labs, the chemical contained in the missile was Agent 41, a deadly virus that is a cross breed of two gene splicing bacteria, The missile was launched by a man named Doctor Martin Denis, a man who attempted to use the virus to mutate and "perfect" humans."

Chy sighed, 'doesn't seem like it worked too well...or at least not any more."

"Anymore?", I asked.

"When the creatures first hit, they were so quick we thought they were just Primals, but then about four days later, they stopped and fell over, we thought they were dead, but then two days after that, they got back up, slow, stubborn and refuse to fall to anything short of a head shot, "Chy explained.

"I think I know why", Sarah said, "Martin said once or twice that he had some kind of telekinetic control over the infected. I remember him saying that he worked a fail safe into the virus so that if he lost control it would keep spreading. It's possible that when Skyline killed him and removed that telekinetic link, that the virus mutated into a different strain, I can find out for sure, but I need much better lab equipment than a 1st grade chemistry set."

Chy sighed, "it doesn't really matter at this moment, what matter's is getting to safety, and this place isn't safe. Grab your gear and follow me."

'Where too?", I asked.

"I'm hiding out at a life guard tower at the resort with a few other people", Chy said, "There's only one other person there who has any idea what to do around a firearm, but she's not exactly brave, so we need to hurry back."

I turned back to my friends, "you heard the lady, let's grab our shit and get going!"

Having said that, we returned to the ship and quickly gathered up our equipment. I loaded my magazines onto the power armor suit and entered it, Alcatraz agreeing to foot my equipment. I didn't think the suit was going to be that practical, but it was better to take it and not need it, then to need it right now and have it be so far out of reach I'd never get to it. Once we had everything we could carry, Chy lead us out of the forest and down to the beach. I'd been to the beach before on school field trips, but I'd never seen sand so white and water so clear. The way the Supertrees cast their shadows on the sand and water was...soothing. Damn, someday after this had blown over, I might not mind spending the weekend here.

"Man this hell sure does look like paradise", Chy sighed as she walked beside me.

"We'll face it together", I said, my voice coming out as an electric, MP3 sounding answering machine voice.

Chy sighed and muttered something to herself before speaking to me telepathically.

"You seem confident we can get out of this alive", she said.

"I am", I said, "if anyone can find a cure it's Sarah and the more processing power we hand Tyler, the better off we'll be. After all the shit you and I have been through, together and apart, Agent 41 will be lucky to take a bite out of us."

"Your right", Chy smiled.

We walked long the beach for about ten minutes, admiring the scenery, right up until we hit a small wall with a doorway, once we went through that, that was when the piles of blood and guts started. I couldn't shoot a sideways glance without feasting eyes on at least four or five corpses. Many of them were just skeletons, their bones picked clean of flesh, only dried blood remaining. Some of them had a little meat left, while a few of them were missing limbs, but otherwise in one piece.

"Fuck me", Sarah sighed, "how quickly did this shit spread?"

"Like a plague", Chy said, "the cities were the first to fall, then it moved out from there. I don't think there's an inch of Ania that's been spared."

"We have a long fight ahead of us", I sighed.

"Nothing we can't handle", Allen said.

"Hooah", Mike replied.

Chy slowed our pace a little bit to search the still, reasonably fresh looking bodies, saying she was looking for three main things, ammunition, painkillers and cash.

"Money?", I asked, "what good will money do us?"

"There are still some people willing to take cash in exchange for supplies", Chy said, "when ever I go out scavenging I always take a little bit with me."

I shrugged, "I'll make sure to keep an eye out then."

Chy finished patting down the bodies and then lead us up a few flights of stairs. We had just come over a taller stair case when we heard gunfire and shouting.

"Chy!", A female's voice cried, "where are you!"

"Hold on Sonya I'm coming!", Chy shouted. She took off running down a cobblestone walk way and I immediately followed after. She swiped a security card on a chain link gate which opened to a parking lot. Bashing against the white stucco walls of the life guard tower were at least 2 dozen of our brain dead mutant friends along with a few humans who were experiencing the same condition. Upon seeing this, I guessed the virus had mutated to the point where full transformation only occurred if you were hit with a Facehugger. If you weren't it just added you to the ranks of what I guessed were simple zombies at this point.

"Chy!", the voice shouted again, I looked up in the direction of the voice and spotted another female Xenomorph, looking like she was very, very worn out, "one of them got inside, it won't be long until he makes it inside!"

"Hold on we got it covered!", Chy yelled.

She swapped her sniper rifle for her AR-10 and set into the crowd of zombie like mutants. As the drew near us, I simply started swinging my Katana, using the power armor's increased strength to hack through six or seven at once with little difficulty and it didn't take long for us to disperse the crowd.

"Sonya", Chy shouted, "where's the other zombie at!?"

"In the garage", Sonya shouted, "I'll open the garage, be careful! He's huge!"

Sonya disappeared behind the handrail and the garage door on the front of the tower began to open, revealing a huge man with signs of partial Xenomorphic mutation in the form of various chitin covered spots on his body and man was he pissed to see us. He let off a deep growl and began to slouch forward to us. Chy stepped forward, but I blocked her advance.

"Hold up baby girl", I said telepathically, "this might be worth something to Sarah."

Chy nodded and stepped back, holding her AR-10 as close to her shoulder as she could, trying to be discreet about being ready to jump to my rescue. I looked at the thuggish man shuffling towards me with a thousand yard stare, growing and gurgling what I guessed was his own blood. I spun my Katana in my hand, I doubted it would work to agitate it to attack, which was what I wanted, but one way or another, he was coming with me.

"Come on big guy", I said luring him out into the court yard, "let's play."

