Just a fun story, that is going to turn into a novel i hope. I welcome comments on how others might wanna see it progress.

In a flash, everything changed. The world I once knew and loved, was no more, everything turned to either ash, or mutated beyond recognition. The burden borne of one who survives the nuclear fallout, is immense. With a heavy heart, and a distracted mind, I set off to see what has become of my world.

Chapter 1

Emergence

Emerging from the cryo chamber, I squint at the bright sun whose heat bakes the wasteland thoroughly and ensures that anything that survives day to day is immensely strong. I find out quickly, that we are no longer at the top of the food chain, my claws and fangs may be sharp, but against a cockroach that's as big as a Saint Bernard, they are all but useless. Realizing this, I quickly determine that I need to have some weapons. With this in mind, I set out to find the nearest town, having no idea what may await me on my journey, or how long it will take me. I had remembered some of my survival techniques that I had learned over the years, and felt somewhat confident that I would be able to survive.

At first, I was afraid I would die just from the radioactive air that I was sure was present after the end times. Surprisingly however, The air was still good to breathe, only somewhat tainted, I guessed that most of the rainforests, and other tree life, must've survived enough to keep the ozone in tact.

Surviving in the wastes, is not an easy task. Everything that's alive wants to kill you, from the great mutated wolves, and bears, all the way down to the small gnats, that swarm around your head and attempt to eat your face off of your skull. The plant life that was present, was stunted, and not plentiful. Life was tough in the wastes, but not impossible... Along my journey, I spotted a few places where it looked like someone or something had attempted to make a small settlement, but it was long since deserted, and held no help for me in my travels. The first night was a rough one, I was unaware of how cold it gets out in the wastes, with all the damage done to the ground, stumbling around, I managed to locate an upturned skeleton of a car to hide in, although, without any windows or doors, it was scarcely what one might call a "nice" shelter.

The next few days of travel proved uneventful, although I managed to kill a sizable mutated buck, and cooked it almost to the point of burning, just to take out as many mutagens as possible. The deer tasted horrible, so much so, that I could barely stomach enough to keep me from starving. The next day, I fully realized how bad things were in the wastes, when I came upon a feeding frenzy involving a carcass of what looked like a humanoid monster, being fed upon by a pack of smaller, wiry, dark skinned creatures who feasted like a pack of piranha. I stayed out of sight, hiding behind a stubby bush to watch the scene with interest and disgust, but something tipped the pack off, and they scattered, I had thought it was maybe my scent being carried on the wind, but I realized that the wind was blowing across me, not toward them. I stepped out from behind the bush to take a look at the carcass that remained, a few seconds later, I heard an earth shattering roar, which caused the blood in my veins to freeze...

Looking towards the source of the roar, I spot on the reddish horizon, the biggest bear I have ever laid eyes upon. On all fours, it stood at least six feet tall, about seven feet long, and when it stood up, my tail tucked between my legs involuntarily and I let out a soft whimper, for I could see how massive each arm was, and attached to each of the meaty limbs, a paw, the size of a filing cabinet drawer. I stood stock still, hoping it wouldn't notice me, but the pale green eyes were locked on me and me alone, and its lip lifted into a snarl that revealed his fangs, which happen to look like a couple of .50 Caliber rifle rounds. Needless to say, it scared the ever living crap out of me, and I was suddenly aware of how exposed and unarmed I was out here. With a great sigh and a huff, the beast started to lumber toward me, its gait reminding me of a Silver-back Gorilla that is defending his territory, a slight sway with each step, and one hell of a menacing snarl.

My body froze, unwilling to move an inch while my mind on the other hand was racing a million miles a second, trying to figure out what to do next and how to escape with my life. The bear was only about a hundred yards away from me now, and I could see that my earlier fear of how big it was paled in comparison to the new fear as I saw how it kept getting bigger while it closed the distance from us, apparently, it didn't feel the need to sprint after me for it just kept coming using its lumbering terrifying gait. Twenty-five yards away from me it stood, towering up like a massive redwood tree as it gauged me, I was still frozen in place, frantically trying to figure something out to live. A glance to my right saw the corpse that the earlier beasts were feeding on, and I noticed, to my relief and horror, a small shank of steel, about the length of a pencil and only about twice as wide. I grabbed it, feeling dread as I thought of what I could do to kill the bear with the tiny shiv, finally deciding to rush it and maybe get the steel into the bears eye, I charge, throwing out a howl and a snarl as I pounded toward the towering beast... 7 feet away from it, it let out a bellow that actually caused me to flinch and halt for a moment, then the bear crashed down to the ground, face first, emitting a huge plume of dust when it landed hard. After the dust settled, I saw what looked to be an arrow, made out of a leg bone from some animal sticking out of the base of the bears head, where its neck connected to the brain, I searched around behind it and saw, just barely visible on the horizon was a creature, standing upright on two legs, and holding a bow........
