Chapter 2

Say Uncle

January 26, 1891

Monday, Arrived at the first stop, Shreveport Louisiana. It was a long ride, no where near as comfortable as a riverboat but still better than a stagecoach. My next train doesn't leave until tomorrow morning and they were handling my luggage, so I had the afternoon to look around. Not a bad town, folks are friendly and the entertainment is decent. I met my first Indian today, young girl of the Caddo tribe. She spoke a bit of English, though I can't begin to pronounce her name, so I'll just call her Banit. That was about the only part of her name I can say. She said it translates as Bird which is fitting for a Blue Jay. Banit was a kind girl, selling Indian trinkets she made. I saw some beads and other things that I'm sure Lilly could decorate with so I bought a few and had them mailed back to her. I left Banit and wandered around and found a restaurant and ate dinner and went for a walk. Then I saw something that absolutely disgusted me. There was a ruckus over by a general store. I headed over there to see what was going on only to see Banit, on the ground being stomped on by a hog. He was claiming that the money she had was stolen, the money I had paid her with. He stomped and beat her and no one was stopping him. So I did. I ran up and hit him as hard as I could. Just about broke my hand. He fell over and looked up at me flabbergasted that anyone would protect an Indian. I told him I gave her the money, that it wasn't stolen. He got up as quickly as he could and pulled a knife on me. I pulled my pistol and put the barrel right between his eyes. Damn coward wet himself and ran off. The old man that runs the store said that she came in wanting to buy some food when the hog saw her. He groped her and tried to rape her when she kicked him in the groin. That's when he started beating her. The old man was glad that I stopped him and gave me the food that she purchased. I took her to the restaurant to get her something hot to eat but she wouldn't go in. Apparently they don't serve Indians there. So I walked in and bought a meal and brought it out for her. The owners got mad and tried to take the food away. A swift kick to the gut fixed that. While she was eating I spoke to Banit. She wanted to try to become "civilized" and so she came to the nearest city to try and earn a living. Civilized... Beh! If how they were treating her is civilized then I'd rather be a Savage. I told her that she'd never get anywhere in that town, that she'd have better luck in New Orleans. I bought her a ticket for the first train back. Her train leaves an hour before mine so I told her to stay with me and I'll get her on that train. She thanked me profusely, tears in her eyes. As I'm writing this, Banit is in the bath. I'm sitting outside the door guarding it. A few people didn't care to have an Indian in the same building as them. Worthless scum, can do without the likes of them. While waiting on Banit to finish her bath I wrote a letter for her to give to Ma. In it I asked Ma to take care of her until I returned. I also drew a map to The Pasture. Guess I'm making this a habit. Save a girl, send her to Ma. I'll write again tomorrow once we've boarded our trains

January 27, 1891

Banit sleeps warm. No, I didn't "sleep" with her. There was just one bed in the room. We shared it. She may be pretty but she's still a bit young for me. This morning I got her on the correct train. She knew the conductor and he was happy to see that she was leaving for a better town. I asked him to make sure she got there safely. I then gave her the letter and map and told her to find Ma at The Greener Pasture saloon and give her the letter. She hugged me goodbye and boarded the train. I waited until it was out of sight before turning to face the people that were waiting for me. That hog had come back with a couple of friends. He was looking for revenge for my making him look like a fool. We squared off right there on the platform. I, being the smart-ass that I am, couldn't resist teasing him more. I told him "Maybe you should go to the latrine before we start...don't worry, I can wait. We don't want to have another accident like we did yesterday, do we?" That got him furious and he started waving his pistol around cussing my very existence. While he was distracted, I shot him and his two friends in the arm making them drop their guns. They squealed in pain and ran off, one leaving a trail of urine as he went.

I was able to board my train and leave without further incident. The rest of the day was fairly quiet. Another passenger and I played cards quite a bit. This trip was going to be a bit longer. Again I had a sleeper cabin, but I had to share it this time. Nice young family. A man, George, his wife, Lucy, and their baby John. Well mannered infant. Hardly made a fuss except for when he needed something. They were on their way to Dallas. George was going to be a lawyer there. He gave me a business card. I think I'll hang on to it. I just might need a good lawyer some time. They're asleep now. I think I'll give them the room and sleep in the main passenger car.

January 29, 1891

I made it to Ft. Worth without further incident. We arrived just before noon. I got a room at a nearby hotel, cleaned up, and headed out to see the area. Mostly what I saw today was that this is mainly a cattle town. The stockyards here are very large, and I found a couple of places that look like I'd have some fun with cards. It was nice getting to stretch my legs and not be rattled constantly. Something I noticed is that there are a lot more reptiles here than on the river. Almost stepped on a rattlesnake's tail...body...whatever you call it. Boy was he mad! And fast too. I apologized and he calmed down and put his sawed off shotgun away. I'm going to have to be more careful here. After a good long walk I called it a night and headed back to my room.

January 30, 1891

Today I started investigating my past. I thought the first thing I should do is talk with the local police. I was able to speak with a detective that had been on the force for a couple of decades. I asked him if he knew anything about an otter family missing a son or anything of the sort about twenty years ago. He said that there's only been a handful of otters come through Ft. Worth but they never stuck around long, and didn't remember anything about a missing otter boy. He did say that he recalled hearing about an otter family that lived to the northwest close to the Red River about that time, but that was all he could remember. But that's something and that's more than what I had. After looking at a regional map the biggest town in that area is Wichita Falls. I'll head there and see what I can find out. I went by the train station and got a ticket on the Burlington Northern & Santa Fe train for tomorrow. They said it's about a five hour ride, train leaves at 6am. I left the station and visited with some newspapers and the library. I couldn't find any records about any other otter families or news about this one. I left, got a drink at the hotel bar and went to bed.

January 31, 1891

I'm in Wichita Falls today. It's quite a bit smaller than Ft. Worth but still large enough to have a police force and not just a sheriff. Again I spoke to a detective but according to him the otter family that I heard of was still there, but they were much too young to be my parents. He didn't know of any other otters in the area. He gave me their address though and I'm going to talk with them. It's been a long time since I've spoken to another otter. The detective wished me luck and apologized for not knowing more. I thanked him and left to find the otters. I found the house, and knocked on the door. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous. A middle aged man answered. He was about my height but a bit thinner. He looked to be about 45 maybe 50. I introduced myself, his name is Oswald Able. I told Mr. Able about myself and that I was trying to find out if I had any family. He told me that his parents had moved here from England, and so he had no other family here, but that there were no other otters in the area as far as he can remember. His wife said the same. She moved here after meeting Oswald at college. Dead end... or so I thought. Mr. Able said that his father might know something. He was away for college at the time but his father was here and might know something. Mr. Able took me upstairs to his father. He was bedridden and not long for this world, but still sharp-witted. We spoke for a while he said that about 25 years ago he got a visit from a young otter family, a man, wife and small boy. He said I could be the boy. According to him the family was moving northeast of town almost on the river. That was dangerous land as it was near the Indian Territory of Oklahoma and that Indians often crossed the river. The Caddo and Wichita tribes were friendly but the Comanche were dangerous. He told me that the family had made a decent farm and were on good terms with both the tribes and the town but something happened. The Comanche were blamed but they always denied having anything to do with it. He said that the family just disappeared. Everything was left there, clothes drying on the clothesline and food in the pantry. The horses, wagons, and everything were left. It was as if they simply vanished. I was able to get directions to where the farm was, I thanked them and left. I don't know what to think about that. I asked some of the other local elderly about it and got pretty much the same story. Tomorrow I'm getting a horse and riding out there.

February 1, 1891

I got a horse from the livery and headed out to where the old man said the farm should be. I didn't find anything, not even ruins. I turned back. I'll try again tomorrow.

February 2, 1891

I gathered enough supplies for me and the horse to last us a couple of days out there. Again I left and returned to where the house was supposed to be. I've searched all day but I haven't found anything. I've made camp and will be staying out here tonight.

February 3, 1891

Searched and searched and searched. I can't seem to find anything to suggest that anyone's ever been here. Maybe the old man has gone senile and I didn't see it. Maybe he just sent me on a wild goose chase. I'll be out here for one more day. I'll go back to town tomorrow and talk with him again.

February 4, 1891

I didn't find anything today either. I spoke to the old man about it again, but he was adamant that I was searching in the right place. What am I going to do? I thanked him and returned to the hotel. I knew this wouldn't be easy but surely there would be some evidence that there once was a house there.

February 5, 1891

I spoke to the detective again today. He seemed sorry that I wasn't able to find anything. I asked him if it was possible for me to speak with the Comanche. He didn't think that was a good idea but it is possible. He gave me a map and told me where I could find them. It would be a few days ride so I needed to pack heavy. I left and made arraignments for a horse, a pack mule, and enough supplies for a five day trip. I'll ride the horse and the mule will carry our things. I'll leave tomorrow.

