#14 of Partners to the End

"All right you guys ready?" Keith asked, leaning against the wooden gate.

"Yeah," the rest of the Rovers whispered.

Keith and Hunter opened the large gate and everyone stepped in with their guns ready.

"Is this.....a tribal village?" Exile asked curiously.

The area inside the wall consisted of wooden huts made out bamboo and various types of trees, exactly what you might see in a tribal village. Some were high off the ground on pillars, while some were on the ground. There were two branching paths separated by plants leading into the central area where a fire was burning, but the village seemed vacant and still.

"It's too quiet, yet another trap....." Blitz sighed.

"Shh. Split up and take the separate paths, watch for anything suspicious." Keith ordered.

Blitz and Exile took the left path, Hunter and Keith the right one.

Crunch...Crunch.....

Hunter stopped in his tracks and said "We're not alone....."

The others stopped and listened, and sure enough they heard the same sounds.

"Where is it coming from?" Exile radioed.

"Over the wall, everyone get to the central area!" Keith barked.

The dogs ran down the paths to where the fire was, and then they heard Indian calls. Suddenly several dark gray dogs in grass skirts lept over the wall with spears and began laughing maniacally at their intruders. The Rovers raised their weapons in preparation for the onslaught, and then the fight began. Two of the tribal dogs ran at the group at top speed a]in attempt to spear the rovers, but were brought down by perfect head shots by Blitz and Exile.

"Heh....these guys are...." Exile began.

"WATCH OUT!" Blitz proclaimed, tackling Exile to the ground.

A few feet away one of the tribal dogs had leapt in the air and attempted to spear Exile from above, causing dust to fly everywhere in the process.

"Thanks comrade! I would have been shish kabob!" Exile laughed, getting up.

"No time for that! Let's move!" Blitz replied, pulling Exile backwards.

"Guys follow me!" Keith shouted "We're going to get surrounded!"

Keith led the rovers to an open gate that revealed a bride to what seemed like tall, windy bamboo building.

"Come on guys! Almost! SHIT!" Keith shouted, jumping backwards.

Suddenly the gate was sealed shut with spikes zooming up from the ground and the Rovers were trapped. They turned around in desperation only to find a huge group of tribal dogs pouring into the area and howling in blood lust. Keith looked around the area for a possible source of refuge/advantage point and he saw to the right what seemed to be a wide-plat formed watch tower a few yards down a circular path.

"Exile and Blitz, get to the top of that tower and provide some covering fire. Hunter and I will take the fight to the front lines." Keith explained, pointing to the destination.

"We also need to find the switch to open that gate. I don't want to stick around here for too long." Hunter added, pointing his handgun at the group.

"I bet it's in one of those buildings. Let's move!" Keith proclaimed.

Blitz and Exile ran along the path to the watch tower while Hunter and Keith began firing on the onslaught of dogs running towards them.

"Pyrkokinesis! Combustion!" Keith shouted, unleashing his powers so he could make a path through the dogs. The dogs fell into the piles of smoldering ash, and the two Rovers pushed into the giant mob.

"*pant* Come on Blitz! Almost there!" Exile urged, climbing the rickety wooden ladder to the top of the platform.

"I'm coming! WOAH!" Blitz screamed, holding onto the ladder for dear life. Three of the dogs below were shaking the ladder at an attempt to get the two Rovers to fall, however they were cut short by several machine gun blasts from Blitz.

"*pant, wheez*" Blitz breathed as he pulled himself onto the platform with Exile.

"You okay?" Exile asked.

"Yeah! Let's help out our buddies!" Blitz proclaimed, raising his machine gun. Exile and Blitz fired as fast as they could on the mob below, making sure not to hit Keith and Hunter in the process.

"*pant, wheez* Heh...heh..." Hunter panted as he fired his handgun and ran away from the crowd.

"These guys are tough!" Hunter shouted, switching to his shotgun. "Yeah! Quick check this building for a switch to the gate!" Keith replied, pointing to the large wooden Hut behind them. The two dogs ran inside only to be trapped with two wooden spikes sealing the entrance.

"NO!" Hunter proclaimed. Hunter and Keith looked around and saw three of the grass skirt clad dogs waving torches on the platform above.

"Comrades!? What's happening?!" Exile radioed.

