A Walk Through the Past

Another independent story I had started a while ago and decided to finish to get something out there, two friends are invited to preview a brand new interactive exhibit, only to find out exactly how immersive the experience really is.

It was yet another hot summer day as Brandon sat on the concrete steps of the natural history museum, watching the humans and anthros walk by from the relative shade of the nearby buttress. Despite it being only ten in the morning his shirt had already started to get sticky from sweat, the cool of the shadow merely making the heat tolerable. Had it been his choice he wouldn't even be here, he mused as he pulled out an already warm bottle of water and took a long drank from it, he would be down in the cool basement of his home watching television or playing video games.

It was long before the source of his need to venture outside came forth, a brown and white furred wolf wearing shorts and a tank-top waved his hand in the air at him. "Oh good, you made it!" The anthro exclaimed as he reached Landon's refuge from the heat. "I was hoping that you would."

"Well you made it pretty clear over the phone that you wanted me to come out today Lark." Brandon replied, wiping the sweat from his brown hair as he passed the water to the panting wolf, who accepted it eagerly. "Something about 'dragging me out by my nape if I didn't'. So why did we have to show up here right when the museum opened?"

"Because of... these!" Lark reached behind him and whipped out two tickets covered in gold foil, putting them so close to the human's face that he could hardly read what he said. "Ta da! Happy Birthday! Ever since I've been coming here for my doctorate work I've made friends with one of the researchers here and they agreed to let us be the first to try out a brand new interactive exhibit before it opens to the public in a month!"

As Brandon pushed the excited canine's hand away from his face he allowed his displeasure at being out in the heat to fade slightly. It was no secret that he was a bit of an ancient history buff, which is how he had met Lark during a college presentation on campus in the first place. When he examined the tickets further he saw that they were for an exhibit called 'A Walk Through the Past: Living in the Last Ice Age', which only further piqued his interest. There had been a lot of speculation that the museum had been working on something that would rival the entertainment of some amusement parks but information had been held back to the general public except for the date of its completion.

"Lark, I don't know what to say." Brandon said as he took one of the tickets. "Thank you so much."

The wolf just grinned even wider and motioned for them to go to the main entrance. As they got up the stairs they saw the morning greeter unlocking the doors, the panthress greeting Lark by name as they walked inside. Both males sighed in relief at the cool air of the interior lobby, the air conditioning ruffling through hair and fur as they made their way across the marble mosaic floor. Even though he was a season pass holder Brandon couldn't help but feel a bit of awe at the displays as they passed by him, wondering what it must have been like back then as they moved through them.

The displays abruptly ended as they reached the newest wing of the museum, the entire entranceway covered with thick black tarps along with a security guard that stood in front of the only exposed entrance. Lark didn't even miss a beat as he showed the man the ticket, Brandon following suit which caused the officer to step aside and let them pass. "So have you been working on this at all?" He asked as they walked in, the wolf shaking his head.

At first all they could see was darkness, but suddenly the lights in the area flickered to life and illuminated their surroundings. The room itself was relatively small, with several rows of chairs and a desk made out of marble. The opposite wall appeared to be made out of solid steel with one door that was currently open that lead into a small chamber with a secondary door on the other side. Other than them the room was completely empty, although it didn't stay that way for long as a raptor in a white lab coat stepped in from the door they had just come from.

"Lark, so good to see you again." The scientist said as he shook the wolf's hand. "I just read your latest draft of your thesis and I have to say your work on modern day migratory patterns is just stunning." Brandon looked at the two for a second before the raptor quickly turned to him as well. "Apologies for not introducing myself earlier, my name is Dr. Kenneth Cole, though you can call me Ken. You must be Lark's friend Brandon, the theoretical mathematics doctorate student with a penchant for ancient history?"

"Heh, I guess you could say that." Brandon replied bashfully as he shook Ken's hand.

"Dr. Cole is the foremost expert on evolutionary biogenetics." Lark explained. "He's the one who was able to not only track where all current members of anthro-humanity evolved from but also the time periods where mutations caused several different races to split off and form into what we see today. He could tell you right now just from the way you walk, talk, and look on what your genetics delineated from."

"Well my friend here has certainly given me a glowing review but that work is still on-going." Ken corrected. "Though I was certainly glad to dispel the whole 'all humans came from ape ancestry' myth. For instance with your slightly pronounced upper and lower canines and slope of your ears you have a bit of feline ancestry in you, possibly tiger from the light bi-coloration in your skin tone."