I wrote a letter to Ma and the kids. I apologized for dumping yet another person on Ma, and that I was doing alright. I also told her of what I've learned so far. I also asked her how they're all doing. I'd like to hear back from them. The hotel manager said that he'd gladly accept any mail for me and forward it if needed. That's good.

February 6, 1891

I'm riding off early this morning in search of the Comanche tribe. I should be there either late tomorrow or early Sunday.

February 7, 1891

My butt hurts. I'm not used to riding all day. Trail is difficult, may not get there tomorrow morning.

February 8, 1891

I found them. It's a bit late in the afternoon but I found them. I don't want to ride down now, that might anger them. I'll head down at first light.

February 9, 1891

Well, I'm alive. They didn't kill me, so I guess that means I'll live. I tried talking with a few of them but they won't talk. I was told that I can speak to the tribe elder once he returns tomorrow. They're a bit wary of me but they are treating me and my pack animals well. Their food is interesting, simple but good. A few of the women like my ties. I traded a couple of them off and they were happy about that. One really liked the blue one that Lilly gave me. It was hard to explain that I can't trade that one. She was a bit upset about it. I think I'd better keep it close.

February 10, 1891

I made it through another night. Someone decided that my horse and saddle needed decorating but that's all that happened. They've been very respectful of me. They're not at all like what I was told. The elder returned at some point last night and called me in to speak with him about noon. After a few rituals to purify me, we sat and talked. He was impressive. An old mountain lion, under the old skin I could see what remained of the past warrior. I told him of why I came. He misunderstood me. He thought that I was again blaming them for the family's disappearance. It was hard to explain that I just wanted to know what happened. I was just about at wits end when I told him that I think I was the boy of the missing family. He looked me in the eye. It was as if he was looking into my very soul. He told me that they did attack the family once, to try and scare them away from their land. He said that a few days after the raid one of the tribe's children fell from his horse and broke his arm. That despite their earlier raid the man took the child and mended his arm. That the woman fed and bathed him, and later they returned him to the tribe. The tribe considered them friends after that and they would often spend time together. He said that after the family disappeared that the entire tribe searched for them for months, but that they never found anything of them. He apologized and said that I could be the boy, but that I may never find out what happened. I thanked him. I suppose that I may never discover what happened in my past.

February 13, 1891

Ughh....My butt hurts. I made it back to town and I spoke with the old man about what the Comanche had to say. He couldn't tell me anymore either. I'm going to head back to Ft. Worth on Monday. I bought a ticket for the 16th. Today though, I'm enjoying a nice hot bath.

February 14, 1891

A letter arrived for me. I could tell Ma was a bit upset. Not that I sent another girl though. Apparently, Ma suggested to Banit that she should take a bath, afterwards though she walked around the house naked in front of Bobby and Will. Ha! I could just imagine the look on all their faces. Here's a quote from the letter:

"Yer not gonna believe me, but that damn native girl ya sent home just strolled thru the house naked as the day she was born like it was natural. Didn't nobody ever teach this girl manners? She came in an sat next Bobby and Will with not so much as a shred of cloth on her. Just what am I gonna do with her? Dammit Flint! I blame you fer this!"

Ha ha ha! I wish I was there, just to see the expressions. I can almost see them now, Bobby and Will's eyes popping out of their head, Ma coming unglued. Oh, that would have been great! Ma said that Banit is trying her best to be helpful, but she tends to make a bigger mess than what she started with. Apparently Lilly has stepped forward and has been trying to show Banit what to do. Ma says that Banit's been asking about me quite a lot, almost like she's love struck. Uh oh. Ma said something interesting, she said that Banit saw a picture of me, pointed to it and said something like "Ah-ah emay", but she couldn't say it in English. I'll ask around and see if anyone knows something.

But despite their best efforts she's been drawing a lot of attention. Some of it isn't good. Ma asked me to come back soon. She's never done that before. I'll go back as soon as I can.

February 15, 1891

I tried to get my ticket changed to today. I wasn't able to. I'll have to wait until tomorrow to get to Ft. Worth. Damn. So instead I sent a telegram to Ma saying that I'm coming back as fast as I can. Her reply was simple...hurry. Now I'm really worried. What's going on? I couldn't sit still today and wandered around a lot. I couldn't even enjoy a meal or a drink because of it. As such I was busy as hell and didn't get a damn thing done.

February 16, 1891

Finally back to Ft. Worth. I've got the next train to New Orleans. I've spent the money to get the fastest route. It'll still take three days though. Damn!

February 19, 1891

I made it back today and was greeted at the station by everyone. Ma didn't hug me the way she normally does. The kids were ecstatic to see me, especially Lilly. Banit was there and stood with Ma. She looked worried as well. After returning home Ma, Banit and I sat down to talk. Ma said that some nasty people have been hanging around, people that are quick to anger and eager to use their guns. They showed up just after Banit arrived and have been following her around. Ma's description of them reminded me of the men that were beating Banit. If it is them, then they are more cowardly than I imagined. They want to get back at me but are going after my family instead. I'm not going to let them. I asked around the usual places to see if any strange hogs had shown up but nobody's seen them. It appears that they're somewhat smarter than the usual thugs. I hunted for them all day but only heard mention of three boars that got off the Shreveport train a couple of weeks ago. While searching I stopped by the police station and talked with them. I told them of the trouble and asked for their help. All I got was that they'll assign more patrols around Ma's house and the saloon, but that they couldn't help much more than that due to their limited numbers. I understand but I'm not happy about it. Tomorrow is Lilly's show I'll hide in The Pasture and wait for any trouble to start.

Ma gave Banit my bedroom. Guess I'm sleeping on the couch now on.

February 20, 1891

Banit and I walked the kids to school today. I'm going to keep Banit close and guard her and the kids. I spoke to Mr. Harcourt and told him of the trouble. He's seen them and now I'm fairly confident that they're the hogs from Shreveport. I asked Mr. Harcourt to keep an eye out for them and to let me know if he sees's them again. He offered to watch Lilly and Bobby if needed and said he'll help anyway that he can. I can't ask him for much, he's not at all a fighter and neither is Jr., but I can count on them to watch out for the kids. I also introduced Banit to him and told him of her situation. He shook his head and laughed, "Always have to protect the pretty girls don't we Flint". I got a good laugh out of that as well. Seems we agree I've got a problem.

While searching for the thugs, I was able to talk with Banit, somewhat. She indeed calls me "Ah-ah-emay". I haven't the slightest clue as to what that means. I'll try to figure that out later. I took her out to lunch at a restaurant nearby. That's when I saw that she does draw a lot of attention. I'm rather used to people looking at me, so I didn't notice until I left for the washroom. I heard all kinds of comments mostly they were talking of how pretty her feathers are and wondering if she really is an Indian. I really didn't hear many negative things, so I guess that's good. Regardless it is an improvement over what she was going through. We got our food and I discovered something else. Banit's table manners are...how do I say it politely...nonexistent. Once this mess is cleared up I'll work with her and teach her some basic manners. We did some more looking around but didn't see anything else.

I'm at The Pasture right now in the upstairs office. Banit is with me; apparently this is her first time in a Saloon. She looked around a bit before it got busy. She liked the piano. Lilly and Ms. Fellows will be performing tonight so that usually draws a crowd. I've asked Banit to watch for the "bad men" as well. I think it went in one ear and out the other. She can't seem to sit still, playing with this and that asking the names of everything she sees. I sat on the floor next to the door so that I can see the main room without being seen myself. Banit took that to mean "Come cuddle with me". She's sat down between my legs and wrapped herself around me. She keeps saying that "ah-ah emay" thing. I asked her about it. Her best explanation was "Daddy's" and a hand sign like she was moving a small box to the side. I gave her a pencil and paper and asked her to draw it. From what I gather it means Uncle, I think. Just about the time we got it figured out Ms. Fellows started playing and Lilly took the stage. Banit looked confused at first, but was awestruck when Lilly started singing. There's no misunderstanding that look. Banit fell asleep in my arms like that at some point. I didn't notice as I was looking for the thugs. I didn't see them. I wonder where they are. Ma didn't see them either. Maybe they spotted me and left? I'll stick around and find out.

After the show I left Banit sitting in Ma's chair in the office and when down on the floor to help Lilly get upstairs to change. That's when I saw one of them out on the street. I started to run after him but it almost looked like he wanted me to chase him. Instead I ran up to the roof and followed him that way. Good thing too, he brought more people this time. He ran down an alley and I saw about 8 boars in there. As far away as I was I could still smell them. I heard a sound behind me and I drew my gun and turned only to see Banit there with a rifle. She gave it to me repeating Ma. I guess Ma told her to give it to me. But if I shot from there that'd be murder, I don't want that. I need to get them separated, even though I could have taken care of it all right then and there. It would have been easy, like shooting fish in a barrel. That's it! That's what I'm going to do. I'm going fishing. They've spotted me and they know that they don't stand a chance unless they surprise me. But if I give them some bait maybe I can get them to come at me one on one or at least in much fewer numbers.

