#9 of My Journey Through High School

It was the middle of the new week, a couple weeks after Ryan obtained his new scholarship. I was certainly proud of him, and I hope he was proud of himself, he certainly seemed like it. This week was only a week before thanksgiving weekend, which meant that the second mid-term of the year was just around the corner. Although I'm not one of the toublemakers in the school, that Wednesday morning I was called into the principal's office for an unknown reason. I knocked on the door to the office.

"Come in come in," he said and I did so, "Ryan, I was hoping to ask you a favor for today. Your grades are so well right now, that I was hoping you can take a period off and go show our newest student around." It was then I noticed the person sitting in the chair across the principal's desk, he was human also, only slightly more tanned skin and longer hair, and he seemed slightly older. It was nice to know there would be another human attending here, since Pine View had so few humans around.

"Sure thing," I said and offered a handshake, "I'm Ryan Lewis, what's your name?" He looked at it hesitantly for a bit before shaking.

"Dustin," he said.

"Pleasure to meet you Dustin," I said and the principal handed me his schedule.

"Ryan you should probably start with showing him his locker," the principle suggested. I nodded and led Dustin out, bringing him to his locker, which was straight across from mine and a few down. As soon as his supplies were fit in nicely I showed him around everywhere, including the gym, bathrooms, vending machines, cafeteria, and numerous classrooms. I noticed Alduin waving at us from a classroom as we passed.

"So where are you from?" I asked as we took a little break by the water fountain.

"Stillwell, Oklahoma," he replied.

"Wow you're pretty far away," I said, "how are you liking it here in St. George?"

"It's not bad," he said and we took a seat as we got to the cafeteria area again.

"What's your family like?" I asked. I figured getting to know him a little better would help make things more comfortable between us, and I could make another new friend. He seemed a little uncomfortable about this.

"I kind of not want to talk about it," he said.

"I'm a great listener," I said giving a warm smile. He looked at me for a second before finally answering.

"Well I have a rather large family, but we don't see eye to eye," he explained, "usually when they don't argue with me they ignore me."

"Ignore you," I said, "what about times like your birthday?"

"No one's ever really done anything for my birthday," he said bluntly, I was aghast.

"You're kidding, never?"

"Never," he said, I felt sorry and had an idea.

"When is your birthday?" I asked.

"It's tomorrow actually," he answered.

‘So not much time,' I thought as the bell rang. It was time for my next class but I wanted to get his number before I left. I asked and he wrote it down.

"Thanks Ryan," he said, "you've been exceptionally kind."

"Don't mention it," I said, "now let's have a look at your schedule so we can get you in class."

"No kidding," Morrell said as he quickly chomped through his sandwich.

"So can we do it?" I asked the group, who were all looking around at each other.

"I think it's possible," Nokemy said happily, "we can use my house since my folks are still out of town." With Nokemy's suggestion we were all keen and happy enough to do it, but it was just a matter of having everything set up. Snacks weren't a problem since we already had enough party supplies lying around, and Sunrise, Runo, Hinori, and Ryan were more than happy enough to make the cake. The Lucian brothers were nice enough to make the decorations. Adair, Jake, and Jason were all nice enough to go and grab a few gifts, which left me and Morrell to figure out what Dustin wanted, and to help keep him company until it was time for the party.

"Ok then," I said, "and nothing sexual like that, we don't know if he's even into that stuff or not." Everyone agreed.

The next day had come rather fast, I waited out where the buses got off. Dustin told me he rode the bus to school so I texted him that I would meet him when he arrived, and I was very adamant about that. At least until a couple bullies decided to ruin my fun with more anti-gay banter.

"Hey fag," one of them said, "where's your boyfriend today?" This got quite a bit of laughs, but I showed no hint of emotion, although I wasn't particularly happy about that.

"Hey Ryan," I heard as Dustin walked up to me, "ready for classes?"

