Chapter Three

  • * * Once again there were rays of light cascading upon the heavy fog of the morning and the cool chill left over from the night‘s air nipped at her body. A typical awakening for Kailas, save for the pain. Oh, it was intense. Her body burned and she gasped for air, trying desperately to slow her swiftly speeding heart. She knew the sensation, one that told her she had been running, full speed, towards who knew what end. It as only one of many pains to be discovered. Her womanhood was still wet and throbbed with the intensity of the night. Her breast had massive gaping holes pressed all about it in the form of..yes, most certainly someone had bit her breast. Someone. The thought made her heart seize; someone, not something! For the love of God, what had she done? If those signs weren't enough the scent of the man on her told her well enough what had happened. It was revolting just how much she smelled like some male, some..canine, as far as she could tell. It was only after getting up, stretching, and feeling every ache in her muscle that she thought of what exactly this could mean. Waking in the morning after running for a good long while, then finding the scent of this male on her. He could very well still be out there following that scent! And she had obviously wanted to get away from him for some reason or another. She sure as hell didn't want to stick around and find out. In a flash she was moving despite how much her body screamed for her to stop. Every muscle ached as she moved and stumbled across the terrain on shaky legs. Luck was upon her again for she found the scent of her own urine not too shortly after, the inevitable trail now clearly marked to her. Kai even found she didn't need the trail after a moment of getting her surroundings. Yes, she knew the place all too well. It was next to one of her larger cabins, one that she found she woke up nearby frequently. A preferred part of the forest for her Were side, but God only knew why it was so. She kept low to the bushes, carefully peaking about before once again making a run for the door. She slammed the door shut with relief. It was an odd sensation to love the feeling of a building around her. The wilderness reminded her too much of her wild nights and four walls around her brought some modicum of comfort. She moved further inside with a stronger ease taking in the darkened home that lightened with every passing moment. The window let gold rays of light spill across the floor- The window! It was only with a second glance that she noticed the broken wooden framework and the glass shattered all across the floor. Her senses were on alert again as she slowly took in the room. Not a muscle was moved, a sound made as she stood with fists ready, awaiting an attack. But time passed with not a sound. Ten minutes, twenty, then thirty. She ticked away the time in her head before she slowly, carefully made her way forward. To her right was the wall of the bathroom that cut off her view to the bedroom. As she turned the corner she noticed both doors flung wide open with scratch marks on them, a sight that made her inwardly sigh. It was very possible she had broken in here last night, but there was no sense in being too care free. She carefully inspected both rooms as she came to them. The bathroom was empty, clear signs of herself present with the tossed around shampoo and conditioner bottles, not to mention the torn up shower curtain. It was the bedroom that was the real surprise to her. Torn up sheets and blankets, no big deal. But the scent! It hit her in a sudden wave the moment she moved into the doorway, overwhelming her again as it had when she first awoke. It didn't take her long to locate a wet spot in the corner where a male had pissed. Going by how it matched the scent on her she was willing to bet it was the same male as well. Thoughts continued to bubble in her mind as she desperately tried to remember the night. She was angry, he was winning..dominance, yes. There was a fight over who was the dominant one. The fuzzy thoughts rested just at the edge of her mind, barely eluding her each time she tried to grasp at them. With a sigh she finally gave up, deciding to try and piece it all together by evidence. A cabin baring the scent of a male that was obviously on her. The cabin was torn up as if she had been here during the night. She woke not ten minutes from the place. For some reason they had decided to do their dirty deeds in the cabin instead of outside. She grimaced at the thought, figuring that the only way that might be is if he forced her in here. It would also explain all of the wounds and the aching. With an irritated sigh she reached for the phone and jammed in the only number she ever called; her office. "Lina, I'm taking some time off. At least three days, maybe even five," Kailas hadn't even given her secretary the chance to get out the usual greeting before she broke in. "But Ms. Kailas, the takeover-" "The takeover will either wait or the opportunity will