February 21, 1891

I woke up this morning in a bit of a predicament. I was warm and comfortable on the couch, regardless of the weight on top of me. Ma and Lilly were standing over me with rather angry expressions on their faces. What's the cause of all this? There's a certain blue bird that had crept up under my blanket and joined me last night. Oh, but it didn't end there. About that time Banit woke up and sat on my stomach, wearing nothing but one of my old shirts. It didn't help that I wasn't wearing a shirt so it looked a lot worse than it was. I looked at Lilly and Ma and asked "Now are you going to believe what I tell you? Or what you see?" They chose what they saw, and I've got a couple of lumps on my head now. I was wearing pants the entire time. Ughh...

Ma dragged Banit off and scolded her. Banit looked about as confused as a person could possibly be. Lilly stormed off, sulking. After all the "festivities" Bobby came down stairs asking about breakfast. Lilly shot him the worst go-to-hell look I've ever seen. I apologized to Bobby and volunteered to make breakfast, waffles for everyone and bacon for Banit and I. Lilly was grumpy for the rest of the day. Ma is a bit used to it. It was after noon before I was able to explain everything. But more importantly, I've come up with a plan to deal with those hogs.

My initial plan is to stick to the rooftops with my rifle and have Banit walk the streets. She's sure to draw attention. If it's the hogs, I can shoot them with the rifle. Anyone else I'll just stomp. I'm sure that'd work on one or two of them, possibly scare a few off. From there I'll use myself as bait. I'll get "drunk" and wander into a secluded alley. If I need to I'll just shoot it out and hope for the best. First things first though, I need to get a guard for The Pasture.

I took Banit to the police station. I told her that if there's ever any trouble and I'm not around to go there. Well my exact words were "Here, good men. If bad men come, you run here. They help. Yes?" I think she understood. While at the station I spoke with the Chief. I asked if it would be possible to hire an officer to stand watch at The Pasture for Friday and Saturday. He said it'd be up to the officer but that he'd allow it. I managed to hire a new officer, a young goat by the name of Luke Papel. I'd say he was about 20 years old. This is to be his first assignment and he looked eager. I then led Papel to The Pasture and showed him around. I said that I'd pay for anything he ate and drank so long as he didn't have any alcohol. He agreed and said that he'd return that evening. That done it was time to go fishing. I asked Banit to take a walk and to stay on the main street. I took to the roofs. It wasn't long before she was confronted. Three of the hogs came including one from the train station. They immediately attacked. I shot and killed two of them and wounded the third. He staggered off. I told Banit to run to Ma and stay. I followed the wounded one. I wanted to see where he went. After a while I saw him enter a low rent hotel. I waited a bit before I followed him. The front desk clerk wasn't happy the hog had left a blood trail leading right up to their room. I followed the trail and found out what room they were in. Third floor and it sounded like there were a lot of them inside. I couldn't go through the door, I'd get myself killed. Instead I climbed up the fire escape as quietly as I could. I found their room and sure enough there were five more inside, but not bladderboy. I reloaded my rifle and untied my pistols. That's when the shooting started. I emptied my rifle into them, dropped it and drew both pistols. I made sure not to hit the one I wounded earlier, I needed him. I wasn't so lucky. I took a bullet to my left side. Damn that hurt! Luckily the bullet passed though and didn't hit anything vital. While I reloaded bladderboy bolted out of the room across the hall and ran. I really needed to get him. I chased as best I could but I lost him. I went back to the room only to find that the one I left alive had picked up a gun. I beat him to the draw and killed him. I left in pursuit of bladderboy. But I couldn't find him.

I went back to The Pasture and staggered through the door. I smiled and said I got eight of them before my legs gave out. I woke up a couple days later at home.

February 25, 1891

I feel like shit warmed over. Doc did a good job patching me up. He said a few inches up or to my right and I wouldn't have had to worry about it. Lilly and Banit have been nursing me. Honestly it's a bit annoying being taken care of, but I'll let them. Ma hasn't said anything yet. I'll see her from time to time walk past my room. She'll look in then huff and walk off. I know what she's thinking. She's mad that I got into trouble again, worried about my injury, happy that I'm alright, and pissed that I didn't get all of them. I fully agree with her. According to the clock it's a bit past noon and I'm getting hungry. I feel as though I haven't eaten in a couple of days...

Lilly and Banit brought in lunch while I was writing that. Those girls have good timing. Ma made chicken soup for me. Banit held the bowl while Lilly fed me. I think a fellow could get used to this. Bobby came in and we talked a bit. He told me that a couple of policemen have come around wanting to talk to me. He said that Ma has chased them off every time. He left and I got some rest before Ma brought in dinner. It seems like I just ate. Ma told me that things have gotten back to normal but she's worried about the one that got away. He was the one starting trouble and it's possible that he'll comeback with a vengeance. I told her that I'll get him and not to worry. We spoke for a while then she changed my bandages. First time I've seen the wound. Doc is quite the seamstress. If this doctoring thing doesn't work out he could certainly be a tailor, or a barber, he shaved my fur. It's gonna be months before it grows back! Beh!

February 26, 1891

I'm going to burn in hell. I woke up this morning feeling a bit crowded and overly warm. Under my right arm was Banit, under my left was Lilly. Ma came in early to wake me and saw us. I gave her a look trying to ask for help. She laughed and closed the door. I didn't know what I was going to do. I really needed to use the lavatory. They didn't wake for another two hours.

Everyone's been guarding my room. Since today is Ma's day off that includes her. I'm not allowed out except to use the washroom. Ma said that she and Banit are going to bathe me today. I guess I'm not allowed to do that either. Goodbye dignity, I hardly knew ye. Again I was fed lunch by Banit and Lilly, I'm not going to complain about that, to be honest I kind of enjoy it. I got a good laugh out of Banit after lunch. She was taking the dishes back to the kitchen when she tripped and fell flat on her face, her butt in the air. She tried to play it off but ended up walking into a wall and falling onto her butt. Ha ha ha! I didn't know I was getting dinner and a show! Lilly said that she's a bit clumsy at times. Oh well, She's trying. I can't give her a hard time for that. The rest of the day was rather quiet. Joey came in and visited for a while as did Mr. Harcourt. Mr. Harcourt brought by a couple of dime novels for me. At least I'll have something to read while on house arrest I mean, while I'm recovering. A bit after dark Ma and Banit came in. Ma had on her apron and a small wash tub in her hands. Banit was wearing a skirt and one of my old shirts; she had a wash cloth and a bar of soap in her hands. It was bath time. I objected saying that I can bathe myself but Ma twisted my ear and said she's going to do it. She undressed me and had Banit hold me in a sitting position. Ma gave me a sponge bath regardless of my grumbles and complaints. Banit was behind me and giggled. She washed everything except for my nether regions. I wouldn't let her do that. She tossed me the wash cloth and left saying that if I got the bed wet that I'm just going to have to sleep in it. Jeez...I can't get an ounce of sympathy out of her. Ma left and sharply closed the door. Banit took it to mean that the rest was up to her. She was more than willing to "wash" me down there. I tried to tell her as nicely as I could that I'd clean myself. She stood up and turned her back to me. I thought that she'd given up. I was wrong. I turned to get the washcloth, when I looked back Banit was standing there, naked. It wasn't hard to figure out what she wanted. I tried to stop her but I was still weak from the wound. Things were going her way until she bumped my wound. I winced in pain and she stopped. She realized that she couldn't do that while I'm injured. Thank God! Not that it helped, I was still left in a fairly awkward position. Banit took care of that with her hands and tongue. By the way, beaks do not feel good, but feathers are great. I let her finish "bathing" me and she left. I thought I was done. Again, I was wrong. I could hear that everyone had gone to bed. A bit later I heard Ma's snoring. I had settled down and was trying to go to sleep when Banit came in again. She pulled the sheets down and cuddled up to me. Both of us were naked. She put her leg across mine and moved my hand down to stomach. I looked her in the eye and she said "I help you," she rubbed my sheath, "dah-hung'-cah-hay, you help me" and she smiled. Damn it. Fairs fair, right? She's asking for help, right? What could I do? She moaned here and there, each the time I worried that someone would hear her. Her hands wandered around before they found what they were searching for. She pulled and tugged. She rolled onto her side and backed up to me, rubbing me between her butt cheeks. I wanted nothing more than to take her then and there but I couldn't. It wasn't long before she bit onto my arm and let out a long soft moan. I couldn't take it anymore and I made a mess on her tail feathers. She left and cleaned herself up. When she finished she cuddled up to me and said "hawweh" which, I think, is either thanks or good night, and fell asleep. That caused yet another predicament, but I was able to remedy that. After I was sure she was sleeping, I slipped out and got a shirt and underwear for us. I was somehow able to dress Banit while she was asleep. I crawled back in and slept the rest of the night with her.

