Chapter twenty seven

I got back to her room just in time to find her getting out of bed stiffly, she looked back at me when she heard the door close and smiled.

"I see you went to wash up this morning" she looked me over before speaking again, "Did you get any sleep last night?".

I walked over to the desk and started putting my tools away before i spoke, "no i did not, i was up all night getting the nullifiers in order so i could test them this morning".

I could feel her watching me as i put everything back, when i was done i walked back over to the desk and picked up the string of six that i had left there. She looked at them as i put them over my shoulder, "what did you do to those?" she asked as she got out of bed and started walking around.

I watched her go threw her morning ritual before answering her, "I did some small modifications to them, not as much as i would have liked but it will do for the time being"

By this point she was brushing her tail fur with a brush from her vanity, "so then they are almost ready?".

I nodded to her and watched her get up after she was done, "i need only to have you test them with me before i can be sure that they work"

She walked over to me and held out her hand while looking at me, i glanced from her hand to her face waiting for her to explain.

She raised an eyebrow at me before speaking, "well are you going to give them to me so we can test them or what?" she asked.

I pushed her hand away gently before i spoke again, "It is to dangerous for you to test them female, instead i will do it and you will help me"

after i told her this i headed for the door and walked out into the hall glancing back to make sure she was following me, i lead her threw the palace until we came to the sparing rings again.

I made my way to the center of the ring dropping the string of null disks at the side of the ring as i did, serinity stopped at the edge of the ring by the disks and looked at me as i pulled the two i had modified for her out and clipped them to my belt and looked at her.

"Chad....what do you want me to do, i'm not sure i understand" she said hesitently as she took a step into the ring.

I watched as she walked closer then i held out my hand and stopped her, "the point of us coming out here is so i can test wether or not the changes i made will work and what the range is"

I saw the wheels start to turn as she tried to put things together then her eyes grew wide as she figured it out, "you've got to be insane Chad i can't attack you!" she said in a high voice.

I tilted my head at her before i spoke again, "yes you can it is not like you will hurt me seriously and there are healers here that can take care of any wounds i take if this does not work"

She shook her head and looked at me horrified, "you can't be serious" she said still disbelieving me.

"But i am female, i need you to attack me so i know what to expect"

She looked at me in disbelieving horror and shook her head, "why don't you let me or one of the soldier do this Chad?!"

I looked down at the ground and sighed out of frustration, "look female you are the child of a very powerful and promanent family one of these days something is going to happen and your parents are not going to be their to protect you"

"Protect me.....who says i need protecting!" she said.

I smiled to myself when i saw anger flash across her face, "I do female, you are to soft when it comes to some things and you use your parents power to protect you"

Serinity started to growl at me and raised her hand, i saw her extend her claws and glare at me.

"You take that back!"

"No" i said as i readied myself for the inevitable attack.

"You bastard i said take it back!"

*One more push and she'll do it*

"Why did i strick a nerve female or am i right, you know i'm willing to bet that when the taomons flunkies captured you it wasn't because they were too strong it was because you were to weak"

Serinity howled her rage at me and lept, she slashed at me with her claws in her fit of rage but i dodge it easily and got behind her.

"Good but i don't need physical attacks i need you to hit me with your special attack"

She turned to me and i saw the rage in her eyes as she did, most people would be quaking with fear at the sight of an inraged renamon but for my purposes it was exactly what i needed.

"Fine you want an attack shifter!, here it is!"

She jumped into the air and crossed her arms in front of her chest, "Diamond storm!"

I watched as the energy gathered around her and formed into glittering shards of light, she threw her arms out and the shards flew forward directly at me.

I watched them fly through the air and crossed my arms in front of me then called out the command word, "Pulse".

The shard seemed to impact on something less than a foot infront of my face but did nothing to the barrier that had been created.

I smiled as the smoke cleared and i laid eye on the horrified face of Serinity as she looked at me, she looked like she wanted to cry but she just stood their looking at me.

