A short companion story to "Stripes". The day after breaking up with his long time boyfriend, Adam tries to get his life back on track.

On My Own

By T. Glenn

I don't think I've run so hard in my life. Well, not since I got chased by that crackhead down the street that one time. It did help relieve some of my anger, I will admit that. My boyfriend broke up with me the day before; he'd been cheating in me for months anyway. Still, we'd been dating for almost two years and I couldn't believe he could just throw it away for some random hookup. In any case, I used my run this morning as an outlet and it made me feel a bit better.

Slowing down to a walk as I approached my apartment building, I did my best to catch my breath. I don't even like running to be honest. I'm much more into lifting but I made a commitment to myself a few months ago to make some much needed improvements in my life, and I thought running was a good thing to do. I went in through the garage area of the complex since it was closer than the reception area door. The stairs up to the third floor were tortuous, considering I was still panting from my run.

I should have taken the place on the first floor when I had the chance.

I took my time walking down the long hallway to my apartment, letting my feet drag on the carpet a little as I thought about my now ex-boyfriend. The sound of a door closing down the hall roused me from my melancholy a little, and I saw my neighbor Lawrence heading my way. He was wearing a well fitting dark gray suit and a tie, and looked positively gorgeous. His orange and black fur was always immaculately groomed, and this morning was no exception. Overall he was just a really handsome tiger, and he was gay.

"Hey, good morning." Lawrence said cheerfully as he got close.

"Hey bro." I managed to choke out between my gasps for air.

Hey bro? Are you kidding me?

I turned the lock and stepped into my apartment as I beat myself up over my lackluster greeting when the smell of smoke hit my nose.

"Oh hey man, you're back already?" Called my cousin from the couch.

"I only went out for a run," I shot back, "And I really wish you wouldn't smoke weed in my apartment, Michael."

The miscreant was splayed out on my couch watching cartoons on my TV--a multicolored glass bong in his lap.

"Oh sorry dude, I opened the window," He said pointing across the room.

I looked at the window and saw that it had been opened maybe two inches at most.

"That's not enough to get the smell out, you idiot." I strode angrily over to the window and pulled it all the way open.

"I know, right?" He replied absently.

Stomach growling, I opened the fridge to get a slice of the leftover pizza I had from the night before and noticed that there was only a singular slice left.

"Uh, Michael", I called from the fridge, "Did you eat all of my pizza, bro? What the fuck?"

"Sorry, I was really hungry for some reason," I heard him say.

Yeah, I think I know why that is.

"Look, I really need you to like, be cool for a couple days." I said pulling the pizza out of the fridge and taking a bite (I really like cold pizza, for some reason), "My boyfriend dumped my last night, so that would really help me out."

"Aww, I'm so sorry cuz," Michael managed to say after a coughing fit, "That guy was weasel anyways, so you know."

"Are you saying he was literally a weasel? What are you saying?" I asked as I plopped myself down on the couch next to him.

"Well he cheated on you, right?"

"Yeah, but he's a Marten. So I wasn't sure if you meant that he's actually--you know what, nevermind"

"So, he's like...both." The look of amazement on his face as he came to this epiphany was a little funny, I admit.

"Yeah sure, whatever." I said as I finished eating, "Are you just gonna sit here and smoke all day, or what?

"It's Saturday man, give me a break," He said, eyes trained on the TV, "But FYI, I've got a some stuff for sale at an art show this afternoon."

"That's wonderful, because I could really use some help on the rent. I haven't exactly been selling a lot of cars this month, and your mom told me that you only needed to stay here for a few weeks. So basically, I feel like you could chip in a little. It's been like two months now."

Michael nodded and took another hit from his bong, exhaling in the direction of the window. It didn't help though, considering the window was clear across the room.

"Alright cuz, you've been awesome helping me out," He said after some more coughing, "I'll help you if I sell any paintings at the show."

"Thanks, now stop eating my food." I said as I got up to go take a shower.

I took a long, hot shower. I feel like when I'm in the shower, that I'm isolated from the world. The only things that exist during that time are my thoughts, and the warm water raining down over my head. I may have shed a tear or two while I was in there, thinking about my now ended relationship with Tom. We'd been together for long enough, that I think I can honestly say I loved him. Our relationship hadn't been perfect, but I thought it was good enough. I guess I was wrong.

I'm just a lonely wolf, in a lonely world.

I got on my weekend sweatpants, and went into my room to use my computer. I heard the TV in the living room playing cartoons still, so I assumed Michael was still hanging out on the couch. I made sure to clear my Facebook of any pictures or references of my ex--a task that took a quite a lot longer than I thought it would. After that, I wasn't quite sure what to do with myself. I browsed the news mindlessly for a while, and saw one of those lifestyle articles you see occasionally. It was titled "10 things to do after a breakup". I didn't expect a whole lot when I read the article, and I was mostly right about it. The majority of the "tips" that the article listed were lazy truisms, and I found myself skimming through it quickly. One thing did resonate slightly with me though: Get yourself back out there.