"That's amazing Doct... er, Ken." Brandon said. "I don't know myself but now I have something to look up when I get home. Is this new exhibit part of that work?"

"It is part of why the group that I work for has put so much money into this display and ones like it around the world. I'm hoping that we can not only provide an educational amusement for the masses but also get a look into the ancient world that we have long left behind. This..." the raptor gestured to the metal door as he spoke, "this is going to be our window into that world. But I've babbled on long enough, I'm sure you two are anxious to see for yourselves what has been created here."

"You bet." Brandon replied, looking at the steel door. "So is this some sort of guided tour?"

The raptor laughed and guided them towards the chamber. "Something far better than that." He boasted as he took their tickets and handed them two stone pendants. "What we've built in there is nothing short of a whole new, ancient world that you are free to roam around in and experience for yourself. All perfectly safe mind you, and with a few additional treats that I'm going to leave as a surprise. Normally we'd limit the experience to an hour per group, but since Lark is such a good friend and you're both very interested you're getting the whole day."

"Wow, thanks Ken." Lark said in appreciation as they stepped into the chamber.

"No problem, now when the door closes the walls will open and I want you to get changed." Dr. Cole instructed. "There are privacy curtains if you're shy, but once you've put on the entire costume and put your clothes away hit the green button and we'll let you into the exhibit. Once you're in feel free to do whatever you desire, we'll keep track of you through the pendants your wearing as well as monitoring stations hidden throughout the exhibit. Everything is carefully controlled, so you should have no worries about anything and just enjoy yourselves, okay?"

The two nodded and Ken gave them a thumbs up as the metal door slid shut between them. As soon as it sealed completely several compartments opened in one of the side walls, which revealed the 'costumes' that the raptor had mentioned. "Animal skins?" Brandon asked as he pulled the thick hide off the rack and nearly fell from the weight of it.

"Talk about wanting to be authentic." Lark said as he began to pull off his top, stopping at the buckle on his shorts as he looked over and saw the apprehension in his friend's face. "C'mon Brandon, it's just going to be us anyway, why not get into the spirit of things? We're going to be the first to experience a world that occurred millions of years ago, even if it is simulated, get excited!"

The canine's enthusiasm was infectious and Brandon couldn't help but grin back before he peeled off his own sweaty shirt from his body. He shivered slightly as his skin made contact with the air, unaware of how cool it was in the chamber until then. Nevertheless he shed the rest of his clothes and opted for a simple leather loincloth and a pair of thick, crude leggings as well as a poncho-like top garment complete with hood. "So much for one size fits all." He joked as he watched his friend struggle slightly with the overly-big clothes as well, feeling his own skin start to heat up once more.

Once the two had finished with a pair of heavy hide boots and a set of rock-tipped spears, something that caused them both to grin at, they walked in front of the exhibit entrance door and hit the green button. Both of them were nearly knocked back by the sudden change of pressure, both of them also nearly blinded by the dazzling white landscape that laid on the other side of the threshold. It took their eyes a few seconds to adjust, but once they did their mouths dropped simultaneously in awe at what they saw.

It was as if they had stepped outside into a wooded hill during the winter, their breath came out in fogged clouds as they took several steps into the surface of the snow in front of them. Once they had cleared the door it closed behind them, that and the steel wall the only unnatural things around them. "It's... beautiful." Brandon said in awe as he pulled the fur-lined hood tighter against his head to keep out the chill. "I almost can't believe we're still in a museum."

"Maybe we aren't, that could have been a time portal back into ancient times." Lark joked as he pressed his hand against a nearby tree. "I think these are all real, they really simulated what this placed looked like back in the ice age. This must have cost them a fortune to rec-" the wolf stopped dead as he felt something cold and wet smack against the side of his head, which caused him to turn and see a grinning human quickly hide behind a tree. "Hey!"

"What? Ken said we can do whatever we want." Brandon replied as he bent down to make another snowball. Lark laughed and quickly ducked down to avoid a second shot before he rolled up one of his own. Their fierce snowball fight continued for a while before Lark once again got hit in the face, which caused him to call a truce and waved him over. "What, claiming defeat already?"

"This snow... it tastes funny." Lark explained as he picked up a bit more of the white fluff and took another lick. "I think... I think it's bio-snow."