"Were trapped! They're going to burn the place down with us inside it!" Keith radioed, targeting the middle dog.

"Were coming!" Blitz replied.

"No! Stay where you are and pick off the enemies outside. We need avoid all of us getting trapped." Keith barked into the mic, facing off with torch wielding dogs.

"But...!" Exile argued.

"Do as you're told!" Keith said, firing a torch out of one of the dog's hands, causing it to go out on the ground.

"Ok! We'll support you the best we can." Blitz said.

"What do we do Keith? There's no way out!" Hunter commented, attempting to stop one of the dogs from tossing his torch. Keith looked around and saw a switch on the second level.

"Hunter freeze these guys! I'll go for the switch on the second floor." Keith replied.

"Right! Deep Freeze!" Hunter shouted, waving his right paw.

The dogs were consumed in small pillars of ice and were made immobile. Hunter then proceeded to roundhouse kick the dogs, casing them to shatter into brilliant pieces. Keith climbed the ladder in the middle of the room to the second level and threw the switch, causing the spikes to disappear but more dogs rushing in. A few were picked off by covering fire from Exile and Blitz, causing blood to splatter all over the place. Keith jumped off the platform and began knifing and pushing through the crowd on the floor to get back outside, Hunter doing the same.

"Ha! Ya! Take that!" Keith proclaimed, slashing wildly through the tribal dogs.

Hunter and Keith eventually made it outside and were instantly surrounded again.

"Damn! There's no way out! What the?!" Hunter proclaimed. Suddenly two giant dogs with tribal masks leapt from the crowd in front of the Rovers, their huge, bloody spears gleaming in the sunlight. Hunter and Keith raised their weapons, then fired. Their shots hit, but bounced off the huge, metal masks protecting the dogs. The two dogs laughed menacingly and rushed forward, missing Hunter but impaling Keith.

"AUGH! HELP!" Keith cried out in intense pain. The dog impaling Keith lifted him into the art triumphantly and laughed, then threw him onto the ground.

"KEITH!" all the Rovers shouted.

"Hold on buddy! Exile! Blitz! Get rid of some of the crowd!" Hunter shouted.

"Right!" Blitz replied. "Ice Needles!" Hunter shouted, casting his icy fury on the giant dogs.

The dogs were knocked backwards as they were impaled by the ice bullets, giving Hunter the opportunity to move to Keith. Keith was coughing and hacking like crazy, blood pouring out from the center of his torso. Keith could make out shadowy figures in red dancing around him, but that's all he could make out.

SO MUCH PAIN! CAN"T MOVE! Keith thought.

"I'm coming!" Hunter shouted to Keith. Hunter pushed through the crowd the best he could, receiving help from Exile and Blitz.

Almost there!

"Healing!" Hunter shouted, waving his hand. Keith was suddenly given renewed energy to fight and stood up, his wound gone.

"Thanks Hunt. Let's finish these guys together!" Keith proclaimed.

"Inferno!"

"Extinction!"

A glorious display of fire and purple cell particles began consuming the dogs in the area, causing a brilliant flash of white. The aftermath was no more dogs and two tired Rovers.

"*pant* Man that was close!" Hunter breathed.

"Yeah......and look the gate's down!" Keith added, pointing while hunched over.

Exile and Blitz were watching in sheer awe at their fellow teammates powers.

Exile said "They're quite powerful aren't they?"

"Yeah. Whatever Shepherd was working on, he succeeded in these two." Blitz replied, shouldering his machine gun.

"I hate asking this, but can they be trusted?" Exile asked.

".......What makes you say such a thing?" Blitz questioned.

".......Nothing. Forget I said it." Exile replied, dropping the subject.

"Exile...?" Blitz asked.

"There's no time. Let's go." Exile said, climbing down the ladder.

Blitz looked at Keith and Hunter, shaking his head.

Hmm....what if. No. He's wrong. It's nothing.

Blitz climbed down with Exile and met up with their teammates, obviously worn out.

"You guys okay?" Exile asked, putting his hand on Hunter's shoulder.

"Yeah.....just a little worn out is all." Hunter replied with a weak smile.

"What about your wound Keith?" Blitz asked.

"I'm fine. All patched up thanks to Hunter here." Keith panted.

