#3 of Life's Changes

Gahhhh this was a tough one, everyone's still getting into the flow of things but bit by bit we're getting the hang of it... I hope anyway haha. Shout out to Keith and Destiny for their input on this chapter and helping lead ups to future chapters. Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy it!

I sat there is silence trying my best to stay awake, failing I might add. Study hall was my final class of the day and I hated it. A whole period where you do nothing but study? Granted most furs took advantage of it, I had dedicated to make it more of a nap time. I felt myself drifting further into sleep only to jolt back up as I felt something hit my chair. I brought my head up and wiped away some drool from my muzzle as Zach snickered pointing towards the clock. Looking up at it I realized it was almost time to go. I gave a silent yawn and stretched trying to wake myself up. Grabbing my bag I bobbed my head with the second hand on the clock as it ticked away, counting down in my head until the first bell would ring. Being seniors, that first bell was our ticket to freedom, and with a loud high pitched echo it rang through out the halls. Zach and I jumped up and were the first ones gone, and rushed out the door. Quickly throwing our bags into our lockers we headed for the front door. "So what's the plan for today?" I cocked my head towards Zach giving him a sarcastic bored look. He looked back at me like I was crazy, "same thing we do everyday. Try to take over the world!!" He threw his paws up with a victorious grin flashing across his face. I laughed and gave him a light shove, "yeah, cause your plans for world domination always work." He face turned more serious as he looked at me, "hey come on, that burrito cannon was a genus idea." It was my turn to look at him like he was insane, "yeah, for taco Tuesday world domination." We continued to laugh as we reached the outside world, was still rather warm. It being only mid September, the trees turned to their fall colors and leaves danced in the wind creating a see of reds and yellows in the streets. "But seriously what are we doing today?" He looked up at me as I unlocked my car, "probably drop my sister off at home then go to the park. What else are we gonna do?" I shrugged. Living in a small town had its perks every now and then but there wasn't really anything ever going on, so we mainly hung out at the park. He nodded "alright, I'm gonna head home probably change clothes and eat real quick." "Okay, see ya there in a few." I waved him off as he pulled out and headed down the road. I stated my car and turned on some music while I waited for my sister. Scrolling through my playlist I stopped on Raising Hell by Bullet For My Valentine, I smirked and chuckled to see Logan head banging to the song as he and Daron walked over. While Logan seemed his usual cheery self, Daron looked like something was bothering him. Looking down, quieter than usual and a small slump in his walk. "Yo you alright man?" I asked trying to look him in the eye. "Y- yeah, I- I'm good." I gave him a concerned look before turning to Logan, "alright man, just checking. You guys gonna be at the park later?" "Yeah, Ima drop by home real quick then we'll be there." Logan replied. "Cool see ya there, and hey. Cheer up man." Giving Daron a quick pat on the back as they walked away.

I got in my car as I saw Faith and Brittany walking over, Faith was unusually quiet too, but she also hadn't been feeling good all day. "Hey friend," Brittany said hugging me through the door window. "What's up friend," returning the hug, "park later?" "Yeah, I'll be there a little later. I gotta help my brother move some stuff first though." I nodded, "oh yeah that's right, you said he was moving back to town sometime soon." She lay her ears back and spoke in a dull sarcastic tone, "yup that'd be today." We both laughed and I nodded, "try not to take all day." I hollered back as she started to walk away, I turned to my sister who was slumped in the passenger seat, "you feeling okay?" She didn't look up, "yeah, I just wanna go home and lay down." I patted her head between her ears, "alright I'll run ya home real quick." I was concerned about her but figured it was her just not feeling the best, we turned down the road and my gaze found the younger fox walking down the sidewalk. It'd been a month since he moved here but he remained distant, not really taking much, and avoiding people when ever he could. Me included, any time I tried to approach him he'd quickly dodge off. He had seen me staring and I gave him a small smile and wave as we passed by but he just looked back towards the ground and kept walking. I felt bad for him, what kind of past did he have that made him so secluded? I gave a slight frown and continued up the street, pondering to myself as we pulled into the driveway. Faith grabbed her bag, got out, and headed for the front door. Poking my head out the window "feel better sis, let me know if you need anything." I called out, she just waved back as she made he way inside. I was worried about her, she seemed off, not like sick, but more like something was bothering her too. Had something happened between her and Daron? Their relationship was a little shaky. They hadn't been dating very long, and seemed like they disagreed on a lot of things. I sat there for a while as I thought to myself. Maybe they had an argument or something. I shrugged it off and I slowly backed out of the drive way. Pawing through gears I slowly made my way down the road, noticing the fox walking up the street. He looked up as I drove past, my heart pounded as we made eye contact. His eyes were a bright metallic silver with light grey streaks. This was first time he'd made eye contact with me this close up. A light blushed grew on his face as he looked back down as we passed on another. I smiled faintly as I continued down the road. I'd run into him and get a chance to talk to him sooner or later. Hopefully soon than later though.