"Bio-snow?" Brandon replied. "You mean that stuff they disperse over disaster sites in order to help mass heal the wounded? Why on earth would they use that as snow, you'd think they'd just make the real thing to be more authentic."

Lark shrugged and brushed the rest of the snow out of his head fur. "C'mon, let's go exploring." He said simply. "Shame for them to build this whole place and we stay five feet in front of the entrance." Brandon nodded and put his crude gloves back on, which seemed to fit slightly better, as they walked deeper into the forest. As Lark put his hood back up neither male noticed his ears growing longer, nor the normally brown fur growing darker as they ventured forth...

**********************************************

The sun shined brightly overhead as the two continued to make their way through the woods, Brandon huffing slightly as they walked. While they had talked through most of their walk Lark began to grow quieter and quieter, until it felt like ages since the wolf said anything as he led the way through the woods. When they finally came across a sizable river Brandon was suddenly panged with thirst and said he needed a rest and a drink. Lark just stood and waited by his side as Brandon knelt near the water's edge and took off his mittens.

Just as he was about to put his hands into the water he stopped, his eyes widening slightly at his hands. His fingernails had turned a deep black and had begun to taper into points while his palms and insides of his fingers had puffed out. He reached down into the water to see if perhaps it was some sort of dirt that he may have picked up during the snowball fight but as he dipped his fingers into the liquid he saw and felt his nails grow into a wicked set of curved claws. By the time he brought them back out they had also grown a layer of wet fur, a dull brownish-orange on the tops with a bright white on the bottoms.

"Lark... my hands..." even though he felt his friend's presence next to him he heard nothing but a low growl, which forced Brandon to look away from his mutated hands. "Lark?" The human gasped as he looked up and saw the wolf's face for the first time. The canine's face looked... feral, his brown fur had turned a deep black and his ears were longer then he had ever seen. What struck out most though were his teeth, most specifically his canines that had grown out into a long pair of saber teeth though the rest of them had grown sharper as well.

"Drink." The wolf growled. Before Brandon could reply he suddenly felt a powerful, clawed hand against his neck and his entire head was shoved forward. Brandon thrashed as his head was completely submerged underneath the bio-snow tainted water. He found his mouth and nose filling with water as he struggled to hold his breath. Just as suddenly as Brandon was pushed in he found himself pulled back, gasping as he felt the cold air hit his exposed face. Water ran down his exposed back and chest as he pushed Lark away, who only grunted and crossed his arms.

Before Brandon could demand answers he felt his face throb powerfully, his transformed hands moving up to his face as the muscle and bone begin to shift. His face swelled outwards and his teeth began to sharpen, feeling his canines lengthen past his upper lip as whiskers pushed out from his cheeks. The flesh of his nose merged with the expanding muscle on his mouth until it formed into a proper muzzle which he experimentally opened and closed as it grew. Finally his skin itched as fur began to grow out on his entire face while the hair on his head grew out into a thick mane.

When the transformation finally subsided Brandon scrambled to his feet to look down at the surface of the water. His head looked like the ancient race of sabertooth tigers in his books, his face fierce and wild looking as his fingers graced the tips of his long, feline ears. The human's senses were overloaded with new sights, smells, sounds... his brain struggled to keep up with it as Lark merely stared down at him. Even when he managed to get his composure back he tried to comprehend what had happened to him, but even though he knew that it had to do with the bio-snow he couldn't summon his knowledge of genetics to explain it. It took him a while to realize that he had been sitting there with his mouth agape, his brain unable to comprehend information he had utilized several hours earlier.

"Feel better?" Lark asked simply.

"I feel... strange." Brandon managed to reply, unable to articulate any better than that. "My head... is fuzzy. I can't get my brain to remember things. What's wrong?"

"Don't know." Lark replied, sitting down next to him. "After fight my brain started fading from snow. As we walked my mind kept getting fuzzy, kept trying to think things and can't. Then I let go, things got better, smells and sounds got better. Live in moment mate, try it."

Brandon just looked at his friend in question, wondering how the wolf could take such a change in stride even as it got harder to remember things. He began to realize that his friend was right, the more he struggled against the changes the more anxious he began to get. Even simple math problems became a challenge, it was as if he knew the knowledge was there but he couldn't get access to it. As Brandon slowly got back to his feet he realized with decreased recognition that his brain had transformed as much as his face to something more primal in nature.