February 27, 1891

We woke early and were dressed before Ma and Lilly came in. I was finally allowed to go downstairs. We had a quiet morning before all of us walked the kids to school. Banit was interested and kept asking "What is". I tried explaining that it was a place to learn. That was when I had an idea. We were struggling to teach Banit English, but an actual teacher might have an easier time of it. I talked to Ma about it and she agreed, but whom? We made our way over to The Pasture and talked for a while when Joey, who lives upstairs, overheard us and volunteered. I've been told that Joey is a good teacher. But getting an airhead and a klutz together? That could be dangerous, but it's better than what we've been doing. Behind the office is the apartment that Ma and Pa lived in before they had a house. We cleaned it out and converted it into a makeshift classroom. We told Banit that Joey would teach her good English. Her eyes lit up and she hugged us. That afternoon Banit and I went by the school, both to walk the kids home, but also to talk with the teachers. I asked if they had a spare chalk board that we could borrow, but they didn't. However they said that Mr. Harcourt might be able to get me one. That was our next stop. Lilly and Bobby joined us, both to help and because Mr. Harcourt spoils them with candy. I spoke to Mr. Harcourt about what we wanted to do and about getting a chalk board. He, in his typical fashion, said "I can't order one for you", He paused, "But your welcome to use mine." I was going to ask him why he has one but I thought that it'd be better if I didn't. He then did the damndest thing, he closed shop and had Jr. help him carry it to The Pasture. Mr. Harcourt must be the most generous man on Earth. We got it there and while we were setting up Jr. left. I thought that he had something to do. But he soon returned with some basic school books, chalk, and writing supplies. This makeshift classroom is almost better stocked than the school. Ma and I carried up a small table and a couple of chairs. Joey told us that she'd be more than willing to teach Banit on her days off. She usually takes Monday through Wednesday off. That works out great for us. We agreed on three hours a day. That shouldn't be too much for Banit or Joey. We chatted for a bit more before Banit and I left. Ma still wanted me to take it easy.

Papel the policeman I hired came back as we were leaving. He wanted to know if he was still needed. I asked him to stick around until I healed. He's a good kid I think he'll be a good cop as well. Banit and I ate dinner at a small restaurant and returned home. She did her best to clean the house and make herself useful. But every so often she'd trip and end up on her face. If nothing else she's good entertainment. Later on Papel walked Lilly home. He said that he loves her singing. I thanked him for walking her home and after a long day we finally could call it a night.

February 28, 1891

It's Saturday and I'm getting cabin fever. I told Ma that I was going out for a while. She objected but made me take Banit with me. I didn't have any plans I just wanted to get out of the house for a while, having a bit of company is just fine by me. I dressed and off we went. We took a short turn around the block when I noticed that Banit kept eyeing everyone's dresses. She was still dressed in her Caddo clothing. She needs something else to wear. So I took her to see Mrs. Young. I asked her to make another simple dress for Banit. Mrs. Young had a hard time measuring Banit. Banit kept fidgeting and playing with her tools, but she managed to get the measurements and I repeated "a very simple dress". Banit's constant "What is?" was getting a bit tiresome. I then took her to a cobbler and bought some shoes for her. I think she started to understand. Banit looked at me like she wanted to ask me a question, she pointed to Mrs. Young then to a woman's dress and then to herself. I nodded and said "Mrs. Young make dress for Banit." She got excited and hugged me a bit too hard. She was so excited about her dress that she didn't look before turning around and walked into a post. I caught her before she hit the ground though. We spent the rest of the day lazing about in the park. We returned home in time to see Lilly and Ma off. Bobby and Will were going to stay with us tonight for a change. Will, Bobby and Banit spent the evening drawing pictures. Bobby's were great as always. Papel again walked Lilly home. He said that he brought a few of his police buddies over to watch. They all loved it and are looking forward to the next show. That is fine by me. Means more business for Ma and means The Pasture should be that much safer.

March 1, 1891

Today was a strange day. The preacher was actually nice to me. That scared me. Being the first of the month we had the usual potluck after church, and all the elderly women came to serve me food. I ate until I felt like I was going to explode. The young men followed Banit around making her mad. Then they got mad at me when she came up and wrapped my arm around her. I heard one call me a dirty old man. I'm not old! I'm only thirty and I'm not that dirty. Lilly didn't help when she saw Banit with my arm around her. She came up and snuggled up on the other side of me giving Banit challenging looks. Ughh...I'm in trouble. Ma was no help either. I kept looking to her for help and she'd just laugh. Before long a small tug of war broke out between Lilly and Banit with me as the rope. But it didn't end there. No that would be too easy. Joey thought that it'd be fun to join in as well and started pulling my shoulders. I don't mind the attention but at least don't rip my arms off. That got old fast and I stood up and walked off. Lilly asked were I was going. I said "To hide" She looked confused. I smile and said "From y'all" and I ran off a quickly as I could. It wasn't long before Banit found me with Lilly and Joey in tow. She may be a girl but she's still a skilled tracker. I spent the rest of the luncheon on the move the girls on my heels. The older women would laugh every time they saw me. And that's pretty much how the rest of the day went. If I sat on the couch Banit and Lilly sat on the couch. I went to the park, the girls followed. Mr. Harcourt's, the library, everywhere I went they were soon there. I gave in after dinner. We ended up on the couch, Lilly brushing the fur on my head chatting about this and that, Banit cleaning my nails. Ma was getting a kick out of this. Bobby didn't understand what the fuss was about. I'll explain it to him someday. Only peace I got was in the washroom, even then Banit tried to follow me in. As I write this Banit and Lilly are changing into their sleepwear and I'd bet 10 to 1 that they'll join me. At least if Lilly is there Banit won't try anything.

Post Script: I win. Ugh...

March 2, 1891

After this weekend's "fun" I was almost glad for it to be Monday. Lilly and Bobby were off to school. Banit went to The Pasture for lessons from Joey. It was finally a quiet day. Ma woke about noon and I had a chance to talk with her privately. I asked her if it was alright that I sent Banit here. Her response, "They'll be no more of that! Ya hear? Iffin ya wanted a squaw that's fine jes don' put her off on me." I said "No no no! I didn't want a squaw. I just couldn't let her stay there and get beaten and killed!" Ma laughed "Wonder how she'd feel knowin' that she's yer pet bird?" Ma was pulling my leg. We laughed and laughed. She's right though, I've always been the type to bring home injured animals and nurse them back to health. She was fine with it as Banit is good with outdoor chores such as chopping wood and she helps Lilly with the laundry. Chopping wood? Ma lets that klutz have an axe? I checked the chopping block and the axe but there was no blood, the wood was cleanly cut as well. Hmm... Maybe she's not as much of a walking disaster as I thought, or so I was thinking. Banit came home a couple of hours later and tripped over her feet three times before she made it to the living room. Ma lets her chop wood? She wanted to show me what she learned. In one day she's learned her ABC's and some basic greetings. That afternoon I helped Lilly with her homework, and worked with Banit on her English and manners. It seems things have gotten back to normal.

March 3, 1891

Papel came by today, he said that those pigs I killed a week ago were all wanted and had a sizable bounty on them. He came to deliver it. For the eight I killed I got $12,000. I've never seen that much money before! He also said that they have identified the one that got away and he's worth $2,000 by himself. I was stunned. I asked how that coward got such a large bounty, and Papel gave me the wanted poster, multiple murders. I knew how I was going to earn my living for a while. I'm going on a pig hunt! I need to end this anyways. Papel asked how Banit was doing. He was doing his level best to hide his interest. I said "She's doing well she's learning English at a "friend's" house." I didn't want him to know that she's at The Pasture. He was disappointed. I can't blame him; even I've fallen prey to her charm. He left looking like a kid whose mother won't let him play. Oh Lord, help us. After he left, I locked up the house and deposited the bounty in the bank. I left a bit out for me to play on. While I was out I asked around to see if anyone has seen the one I'm calling Bladderboy. No one has seen him even at the hotel. Not that I was welcomed there. I checked the train station and the ticket master said that Bladderboy bought a ticket to Shreveport. I guess I'm going back. I'll do that next week though. I want to heal up a bit more. The rest of the day was fairly quiet.

March 4, 1891

Doc says my wound has sealed and that I can take a bath normally again. I'm so glad. It was embarrassing to let Ma bathe me and Banit gets a bit...amorous. Not much happened today. Oh, Will came by and told me that the dress his mother's making will be ready tomorrow. That's great. I've kept the bounty I received secret. I'll get Banit dressed up and we'll all go out for dinner. Perfect timing as well, Ma's off.