I straightend up and let my hands drop to my side as i walked over to her, "very good female now we know that they work we just need to find out how long it can standup to an attack"

I was looking around to see if i could spot a different digimon when i heard Serinity speak, "Chad....I"

I looked at her trying to figure out what she wanted.

"I'm sorry for what i said just now"

I raised an eyebrow, "what are you talking about female.....ah you mean when you called me a shifter"

Serinity looked at the ground and nodded.

"forget it"

her head snapped up and she looked at me like i was nuts, "what?"

"I said forget it, it's not like being called a shifter is anything new to me besides it is what i am"

She was still looking at me when i heard something behind me and i turned around, i saw Se'nara walking towards us in the distance so i walked over to her before she got to the ring.

"Se'nara i wish to speak with you"

She walked up to me and tilted her head, "What do you need shifter"

"It would seem that the female is to soft hearted for a battle with me and i still need to do some testing on something so i am asking for you help"

Se'nara studied me for a minute then glanced over to Serinity, "she always has been a little on the gentle side for my taste but that is part of who she is"

"Indeed Se'nara and i think the fact that that i prodded her into attack me is going to trouble her for a while, however i would like your assistance in the matter at hand"

Se'nara huffed at me, "very well shifter tell me what you need"

"I want you to attack me"

"What!" she said in wide eyed astonishment.

"I need to test the streangth of a barrier i created from the nullifiers i got back from that Datamon you gave them to so i need you to battle with me"

She narrowed her eyes at me and spoke, "have you gone off the edge shifter if i attack you then you could very well die"

I studied her for a moment before replying, "the only ones who can tell you what the edge looks like Se'nara are the ones who have alredy gone over, i however am completely sane so if you don't mind i would like you to step into the ring and do what you need to get ready"

We stood their studying each other for a minute before she finally huffed at me and walked past, "you really are insane shifter but if you really wish this then so be it".

I turned and followed her as she walked over to the ring and dropped off my belt and hooked the disks onto my clothes then we split and took up positions at opposite ends of the ring, i bowed to Se'nara the looked at her as she was coming up from her own bow.

"Se'nara general of the forces of the kitsune palace i hereby challange you to a test of streangth.....do you except this challange?"

I heard serinity gasp off to my left but didn't look at her as i waited for Se'nara to answer.

"I hereby except your challange shifter what are your terms of combat?"

"You are forbiden to restrain yourself in combat for the safety of our charge, the match will end when i am satisfied that what i have created will be enough to protect her against atleast some attacks by a higher level digimon.....are these terms exceptable to you?"

Se'nara bowed to me in reply and crouched down, "let us begin shifter"

I nodded and took up a defensive stance, "remember Se'nara this is a formal challange so do not hold back until the match ends otherwise the females safety will be in question"

*Now that the formalities are out of the way i can really test the modifacations*

We charged at each other across the ring and met in the middle with quick slashes and clashing attacks then jumped away from each other, *she's better than i expected*

We circled and watched each other waiting for the next move to be made, finally i charged forward and struck out with my right hand as my claws extended to there full five inch length.

my attack was stopped by the flash of teeth and the swipe of claws, i saw sparks flare when our attacks connected and jumped back looking at Se'nara.

*she really is good.....this could get interesting, so lets have some fun*, i let a smile crawl over my lips as i looked at her and saw her do the same.

*So i'm not the only one that finds this enjoyable....heh...fine then lets take this to the next level and stop messing around*

I held up my left hand and let my nails extend to there full length to show her i was going to get serious and she bared her teeth at me and growled, "good your going to get serious, i was hoping i wouldn't be bored during this fight"

Still smiling i leand down low and shot forward letting my claws scrape across the ground and kick up sparks as i charged, i saw her bolt forward as well and calculated a proper plan of attack.

just as we were about to meet i pushed off the ground and lept into the air, i saw Se'nara take a swing at where i had been before she looked around to find me. *I'm up here Se'nara can you find me?*, i thought as i angled my descent head first at her and splayed my claws out.