"Let's get going. I can smell the oil field, so that means were close to out destination." Keith finished. They proceeded to the gate that had been previously been sealed and walked slowly across the rickety wooden bridge leading to the windy bamboo building, making sure it wouldn't break underneath their weight.

"Easy guys....take it...." Keith urged

SNAP!

"RUN!"

The Rovers made a mad dash for the opening and dove in, barely missing a spike impaling death below.

"Damn....why do I always feel like I'm in a Indiana Jones movie?" Hunter joked, picking himself up.

The others just chuckled and looked around the room. The room they were in had an open window to the right revealing what seemed to be path to a makeshift wooden elevator leading upward.

"That's our way out, but how do we get there?" Blitz asked.

"Well we climb of course. There's a ramp leading upward to the second floor. Let's go." Keith replied, reloading his handgun. Everyone followed Keith to the ramp, but then something on a nearby table caught Hunter's eye.

What's that? A diary?

Hunter walked over to the bloodstained table where the diary was and surprisingly saw that it was in English.

September 2007 White man came to village to trade for supplies with Dog Humans. Seemed nice so we helped him out by giving him food and such. Next day he came back with "medicine" to help our sick people. He seem nice, maybe he'll make life better for us.

Our people have gotten sicker and weaker over the past week. Some have already lost mind. I think I may be one of them.

Dog's come....take people.....kill....itchy...tasty.....want to kill......

..........*blood streaks*

KILL!

What the hell?! Hunter thought.

"Guys I found something!" Hunter shouted.

The others came back over and Exile asked "What?"

"Read this..." Hunter offered with a cringed look on his face.

The others began to read with wide eyes at the disturbing entry; Keith was the first to speak.

"Looks like Parvo is trying to achieve genocide of the hu man race. We were right."

"We have to stop him no matter what!" Exile said with anger.

"Has Parvo really gotten this powerful? How the hell did this get past our surveillance?" Blitz asked.

"I think Parvo might have some help on this one. From what you've told me, he's not all that calculating and clever, even with the groomer's help." Keith chimed in.

"From who? Tricell?" Hunter asked.

"Maybe, but we won't know until we get closer to our goal. We're wasting time, let's go." Keith replied, using a hand motion for "move out"

The Rover's nodded and crept up to the second floor, revealing a room with various tribal furniture and torches.

"Looks like the Chief's quarters, well was anyway....." Blitz commented.

To the right was an opening leading to the grassy path to the elevator. The started walking to the opening down the path, watching for anymore of the tribal dogs.

"It's strangely quiet, that's always the case. Not only are we stuck in Indiana Jones, were stuck in a monster movie." Exile laughed.

The others laughed at the husky's remark and eventually found their way to the elevator.

"For a tribal race, this is pretty advanced." Hunter commented while pulling the switch.

The elevator pulled upward pretty quickly despite its primitive design, giving the Rovers a great view of the swamp.

"Despite how much danger we've been through, we've seen some pretty sweet places." Hunter commented, putting his arm around Keith.

"Yeah, what's more I've been able to see them with you....." Keith replied, licking Hunter's hair tuft.

"Aww you're such a softie....." Hunter replied with a smile.

Hunter and Keith just leaned into each other. Blitz and Exile just smiled to each other and did the same, enjoying a brief respite with their respective partner. The elevator came to a stop and revealed an area between two gray rocky cliffs filled with leaves and various plants. The path seemed to continue on to where smoke was rising in the distance.

"Why would there be an oil field here?" Exile asked, stepping off the elevator.

"These people don't look like they've even stepped out of the primitive age."

"No clue, but if we continue on I'm sure we'll find out." Blitz commented.

The team pushed through the brush and various plants for about twenty yards, revealing what seemed to be a small campsite with square tents all over it. Kind of like a scientist's camp from a movie. They looked around and discovered what they were looking for....a Tricell logo on one of the tents.

"Looks like you were right Keith. By the looks of things though, there hasn't been anyone here for weeks!" Exile commented, kicking over a box near where the fire pit was.

"We won't find any clues here either. The tents are devoid of anything but tables and beds." Blitz commented, searching through the tents.

"Why would Tricell want to give Parvo such a dangerous weapon to begin with? I mean they wouldn't just destroy themselves with their own technology right?" Hunter asked.