March 5, 1891

I picked up Banit's dress today. From what I saw in the shop it should be perfect. A red floral print blouse with a checkered skirt, it should look wonderful on her. I returned home and told Ma that we're going out to eat tonight, my treat. I then got cleaned up and dressed. Banit was a bit confused she kept asking "What doing?" I just smiled and said "Good things, you bathe." She was still confused but did as I asked. While she was bathing Bobby and Lilly came home. I told them that we're going out tonight and that they need to get cleaned up. First things first though, homework, Bobby got his done quickly and Lilly only needed a little help. They took baths and dressed. Banit was wearing a skirt and one of my shirts. She was looking for her usual Caddo dressings. I "borrowed" them for a bit. Once the kids came downstairs I called Banit down and gave her the dress. She smiled and tears rolled down her face. I got a big hug and all she could say was "hawweh" repeatedly. Now I know that it means thank you. Ma and Lilly took her upstairs to help her change. I was right. It looked great on Banit; despite a rather flat chest she has a nice figure. I took them to a nicer restaurant. I wanted to see how my manners lessons have paid off. Unfortunately for Lilly, Banit had to cling to my arm on the way. She didn't want to fall and get the dress dirty. Lilly huffed a bit when we left. I made the mistake of patting her on the head. She called me a jerk. I laughed. Turned out Banit really needed my help. She tripped several times and almost walked into posts and people as she kept looking down at the dress. Must mean she likes it. Banit surprised me during dinner her table manners have greatly improved. She still made a few mistakes but nothing major. While eating I told them of the bounty I got for the eight hogs I killed. Ma was dumbfounded. That's almost twice as much as she makes in a year and I made it in night. I also said that I was going after Bladderboy, they got a good laugh out of that. Ma didn't want me to go but knew that I needed to end it. I explained it as best I could for Banit she said "Ah-ah emay get bad man? Banit go with Ah-ah emay." I refused at first, but the look she gave me, I agreed so long as she did what I said. She nodded. We changed the subject and enjoyed the rest of our night. After dinner we went shopping. Before Banit arrived we were even, two girls, two boys. Now we're out numbered, Bobby and I are at their mercy, especially Bobby. We went to a clothing store that specialized in children's clothing. Poor Bobby became their doll and was dressed in just about every outfit they could find. He kept making a fuss, which just drew their attention to him. I hid in a corner and kept quiet. Things were going my way until Bobby the little traitor said, "What about Flint? Why don't you dress him up?" Little shit. They immediately turned their attention to me. Ma blocked the front door, Lilly and Banit the rear. "But they don't have men's clothing here" I said, "Guess y'all are out of luck." Ma smiled and said "But there's a men's store next door." And then I was rushed. I tried to escape but Lilly is really fast and Banit has a good grip. Ma picked me up and slung me over her shoulder like she was tossing out one of the drunks from her saloon. She carried me next door and then I became their doll, much to Bobby's amusement. The shop keeps got a good laugh.

I am very grateful to be home.

March 6, 1891

Things have gotten quiet and back to a somewhat normal state now that Bladderboy has left. Today went by much the same way they usually do, calm and boring. Ma and Lilly left for The Pasture. Bobby's staying with Will. That left Banit and I alone. Banit gets awfully amorous when we're left alone. I had to distract her somehow, so I figured I'd take her to see Lilly's show. She pouted a bit but was happy to go. The first time she saw Lilly perform it was from the upstairs office and she couldn't really see anything. This time she'd be on the floor. I told her to stay close and be polite, she nodded. We arrived a bit before the show. Lilly and Joey were glad to see her there and introduced her to Ms. Fellows. It wasn't long before I heard someone calling me from behind. It was Papel. I told him that he didn't need to work anymore that everything was done. He said he was here with some friends for the show. But he was a bit too distracted by Banit to hold a conversation. I had a great idea. Judging from how she was at the potluck on Sunday, I can only imagine what Banit would be like here. That could be a bit fun. I was right. Papel followed Banit around all night. She's finally getting a taste of her own medicine. His police buddies were over at a nearby table goading him on and teasing him. This was great. She finally had enough of it though and slapped him and ran over to crawl under my arm. She gave him the most hateful looks and said some things in Caddo that I don't think a young lady should say regardless of the language. His buddies fell out of their chairs they were laughing so hard. He surprised me though. He came up and apologized to Banit for annoying her. Kids got integrity. Perhaps I shouldn't call him kid. After the initial excitement died off Lilly and Joey came out to perform. Banit really liked Lilly's singing and cheered and applauded so much that she lost her voice by the end of the night. Once the performance was done I walked Lilly and Banit home. Banit kept praising Lilly the entire way. We couldn't understand her words, but the meaning was clear. She loved Lilly's show.

March 7, 1891

Today went much the same way as yesterday. Only Papel didn't dog Banit. Other than a couple of drunks that needed to be tossed it was a fairly easy day.

March 8, 1891

Preacher wasn't mean to me today. He wasn't nice but he wasn't mean. I think he called a truce last week due to my injury. Banit has been wearing her dress everyday. The Church women were complimenting it and Banit. She needs more that one outfit though. This one is a bit nice so I think I'll get Ms. Young to make a couple of simple ones for her to wear every day.

March 9, 1891

I'm going to wait until Thursday before we leave for Shreveport. I don't want Banit to miss any lessons. I'll see if it's possible to get an afternoon train and leave on Wednesday if nothing else. Banit seems to be a fast learner. She's learned some basic greetings last week and Joey has been teaching her the names of different things in English. I guess Banit is smart just clumsy. She's also learning verbs which is great. It's starting to get easier to understand her. At home I test her every now and then by holding up an object and asking her what it is. She's learned quite a bit and today was only her fourth lesson.

I ordered a couple of dresses for Banit. I think having three outfits should be enough for a while. Lilly or Ma can make her more as needed later on.

March 10, 1891

I bought two train tickets for tomorrow. We'll leave on the five o'clock train. Being an Indian she's not allowed to have guns, but she is allowed to have knives. I bought a nice large bladed knife as well as a smaller knife for her. I don't want her to go and not be able to defend herself. I gave them to her. She tucked the smaller one in her boot and the other she seemed happy to carry in her belt. I'm only planning on being gone through the weekend. I'd like to be back before Monday.

March 11, 1891

It turned out that the conductor that brought Banit to New Orleans was the same one that's taking us to Shreveport. He was happy to see that Banit was doing well, and thanked me for taking her in. He asked why we were going back and I told him. He laughed; he said I might not have as easy a time as I did in New Orleans. Bladderboy is apparently welcomed there. When we arrived I saw that he wasn't joking. It didn't take long before we found him. He was hanging around the end of the platform. Banit and I managed to leave without being seen. I got a room at a nearby hotel that overlooked the station. Banit wanted to go after him right then but I didn't want to deal with the locals. Who knows what crazy thing they might do, I'm not a local there after all. Bladderboy spent the entire afternoon at the station. I don't know if he was working or if that's just something he does. I'll find out tomorrow.

March 12, 1891

I check and there's a train to New Orleans that leaves daily at noon. That must have been the train we passed on the way here. I'd like to get Bladder boy on that train alive if possible but dead works too. Banit and I since we were dressed up a bit stayed in the better parts of town. We drew less attention that way and we weren't recognized. We looked for Bladderboy a bit before noon but we didn't see him. He didn't get to the station until four. That's going to be a problem. I was hoping I could just hold him at gun point and walk him onto the train. However while Banit and I ate dinner an idea crossed my mind. I could bushwhack him in an alley and secure him in a crate. It would be easy to get him back that way. We hurried back but missed him. He had already left.

March 13, 1891

This morning I bought a crate big enough to fit Bladderboy in. He won't be comfortable but he won't get away either. I hid it behind the hotel. I then bought a ticket for the New Orleans train tomorrow. I was going to get him today one way or another. About three o'clock, Banit called for me and pointed out the window facing out the rear of the hotel. Bladderboy was coming down the alley. How perfect was that? Banit grabbed her big knife and I my guns. I had her circle around the hotel and come up behind him and distract him. I would then sneak up and knock him out. He spotted me before we were able to act and he ran. Banit however stopped him. She buried her knife deep in his chest. He died there quietly. She didn't want to kill him, he just ran into her and she had her knife out. It was an accident but there's no changing what happened.

This was bad. I couldn't ship him if he's bleeding everywhere. So I dragged him and hid his body behind the crate. Banit and I returned to the room and washed her hands and knife. While she did that I went to a general store and bought some of that waterproofed canvas that's used on wagons. With Banit's help I was able to wrap the corpse in the canvas and dump him in the crate. I left the crate where it was for the time being.

Banit didn't handle killing him very well. She's been crying for the past couple of hours. She finally fell asleep a few minutes ago.