As i got closer to her i saw her stiffen and look up and i thrust forward with my right hand, i hit only the ground as my claws bit into stone sending out a shower of sparks and making long gouges in the sparing ring.

I used my momentum and pushed off the ground into a flip twisting as i did, the world spun around me and i saw Se'nara flash by, i came out of the spinflip and landed looking at her with a smile on my face.

"This is most intertaining Se'nara what say we have some fun for a while before we end this, it has been far to long since i have had a descent opponant"

She grinned back at me flashing her teeth, "indeed shifter lets"

chapter twenty eight

We battled for hours in the ring testing and clashing trying to find a weakness in each others defense as we attacked each other, by this time the ring was pock marked with craters and scorch marks from my claws and Se'nara's weaker attack the fox tail inferno.

A crowd of renamon and one or two leomon had also gathered to watch us as we battled letting out cheers and boo's alike as we struck at each other, finally we clashed again and i blocked her attack then kicked out and hit her in the chest and pushed off into a backflip before landing on the ground some distance from her.

My clothes were battered and torn and even burnt in some places i also had many bruises and cuts on my body and i was sweating heavily and breathing hard, i checked Se'nara over and saw the various cuts and claw marks i had given her and noted that her fur was matted to her body with blood and sweat which only showed off the rippling muscles beneath her skin as she moved.

We stood their panting and looking at each other for a few minutes before i finally spoke, "Se'nara...huff, huff....as enjoyable as this has been i think we should end it with one final attack"

Se'nara nodded to me, "very well shifter but i will not hold back just so you know and i wish you luck in surviving"

"I don't need luck Se'nara so lets get this over with", i said as i jumped high into the air and made as if to attack.

Se'nara jumped into the air after me and we clashed again, the force of her attack sent me higher into the air and i saw her started to flip end over end.

Blue flames sprouted from her body and engulfed her in a massive fireball as she called out the name of her attack.

"Dragon Wheel!"

*This is it!, this is the moment of truth will the barrier hold or will i die and fade into oblivion*, suddenly i heard serinity's voice echo from somewhere deep in my mind.

*Think for a minute about the people you would leave behind if you died, what would they say or think or ask yourself how they would even feel at learning of your lose of life*

A face formed in the flames as i flew threw the air and a large body pulled away from the fireball, it looked at me hungrily and lunged forward opening it's massive jaws.

I could almost hear the roar of some savage beast screaming at me as the flames came closer then i heard Serinity's voice rise above the crowd in a scream.

"No!"

something made me react when i heard her call out and i crossed my arms in front of me and called out the command word.

"Pulse!", the flaming dragon crashed around me blocking out everything around but the glow of its flames and the heat and roar of the fire, i looked in front of me and saw the flames dancing over the barrier like liquid as it flowed around me.

*What was that just now?* i thought to myself as i watched the flames dance around me trying to find their way into the barrier, suddenly i saw the air in front of me crack like someone has chipped a piece of glass and was slowly pushing on it.

*The barrier works but with the streangth of this attack it won't last much longer.....*

Just then my ears where greeted by the sound of shattering glass as the barriers finally gave way to the power of the attack that was assualting it, i was hit by a massive wave of heat that pushed me back farther into the air.

The flames danced around me caressing my skin and burning away parts of the clothes i way wearing and warning signs flashed up on the hollow display to fast for me to tell what they were saying, *is this how i'm going to die?*.

Suddenly the flames stopped and faded away around me and i saw Se'nara on the ground looking at me along with everybody else who had come to watch the fight, i started to fall threw the air towards the ground. I tried to move my body so i could land on feet but the force of the attack had drained me and my body wouldn't respond to my commands, I watched as the ground rushed up to meet me and waited for the impact that would most likely end my life the way i was falling.