disappear, I don't really give a shit!" Kailas yelled in a way she hadn't in years, with such force that she startled herself. Trembling fingers pressed against her forehead as she tried to gather her emotions and push them away. She took a deep, relaxing breath before she calmly resumed, "I'm sorry Lina, things are...I'm having some personal issues I must deal with before I can continue with business. You know who to call to take my usual stead. I will still be available by phone during the usual hours." Lina's voice was quieter than usual, "Yes Ms. Kailas." "Now I have a list of items that need to be delivered to cabin number four in about six hours." "Yes Ms. Kailas." Kai listed off a number of things she would need. Food supplies, cleaning products, books, more clothes and anything else she could that she might want. Lina finished the conversation without a word about Kai's outburst. She picked up the phone to order a bouquet of flowers for the patient secretary. Finally the scent on her was too much for her to take. Not to mention the whirl of emotions that ran through her every being. Who was this man that she had met twice now? Would she continue to be meeting him and waking up with all of these unanswerable questions? Did he know who she was during the day? Did he even care? And the one question that she continued to push further back, trying desperately to not let it surface. But it would, screaming at her to think about it, to plan for it. The most important question of all; was she pregnant? Her fingers rolled across her stomach as the stinging hot water poured over her body. She would know if she was pregnant, there would be some sign. Some..feeling. Like that feeling of contentment that you are too guilty to acknowledge? some dark part of her mind asked the question. She forced it away again with fervor. No, these were not things she needed to think on. She needed to relax and tend to her aching body first. After the hot shower she ran a hot bath, turning the cold off completely to try and scold the thoughts and scent away. She turned off the lights, enveloping the room in complete darkness save for where the door had been left open a crack. But she didn't bother to close it, far too tired and aching too much to do anything but dive straight into that hot water. After years of such hot water she was able to ease into it with little effort. Her eyes closed as she felt the darkness and the heat seep in around her, gladly letting her head slip under the water. She drowned out the sounds, the thoughts, the nagging guilt and sorrows that plagued her. She did nothing, saw nothing, heard nothing except the beating of her own heart. * * * Lyko awoke to a headache far beyond any brought on by a hangover. He didn't move at first, body stiff and unwilling, eye squinted shut as he let out a low, unhappy groan. It was about all he could do for a few minutes until he slowly raised a paw to feel at his nose, dried blood all about his nostrils. He had hit that tree a little harder than he thought. And with remembering the hit from the tree everything else came rushing back in an instant. He remembered everything from his vain search for the heated woman he had won dominance over, a fact that he was feeling now more than ever. Those blows she had gotten in the night came roaring back to him now. He could only imagine how she was feeling. With sudden despair he noticed the sun was already above him quite a ways. Maybe nine in the morning, which was late in a Were's sense of time. Most awoke with the very rising of the sun, but the knock from the tree had kept him asleep much longer than usual. The chances of finding her day form were slimmer than ever. But he stood and searched vainly, only to find a darkened cabin that smelled potently of him. He eased inside the door, careful of any tourists who had come to rent the place that morning. But it looked as deserted as when he came. The door to bathroom was barely open and completely dark within. No reason to check there. His heart rushed as he made his way to the bedroom, hoping, praying..but no, the potent scent of a corner he had urinated in finally won over his vain hope. No, there was no magic woman for him here. She had managed to elude him again. And now, if he was lucky and her day form stayed in place, he might have a chance to see her again. As was he wouldn't change into a Were again until the next full moon and neither would she. It was the most dangerous time for Weres. The lack of meeting between that time could completely abolish a relationship and there was no telling what might happen to the pups.. His heart clenched at the thought of what an upset mother might do. Abort them? Yes, a definite possibility, but one he simply couldn't consider. He carefully made his way out again, not even bothering to shut the door as he rushed head on into the familiar forest. He ran until his lungs burned, ran from the dark thoughts now coursing through his mind. He couldn't face the thought of never seeing her again.