I pulled up to the park to see Logan and Daron already sitting at one of the picnic tables chatting away. Darons mood had seemed to improve, he was at least smiling and laughing for now. As I walked over Logan threw his paws up and flashed me a confused look. "The hell took you so long? We walked here and still got here faster than you." I rolled my eyes and chuckled, "got held up that's all." He narrowed his eyes at me "you're a terrible lair." I put my paw on his face and gave a light shove, "better than you mister twitchy ears." He had a little ear tick when ever he lied, he was pretty good at hiding it from his parents though. He pushed my paw off his face and pointed at my tail, "at least I have better control over my ears than you have with your tail." I looked back and noticed my tail was still wagging and twitching slightly. Blushing I grabbed it trying to make it stop. "Whatever, you got me on that one." I turn towards Daron and sat next to him wrapping an arm around him. "You're looking better than you did a little while ago." He nodded and kinda looked down. "What's wrong man?" He just shrugged and whispered, "your sister broke up with me." I took my arm off him and bared my teeth a little. "What'd you do to her?" I demanded, his ears quickly laid back and his tail tucked a bit. "Nothing I swear! At least nothing that she wouldn't tell me. You'd have to ask her." I pulled my phone out and sent her a quick text asking what had happened. Her only reply was "I don't wanna talk about it right now." I became lost in thought and was quickly interrupted as Zach rolled up, Walk by Pantera blaring from his car speakers. Once he parked he hoped out giving a quick air guitar solo along with the song. We all laughed as he walked over and I pointed to the shirt he had changed into, a white Pantera cut off t-shirt. "You know I'm gonna steal that one day right?" He looked down and back up at me, "the hell you are! Go get your own." I shook my head, "nope nope nope. I want that one." He gave me a good shoulder bump as he sat down at the table. quickly joining in on the conversation. Him and Logan talking about something that had happened at school earlier, I wasn't in the same class as them so I had missed it, and wasn't to interested in hearing about it. I turn to Daron and started talking with him, trying to figure out what had happened between him and my sister. His hadn't the slightest clue on why she broke up with him, he looked a little down, but he was at least taking it well. We continued to talk, trying to make him feel better until Zach slammed his paw on the table and began pointing franticly toward the parking lot. Stuttering over his words, "d- d- dude!" His muzzle hung open and I looked to see what he was pointing at. There, pulling up next to our cars, a '68 Ford Mustang, its bright red paint gleamed in the sun light. The car had obvious been restored and built very well. Its low rumble echoed as the engine died down.