I closed my eyes when i was about twent feet from the ground and smiled to myself as i counted down to my fate.

I heard gasps in the wind as it rushed by.

4..

Someone was screaming something.

The wind rushed by me as i waited

2..

I heard someone call out my name but i didn't open my eye's to look.

1..

I felt something warm wrap around me and i stopped falling, i slowly opened my eyes to find Serinity crying and staring down at me with a strange look on her face.

"You insinsitive bastard do you realize how stupid, reckless, and dangerous that was?!", she sniffled as she looked me in the eyes.

I felt something wet hit my cheek and reached up to wipe it away, i looked down at my finger only to find a drop of water hanging from my nail.

I brought the drop to my mouth and licked it to find it tasted salty on my tongue, *this is a tear...* i looked back up at Serinity as another drop landed on my cheek *is she crying.....for me?*

"Stop it"

I saw suprise come across her face as i said this, "how many times do i have to tell you female this is the life of a shifter, as long as i am alive it is my job to protect you from harm until i die or your parents tell me my services are no longer needed"

"That means taking risks that put my life in danger like this just as i would if i were fighting any enemy that threatens you"

To my suprise serinity smiled at me threw her tears, "your something else Chad you know that?"

I tilted my head to the side and continued to look at her as i spoke, "of course female i am after all a shifter"

I pushed myself up off the ground and looked around as i stood up, The crowd around us suddenly burst into cheers as i laid eyes on Se'nara who was slowly walking over to us.

"I'm suprised shifter, not many have been able to survive my full attack" she said as she stopped in front of me looking me over.

I looked down at my mangled and still smoking clothes and pulled the null disks off me to look them over, after i was satisfied that they were ok i looked back at her.

"I told you Se'nara i do not need luck however it would seem that i am going to need some new vestments"

Se'nara chuckled, "I must thank you shifter it has been some time since i have been tested like that, it was.....thrilling to say the least"

I nodded to her and noticed the crowd starting to break up, "and for me as well general however if you don't mind i would like to return to the training i was giving the female"

Se'nara nodded to me, "very well shifter but i would advise you against upsetting the princess again so no more having her attack you on purpose"

"Very well no special attacks only sparing" i told her as i watched her turn away and walk out of the ring._______________________________________________________________

chapter twenty nine

For the rest of the day i ran serinity threw the paces of fighting with the new tech, she came up with several uses for the null field that i hadn't thought about as i trained her.

By the end of the day i was in the ring with her and we were sparing at a pace that would have made others think twice about messing with us, we were both sweating and breathing hard as dusk came.

Finally i got the upper hand when she slipped on some loose stone and i pounced on her, she let out a small yelp when she saw my claws stop inches from her face but she turned to me.

"Alright Chad i give you win", i almost didn't hear her because as soon as i got close i was hit by the scent of her heat.

"Chad?....shadow!", i snapped out of my daze when i heard her call me by my code name.

I got up and grabbed serinity's hand and pulled her off the ground, "I'm sorry female, i was....distracted"

She looked at the ground for a minute before looking back at me, "you know it is nice to know that at one time you weren't always like this"

I tilted my head at her, "explain female"

She just smiled at me, "Its nothing Chad come we should go wash up, the guest have been arriving all day and tonight we will have to greet them. And i want you to be on your best behavior while we do ok?"

"I do not understand female, i am only preforming to the dictates of your parents request to protect you"

She smiled back at me as we started walking, "just do me a favor and stay close to me tongiht and don't say anything to the guests"

I raised and eyebrow and looked at her before finally agreeing, "very well, however i do not understand the request".

I followed her threw the palace till we finally got back to the hotsprings, Serinity lead the way until we got to the same one we had used earlier and slipped in. I noticed that their were two buckets again and looked questioningly at her, she nodded to me and i started getting undressed like the first time i had bathed with her.

