A Furry's Nightmare: Chapter 1

"Mum?!" Folvos speaks in a barely audible whisper and takes a tentative step towards the dark red furred wolf Ninjin in front of him. Tears struggle to break free of their prisons where Folvos kept all his emotions. The sight of his mother breaking all those walls he had strove to put up in order to protect himself. When the red wolf turns to face Folvos he notices something about the wolf he thought was his mum. Her face isn't the kind caring one he once saw, her face is filled with pain and regret. Folvos takes a step back once he sees her face and stands there looking over her face. "Mum?" he chokes out, this time struggling to speak due to the un-expected appearance of her once beautiful face. She shakes her head lightly and mumbles something before turning back to what she was doing. Folvos walks up behind her tentatively and looks over her shoulder. It appears that she was working on a puzzle of some kind.

"Mum?" Folvos said feeling slightly defeated that his mother would ignore him. Finally she turned around as if she heard him.

"Folvos are you there?" she inquires.

"MUM! Are you ok? Where are you?!" I look at her eyes pleading for an answer.

"YOU DID THIS!" she glares at him in the eyes. "YOU ARE THE REASON I'M LIKE THIS!"

"MUM! What are you saying?!?!"

"YOU'RE THE REASON I'M DEAD." She ends that statement off and grabs the pen she was using and stabbed it through his chest. Folvos wakes up in a cold sweat, his clock telling him it is 5 am. Deciding it was too late for him to go back to sleep he got up to go have a shower and get ready for school.

"Folvos, it's great to see you after the holidays again!" A blur of purple and yellow scales just about tackles Folvos to the ground in a hug after only taking a few steps into the school.

"Hey..." Folvos says trying to regain his footing. The pale orange wolf having forgotten how powerfully dragons could hug and his best friend's tendency for getting over excited, "How have you been RJ?"

"Great! We did so much over the holidays, I don't think you'd believe me if I told you everything we did, how about you?" I chuckle at her choice of words.

"Trust me, if I was to tell you everything it'd take about 50 pages and a few thousand words." Folvos states partially joking but with a serious undertone in his voice.

"Well, you've got all day to tell me about it."

"Ugh, I should've stayed there shouldn't I?" Folvos smirks at RJ as she takes the hint and replies in her own teasing tone, "Probably, I mean you are always saying how much you hate me..."

"Wait, you really did all that?!? You aren't pulling my wing or something?" RJ starts in partial disbelief looking over me in a seemingly new light.

"Do you honestly believe I could make something like that up? Honestly it'd make this story assignment a lot easier..." Folvos glances one last time at the story assignment their English teacher had given to the students before packing it into his bag with the other homework he had.

"Well, I suppose that is a good point, Why not just do something like that story for English but change parts?"

"RJ you are a genius!" The exclamation causes RJ to jump back slightly in fright and some unwanted heads to turn along the road they two friends were walking along. Folvos shrinks back slightly and his ears press back into his head getting shy now that everyone was looking his way. Most of the surrounding high school students turned away and kept walking but he could feel some eyes on him from behind.

"You ok Folvos?" RJ questions noticing her friends suddenly shy mood.

"I'm... fine." Came the reply after a few seconds. RJ looks around and Folvos just keeps staring at the ground.

"Come on, we're almost to your house." She grabs Folvos by the arm and they walk together in near silence until they reach Folvos's house. There's nothing special about it, there are four brick walls, an older looking Ute in the brick driveway, roof and a decent looking garden out the front with a few plants around.

"I'll talk to you later RJ." Is all Folvos says as he goes to cross the road.

"Alright, I'll talk to you later. Bye!" She hugs him right before he leaves to go into the new house.