March 14, 1891

I was surprised to find that people were looking for Bladderboy. Of course I was asked if I had seen him. I responded that I didn't know who they were talking about. They tried to ask Banit, but to cover for her crying and not speaking English I told them that she was trying to get home to see her dying father but he passed and she had missed the funeral. They believed me and left. Noon was approaching fast. I was able to borrow a cart from the station, and I rolled the crate onto it. I tried to play it off as being Banit's inheritance from her deceased father. At least the station people bought it at first. The crate was loaded and we boarded. The train had just started leaving when someone saw some blood on the cart. He had called for the train to stop but I told the conductor to go. I ran up to the front of the train and held the driver at gunpoint telling him to go and go fast. We escaped.

We made record time getting back to New Orleans. I apologized to the engineers. They said I wasn't welcome on their train again. I was met at the station by the police, including Papel. He said that I was under arrest for murder. I smiled, told them I wanted to collect a bounty and showed them the body. Sure enough they apologized to me, even though they didn't need to, and called a coroner out to take care of him. While at the station I talked with Papel. He said that they telegraphed a message back saying that charges were not to be filed as I was collecting the bounty on a wanted individual. I don't think I'll go back to Shreveport anytime soon. I collected the bounty and gave it all to Banit. She deserves it for all that she's been through. She's been awfully quiet. She's a kind person. I doubt she's ever hurt anyone much less killed. I feel sorry for her. I really wish that I was able to take him alive or that it had been me that killed him. I don't ever want to see her like this again.

March 15, 1891

Even the preacher knew to be nice today. I told him what happened and he said vengeance is never the path to take, but sometimes it is a necessary one in the cause of justice. Ma and Lilly consoled her as best they could. Not speaking the same language makes this especially difficult.

March 16, 1891

With everyone at school it was almost painfully quiet in the house. I was thankful when everyone got home. Banit seemed to have cheered up as well. She's still a bit down but she's definitely gotten better. She showed us how much she learned today. She seems to love her little school. Ma made dinner tonight and we all played cards in the living room while Ma was working.

March 17, 1891

At bedtime last night, I claimed the couch and gave Banit my bed, but she was up to her old tricks and cuddled up to me again. She rested her head on my chest and I looked down at her. For some reason I started laughing. Then she did. We couldn't stop it was riotous. Lilly came down to find out what was so funny but at some point we started crying and laughing and we didn't know what was so blasted funny. Lilly said we were crazy and went back to bed. Banit and I eventually calmed down and fell asleep.

This morning was a good morning. I guess all the laughing and crying last night was exactly what she needed. She was back to her old self. Lilly was a bit jealous of Banit and when I saw them off she kissed me on the cheek and shot Banit a rather challenging look. I smiled; it's gonna be one of those days again. Banit accepted her challenge by kissing me on the lips. Lilly huffed and stormed off. Banit just laughed and laughed. It's definitely going to be one of those days. After lunch Banit left for her lessons. While she was gone I checked with Mrs. Young on the other dresses I ordered. She finished them, one pink the other yellow. She even made a couple of aprons to go with them. I returned home to greet Banit and the kids. Lilly and Bobby arrived first. We quickly did their homework and Bobby left to go play with Will. Lilly seemed preoccupied with looking out the front window. I was reading on the couch, when suddenly, Lilly raced in and jumped in my lap. She cuddled up to me and pulled my arms around her. I was a bit confused by this until the reason for her behavior walked through the door. Banit entered and saw Lilly in my lap. Lilly gave her the smuggest look. It seems that Lilly is very jealous of Banit. Banit came and sat on the chair across the coffee table and smiled at Lilly. You could almost feel the tension in the air. They had a stare-down, vying for dominance. This was hilarious! I've never seen two girls fight over a guy before. I still wonder what would have happened had I told them that I think of them as my daughter and niece. I let this go on for a bit before I picked Lilly up and sat her on the couch. I couldn't take much more. I walked outside and down the street a bit before I broke down laughing. The rest of the day went about how you'd expect. A battle of romance, and I'm stuck in the middle.

March 18, 1891

I woke up being smothered to death. Both Lilly and Banit had snuck in and cuddled up to me. Well, not so much up to me as much as on me. It's surprisingly difficult to sleep three people on a couch. I think this is going to be the norm for a while. Ma isn't helping. She went shopping and came back with single beds. She said that she's going to replace the single bed in my room with these two. She also bought a screen to give Banit some privacy, not that she cares. Lilly was furious but wasn't going to say anything to Ma. I think this is Ma's way of tormenting me. I avoided the house the rest of the day only coming in to sleep.

March 19, 1891

Even though I have my own bed, it's surprisingly crowded. Banit and Lilly cuddled me out of it. It was a good laugh this morning. Last night both of them were cuddling up to me so much that it was hard to breathe, but I fixed that. I hugged Lilly tight to me and slowly rolled over placing her in Banit's arms. They ended up cuddling with each other as I had slipped out and slept in Banit's bed. I woke before they did and I woke Ma to show her. She let out a little laugh which woke them. They looked so happy when they were asleep and so MAD once they saw who they were hugging. Ma and I were chased out of the room. We laughed so hard but that gave us an idea. We'll let them share the room and I'll share one with Bobby. That way I won't have to deal with being cuddled to death. When Ma and I told them, they both pouted. It was very funny.

Early this afternoon I was reading in a chair, Ma was embroidering something, when Banit came in. She looked worried about something. I asked her what was wrong and she held up the $2000 bounty I gave her and said "What do?" That's actually a good question. She doesn't really know what to buy and where, and with her limited English she'd be taken advantage of. Ma took charge though. Ma told her that she'd hang on to it and anytime she wanted something to let her know, thus establishing the Bank of Ma. Ha!

All in all today was a fairly relaxing day. None of us really did much of anything. Mostly Ma and I worked with Banit on her English.

March 20, 1891

Tonight was Lilly's show and Banit really wanted to go. That was fine I didn't have any other plans. I couldn't help but notice just how many policemen came tonight. This is quickly becoming a favorite haunt for them. But the good thing is when someone gets out of hand they'll usually toss them out before Ma or I have to. Even off duty they're keeping the peace. Oh, Banit was chased around the bar the entire night again. If it wasn't one man it was another and she didn't want anything to do with them. Whenever she'd get tired she'd cuddle up to me and shoot angry looks at her pursuers. It was great.

March 21, 1891

We did more of the same today, chores and a bit of lazing about followed by Lilly's show. I did get a chance to see Banit split wood. She's very skilled despite her gawky nature. She kept her feet spread wide so she wouldn't hit them and brought the axe down perfectly straight. We took turns splitting wood. Bobby helped by stacking it.

The rest of the day was pretty boring after we finished.

March 22, 1891

All I have to say about today is the preacher is back to his usual antics.

March 23, 1891

I wandered around a bit and bumped into Beth and Clair. I haven't seen those two in a couple of months. Clair said that she's being courted by a man working for one of the newspapers. Beth is still unattached at the moment. We spoke for a while and caught up with each other before we went our separate ways. It wasn't long before Beth caught up to me and kissed me. To do such a thing in public! That's going to start rumors. She gave me a wink and ran off. I followed thinking she was heading for her room but turns out that's not what she had in mind. I went home after that. Banit was still so excited about her lessons. I wish Lilly had her enthusiasm.

March 24, 1891

Ma stopped me today. I had forgotten the date. She said that we'll be visiting Pa tomorrow. I don't know what we're going to do about the kids. It's a full day trip to his grave and back. I ask Ma if she thought that Joey or Mr. Harcourt could watch them. Ma said that she'd ask Joey tonight.

I made a mistake today...a fairly large one too. I fell asleep on the couch. Ma was gone, and only Lilly and Banit came home. Bobby was off playing with Will. I was awoken very suddenly. Banit had snuck a rope around me. She quickly tied me up. She and Lilly painted with her makeup and I was the canvas. I was not happy about this. They left me tied up the entire afternoon. They both took turns feeding me dinner and other such torments. My nails are very pretty though. I'm a pretty pretty princess....shit.

March 25, 1891

Joey was working but Mr. Harcourt agreed to watch the kids, I warned him about them though. Boy, did he ever laugh. I was able to get the makeup off but it almost took my fur with it. I can't do anything about my nails. I almost felt like wearing gloves all day. Ma got a good laugh at my expense when she saw me tied up on the floor like that.

Anyways, Ma and I got on the stage and headed off to the family farm. It was nice seeing the rest of the family. Ma's brother hasn't changed a bit. He kept asking when I was going to get some meat on my bones. I'm an OTTER damn it! Not a BULL, we don't get that big! Ugh... Auntie Bea was as affectionate as always. I'm fairly certain that my cheeks have been stretched out and my spine has a couple of different bends as well. She's not as big or strong as Ma but she's still fairly stout. However, Auntie Bea has the biggest breasts I have ever seen, I remember when I was young I used to try to sneak peeks of them. Now though she'll smother the life out of me with them. Her kids, my cousins, have all grown. I'm the oldest one out of us but now I'm the smallest. Ricky is now Richard and has grown into a mountain. Catherine looks just like her mother did when she was young although taller at just over six foot. Even Bubba the youngest one has gotten bigger than me. He's twenty now and while not as big as Richard still stands at 6'8" at least. I really need to watch where everyone steps. I could get crushed and they'd never know.