I thought for a moment about it, and decided to take the advice. Back when I started dating my ex-boyfriend, I relished in deleting Meet from my phone. It's advertised as a "gay dating" app, but it's mostly just used for hooking up. Nevertheless I found myself re-downloading the app. I'm sure the article I'd just finished reading didn't exactly have hookups in mind when it recommended getting back out there, but I thought that a little random sex might be what I needed to make myself feel better.

As I opened that app, I had to go through the whole process of setting up an account and making a profile. I put in my stats:

Height: 5'11"

Weight: 185

Eyes: Blue

Species: Wolf

Fur Color: Gray

About Me: Just a handsome guy looking for nothing in particular.

For my profile pic, I uploaded a really nice shot of my chest. I'm pretty muscular actually, but the light in the picture was also really nice--it was one of those pics you keep, needless to say. I finally got to the main dashboard, and I browsed through the different profiles for a while.

"Hey man, I'm heading out to set up for the art show. Can I borrow your car?" I heard my Michael yell from the living room.

He's going to fuck my car up, I bet.

"Yeah I guess so, but if you crash it I'm going to strangle you until the life leaves your body." I yelled, while keeping my eyes on my phone.

"Thanks dude."

I kicked my feet up on my desk and leaned back in my chair, still scrolling down through the profiles. As I neared the bottom of the list of guys in my area, I saw something that caught my eye. A handsome tiger's face lost among the sea of other profile pics. I tapped on his picture to pull up his profile. A closeup of Lawrence filled the screen of my phone--a mischievous grin on his face.

Those golden eyes...

I started a message, but I decided not to send it.

He lives two doors down from me. How am I going to look if I can't get up the courage to go talk to him in person?

I decided that I'd go pay the tiger a visit sometime over the weekend--I'd have to think up some excuse talk to him, though. I relaxed on my bed for a while, and fantasized about a number of unlikely scenarios that would bring the two of us into contact.

I was rudely pulled back into reality by the sound of some rustling emanating from the living room. The overgrown cub that was Michael needed constant supervision, so I reluctantly pulled myself off my bed and walked out to investigate. I saw the wiry wolf wrapping some of his paintings up brown paper, I guess to protect them during transport. In the course of doing so, however, he'd knocked everything off of my coffee table and onto the rug.

"Can you not try to destroy everything I own?" I said, reaching down to pick up my (miraculously) undamaged glass dragon sculpture.

"Oops, yeah I'll watch it." He said dismissively.

I sat down on the couch and picked up the remote, changing the channel over to the news. The svelte red fox anchoring the news show had just finished talking about some political scandal, and then handed the show over to his large breasted vixen wife--who just happened to be the weather girl.

"Hey Michael, have you seen that tiger from 304 around the complex?"

"I think so, why?" He replied--still struggling to wrap his paintings.

"I'm thinking about asking him out." I said casually, running my claws through my tail fur.

"Get after it bro," He said with a wide smile, "I didn't know he was into dudes, that's cool man."

"Thanks," I said, "But I don't even think he knows I'm gay, to be honest. I've only spoken to him a few times."

"Tell him you're into him then. It's not that hard, dude," Michael had moved onto another painting, "I think that boy is loaded though. He's got the sweetest car of anyone in the whole 'plex. I don't know what he's doing living in this dump."

"Yeah, well this dump is good enough for a guy who's bumming it on my couch." I said indignantly.

"Yeah, it's the best." He said cooly.

I spend the next twenty minutes loading paintings of various sizes into my car. I gave Michael the keys, somewhat reluctantly, and he took off for his art show. Closing the door behind me, I was assaulted by the overly strong smell of weed that now permeated my apartment. I spent a minute or two after that doing various things to try and get rid of the scent, to include spraying a generous amount of scent-neutralizing spray on my furniture. Michael did drive me crazy but I actually did enjoy his hijinks a little bit, to be honest. With my recent breakup, I thought that maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have the company. Sitting down on the couch again, I pulled out my phone to check Meet. I had a few messages, but not from anyone I thought was particularly attractive or interesting. I sat there for a moment considering what to do for the rest of the day and felt a little sexual desire stirring within me.

Maybe one of the guys on here its looking

I looked at some of the guys that were closest to me, according to the app. One of them--an average looking bear--was on, and apparently looking. He replied quickly when I messaged him, and we quickly arranged for him to come over to my apartment.

Hearing the knock on my door, I jumped up, already a little excited about my visitor. I hadn't had any sex with anyone other than my boyfriend for the time that we were together, and the thought of someone new was exciting to me. I took a deep breath, and opened the door to see a stocky brown bear standing outside.

"Hey there," I said curiously, "Come on in."

"Thanks, how's it going?" He asked as he stepped into my apartment.

"Not bad, just a little bored is all." I answered casually.

"Yeah, me to," He said with a smile, "So you want me to blow you or what?"

"Uh, yeah that sounds good man." I said, my tail wagging.

The bear wasn't the most handsome guy--not someone I'd be interested in dating--but he was alright, and he was definitely good enough to hook up with.

I brought him into my bedroom and I sat down on the edge of my bed, my tail thrashing on the bed behind me.

"I love wolves," said the bear, "You guys are so cute when you're excited."