Folvos walks into the door and glances around the un-homely sight he called home. His dad hadn't taken lightly to what had happened to his mum and since then he had become a shell of his former self. Gone was the self-respecting, caring, fatherly man his mother married, and in was a new, drunken, un-feeling 'dad'. He looked around the mess the living room was and saw his dad watching football on the T.V. Folvos tried to get into the kitchen without alerting his father. Doctors had said blunt force trauma was what killed their mother, the police, however, had looked and there was absolutely no indication of who caused it. Folvos's dad was considered a suspect but he couldn't have done it. The thoughts of his Mother weighed heavily on Folvos, he still blamed himself for having that dream on the night she died. Folvos, being distracted, stepped on a wrapper "Why are you so late?" his dad growled. Folvos looked at the clock to his right and saw it was 3:30, usually he could be home by 3:25 but the incident with RJ had slowed them a little making him 'late.'

"My friend and I..."

"Bwahahaha! YOU! FRIENDS?!? Haha, no one would want to be friends with a little nerd like you... Go to your room until you give me the real reason." Folvos's father rudely interrupted. Folvos takes one more teary eyed look around the room and then bolts into his bedroom. Glad his father payed more attention to the Football than him Folvos started sobbing quietly.

The usually happy, pale orange coloured Wolf started to cry softly, tears flowing down his cheeks with little restraint. A sudden, seemingly random, white piece of paper under a metal box caught his eye. Folvos pulled it out, being careful to prevent any tears from landing on it, and read the note another time. He had nearly memorised the note by now with how many times he had read it.

Folvos flipped it around to the back and looked at the grid he had made a few weeks ago. Already about three quarters had been filled. Folvos sobbed for a bit longer and put the end of the marker's lid into his mouth. The habit had developed lately and he didn't know where from he only noticed it the other day when someone had kindly pointed out the fact that Folvos was "imagining he was sucking a dick." This in turn added about a rows worth of crosses to the chart in front of him. He thought over his confrontation with his Dad...

"No one would want to be friends with a little nerd like you!"

Folvos nods his head slightly and takes the marker from his mouth and proceeds to draw a big red cross through the next box in line... "Tomorrow is a new day..." He whispers to himself as one last tear rolls down his cheek.

Looser,

Worthless,

Gay,

"Tomorrow is another day..."

Your mother would be ashamed of you!!!

"Tomorrow is a new day..."

Lazy,

Good for nothing,

Loner,

"Tomorrow is going to be better..."

Nobody likes an orange know it all wolf, and no one ever will!

"Tomorrow will hopefully be better..."

Gay,

Fagget,

Geek

"Tomorrow might be better..."

Why are you still here? Nobody wants you here!

"It doesn't get better...

Not here at least..." Folvos whispers to himself as he gazes over the grid he had made only a month ago. All 36 boxes had big red crosses through them and the small metal cube was calling to Folvos.

"I gave them chances... They spat at me in return. Now it's my turn to spit in theirs." Folvos says out loud to no one in particular. He picks the small cube up in one hand and starts flipping over the sides. After a while Folvos pushes in on one of the metallic sides and there is a subtle 'click' and some soft 'whirring' noises. The fur on his hand and closest to the cube starts to stand up on edge as it starts rotating in his hand.

Metal bending where there were no previous creases. Finally the box has folded into a small pyramid with the top area cut off. Folvos just looks at the semi-pyramid and blinks a few times. Folvos's curiosity gets the better of him, ignoring the fact the fur on his hands were still standing up, Folvos looked over the device closely. Once he got close enough that his nose was centimetres from the top, a button popped out which caused Folvos to jump back and almost drop the device.

He took one last look to the night sky outside, its soft beauty trapping him for a minute before he looked back at the button. Grabbing his school bag, which he'd, filled with 'supplies' earlier, namely the picture he had of his family while his mother was alive. His laptop, laptop charger, phone and lastly his wallet with about $30 in it were also in there. He looked out at the night and pushed the button. All his fur stood on end and then a portal opened in front of him. All that he could see inside was black. Not like "midnight black", pure black. The type of black that sucked in all the colours around it. One final tear fell out of his eye and he stepped into the black abyss.