We all stared in awe as Brittany hoped out of the passenger seat, smiling brightly, with a small skip in her walk as she made her way over to us. Out of the drivers side came out larger dragon, his scales a deep blue with traces of silver as they reflected in the sun. His broad frame was well defined with an athletic muscular tone. The way he walked showed he knew how big he was. His stern expression showed he didn't take much interested in meeting us all. We all remained quiet until Brittany broke the silence, "hey guys, this is Keith. My older brother." I glance back and forth between them with a puzzled look and slowly raising an eye brow. "Uh- brother?" I said shyly. "Well, step brother I guess." I nodded and gave Keith a wary look, "oh okay, well what's up man?" I said extending my paw. He didn't show any sign of shaking my paw, only turning to Brittany. "So these are the pups you hang around with?" His voice was low and distilled. "Yup, that's Krys, Logan, Zach, and Daron." She barked happily pointing to each of us as she called our names. We all shared the same nervous smile as Keith looked to each of us with a sight scowl, showing a hint of his fangs. He huffed as he gave Brittany a hug and started back towards his car. "I'll be back to pick you up later." He called back giving a small wave, before getting into his car, and bringing it to life. "Okay, see ya later. Thanks for the ride." He nodded in response before turning down the road and gunning it. Its low rumble grew loud and echoed through out the surrounding buildings. I turned back to Britt with a more wide eyed surprise look, "well he seems, erm, nice." She laughed and sat at the table to join us. "He's really nice once you get to know him." Logan piped his ears up and raised his eye brows, "if he doesn't kill us first." She glanced at him with a smug smile, "he's not that mean!" I shrugged and put my paws up a little, "I don't know his expression had the look of "I'll kill you and not think twice about it," but if you say so." We all laughed and she gently smacked my muzzle. "Hey! Be nice, he'll come around eventually." We all shared a worried glance at one another before switching the topic to something less awkward. Zach being the first one to pop up "at least he's smart enough to drive a Mustang and not some foreign thing," flashing a smirk my way. I laughed flipping him off and kicking him with my hind paw under the table. We all laughed again before getting lost in conversation.

It was right around 9 P.M. or so when Logan's phone went off, quickly answering the text, and placing the phone back in his pocket he sighed. "Damnit, I gotta head home. Zach can ya give me a ride?" Zach glance down at his phone checking the time, "yeah, I forgot I need to get some stuff done around the house anyway so I should probably head out too." They both got up and I gave them both a light paw bump, "alright see you guys at school tomorrow." Zach waved and Logan threw up a piece sign before getting in Zach's car and driving off. Shortly after the bell rang at the pool caddy corner from the park and other furs slowly made their way out. I glanced up then went back to texting on my phone. "What time to you need to be home Daron?" I perked my ear in his direction waiting for a response. After a few second of no reply I turned to him, "helloooo." He was staring toward the pool muzzle hung open slightly before snapping back at me knocking on his head with my paw. "Welcome back." I chuckled, he gave a shy smile, "sorry heh, I was lost there for a minute." He voice drifted as he went back to staring at the other furs leaving the pool. I turned and scanned the direction he was staring in, "what are you staring at anyway?" His tone was soft and sigh like, "her" nodding toward a white tiger leaning against the entrance smiling and thanking furs as they left. I recognized her from a few of my classes. "You mean Destiny?" He nodded slowly eyes fixated on her. Her fur a snow white with thin defined purple lines fading from front to back down her sides. She had an older style punk look, two piercings on her left eye brow, snake bites, and small gauges near the base of her ears. Her body defiantly grown more famine than most other girls in our school, while still retaining an athletic tone. I looked back to Daron who was captivated by her sight, "why don't you go talk to her?" His ears laid down and he quickly blushed as he looked down and away. "Are you kidding no way! I'd look like an idiot compared to her." As he looked away I looked back to her as she noticed him staring then blush away, she smiled softly before turning back to the other furs she was with. A glanced back at Daron flashing him a sly smile, a thought quickly forming in my head.

Brittany and I shared a look and both laughed while Daron sunk and continued to stare. We then heard Keith's car come rumbling into the parking lot, Britt got up and gave me a hug. "See ya tomorrow Krys." I returned the hug and smiled, "yup see ya then." She tried to give Daron a hug but he was too lost in thought. She chuckled and just ruffled the fur on the top of his head before heading up to her brother's car. I waved as she got in, Keith just shooting me the same stern look from before and then took off. I shrugged it off before standing and grabbing Daron, "come on lovey puppy we gotta get you home. I don't wanna get yelled at for you being late again." He came back to reality and shook it off, "oh right, yeah sorry bout that." Forcing a soft laugh, I chuckled with him, "I'm not worried about it, I just like messing with ya is all." We laughed more as we got in my car, firing up the engine and turning on In Like Flynn by The Bunny The Bear, one of Darons favorite songs. We cruised up the main road, he living a bit further away than everyone else. Making a few turns down different side streets we finally rolled up to his house, we said our goodbyes as he hoped out and started walking toward his home. I pulled away from the curb and started my way home, taking side streets the whole way, I slowly coasted down the way. Cemetery Gates by Pantera playing at a lower volume from my stereo. Windows down I let the cool fall breeze blow through my fur. I slowly pulled into the driveway and killed the engine leaving the stereo on to finish out the song.

