#9 of You Can't Hide It Forever

And after a long pause, a new development!

I'm getting towards the end of the story. I'm not entirely pleased of how it's turning out but I have a duty to finish it.

I woke up to the warm sun in my eyes. I blinked and turned my head to get my eyes out of the sunlight. It streamed through the cracks of the blinds, casting warm stripes over my jeans and my bare chest fur. Cassandra had fallen asleep with her head on my chest, breathing softly as she snoozed. I smiled and set my head back down on the pillow, enjoying the warmth of the sun and the feeling of her shirt against my chest. In the past, I have spent more time chest-naked this week than I have in the last few years. It felt... strange. Risky, but so good. Free. I closed my eyes and let her head rise and fall as I breathed, just gently enjoying her company. I scratched at my chest. Cassandra let out a short huff, then sighed softly.

"Did I wake you?" I asked, brushing my fingers through her short chopped hair. Cassandra shifted a little, snuggling closer to my chest.

"Mm... maybe..." she replied. I chuckled and kissed the top of her head.

"Heh, sorry."

"No no, I don't mind..." She gave my chest a little kiss, which made my heart flutter. "I love how... fluffy you are..." I blushed.

"Erm... well I am a German Shepherd..." I replied. She gave out a light sigh and playfully batted my chest.

The door burst open. Cassandra and I gasped. We both shot up into a sitting position, her arm still around my chest. Gerald stood in the doorway, wearing khakis and a polo shirt. He looked at the two of us. We looked at each other. I blushed hard and suddenly I felt cold. I only felt colder as Cassandra realized what it looked like and broke away, scowling at Gerald.

"Get dressed and get out." Gerald said. I'm not sure if he was just being directive or angry, but I could sense the urgency in his voice.

"Uh, excuse me?" Cassandra folded her arms across her chest. Gerald ignored her and walked over to me.

"Dispatch got a report of car making repeated passes. The chief called me. Then they got another call of somebody trying to get over my back fence."

"What?" I felt my fur bristle and my throat tighten a little, wanting to instinctively growl.

"The police are on their way, but you need to get out now, before there's a scene."

"Where are we going to go?" asked Cassandra.

"I don't know." Gerald handed me a slip of paper. "This is my number. Call me when you're safe. But you need to leave now."

I nodded and leaped up from the bed. I grabbed my shirt and began to put it on. In the mirror, I could see Gerald catch a glimpse of my scar. I felt so cold and exposed. I quickly shoved the shirt down to cover my body, then grabbed my hoodie. I put the slip of paper into the pocket and zipped it up.

I cautiously opened the door and looked both ways. Nobody, except an elderly poodle of a neighbour on a porch. I briskly walked to my Charger and unlocked the doors. Cassandra got in and looked around nervously as I checked the undercarriage for anything that could be an explosive. Nothing. I sat in the driver's seat and closed the door.

"Shouldn't we be driving something else?" asked Cassandra.

"Like what?" I asked, turning the key and bringing the engine to life.

"Oh I don't know... look, this thing is so easy to identify. Maybe we should rent one?" she suggested. I huffed.

"And leave a paper trail? No thanks." I backed out of the driveway, checking my blind spots. I decided to go south, backing up onto the road and driving towards the freeway. I passed and alley, and I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. I looked in the passenger side mirror to see a the distinctive triangular grille of a Mazda. It was a Mazda 6, a dark grey.

"...David..." Cassandra turned around to look at it.

"Oh shit!" I slammed on the gas. The engine roared and the entire car seemed to squat as it took off with a small squeak of the rear tires. The Mazda was close behind. "Dammit get my phone and call Gerald!" I raised my right arm to allow her to get into my pocket. She grabbed my phone and the slip of paper and began dialing. A turn was approaching. I braked and threw the car around the corner. The nose dove but dug in to the inside line of the corner, causing Cassandra to slam against the side of the door and window with a clunk.

"FUCK!" she screamed, grabbing the side of her head. "Ah fucking..." He looked back to the phone and kept dialing.

Just like the last time, I was in the midst of a cornering heaven. My Charger could manage, but it wasn't designed for this. The Mazda - on the other hand - lived for it. Very underrated cars in my opinion, but now was not the time... I heard a crunch as their bumper tapped mine, almost causing my back end to break loose.

"Fuckers!" I gritted my teeth. As soon as we approached a strait spot, I slammed on the brakes. Cassandra braced herself as the Mazda slammed into my rear bumper. Both her and I were jolted pretty bad, but I sped off and leaving the deformed bumper of the Mazda behind.

"Gerald!" I heard Cassandra say. I looked over at her. She was on the phone. "No we're not fucking safe! We're being chased!" I let my tires squeal a little around the next corner to articulate her point.

"Speed bump!" I warned.

"What?" There was a massive B-BAM as my suspension took the bump. The nose of the Charger dove right after hitting it, causing the rear end to rise into the air as the back wheels hit the bump. There was a bit of a crunch when I landed, but I kept going, my back end slipping a little from side to side as the tires struggle to regain their traction. "AGH! What? No no, we didn't hit anything! Just a bump!"

The Mazda was keeping up. The ground we made on the straits was lost in the corners. I did a left turn followed by a quick right turn, but I couldn't shake him. The Mazda was good, and the driver was better.

"Head to Mathias Avenue!" She suddenly yelled.

"What?'

"LEFT!"

I braked hard and yanked the wheel to the left. My back tires squealed with displeasure and slid a bit as I ended up on the larger road, which had lots of traffic. I weaved through the cars. None of them seemed too happy. Lots of honking and middle fingers. The Mazda followed close behind.

"Why the fuck am I going this way?" I asked Cassandra.

"They've got cops ahead!"

She said that as soon as I saw the two black and white Crown Vics blocking my path, officers standing with their guns drawn. I slammed on my brakes, and the two of us were slammed against the front of the cabin as my tires squealed and slid. As soon as we were stopped, I grabbed Cassandra and ducked down below the dash in case gunfire was involved. I heard more screeching tires and yelling. The officers passed my car completely and stormed the Mazda, throwing open the doors and arresting those inside. Somebody tapped on my window. It was another officer. I breathed a sigh of relief and looked to Cassandra. She was shaking. I put my hand on her shoulder. She swatted it away. She stormed out of the car, holding her head.

"Cassandra? Cassandra!"

"Leave me alone!" She yelled, storming away.

"Cassandra please..." I put my hand on her shoulder again. She whirled around and shoved me away.

"I told you to leave me alone!" Her eyes were full of tears. "I don't want you near me anymore!"

"What?"

"Nowhere is safe with you! I'm looking over my shoulder all the time and now I almost got killed again! What the hell am I supposed to do?"

I looked at her with pleading eyes as the officer looked on. "Please..." was all I could say to her. She turned away from me.

She walked away.