We all gathered together today to celebrate Pa's birthday. We started out at the family grave yard. I got see Granny and Gramp's graves. And getting to see Pa's was great. We had a small party there and left flowers and poured some drinks for him. It was nice. The rest of the family then adjourned to the house. I stayed. I wanted to talk to him a bit. I thanked him for saving me and raising me. Then I told him of what I've been up to, about Lilly and Bobby, and I even told him of Banit. All in all it was a nice talk. Afterwards I joined the rest inside and we ate until bursting. No meats or fishes though. We got drunk and told stories of Pa and his antics. Uncle Richard told stories of Ma when she was little and embarrassed her a bit. And then I was asked about my rescues. I told them pretty much everything that's happened up to know. Uncle Richard has a deafening laugh, and he laughed and laughed. He looked around at everyone. We were confused as to what was so funny. He said, "Pa may not have had kids of his own, and he may be gone, but he's still left a legacy of saving kids!" and he pointed to me. We understood then and joined in his laughter. I guess he's right. Pa really couldn't "not" help others. He must have passed that on to me.

After the party, Ma and I said our goodbyes and headed home. We arrived just after 11. All the lamps were on and there was a lot of noise. Upon entering we saw Banit on the couch laughing her butt off pointing at Lilly, who was riding Mr. Harcourt like a pony, and had lassoed Bobby. Mr. Harcourt had been painted up to look like an Indian's horse. Dangerous game you're playing Mr. Harcourt. Ma let out a low growl and yelled "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?" Time itself froze, even the crickets outside got quiet. Ma looked over them then back at me and then stomped over to where Bobby was tied up and pulled the rope off of him. She glared around the room and said "This is not how you tie a lasso!" Our jaws hit the floor. Ma quickly retied it and roped me. We spent the rest of the night playing and roughhousing. Ma's a strange one. She can get so mad about the smallest thing then join in and play like she's a kid again.

Post script: Ma forgot. Tomorrow's a school day.

March 26, 1891

It was hell trying to wake Lilly and Bobby. Ma dressed Lilly while I dressed Bobby. We almost felt like letting them stay home today. But it's important that they go.

Their teacher walked them home today. She wanted to know why they couldn't stay awake in class. Ma and I apologized to her and explained what happened. Later on, Mr. Harcourt came by to apologize as well. He said that the teacher chewed his ear off for keeping those kids up all night. Oops. Lilly and Bobby napped for a while. When Banit saw Mr. Harcourt she ran up and hugged him. Looks like Mr. Harcourt made a friend. We visited for a while and Ma tried to pay him for watching them but he refused. He said that he's more than willing to watch them anytime, and playing with them is all the payment he wants. I believe it too.

That night we all went to be early. I'm staying up a bit to make sure that Banit doesn't try anything. She's still well rested.

March 27, 1891

Things are back to normal again. Only thing is that at Lilly's show, Banit spent the entire night either glued to me or on the second floor. Ma doesn't let people up there.

On a more personal note, it's getting fairly difficult to write daily when nothing unusual happens. I think I'll hold off unless I do something or find something worth writing about.

March 30, 1891

Dutchy found me today. He was as excited as usual. And here I was avoiding him. He started to talk about my going away party but I got mad and punched him and stormed off. I'm not mad about having sex with a guy. I'll do that just for something different. What pissed me off was that he snuck in. Far as I'm concerned that's rape and that's what angered me. I started to walk off when he stopped me. He apologized and said that he had a going away gift that he forgot to give me. I was still mad and told him to stuff it and I walked off. Absolute shame that he's the best tailor I've come across. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't give him the time of day.

After school Lilly came in with a box. She said that Dutchy gave it to her to deliver to me. I said burn it. Curious she opened it. Inside were two new suits. One a light blue cotton suit, which must be the seersucker that he mentioned, it was complete with pants, shirt and a tie. The other was an extremely nice black broadcloth suit. It came with a jacquard green silk vest and a green tie. Damn if he doesn't have good taste. Well, how mad can I be? I'll have a talk with him tomorrow.

Post script: I overheard Bobby talking to Lilly tonight. It seems that Lilly's birthday is coming up. If I'm not mistaken it will be on the ninth. I'll talk to Ma about that. I did hear Lilly tell Bobby not to mention it.

March 31, 1891

I spoke with Dutchy today. Basically I said that I'll forgive him this once but if he ever tries something like that again I'll shoot him. He was happy enough with that.

Later I went to check on Banit and her lessons. Joey looks to be having a great time as a teacher. I didn't want to interrupt so I left them alone. Instead I wanted to get Ma in on a secret. I told her that Lilly's birthday was coming up and that I'd like to have a surprise party for her. Ma loved the idea. We'll have it at the house and invite her friends. Ma said that she'll take care of the food if I'll get the rest. I agreed and off I went. First stop was Mrs. Young. I told her what I wanted to do and asked for a couple of dresses including a fancy one for her to perform in. She agreed and I left it up to her. I asked her to box them when finished and give them to Mr. Harcourt. He was the next stop. After hearing of our plans he wanted in. He agreed to holding on to Lilly's dresses and he said to leave the party games and treats to him. I offered to pay but he refused, I just about had to twist his arm to get him to let me pay for half. Jr. and Ms. Fellows came in during that and I invited them as well. I want this to be a big party. I then ran to the school. It was letting out soon and I wanted to invite her school friends. I was having flashbacks of when I was in school. It always seemed like time slowed down the last few minutes of class. I heard the teachers end class and I hid. I could only imagine how bad this is going to look. Bobby ran off with Will someplace and Lilly said her byes to her friends. It took forever for them to finally leave. I lucked out and her friends headed off together. Once I was sure that Lilly couldn't see me I followed them and stopped them. Of course I got a lot of giggles and the like, but I suffered through them and invited them to the party. They got very excited and started talking about this and that but I interrupted them to make sure they knew that it was surprise party, which Lilly and Bobby don't know about. They liked the idea and promised to keep it a secret. I told them to come straight to the house after school on the ninth. I'll have Bobby and Lilly pick up a package at Mr. Harcourt's afterschool. That should be enough of a distraction.

Plans made and guests invited I headed home. I'd better not tell Banit until the day of so that she doesn't say anything accidentally.

After she got home, I told Ma of the plans. She loved it. She also ordered me to wear the tie that Lilly made me for Christmas. Fair enough.

April 1, 1891

It's April fool's day. Oh, what a wondrous holiday. I started off the day with a simple joke. Late last night I cut out some paper fish. I was able to pin them on the back of Lilly and Bobby before they left for school. They never noticed. Banit didn't understand. How would I explain it too her? I just said "Today I joke" and left it at that. I don't think she got it. Oh well, she will. Ma was still asleep in bed. I had Banit follow me in there making her stay quiet. I then gently rolled Ma onto her side and tucked the sheets under her. I did the same on the other side. Banit looked confused. I smiled and winked at her. I then hung a paper fish on the door saying "April Fools". We then headed downstairs and waited. While waiting I taught Banit how to make coffee. I had just sat down with a cup when I heard a loud thud from upstairs. Banit ran to help but I stopped her. We waited a bit more and heard "DAMN IT FLINT!" I smiled "THIS ISN'T FUNNY!" I sat Banit down on the couch and told her not to move. Ma came downstairs like a hurricane. "Of all the low down, dirty, rotten, things..." Ma charged and I bolted out the back door laughing. She chased me around the yard for a while when I shouted over my shoulder "Ma! I thought you knew better than to play outside in your undies." That really got her riled up. Better to take my punishment now that to get her even madder. So with her hot on my heels I stopped. She ran right past me, tripped and fell. Banit was standing in the door, so I asked her to move. I was walking past Ma when she grabbed me by my leg, picked me up over her head and spun me around. She then tossed me onto a bush. Even that mad she still won't do anything to hurt me. She picked me up again holding me to eye level and said "That'd better be the last one". I smiled and said "Nope." Exasperated, she dropped me and walked inside. She made sure to lock the door behind her and told Banit not to unlock them. I sat there laughing. I knew she'd do that so I left a window cracked. I guess she knows my tricks all too well, when I went to open the window I found it locked in fact all the windows were locked. I made sure this morning to unlock them. I climbed a downspout and made it to the roof. I then jumped down to the second floor balcony only to find those windows were also locked. Damn Ma, when did you get so fast? I had just about given up when Ma called me from the front porch. I climbed down and went to see what I'd have to do to get back inside. Ma sat Banit down next to her in a chair and said, "Iffin ya wanna come inside, all ya have to do is sing a little song and dance fer us. I think Banit and I would like ta hear Camp Town Races". Damn, jokes on me. So, without any other options, I sang. About half way through and looking quite pleased with herself she said "Now, ya'll done fergot ta dance too. We want a song and a dance." By this time a small crowed had gathered. So I sang and danced, all the time hearing laughter all around. That's when I realized, I forgot I was still wasn't dressed either. Ma and Banit were crying they were laughing so hard. Ma finally let me back inside. I quickly dressed and sat on the couch reading. Ma walked by, patted me on the head and said "April Fools". AARRGGHH! She got me good! I can't really be mad at her. I did start it, but dang she's evil. Banit hummed "Camp town races" for the rest of the day. I no longer like that song.