The song faded out and I rolled up the windows and got out locking the doors. I walked in the front door and made my way to the garage area, my mom and step dad were out there have a drink or two talking about their day and other odd and end stuff. Todd noticed me first, "speaking of which there he is." My mom smiled as she looked up at me, setting her phone down on the bar. "I was just about to text you to let you know you its time to come home." I brought my paws up to my head and twiddled my fingers, "yeah, I'm physic like that." The three of us laughed as I sat down and we started to converse. Talking about our days and some future plans that were still up in the air. Checking the time I mentioned I should probably head for bed giving a fake yawn as I got up, walking to my mom and giving her a hug and telling her goodnight. She hugged me back and I made my way to Todd, who stopped me after I gave him a hug. "Real quick, I don't want to get your hopes up, but might be able to get some more parts for your car." Confused I raised and eye brow. "One of the houses we're adding on to has an old Prelude hiding in the back. I don't think it runs but I gave it a quick peak and I'm pretty sure its got plenty of good parts still on it." A bright smile grew over my face, "that's awesome! If I need to come work and help out to get it just let me know." He patted my back and assured me he would let me know. I turned to head inside telling them goodnight and that I was going to sleep; But that was a lie.

I entered my room and shut the door before approaching my window. Quietly sliding it open, I stopped and listened to make sure no one heard me. With out hearing anything I carefully hoped out and shut it, leaving it cracked so it wouldn't relock. My parents knew I snuck out every now and then, the only time they really cared was when I did it on school nights. There being school tomorrow I knew they'd be a little irritated if they caught me. I quietly pawed my way up the street to the next alleyway over, the layout of the town made it really easy to get from one end of town to the other using the darker alleyways to hide from headlights. Didn't want to get caught by the police again. I started my way down the dark alleys heading north. Towards the edge of town there was a smaller forested area with a descent sized fishing pond. My favorite spot in town was deep in the forest. Back hidden in the brush there was a rather odd, smaller, abandoned building. Being deep enough in the forest no one really knew about it unless you actually walked in there.

Enjoying my walk I slowed and inhaled a deep breath with a long sigh. I don't know why but I'd always loved the calm quiet night. It was quiet and bliss, really gave you a chance to stop and think to yourself. I picked up my pace and stopped short, my ears perking up. Foot steps; I turned to see who or what was there behind me but couldn't see anything through the blanket of darkness. Giving a good couple of sniffs in the air I couldn't smell anything either. Must be my imagination I thought as I continued my way. Still glancing back every now and then, I began to grow more attentive, still hearing sounds coming from behind me. I quickened my pace more. Only for the sounds to quicken as well. I knew the town well, I knew once I got a few more blocks I could duck left and dip between two buildings and take cover on the next block over. The next alley over had a set of house, that in the dark looked connected, but if you knew where to go you could slip between them. I made my move and hauled through to the next block, quickly scrounging through the house and emerging on the other side. Smirking and laughing slyly to myself I continued to jog on not hearing the foot steps any more. Not catching me on my own turf I whispered quietly.

Upon reaching the pond there was a small field separating the last street and the tree line. I dodged between trees here and there, slowly making my way to the edge of the tree line. Stopping and remaining in the shadows any time a car went by on the main road. Finally my chance came up to make it to the tree line, I quickly bound for it. Diving into the trees, panting slightly, I wiped the little bit of sweat from the fur on my head with my paw. Weaving through the trees I came up to the building. It was a small two roomed brick building, two doors, and three narrow but tall broken windows. Some friends and I had found it while out here messing around on day, thinking it'd be a nice hang out spot, we decided to fix it up a little. Got the windows covered, replaced the doors, and brought some old chairs and a table to it. Nice little place to go and get away when we had nowhere else to go. Some of us had even stayed the night out here before. I leaned up against the side and looked up to see the clear night sky, stars shining bright across the sea of night. Smiling contently to myself I slid my phone from my pocket, opening up the Spotify app, I scrolled to my oldies playlist and turning on Peace of Mind by Boston. Sure I enjoyed my metal, alt rock, EDM, and techno; Every once in a while I like to go back to the classics. You know Led Zeppelin, Pink, Floyd, Eagles, and Blue Oyster Cult. Older music that just really spoke to me, calmed me down.