With his mental faculties diminishing Brandon found his clarity to his surroundings increased tenfold. He suddenly saw what Lark was talking about, as though his now amber eyes had been opened for him to see clearly. The two males stared at each other and they found themselves able to communicate with little need to speak anymore. A sudden snap of a nearby twig and the two creatures turned to see a deer walk into their range. They both licked their lips and around their long saber fangs, giving each other a look before they picked up their spears and began to stalk their prey.

******************************************

A small snowstorm had begun to pick up as the two dragged their kill behind them, tracking back towards a cave they had seen in one of the rocky ridges as they had hunted. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as they entered the cave the winds kicked up even more and made it near impossible to see further than a few feet in front of their faces. The opening went up and back several feet, far enough to keep the cold out as the sabre-wolf took some of the sticks they had gathered and began to set up a small fire near the entrance.

As the cave warmed to their body heat Brandon began to strip off his outer hides, partially because he had started to sweat but mostly because he wanted to see what he looked like. He could feel himself changing throughout the hunt but his instincts had taken point and he had remained focused on the prey. Now that they had made their kill though curiosity managed to finally bubble up through the haze of instincts and especially when he had thrown his spear and skewered their prey almost completely through. As he carefully laid his hides to dry and gotten down to his loincloth he heard a snort from the campfire, Lark leering at him with a toothy smirk that exposed his sharpened sharp teeth before he turned back to the fire and the meat he had just set on it to cook.

As the delicious smell of meet filled his feline nose Brandon placed his clawed hands against his stomach, or at least what had been his stomach. The bulge of fat that had deposited there over the years seemed to have melted away under the thick, tan-colored fur. Even as he watched he could see and feel his relatively underused abs plump up and grow, which also seemed to happen to his formerly undeveloped pectorals. Though it appeared he was still developing he had already reached a rather athletic state that would have mirrored the body type of a survivor of ancient times. Trying to think of such comparisons made his head hurt though and he instead focused more on the delicious meal that his packmate had cooked for them, as he walked over to the fire he found that Lark had followed suit and taken off his clothes to reveal the toned physique of a top predator.

It didn't take too long for the two to devour their meal, the meat disappearing as quickly as it cooked as the juices dribbled down their chins and onto their bodies. When they were done they went slightly out of the cave and washed each other in the snow, playing and rubbing it into their fur to clean it before they got out of the cold and back to the warmth of the fire. With their hunger satiated and fur dried by the heat of the fire Brandon's instincts began to drift into a different direction, the same as his eyes as his gaze slowly made their way down the saberwolf's body and to his groin. Much to his surprise when he got to the tanned loincloth it had sported a sizable tent, and when he looked back up Lark had a similar predatory look as before, only this one was heavy with lust as he took a clawed finger and undid the strap that held the strained material together.

Though he had never thought of his friend in that way before it seemed like only something natural now to his new, more primitive thought processes. The two of them had satiated their needs for shelter and food together, why not this one? It appeared that Lark had the same idea as well, as soon as he was freed from the troublesome garment he slinked over until he had crawled on top of Brannon's feline body. The sabrewolf didn't even hesitate as their muzzles met in a kiss that both eagerly indulged in. Brannon felt himself get pushed all the way onto his back as their tongues danced around each other, the howl of the storm and the crackle of the fire the only sounds besides their embrace.

As the sabretooth tiger felt the other male's body begin to settle on top of him he could feel his own loincloth get undone and brushed aside. As Brannon felt his packmate's maleness press underneath his own his eyes suddenly snapped open and he let out a low growl. Something in his primitive brain clicked and he realized that the wolf wanted to be the one who dominated him! It was made clear as he tried to move and suddenly felt his shoulders pinned to the solid stone floor and their kiss broken, Lark looking down at him with a lustful, dominating look. Even though he was at a disadvantage it didn't stop Brannon from an escape attempt, his hands pushed roughly against Lark's elbows before he delivered a hard shove to his chest.

The surprised sabrewolf tumbled backwards and the feline leapt forward, the muscles strained and bulged against each other as they wrestled for dominance. It wasn't mean-spirited, despite the growls and physical pushing back and forth it was more like a game, a game which heavily aroused the two males as they rolled around on the floor. After a while they both panted from exertion and pleasure as they each spent a few seconds on their back or stomach only to wiggle free before the other could get a hold on them. At one point Brannon appeared to win and even began to lube himself up with his own saliva, but before he could completely coat his tool with the thicker fluid he was tossed on his side.