I held the towel around me as i got into the water and sat down next to her, "You did well today female"

She smiled and stared at the water, "thank you Chad"

I saw her look at me from the corner of my eye but i didn't move, She seemed to study me for a while as she sat there.

"Chad....can i ask you a question?"

i turned to look at her, "what do you want to ask"

She hesitated for a moment but finally sighed, "you know that i'm in heat don't you"

"Yes"

"That's why you have been acting strangely around me isn't it?"

I studied her for a minute, "if you mean why i have been trying keeping a distance of atleast five feet between us then yes"

"I may have been told to stay as close as possible to you but i am still part digimon and because of that i am effected by things like a female going into heat, It is very rare for me to come into contact with a female who is and the fact of the matter still remains that even if i was effected by it i am never allowed to mate with any of them"

She studied me for a minute, "are they afraid of you getting them pregnant?".

I shrugged my shoulders and sank into the water, "I don't know if i even can, most of the time i only mate with human females known as goths, they are very strange females that gather at a club that allows shifters in it not far from where i use to have my old base"

"How did that work out?"

"It didn't....for a time one of them stayed with me and i rutted with her for a while, i did it to find out if she would get pregnant or not however the expirement failed when after six months of rutting she showed no signs of getting pregnant".

Serinity's voice changed but i ignored it, "what would you have done if she had gotten pregnant?"

I thought about that before answering, "i probably would have made her get an abortion"

"What is....abortion?"

"An abortion is when a pregnant female go's to a docter and has the pregnancy terminated because they don't want the child"

I heard her inhale sharply, "You would have killed your own offspring before it even had a chance?!"

"Yes" i told her as i looked up at the sky and leaned back against the edge of the pool.

"Why!"

"Because the simple fact of the matter is that i will not bring a child into this world, i can not allow something like that to happen....besides i don't know of any shifters ever having children and not hearing about the whole family getting killed before the child ever got born so i don't know what it would look like or wether it would be a full digimon, human or something else".

"So did you ever think that the human might have been unable to be with child?"

I nodded but still didn't look at her, "yes...i took a sample from her and had my associate take a look at it before i did anything and he told me she was fine, i on the other hand am unable to impregnate humans and i know that even if a female digimon ever goes into heat around me they would never want to bare a shifter child".

"But you do have sex with digimon don't you?"

I turned to look at her a bit suprised at her bluntness, "yes i have rutted with digimon females before, why do you ask?"

she looked away from me and back at the water, "no reason really..."

I washed up in the pool and sat back down to let a servent wash my hair and back when serinity spoke again, "you told me that you have an arrangement with your supplier lady devimon for discounts on your things.....have you ever gotten her pregnant?"

"Not to my knowledge, however the rate at which humans and digimon give birth is different but i know for a fact that lady devimon is able to keep from getting pregnant until she chooses to. I doubt however that she would ever do something so bad for business, anyway i don't think that she would even allow it"

"And why not?"

"Because to her i am nothing but a source of income and a plaything for her satisfaction, most people and digimon don't even think of shifters as normal beings becuase of the way we look so they rarely ever associate with us unless it is for things like going threw the walls or hiring mercs like me"

The servents finished and left us alone, serinity leand into me and lay her head on my shoulder suprising me abit, i did nothing to push her off as we sat their.

"Chad......why is it you never call me by my name?"

I thought about that for a second, "it is to avoid any kind of attachment that might form, most shifters try to think of themselves as human but that is their mistake. I on the other hand do not so i do what i can during missions to avoid the possibility of becoming attached to anyone, it removes the possibilty of doing something irrational and causing the mission to fail"

I paused for a minute before continuing, "also that name was given to you by your parents and i have no right to use it even if i wanted to"

"And what if i told you i wanted you to?" she said quietly.

"Is that an order?"

"Do i have to make it one if it means you'll say my name?"

