With a red glow on his scales from hovering over the lava pool, Yamizephyr was high up in the sky, every miniscule detail in his view. Dark, ominous clouds hid the stars and moon in the sky, making the place darker then normal. Xenorosth assumed it was a spell Yamizephyr used to give himself the advantage. After all, he did control the shadows.

The scared hatchling tried to hide, but was too late. Yamizephyr teleported right in front of Xenorosth, startling him. He flew backwards a few yards in reaction. It did not take long for Xenorosth to realize that Yamizephyr was using the shadows not only as a weapon for anyone who was foolish enough to try to attack him, but also for teleporting and increasing his speed in battle.

"You actually had the nerve not to hide! I am impressed!" Yamizephyr mocked. Xenorosth growled and teleported to the other side of the lava bed. He hoped that would have been enough to keep him confused enough to give him time to find a spot to hide, but somehow he teleported right behind him almost simultaneously. Xenorosth yipped, panicked.

"Leave me alone!" Xenorosth whimpered quietly. The hatchlings cries made Yamizephyr laugh with an edge that sent chills through Xenorosth. He flew away from Yamizephyr, who was easily able to dash in front and cut him off. Xenorosth nearly crashed into his father. He was able to slow himself down quick enough to stop right out of reach of his father.

"Come on now! I just want to talk a little." Yamizephyr rumbled, landing right in front of the lava pool, "Why don't you come down here? Then we can discuss... matters. I call temporary truce!"

Xenorosth blinked in shock. A truce? Xenorosth tried to flee, not wanting to negotiate, but he realized that found he couldn't move. Not even his wings were moving! Xenorosth growled and looked down at them. They were slowly being devoured by a shadow. He looked at his other appendages and found that they were too being paralyzed. It looked like he was going to be forced to comply. Xenorosth gulped and nodded to Yamizephyr.

Yamizephyr grinned, his sharp teeth glowing red from the near-by lava. Xenorosth tried to land, but the shadows wouldn't let him. He whined pleadingly a little.

"So it seems you are well are you not? Recovered from that shadow lightning?" Yamizephyr asked as if he were trying to be polite.

"Uh... I am... recovered yes." Xenorosth informed quietly. "And you?"

"I am okay. Your last escape has angered many of my people you realize. Next time you are caught there will be very little chance of you to escape. And perhaps they might want to ‘play' with you a little before you are turned over."

"Why are you telling me that?"

Yamizephyr was amused with this question. "To let you know where you stand with my people. I feel that it would be necessary information. And who knows. It might convince you to come willingly. I'd hate to drag you to my lair with these shadows. I always did find it fun to tease prey."

Xenorosth blinked and tried to struggle even more. He whimpered and shook, starting calling out to anyone who could help. He knew that no one would be able to help him. Even if someone would dare to come, they too would only be trapped in the shadows as well.

"Scream all you want hatchling. I have you now! Your mother can't save you. No one can!" Yamizephyr chuckled. He took the very tip of his black tail and started coaxingly stroking Xenorosth's side making sure not to let his tail leave the hatchling's scales. Xenorosth shivered. He looked around for something to give him the advantage, but there was only the lava pool behind him.

Lava pools? That gave Xenorosth an idea! He closed his eyes and as he pictured the lava pools in his mind. Then he teleported right to the edge of the pool, just deep enough that he couldn't stand. Yamizephyr was teleported over as well and his tail touched the lava. He hissed and jumped back in surprise, splashing Xenorosth.

This made the hatchling feel better. What also he noticed is that the shadows were also melting away. He could move again! He dived in deeper while Yamizephyr was still distracted from his newly acquired burns. He opened the door to the exit of his mind and tried to contact Flare. There were too many dragons' minds to distinguish Flare's out. He snorted frustrated. He tried opening his eyes under the lava, half expecting them to burn.