Brannon rolled on his back to kick himself back up but before he could bring his foot down a strong, meaty hand grabbed onto his ankle and held it in mid-air. He found his other leg soon followed suit and he grunted as his legs were spread open wide. Before the tiger could do anything his friend had already pounced in, their thickly furred muscles rubbing against one another as Lark went in for the kill. Brannon let out a gasp and his eyes widened in shock as the rather large, tapered tool pushed into him. There was a few momentary twinges of pain before his muscles instinctively relaxed and allowed the canine to slide in even deeper. He knew there was no use fighting now, the sabrewolf had dominated him and could now use his body as he pleased, something the other male seemed more than willing to do.

While Brannon had never personally experienced his friend's method of lovemaking he had heard rumors that he was a rather slow and steady lover. As he continued to feel his insides get spread open by the advancing inches of the canine cock within him he felt this was anything but. Lark growled deeply, a trail of spit running from his bared teeth as he hilted Brannon, whose claws dug deep furrows into the ground while his own cock throbbed between them. As Lark began to thrust into him it was a deep, passionate, primal rutting, neither male able to control themselves as the sabertooth tiger felt himself get pushed backwards slightly with each thrust.

Even though Brannon had sex before it was nothing like what he experienced now, not only did his enhanced senses stimulate him more than ever but his primitive mind could only focus on one thing. His usually cluttered mind was completely free to experience the pure passion between them, every muscle that flexed, and every push that seemed to go deeper inside him. All he was and ever could be was between his legs right at that moment, both of them lost in a sea of bliss as they fucked.

Suddenly Lark let out a loud howl and Brannon felt the cock inside him throb hard before it began to fill him with hot seed. The sabrewolf clamped down hard on the tiger's body as he came hard, both creatures twitched and writhed as the dominant male came to orgasm. Their bodies heaved with breath as they basked in their climax, both of them holding each other until finally Lark slowly backed out. Like the plug out of a bathtub as soon as the softening flesh of the canine's rod pulled out he felt several dribbles of liquid leak out of his loosened hole. Brannon just sighed contently before they kissed once more, this time much softer than their needy initial embrace before Lark broke it off and leaned back.

Brannon was about to get up when he was suddenly pushed on his back once more, Lark leering at him before he put his hand around the fleshy spire that was the sabretooth tiger's still rock hard erection. The canine swung his legs around until they were face to face and Brannon could feel a cum-slicked hand grab him and guide the tip of his cock forward. Both sabertoothed males grinned and growled lustfully, the wolf's hips slowly slid down onto the pole of flesh as they both let out a loud groan.

Meanwhile, hidden in one of the walls disguised as part of the fabricated sky, several scientists watched on the monitor as the two males continued to copulate. "It appears that your hypothesis is correct Dr. Cole." A lizard researcher said as he sipped his coffee. "With the right genetic emulsifiers in the bio-snow and the proper setting we can reactivate the ancient genes that sleep within us. It also appears they have no concept of time, sleeping even though they've been in there for about two hours now."

"Oh yes, I can only imagine the data we'll glean about our ancestors, these two alone have shown that gender was no issue when it came to fulfilling one's... primal needs." The raptor said with a chuckle, which caused the others to do so as well. "They should be awake relatively soon, make sure the storm is over by then and guide them over to our 'predators' area and see if we can get a flight or fight response from them. Just make sure they don't damage anything, those robotics cost an arm and a leg to get right and I don't want one of them to put a spear through something on the first day other than the special 'prey' we put out there for them to hunt."

As the scientists and engineers began to bustle about with the duties they were given Ken's eyes lingered on the screen for a little longer. The raptor pressed a hand on the screen, eagerly wishing that he was there with them. No one knew that prehistoric studies had not only been his passion but also something he lusted after, his mind thinking back to the days he would wonder around the museum and fantasize about such a simpler time. Now he was a victim of his own success, even though he had created a world where his dreams would come true he was stuck watching them from afar... at least for now.

"So sir... what are we going to do with them once we get them out?" One of the scientists asked, which prompted the raptor to dart back and look at them.

"Get them a pair of volunteer forms." Ken replied with a grin. "Once they have the competency to sign them I think they'll be more than willing to be part of our 'living exhibit'."