I eventually brought one of the chairs and sat down closing my eyes and letting my self go. Getting lost in my own thoughts, humming softly to myself. I peaked an eye open as I was disturbed by a twig snapping. Looking up and scanning the area, "could be one of my friends" I thought. "No. They would have sent a text or something first." I checked my phone, no new messages, I got up and shut the music off. Crouching closer to the ground I swiftly made my way over to the rustling with was getting closer. Being sure to be as light on my hind paws as I carefully circled around where the noises where coming from. Graciously approaching, I saw a hooded figure looking this way and that. Looked lost more than anything, even heard what sounded like whimpering. Pondering for a few moments before leaving the brush and walking up to the figure. I got a few steps away from it and let out a soft cough to give attention to my presence. "Ahem, hey. You lost or something?" With a loud yelp the figure spun around and fell back. I quickly apologized, smiled and reached and paw down. Freezing as the hood fell from his head. It was him. There sitting in front of me, the young fox, blushing brightly with mixes of surprise, nervousness, and fear, staring up at me.

My heart skipped a beat as his expression calmed, giving me a shy smile, and reached for my still extended paw. I helped him up and he brushed all the twigs and leafs from his clothes and tail. He forced a shaky laugh and thanked me. "Well, I was kind of the reason you fell in the first place." I chuckled softly. "Yeah, but I was the one that was lost out in the woods." He spoke softly and shifted awkwardly on his hind legs. "Right, what were you doing out here anyway?" I asked my expression turning more intrigued. He blushed again and looked away, "I, uh, um." My ears perked and raised an eye brow. "Followed you out here." A shocked and rather curious expression came across my face but before I could speak he continued. "I saw you walking through town earlier, it was the first time I'd ever seen you walking alone so I tried to follow you and catch up to you but I was scared and nervous so I keep my distance. When I did build up the courage to try and talk to you, you quickly disappeared." I laughed softly, "oh, that was you? I'm sorry haha, but then how'd you end up out here?" His stance straightened out "I found you again while you were running from shadow to shadow in the clearing by the pond." I slowly nodded, "oh that makes sense, kind of have to take your time at that part." He let out a small laugh "yeah it took me a lot longer to get across than you." I shrugged and laughed a little harder "years of practice I guess." He joined my laughter and we continued to talk for a little while more.

Eventually I pulled out my phone to check the time and saw it was almost 3 in the morning, "oh damn it got late, we should probably head back. Should be a little bit more dead by now though." He smiled and nodded as I led him back to the small path through the trees, reaching the clearing there was no signs of any cars so we were able to walk it without too much hiding. We talked more as we continued to walk through the alleyways, he was a little shy, but as we talked more and more he began to open up a little more. I couldn't believe how much we had in common, from music to movies, thoughts on life, even the same love for night. We'd both blush when we talked about things we liked, even getting a little flirty. Eventually I handed him my phone and let him put his number in and I couldn't help but get excited. Obviously he felt the same, our tails waging franticly. Alas, we finally reached his house and we started to say goodbye to one another, telling him I'd see him at school tomorrow. Just before he turned to go in I called to him, "oh yeah, I'm Krys by the way." He smiled and turned back to give me a hug, "nice to meet you, I'm Nate." His voice soft and sweet, I nearly melted into the hug as I wrapped my arms around him. He sighed contently into the hug and he nuzzled into my chest. We slowly broke apart and waved as he went inside, him smiling brightly and waving back as he shut the door.

My smile never left my face as I finished my walk home. A little skip in each step I took, my thoughts had finally calmed, things finally making sense and seeming better. I crawled in my window and flopped on my bed, still smiling like an idiot to myself. I hadn't put much thought into it but after this night, finally getting to meet him and talk to him. I couldn't believe it, I was... In love with him... Nate... All I could think about was him, that time we spent walking together was spectacular. I hadn't had a feeling like this in a long time. I rolled in my bed getting comfortable as my thoughts circled around him as I slowly drifted off to sleep. I couldn't wait to see him tomorrow.