"Sure thing," I said and we hurried to our lockers, where Morrell was waiting for me. He gave me a quick peck on the cheek, which I smiled until I noticed Dustin was watching us.

"Wow," he said, "I didn't know you were into that."

"Morrell," I said, "what did I tell you?" The orca in question scratched his head in embarrassment.

"It's ok," Dustin said, "I think it's actually kind of cute." He shut his locker door and we were quick off to class. All of us knew it was his birthday this very day, which was the big idea for his surprise party. Jake and Jason had introduced themselves to him throughout the day. It was strange that I started noticing that Jake and Jason in particular were spending lots of extra time together.

We were all pretty happy when school was over, and we were walking. I met up with Dustin and stopped him before he could get back on the bus.

"Where are you going?" I asked him.

"Home," he said, "where else?"

"I got something to show you," I said and took his hand, nearly yanking him as I ran to Nokemy's house. Fortunately he was the closest to the school than the rest of us, and we only ran a block. We had met Morrell mid run, who winked at me and pulled out a red blindfold, and when we got to the front door he quickly wrapped it around his eyes.

"No peaking Dustin," the orca said chuckling and knocked on the door six times in rhythm. This was to signify that everyone inside hide. We waited a minute for Nokemy to quietly open the door up and let us in, and the three of us slowly led the human into the living room, where all the decorations colorfully filled the room. A sign saying ‘Happy Birthday Dustin' was aligned over the entertainment center, and the ceiling was littered with numerous balloons. The table in the center of the room held a lustrous looking chocolate cake that had a couple cards and presents wrapped up. Morrell slowly slid the blindfold off and told him he could open his eyes, and when we did, we jumped him in surprise.

"SURPRISE," we shouted, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUSTIN!!!" If him turning pale white in surprise meant he was having a heart attack, then it was definitely for sure a heart attack. His expression was priceless, a true Kodak moment. Speaking of Kodak moment, Runo snuck a picture of Dustin's expression on his camera phone, how typical of him.

"You guys did all this for me?" Dustin asked, "but why?"

"Why?" Snow began, "ask the only other human here." Dustin turned to face me.

"Come on Dustin," I said, "I was heartbroken when you told me your family never did anything for you for your birthday, so I got some of my friends together to do a little something nice for you-" I didn't get to finish the sentence as Dustin hugged me in a vice grip.

"That's the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me," he said, "you guys are true friends."

"Anytime," we all said.

"Now Dustin," Morrell said, "it's time for your cake and presents." The rest of the day was spent with numerous activities, including indulging on the delicious cake that was prepared, playing a few party games we had brought, and leave it to Morrell and Runo to turn it a XXX rating when it came to twister.

"Strip twister?" I asked, "really?"

"It's what you got to expect from those two Ryan," Canad said, "besides, birthday boy here is happy enough to participate so there isn't any reason not to." He certainly did have a point and I decided to go with it, and it wasn't like any parents were going to crash the party anytime soon, especially since Nokemy's were far out of the state. Although the idea was hot, it took too much time and we just stopped when Morrell managed to beat out Nokemy, Dustin, and even Runo, bringing all three to their underwear.

"Ok so not much really happened," Morrell said, "but as punishment you must wear only that for the rest of the day." This got the chuckles he was looking for, and we moved on to the presents. He had gotten a few gifts cards and a video game, which was one I knew he really liked.

"How did you know I liked this?" he asked.

"Because it's one of Lewis's favorites," Equinox said, "and he's really good at it too."

"Maybe," I said with a laugh. The rest of the night went by fast, after testing out his new game, he told us that he really had to get home, and we got his dad to come pick him up.

"We'll see you tomorrow," Blaze said waving him goodbye. Dustin waved back as he was taken back to his home, gifts in hand.

"Well that was fun," Ryan Godsey said. It sure was, and Morrell gave me a hug.

"Ryan," he said, "you have a heart of gold you know. You made another soul happy, and made me proud to be your boyfriend." I blushed and smiles as we planted a kiss square on the lips.