When he lunged at me, I simply held my blade out and he impaled himself on it, the blade punching clean through his own head. I stepped back, using my telekinetic ability to remove my blade from his head and place it back in it's sheath.

"Problem solved", I said, "Sarah, can you do anything with this?"

"Maybe", she said stepping forward, "though in hindsight the cure is the furthest thing from my mind right now. Let's just get inside."

"Good idea", I said in agreement. We all walked inside and Chy shut the door behind us as I disembarked the power armor and Chy's friend Sonya came down to meet us.

"Chy!", she said, 'where the hell have you been!?"

"Rescuing my boyfriend and his friends", Chy said, "Sonya, this is Skyline."

Sonya shot quick glances between me and Chy.

"Wait", she stuttered, "skyline as in...Prince Skyline? And The Bounty Hunter? That Skyline?"

Chy smiled proudly, "yep, that's him."

"How the fuckshit do you get him?", Sonya asked.

Chy laughed, "We were both slaves and met by accident, that's how. You believe in love at first sight?"

"I didn't", Sonya said, "but I do now."

"Anyway Sonya, how were things while I was gone?", Chy asked.

"Well", Sonya said, "things got a little worse, the main generator died, so now were on back up. Back up doesn't run the AC."

Chy sighed and took off her jacket, "no wonder it's so hot in here, oh well, I'll see what I can do later. For now though, I wanna get Skyline and the others up to speed, so see what you can do to keep everyone else in line. You blow off any shells while I was gone?"

"I went through about 6 rounds", Sonya said holding up her M1 Garand, "I've only got this and one other clip left."

Chy sighed, "so add ammunition to the list of problems. Anyway, follow me upstairs and I'll give you a rundown of what's going on."

I followed Chy upstairs and so did the rest of my friends. Chy led us across a wooden roof that had three tents on each side of it, all of which were occupied by hungry, thin looking humans and Xeno's, some of them with mates and all of them were barely dressed in swim wear. Every single person across both species, including a bunch of the kids, looked frail, tired and ready to collapse at the first sign of trouble. These people had been utterly torn down and crushed into dust by one man who in three months had ruined more lives than Hitler did in three years. Chy brought us to a smaller building that was holding a tall radio tower and walked inside. She had a computer, looking like it wasn't powered, a bed that was neatly made and a few magazines of .60 caliber and .308 NATO ammunition stacked neatly by a jar of powder, box of lead and a makeshift reloading press. Chy set her weapons against the desk and then sat down in an office chair with a sigh.

"Skyline....you said you killed the man responsible for this virus?",

I nodded, "after playing standoff and cat and mouse with him for about three months."

Chy sighed.

"You okay sweetheart?", I asked, "you seem even more worn out than I am."

"I doubt I actually am", Chy said, "keeping the people here from going insane has to be a lot easier than facing down the madman that caused this mess."

I sat down against the wall, "I can tell it hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for you either, so why don't you tell me what's wrong, and I'll do everything I can to help you."

'Are you sure?", Chy asked, "you sure you don't want to rest for a bit?"

"Stress equals death", Allen said.

"I'm aware", I said, "but technically, I'm still on the job, what can I do to help?"

"Well Chy said, "my primary concern right now is getting the main generator, and thus the air conditioning running again, another concern I have is ensuring that the creatures, undead, ghouls, zombies, whatever you wanna call them, but I'm saying zombies, can't get in through the windows. We have a lot of screws and metal grate up here so that shouldn't be a problem. Then... there's the food problem."

"I have some experience with bitchy generators", Mike said, "if it's a Briggs & Stratton Meth Injected V8, I have a pretty good guess what the problem is."

"I'm not one for manual labor", Jacob said, "because in horror movies just like this situation, those people usually die a horrible death, but, I'll get working on those windows."

"Well, that leaves the food problem", I said, "so tell me about that."

"Everything we bring back disappears as quickly as it comes", Chy said, "the last one on my unit, Vahq, went out with Sonya's friend Kyle two days ago and they haven't come back yet. They got the truck we'd been using as well, so if you can, bring that back, but finding Kyle and Vahq and getting as much food back here as you can is the top priority."

"Okay", I said, "Alcatraz and I will work on that."

"And Sarah", Chy said, "you said you needed better lab equipment?"

"Yeah", Sarah said, "light years ahead of the test tube rack I have now."

Chy sighed, "then come with me to the infirmary, there's not much down there, but there's some seemingly high end equipment you might beable to use. And Tyler, Skyline told me that your good with computers?"

"I dabble", Tyler said.

"Then your welcome to all the electronics in the Lifeguard Tower, just don't take people's phones, that's what's been keeping everyone's minds off the hunger."

"I'll do everything I can with what I got", Tyler said.

"The rest of us will do what we can to help out", James said standing and leaving with the others, leaving myself, Chy and Sarah.

"Hey Sarah", Chy said, "you can head down stairs and check out the infirmary for yourself if you want, just duck into the supply closet, Dylan should be in there. He'll know what your talking about."

Sarah smiled and left, leaving just me and Chy.

"Hey Sky", She said, "you never answered my question all those years ago."

"What question?", I asked.

"Why it was that you always wanted to go back to live in that drug shack", Chy said.

"You want the truth?", I asked.

She nodded.

"The reason I always went back was because I'm very sure they had a tracker on me", I told her, "which is how I think they found us that night."

Chy slumped back in her chair, "that explains it."

"You know", I said standing up, "you're the reason I've lived as long as I have. If you and I had never met...I would be dead right now, no question about it. I'm alive because of you, and I've never told you that."

Chy smiled, stood up and put her arms around me, "not like you've had the chance."

She pulled me into a quick kiss, "find Vahq and Kyle, grab the food and get back safe."

"I will", I smiled, "I promise."