When he opened them there was an endless field of red, orange, and yellow. What surprised him more was the fact that there were other creatures besides dragons in there. There were eel-like creatures and swimming around at the rocky bottom of the pool. It was a very beautiful scene. What Xenorosth also noticed was in the center, there seemed to be a hole. Xenorosth swam towards the center to see the giant hole. It looked deep. He then found a large slow moving bubble come up from the hole. Xenorosth tried swallowing it and surprisingly enough it was enough for Xenorosth to take a nice breath. He continued down into the hole continuing to catch the bubbles floating up to the surface.

All of the sudden a fire dragon came out of the hole. He almost yipped in excitement, but quickly reminded himself that he was in lava. The dragon swam up to him and grabbed Xenorosth. Xenorosth didn't protest, just glad that he was away from his father. He closed his eyes as the dragon dragged him deeper into the hole. He relaxed and dozed off, thinking everything would be okay.

Xenorosth squirmed a little. He let out a long yawn and stretched. He heard murmurs of many dragons around him talking. It caught his attention, but he didn't want to wake up. Then he heard his name being called out. He ignored it and rolled on his side, keeping his eyes shut tight. Then he felt himself being nudged lightly. He pawed at whatever was disturbed. Then he felt himself being picked up and tossed. He felt himself land in a pool of lava. He panicked and sputtered, finally opening his eyes.

"Hey! I was sleepi..." Xenorosth started angrily, but his words were cut off as he realized that Flare and a large number of dragons were watching him. Everyone went silent as he awakened. He yipped and crawled out of the lava and over to Flare, still dazed from his short slumber.

Flare came over to him and stroked his side with his spiky red tail. Xenorosth sighed pleasantly.

"Where is father? Is he still out there waiting for me to come back out?" Xenorosth asked. At this everyone started whispering to each other again. Flare hesitated.

"He is out there, and he is not happy that you escaped again. He has threatened to imprison anyone that he finds, and if that doesn't draw you out he plans to get fighters to capture us all and take control of the our home." He informed quietly. Xenorosth stood there in horror. He had to get out of here for everyone's sake.

"If that is the case, then I am leaving to establish my own territory and find the next place I should go. As the dark guardian I will not stay and put everyone in danger!" Xenorosth announced to everyone holding his head up high. It sent gasps throughout the crowd of the now distraught crowd. Xenorosth looked at Flare. He was just as awed as everyone else.

"Flare it was nice meeting you, but it looks like it is time for us to part ways." Xenorosth sighed. He then flew up and over the crowd and went over to one of the private pools.

"Wait! Xenorosth!" Flare shouted and chased after the hatchling. Everyone moved out of his way so he could catch up. When Flare caught up he saw Xenorosth standing alone by a private pool. The hatchling took note for a moment then looked away and down at the pool. The hatchling cast his mind, trying to feel if there was a way from here to the main pool. There was.

"Xenorosth I am coming!" Flare stated. He was trying to be firm, but his voice was still a little shaky from the sudden announcement. Xenorosth stood there for a second. Then he looked back at Flare.

"You aren't making this easy for me. Please I really think this should be done alone. I must make sure he sees me fleeing. Please stay here. I don't want you captured." Xenorosth replied. The edge of frustration in his voice made Flare blink, but he continued.

"I am willing to take that risk."

"Well I am not."

"Just give me a chance!"

"No!" Xenorosth was getting irritable at this point. So was Flare. He wrapped his tail around Xenorosth's arm and tightly squeezed it. Xenorosth yipped and bit it as hard as he could. He saw Flare wince in pain, but that only made him squeeze tighter.

"I'm not going to let you go alone! I'm just not going to!" Flare rumbled. Xenorosth sighed. He knew he couldn't overpower the larger dragon. He grumbled irascibly. He then closed his eyes. Flare was about to nose him, but all the sudden he found the rocky lava pool gone. He yipped in surprised. The sudden drop in temperature surprised Flare enough that he let go of Xenorosth. He took the opportunity to go back and out of his reach. Flare looked around curiously, not paying attention to the fact Xenorosth had was freed from his grip.