Lilly and Bobby came home. Lilly was madder than a hornet at me. Bobby thought it was hilarious. Lilly shot me angry looks the rest of the day. That's the response I was looking for! Bobby tried to get me a few times but couldn't. That night we all tried to explain to Banit what we were doing. I think she started to understand a bit. I didn't tease her as I didn't think she'd understand. I'm glad I didn't. Bobby tried, Banit fell for it hard and almost hurt herself. We called a truce and played games until bedtime.

April 3, 1891

Today was calm but this evening was interesting. Banit and I went to the show as we normally would, however Ma had prepared a special treat for me. Ma set a chair up in front of the stage and made me sit in it. Mrs. Fellows and Lilly then began their show with, "Camp Town Races". Ma made me sit in that chair until the end of the song. Only thing I could do was holler out "Alright Ma, I get it, no more pranks." That got everyone laughing.

Is it possible to crawl under a stone and disappear?

April 9, 1891

Today is Lilly's birthday. She turns fourteen. Ma and I acted like we normally do. I asked Bobby and her to swing by Mr. Harcourt's and pick up a package for me on their way home. I said I was going to be busy today. They agreed and left for school. Ma and I sprung to action. I told Banit that we're having a party for Lilly. I tried to explain birthdays to her but I don't think Caddo celebrate birthdays. Oh, well, I had her help me clear the back yard and set up some tables we borrowed from The Pasture. Ma was inside cooking. She said that she was going to bake a cake as well. Ma's cakes are great. Mrs. Harcourt came by and brought some party favors, games, candy, some decorations and a gift. She stuck around and helped us decorate. Not long after Ms. Fellows came by and helped out as well. With everyone's help we were able to have a nice looking party. Ms. Fellows and Mrs. Young had joined Ma in the kitchen and were helping her prepare. About two o'clock Mr. Harcourt came by, he said that Jr. is watching the store and is going to close once Lilly picks up the "package". We had a table set up just for her gifts. And she had quite a few already. A man came by saying that he was the parent of one of Lilly's friends. He was dropping off a few presents that his daughter and friends had purchased. He left and we somehow managed to get everything ready. A bit after three a few girls showed up, and a few had gifts. A bit later Jr. ran in saying that he rushed over as quickly as he could, he gave Lilly and Bobby the packages and they were on their way. So we took to our positions hiding around the inside of the house and once we saw Lilly we got everyone to be quiet. When they entered we all jumped out yelling "Surprise!" Lilly looked scared to death, Bobby wasn't much better. It took them a minute to realize what happened. We had a great party. Lilly was on the verge of tears the entire afternoon. She opened all of her gifts except for the packages that she carried home. I asked her to open them as well. The first one was a pair of simple dresses and an apron the matched except for the colors. The second was a very fancy bright green dress. At first I didn't think it would be appropriate for her but it came with some other bits and bobbles so maybe there's more than what I'm seeing. The party was a great hit and by the end of it none of the kids could hold their heads up. We'll let them stay the night and send them to school tomorrow. Lilly did her best to say goodbye to everyone but was fading fast. Once everything had quieted down Lilly and her friends fell asleep in the living room. Ma, Banit and I covered them with blankets and went to bed.

April 10, 1891

We somehow managed to get all of those girls up and fed before sending them off to school. That is not something that I'd call fun, but it's done and Ma's gone back to bed. Banit and I are cleaning up from yesterday's party. I set Banit to cleaning up the yard while I took care of the inside. By noon the inside was done but the yard still needed help. We still had the tables and chairs we borrowed from The Pasture to return and tablecloths to wash. We left so that I could borrow a wagon and horse to carry the tables back. I got the wagon and by the time we returned home Ma had woken and dressed. She helped load the tables and chairs and I drove us to the saloon. Ma and I carried the tables in while Banit carried the chairs, chairs are less expensive. Luckily she only broke one. After that I returned the wagon and horse and basically lounged around in the sun. It was a pleasant afternoon after all. Banit's starting to get fairly good with her English and is able to hold a simple conversation. She's been taking every opportunity to practice and it's shown, even though she's only been taking lessons for a month.

The kids returned that afternoon. I probably should have washed the table cloths but I didn't. Banit and Lilly took care of that. I helped to hang them to dry is all and Lilly let me know about it. Eh...

April 11, 1891

I'm starting to get wanderlust again. I thought about heading back to Texas and seeing if I can find anything again, but really, I'm happy with how things turned out. So, since I've been reading these dime novels and I've been wanting to see if there's any truth to them I think I'll do some traveling. Its spring so now's a great time to start. I may leave out this next week. That'll give me some time to figure out where I'm going and how I'm getting there. I spoke to Ma about that as well. Her response "Why don't you settle down and get married?" Eventually, eventually, still, there's a lot of fun to be had first. Lilly and Bobby weren't too enthusiastic about it either, Banit asked to go with me. She was adamant about it too. I told her "If Banit stays, then I have more reason to return." She blushed and smiled. Easy distraction.

April 15, 1891

I've made my plans. So far they're to hop on the train to Corpus Christi, Texas. From there I'll board the train to San Antonio and make my way down to Laredo. Then to Ft. Worth, El Paso and up through New Mexico, Kansas and back to New Orleans. I'll try to be no more than two months. I'll leave on the nineteenth. This route allows me to take trains versus stagecoaches, and so I should be much more comfortable. I'll still travel light. Two suits and a set of traveling clothes should do, and no more than one bag.

In doing my reading for this trip I've learned a couple of things. One, I should have done this ten years ago, and two bring lots of bullets. Laredo is still supposed to be fairly wild.

April 18, 1891

It's Saturday before I leave. I told Ma I didn't want anything to do with any going away parties. I spent the entire day at home. That was both a good and bad decision. Good because I didn't get drunk, bad because almost the entire day was spent with Banit cuddled under one arm and Lilly either under the other or in my lap. Both were begging me not to go. I actually feel bad about leaving now but if I don't then I'll never know nor will I be able to get rid of this travel itch I have. I leave first thing in the morning. Ma made me promise in front of everyone that no matter what that I'll stay out of trouble and come back home. In private she also made me promise not to send any more rescues home. Other than Lilly and Banit being more affectionate and possessive today was nice.

April 19, 1891

So last night was interesting. I've been sharing the room with Bobby and the girls have had theirs. That changed. Lilly booted Bobby from our room and she took his place. Banit was right behind her. I knew that Lilly wouldn't try anything but Banit. There's no telling what she might do. At first things were quiet, Lilly had fallen asleep under my arm and Banit was on the other side. I thought that was how it was going to be. Then I felt a hand drifting down my stomach. Banit was up to her tricks again. I told her to stop several times but she just smiled and kept going. I pointed to Lilly and said "No". Banit whispered in my ear "Banit give present, Ah-ah emay no move." I gave in. I told her not to wake Lilly. She nodded. She had just got my underwear down and started rubbing when Ma came in. She pulled Banit off of me and glared at me. I whispered "Thank you!" to Ma. I was both relieved and saddened by this. Ma carried Banit off and made Banit sleep with her. Banit pouted on the way out. Lilly never stirred.

This morning, we woke up early. I wanted to spend some time with everyone before I had to leave. I spoke with Ma and apologized to her and told her that I tried to stop Banit. Ma didn't believe me but what can I do? Banit kept trying to lure me off, but I "didn't" notice. At the train station, Banit was especially mopey. Lilly and Bobby saw me off cheerfully as did Ma. Banit though kept saying "No leave"; I hugged her and told her that I'd be back soon and that I want to see just how good she gets with her English. With that I was off.

Again I paid extra to make sure I got a sleeper cabin. It will take about three days to reach Corpus Christi, so a sleeper cabin is worth the money, besides I'm quite pleased with my company as well. Three young attractive girls, all on their way to Corpus just like me. One is a gray flop eared rabbit, the other is a curvy badger girl, and the third is a lizard of some sort. I've never had the opportunity to "converse" with a lizard girl. I've offered to escort them the duration of the trip.

Post script: I think I'm going to enjoy this.

-End Chapter 2-