"No, there's something else going on here. I don't know what, but I think we'll find out the deeper we go." Keith commented with his arms crossed.

"The oil field is just up ahead let's go!" The Rovers ran on ahead to find a huge oil mining facility with smoke rising in the air. There were huge red doors in the front leading inside and the Rover's took their positions to go in. Keith nodded and they all rushed in with their guns pointed and ready. The facility was just a bunch of metal platforms and pumps and machinery all winded together on different levels. It seemed rather empty though. All of the Rovers proceeded forward and dropped off the ledge into the lower level underneath all the platforms, only to be greeted by foreign voices again. Seven of the regular clothing clad dogs came out of the woodworks from a split in the path ahead, wielding wrenches and makeshift weapons.

BAM! BAM!

The Rovers opened fire and made head shots, taking down a few of the beasts. The remainder ran forward at the speed of light and attempted to tackle the Rovers, but were taken down quickly by their sharpshooting skills.

"Push through! Let's find a way out of here!" Keith ordered, signaling with his right hand.

"Which way?" Hunter asked.

"Left! GO!" Keith shouted.

They finished off the remaining dogs and took the left path and climbed the ladder to the top level, revealing a metal platform that lead across to the exit. Just as they climbed up, eight more of the dogs jumped out and rushed the Rovers.

"Our ammo is gonna be eaten up at this rate!" Exile said, switching to his rifle.

"Stick to melee then. We gotta conserve as much as we can!" Keith barked, holstering his handgun and taking out his knife.

"Perfect! My favorite!" Exile laughed, cracking his knuckles.

Blitz unsheathed his claws and smiled evilly while Hunter got his knife out. The Rovers ran forward and began a throw down with their assailants. Exile hooked one in the face and caused the poor dog to fall off the platform below. Blitz tore through one and it's blood went everywhere in the process. Hunter round housed two of them away and impaled them both in the stomach as a follow up.

"Heh this is sort of fun! I....UGH!" Exile shouted being smacked in the face by a wrench.

Exile clutched his face and his eyes glowed red. He lasered his assailant in two and panted heavily.

"You okay?" Blitz asked.

"Yeah!" Exile replied.

Come on guys run!" Keith ordered.

The entire group ran for the door and pushed it open, Exile wielding it shut with his vision.

"Whew....where are we?" Hunter breathed, shaking himself.

"Outside....and I can hear...water? Docks maybe?" Keith replied.

The group ran up the stairs and were on a platform overlooking two concrete docks spread out by about 40 feet. One of them had a yaht with their mysterious figure from before on it.

"It's him!" Blitz proclaimed, running forward.

"Wait Blitz! We should come up with a plan first...." Hunter said, grabbing his shoulder.

BOOM! AN explosion rang out from the facility.

"No time! Let's go!" Keith ordered.

The dogs ran to the gate leading to the dock down the ramp and ran at top speed to the boat.

They all hopped on board and as soon as they did the boat took off into the lake. A glorious explosion of red and orange engulfed the facility behind them, causing the boat to shake.

"*pant pant* Where are we going?" Hunter said, picking himself up.

"I don't know but.....look!" Exile proclaimed, pointing his weapon.

The battle suit clad dog was looking at them through his mirrored helmet, silent.

"Who the hell are you?! Why do you....?" Keith started.

The dog dropped a tape recorder and in a brilliant flash of light vanished.

"Well he's not much of a talker....." Hunter chuckled.

Keith picked up the tape and hit play, the groomer's voice coming up.

"Hello Rovers. Welcome aboard and congratulations for surviving. This boat is on a trip to an island where our facility is, but it'll be about 20 hours before you get there.

Please enjoy my hospitality on the boat before you get here. It might be your last time to relax. Hahaha.......just note there might be a surprise in store. I'll give you one last warning, there is nothing here wasting your lives over. *click*"

"Wow she's nasty, but strangely nice." Blitz commented.

"Hospitality? The food is probably poisoned or something or the boat might explode." Exile scoffed. "I dunno, she sounded pretty sincere. Besides there are crueler ways to kill us." Keith said.

"Maybe you're right. Let's go take a look around." Hunter said, walking towards the front.

As they were walking, Keith sensed something. He looked out into the ocean with a hard look, but shook it off. There was something out there.......something big.