He knelt down in front of me, tugging my sweatpants.

"Oh, sorry," I said quickly as I stood up and pulled my pants off, tossing them into the corner of the room.

"That's more like it," He said happily, pushing me back down onto the bed.

I felt his warm breath on my dick as he got close, and his long bear tongue wrapped wonderfully around my shaft as he licked it.

"Ugh, that's good," I moaned in a low town.

"Glad you think so," He said chuckling, "Alright, Wolfie."

He took my whole shaft in his mouth, slowly moving his head up and down. Grabbing my thighs with his paws, he squeezed and rubbed them vigorously--intensifying the pleasure I felt. I rubbed the top of his head with my paw, running my claws lightly through his course brown fur. He seemed to like when I did that, and I felt the head of my dick press against the back of his throat as he deep throated me. That made me moan deeply as he did it.

This guy is really good

"I'm close..." I warned him.

"Do it." He replied, taking his muzzle away from my dick for a moment.

As he took me back into his muzzle, I grabbed the back of his head and let myself cum into his throat--growling deeply as I did.

He pulled himself from my dick--a satisfied smile on his face.

"How was that Wolfie? Not too bad?" He asked, squeezing my tender member playfully.

"Wow, yeah that awesome." I flashed him a smile.

The bear got to his feet, "Well I've got to head out now," He said unexpectedly.

"Wait, you don't want me to get you off?" I asked, a little confused.

"No, it's cool," He replied quickly, "Let me know if you want me to come back, though. I like you." He said, tussling the fur on the top of my head. I heard the door close as he left my apartment. I fell back onto the bed, sighing deeply. I laid there for a moment, letting my hardness go away as my thoughts wandered onto other things.

After jumping into the shower briefly to clean myself off, I pulled on some clean sweatpants and walked back into the living room. I'd been thinking about Lawrence as I washed myself, and I decided I'd do go talk to him. I went and got a shirt on, and stepped out into the hallway. Approaching Lawrence's apartment I paused for a moment--I felt some butterflies in my stomach--and I knocked on his door. Standing there in the hallway in anticipation, no one answered the door.

I guess he's still out

I did admittedly lose some of my nerve after that, and I ended up leaving him a note asking him to text me. I considered leaving my number on the note, in the event that he didn't have it, but I thought it would be a bad idea to leave my number for everyone to see. In any case, I'd given it to him once before when I had him water some of my houseplants while I went to visit my parents one time. I mostly just used it as a pretext to hang out with him for a little while while I showed him around my apartment, but I don't think he picked up on what I was doing at the time.

If he doesn't have it, then he knows where I live

After I attached the sticky note to his door, I got back into my apartment to check the time.

My phone said it was almost 1:00 p.m. so I sent a text to my friend Jesse to ask if we were still doing band practice this afternoon. After a minute or two he said that we would be, so I got ready and he picked me up on the way to our bandmate's garage.

Band practice wasn't so bad. I played lead guitar for a three person rock band that I formed with some friends. We'd recently played a very successful set at a local bar, and the place had asked us back for an artist's night next weekend. Anyway, practice went well and I rode back to my apartment complex with Jesse afterward. I stared out the window as we drove, watching the other cars driving by. I wondered what sort of lives the people in the cars led as we drove. I saw a fox walking down the sidewalk by himself.

_I wonder if he has someone _

"What's up with you, Adam?" I heard Jesse ask from the driver's seat, "You've been acting weird since before practice."

I gave a small sigh and looked over at the coyote, "My boyfriend broke up with me yesterday."

"Oh man, that's rough," He said sympathetically, "You guys were together for a while right? Why'd he break up with you?"

"I guess he'd been cheating on me, and he decided he didn't really want to be with me anyway."

We came up to a stoplight, and Jesse looked over at me, "Look man, I know you probably don't want to hear this but I think it's good that this happened."

"What do you mean?" I let a small growl out with my response.

"I know how you felt about that guy, but honestly, everyone else could tell he was a jerk. We all thought you deserved someone better, Adam." Jesse explained as the van pulled through the intersection.

I looked back out through the window and thought about what he said for a while. I'm not sure that I wanted to spend the rest of my life wife my ex. Actually, I don't know what I thought my future with him would lead to.

"I know, I'm still not happy about it though." I mumbled after a while.

"You'll find someone, don't worry," Jesse said with a wink and his wide coyote smile, "I'd fuck you myself If I weren't into girls. That's how much I think of you."

I thought about that for a second, and it brought a smile to my muzzle.

"Yeah well I don't know if I'd hook up with a skeevy coyote like you." I said while giving him a play punch in the shoulder.

"It's probably for the best," Jesse chuckled to himself, "But I'd take on for the team if you needed me to, buddy. Well I mean you'd take one, technically."

We traded more playful barbs with each other on the way back to my apartment. We were about a block away from the complex when my phone vibrated.

"Oh!" my eyes widened a little as I saw the message from Lawrence.

"What is it?" Jesse asked, looking over at me curiously.

"It's this tiger that lives next to me," I said, excitement welling up in my chest, "I might not have to take that offer from you after all."