"If that is your wish"

"Then from now on when we are alone i order you to address me only by my name"

"very well"

Slowly she pulled away from me and i had the strange urge to tell her not to but i crushed it down as she looked at me, "say it now...please"

I looked at her and saw a look of need on her face and insistance in her voice, i studied her for a minute and thought about it. *if it means that much to her i guess it would be alright*

I felt my mouth grow dry as i readied myself for what i was about to do, "S...S...Serinity" i let the word roll off of my tongue slowly as if testing it for poison but the smile she gave me told me she like it and she put her head back on my shoulder.

We sat like that for a while until i asked her a question, "female....Serinity.....how long is your heat going to last?"

She did not move like i thought she would, instead she just sat their. "It varies from one female to another, for some it only lasts a couple of days while for others it could last for as long as three weeks"

"Is this your first heat?"

I felt her stiffen against me but she didn't move, "yes it is....it was not to long ago that i was a viximon, however after i changed i asked my mother about what i could expect and she warned me that when i went into my first heat it would be hard to control my urges"

"Did she also tell you that the scent of heat would send most male digimon into a frenzy of need to mate with you?"

She nodded slightly, "yes she did, i use some special herbs to cover the scent and dull the urges but sometimes even they cannot help completely, That's partially why i asked my parents to have you hired as my protector"

"Because i went into heat the night we got back to kitsune village"

"So i am not only protecting your body from harm i am also protecting your virtue from other male digimon" i said as i looked off into the distants.

I felt serinity wrap her arms around my left one but i didn't move, "Chad.....will you stay with me tongiht?"

*That's an odd question*

"Of course, my job is to protect you so i will be staying in your room like i have been"

She seemed to slump futher down into the water but said nothing in response to my words, again we sat in silence.

Finally after some time Serinity straightend back up and turned looking me in the face, "Chad....what was your life like before?"

I looked down at her for a second before speaking, "what do you mean before?"

She seemed to think about this for a minute then spoke again, "when i look at you...you're cold, calm, calculated and empty, but when you play i hear so much pain in your music that it makes me want to comfort you....what could have happened to you that would make you do this to yourself?"

I thought about my life growing up as i stared at her then turned to look at the surface of the water before i finally spoke, "my life....was....sporatic at best....i was constantly fighting anyone who would stand before me, i even put myself willingly into the tournaments day after day and city after city"

I could hear the sadness in her voice as she spoke again, "why would you do that to yourself?"

I was still looking at the water as the memories flashed through my mind, "i suffered from constant blackouts that lasted for days at a time, at the time i thought that if i put myself through that and wore my body down to the point of being unable to move before i went to sleep it wouldn't happen"

I felt Serinity tighten her grip as i continued, "for a while it worked and, but as time went on it started again. Only it seemed to get worse like something was trying to make up for lost time, and i couldn't stop it. I even went so far as to lock myself in a room surrounded by nullifiers but nothing seemed to help, eventually i was turned onto number by my contact so i looked into it and when i finally got some i found i was able to go to sleep without waking up in a different place so i keep using it so what ever caused it wouldn't trigger it again"

for a while after i stopped talking i felt her hug my arm tightly as if she was trying to comfort me with that small gesture, we sat like that for some time letting the water soak our bodies before she sighed heavily and let go of me then stood up, "we should get ready to greet my parents guests"

we got out of the pool and dried off and i waited with towel around my waist while she was brushed down and dried by some servents, i didn't bother tieing my hair back this time because the ribbon serinity had given me had been lost when i was hit by Se'nara's attack.

To my suprise however after she was done getting ready she pulled out the ribbon from her guantlets and walked over to me, "i saved this for you after it fell out of your hair"

I let her tie my hair back in a ponytail and turned to look at her, "thank you....i think".

she looked me in the face and nodded then smiled at me, "thats better".

We walked back to the front of the hotsprings and i was given my normal clothes, i went behind the screen i had used before and got dressed as i did i noted the fact that my shirt had been mended by one of the servents. I finished getting dressed and walked out from behind the screen and took up my post behind serinity as she lead the way back to her room.