"Where are we?" He asked Xenorosth.

"My mother's lair," Xenorosth replied quickly, then added the orders "Stay here if you must come with me. I must do this for your people. I will not let my father enslave them. Okay?"

Flare thought about it. He knew he couldn't talk Xenorosth out of it. He sighed and nodded. "If you must. But please hurry!" Flare pleaded. Xenorosth nodded. He teleported back over in front of the firelock. Yamizephyr had left in search of him once more. He must have been flying low; he wasn't right about him again. It gave him some time with his nerve. He only had to be seen for a split second before he could vanish once more. But it was still risky.

Xenorosth took a deep breath, and then flew up into the air, not too high. He wanted to look like he was trying to escape. He started searching the skies for a black flying figure. For some reason though, he couldn't find it. He decided to land on the edge of a mountain.

Instantly, he felt a claw pull him backwards. He tripped over whatever pulled him and before he could recover he saw a little black dragon, which seemed to be almost the same size as him, pin him to the ground with a soft growl. Xenorosth snarled back loudly. That seemed to panic the small dragon. She shushed him, helped him up, and ushered him to a small cavern, only 8 feet tall and 5 feet wide. However, it seemed to very long. Did it go through the entire mountain? Then all sudden after walking a while, the black dragon turned around clawed him in the head.

"Ouch! What was that for?" Xenorosth snapped.

"What in the name of darkness do you think you are doing? And that was for be such an idiot!" The black dragon snorted angrily, turning around to face him. Xenorosth gave a small rumble in surprise.

It was a girl! She was about a half foot taller then Xenorosth. She had a nice glow in her green eyes. Her white horns were perfectly polished, her black scales shined like the ponds at home. It matched her large wings beautifully. The pointy spines on her back and tail as well as her sharp claws. Xenorosth couldn't help but think she was very cute.

" A girl!" Xenorosth exclaimed, surprised. She should her head at the immaturity of the reaction. She muttered something that Xenorosth couldn't hear.

"Yes... a girl. The name is Darkwing. Yes, I am a hatchling. Now please answer my question. What are you doing here? You should be at home with your mother!" She roared angrily.

Xenorosth quickly defended himself. " I am not going to put mother in danger. I left to keep her safe from Yamizephyr's invasion. And you? Why have you left from your realm, Darkwing? Should you not be at your lair with your father and mother?"

The small dragoness looked away and suddenly got quiet. "They are dead. The last thing they did was put an age stop spell on me. I'm not going to grow any bigger then this. Judging by your size you probably have one too."

Xenorosth gasped and slowly nuzzled Darkwing "I am so sorry. I didn't know."

"It's okay." She replied, "Its not your fault. You need to get out of here."

"But I have to let Yamizephyr see me teleport. Otherwise, he will enslave these innocent dragons thinking I'm hiding in a little hole."

"I will take care of that. I will tell him you teleported off. Now just go!" Darkwing ordered.

With that Xenorosth was content. He nodded turning around preparing to depart when Darkwing cried out again.

"Wait! Hold a sec." Xenorosth rolled his eyes. Xenorosth turned around, but before he could say anything Darkwing gave him a sweet kiss on his cheek. She quickly backed off, a little embarrassed, but still smiling. Xenorosth couldn't find the words on how he felt. He never had been kissed before. He stood unsure of how to respond.

"We will see each other again. Now you can go." Darkwing said softly. Xenorosth hardly heard her. He was in a daze from the sudden kiss. He closed his eyes, trying to get the image to teleport, but the image of Darkwing kept popping up in his head, making it difficult. Eventually, he finally stopped thinking about her enough that manage to teleport back to safety.

After he was gone, Darkwing shook her head.

"Why in the world did I do that? I have some nerve!" She asked herself.
