It had been a week since Ryu came to stay with me and my family, and things were going okay. We still had our problems with bullies and ass-holes.. but they were becoming less frequent. It was an overcast Monday morning, and Ryu and I were waiting for our bus. Once it arrived we boarded and took a seat. We sat in our usual seat, and listened to Ryu's I-pod for most of the trip, but today we made an extra stop.... A muscular white fox with purple highlights wearing a hoody stepped onto the bus, and sat in the seat next to ours, he payed no attention to us, or anyone else for that matter; he must have been caught up in his own thoughts. I had to say though; if I didn't already have Ryu... I'd have been tempted. ********************************************************************************************************************** We arrived at school, and left the crowded metal hell that was our school bus; the new kid stayed behind waiting for everyone else to leave before departing. "Another day... another day in hell.." he mumbled as he walked toward the entrance of the building. Ryu and I approached him at the door of the school; it couldn't hurt to try and make a friend outta the guy. "Hey, um.. are you ok man," Ryu asked, "you seem sorta... I dunno.. pissed off.." He paused, his hand still on the door, and turned his head slightly, giving us a sideways glance, then turned back to his original direction. "I'm fine." he replied, setting off towards what I guessed would be his first class. ********************************************************************************************************************** We entered our home room and took our usual seats, not paying much attention to the gossip going around the room. The bell rang, and our homeroom teacher, Mrs. Resaka, called our attention to the front of the class; where, to our surprise, was none other than the fox kid that we saw this morning. "Here we go again," Ryu mumbled, "I swear anyone tries messing with the new guy... I'll fuck em up." "I'd say by the looks of him.. he can take care of himself Ryu-chan," I whispered nervously, "I mean.. gods.. he's got more muscles than you and I put together.. and he seems like he's been in his fair share of brawls.." "Still.. If I let them get by with it, I'll lose my title as the resident 'Bully Breaker' of the school, and I like having a reputation." I sighed at that comment; just a little over a week in school and Ryu had a reputation for beating up anyone who bullied others, especially ones who couldn't defend themselves. The fox introduced himself as David Prower,and took the only available seat left; in the back, next to us. He sat down, sending Ryu and I a quick 'I want to be left alone' glance before pulling his hood over his head and ignoring everyones existence. "I wonder what his problem is..?" Ryu commented with a huff "Trouble at home probably.." I guessed, and let it go, listening to the teacher go through the usual crap, and waiting for the distinctive techno-phonic ring of the bell.... ********************************************************************************************************************** It was 5th period before we saw David again. It was gym class, my worst nightmare, and we were playing dodge-ball.. "Let's see... we got a nerdy bunny, two gays, an athletically retarded bull, and the new kid as competition fellas..." said Leon, the lion leading the opposing team, "Looks like an easy win..." "Shut your mouth Leon," Ryu stated dryly, "We kicked your asses last time.. just me and Kai.. And if the new guy gets in on the action... I'd say you're fucked royally.." With that said, the coach blew the whistle, and the game began. Immediately, we lost the bunny, Adrian, and Ben, the bull, leaving the game one-sided. Ryu cracked his knuckles, and stepped up his game, dodging or catching everything that came his way. I just stood by and watched mostly, dodging when necessary, and David.. he just stood still, the balls just seeming not to be interested in him.. After the game was over, our team losing this round, the coach sent us to the showers; this is why gym was my nightmare.. Once in the locker rooms Ryu and I stripped of our sweaty gym uniforms, and headed to the shower areas. "Well well.. if it ain't the little fur fags Kai and Ryu! Don't get too excited boys.. don't wanna get nailed for indecent exposure.." Leon spat sarcastically. "Hey..." said a voice, I recognized it as David's, "leave them alone.. they haven't done anything to you, leave them be." "And if I don't? Well newbie; hmmm?" That's when David surprised me. Out from under the fur on one of his tails, he revealed a strap, with a sheathed dagger attached. Pulling the dagger from it's sheathe, he used it to trim some of the fur on his face, then pointed it at Leon, and smiled. "If you don't... let's just say it won't be pretty.. I'll string your entrails all over this room... Now leave them alone; you're getting on my last nerve. " A few of the others in the room drew back a bit from shock, and Leon gulped before backing away to the other end of the locker rooms and staying very silent. "Um.. Thanks.. David.." I said, a slight blush on my face from the view I was getting. "You annoy me too.. but you're welcome... I don't think they'll bother you for a while.."he replied almost emotionlessly. It hurt to think that he thought I was annoying, especially since I hadn't done anything to him. I let my head sag a little, my hair falling to cover my face. I wanted to cry out and hit him.. but I owed him, so I let it slide; Ryu, on the other hand.. wouldn't let it go so easily. "You could try bein' a little nicer to him ya know," he began, grabbing David by the fur of his chest and jerking him down to eye level, "I don't know what you're fucking problem is.. and I'm sure it's terrible, whatever it is, but let me make one thing straight; You do NOT hurt him, physically or emotionally.. 'cuz if you do, you have to contend with me; and I REALLY don't want to have to hurt you.." David stood there emotionless, as if he thought nothing of Ryu's threat, then jerked free of his grip, nodded in understanding, and walked into one of the showers, washing off quickly, then leaving to get dressed. ********************************************************************************************************************* I managed to catch David alone during 7th period. I had excused myself to the rest-room, grabbing the hall pass on my way out as not to get into trouble, and ducked into the nearest bathroom. What I saw when I entered surprised me; David was standing there carving a small gash in his shoulder with the knife from earlier that day. I approached him slowly and cautiously, placing a hand on his shoulder. "David... Are you alright. I know you don't really know me all that well.. but... If you're carving yourself up.. there's gotta be something wrong.. for Gods sake, you can talk to me about what's going on.. I won't judge." David turned and looked at me, replying, "Look kid, I know you mean well, but just leave me be.. I'll be fine.." then he left, without another word. After that, I left myself, going back to my last class shortly before the bell rang. I was truly wishing he'd really be fine like he said... To Be Continued..
