Poem #94: Moving Up

Poem I wrote about growth, in a more figurative sense. Actually wrote this one semi recently.

A plant's life starts as a seed

A hard, solid shell

of potential.

The first drink of water is the sweetest

Each drop causes the seed to swell

Slowly, a crack appears

The smallest of roots is born.

After many roots have made their way

Deep into the soil,

The green of stem finally appears.

Young in life, this stem is,

Yet nowhere to go

but up.

Slowly, the green pushes through the dirt

Growing and pushing on

Pounds of earth lay in its way.

Is this direction truly up?

How long will it take

for the stem to push its way up

to the surface?

Over time, it pushes on

Until finally,

Green meets fresh air

And the warmest of sunlight.

Digging its roots into the cold ground,

It faces the sunlight

And drinks in the warmth

to become what it is meant to be.
