#1 of The Nexarus Continum

This is my first contribution to The Nexarus Continum, An ongoing series of stories written by NeedlessBird and myself. This story falls somewhere in the life and times of Adathus Nexarus, but is meant to be read after this one [ http://needlessbird.deviantart.com/art/The-Nexarus-Continum-Adathus-Nexarus-572477995 ] as it explains what exactly is going on in the world, its not mandatory but it will make this one make a whole lot more sense

The Story itself, and Adathus Nexarus are mine.

It was Edited, Produced and the world was co-created by NeedlessBird, who I cannot thank enough for helping me and inspiring me to finally get a solid story written.

Thousands of people walked and rushed through the streets of New York City and over the top Adathus Nexarus stuck out.. He stood out like the proverbial sore thumb, red scales and black mane sticking out over the crowd. Taller species made it easier for him to see where he was going in the mass of people. Even though having more heads popping out of the waves of people Adathus still drew attention.

As the Peacekeeper walked a voice rang out over the massive crowds,"Go back to your lab Mutant! And quit taking our jobs!"

The first comment seemed run of the mill in New York, but the latter made it clear that it was directed at the Peacekeeper. Ignoring the comment and continuing to walk Adathus made it a few steps before half a hot dog sailed past his head and directly onto a cab window. He sighed and took another step as something hot and wet hit the back of his head Adathus's head snapped around to see a human trying to run against the flow of traffic on the sidewalk; other people pushing him around.

The Peacekeeper's eyes burned a bright orange as he pushed through the crowd towards the man knocking smaller pedestrians out of his way. Looking back the man's face turned to panic as Adathus closed in on him. He turned to cross the street looping back behind Adathus who was bolting to catch him. Before the assailant could get across a canine, soaked in coffee, tackled him to the ground and began beating the life out of him.

The canine man screamed long strings of what Adathus recognized as Spanish slurs. Passers hardly gave them notice as the brawl came dangerously close to moving traffic. Adathus smiled and resumed walking with the flow of pedestrians as two police officers rushed to break up the fight.

Adathus stepped off into an alcove for a closed bar, a sign in the window showing the symbol for "Geno Friendly" with a large red line through it. Adathus chuckled as he shook the coffee from his mane, black spatters covering the windows and door of the bar. He smiled taking a moment to reflect on his work as he walked back into the flow of people still headed for his office building.

Arriving without further incident, Adathus climbed the stairs to the 9th floor and swiped his card into the office. He could hear his secretary on a phone call as he passed her desk. He stopped and glared for a moment before nodding towards his office. Adathus's briefcase landed on the oak desk with an audible thump.

"Did your suit need some help waking up this morning?" Michelle asked as she picked up her bosses discarded clothes.

"Did Sarah decide whether she's going to cheat on her husband while he's at work again this morning" Adathus chided, seeing the number for her friend Sarah on the screen.

"She's never done that Addie. She works at the same place he does anyway" Michelle's voice seethed with a lighthearted venom

Adathus ignored the retort and kept walking around his desk discarding clothes on to it until he stood in just his skivvies.. Michelle picked up the last of his clothes she looked over her boss's chest and for a split second too long devolving into gawking.

"I already have other meetings today. Unlike you i can't take personal calls at work." Adathus stated like a matter of fact as he headed for his personal bathroom.

"Hey,you've made time for our 'under the table' meetings in the past." Michelle called as the door closed.

He checked the door to make sure it was closed before smiling to himself. He turned on the water in the small shower and stepped in to wash the coffee from his fur. Adathus emerged from the shower a few minutes later to an empty office, a new suit presented over his chair and his messages laid out over his desk. His work was dull for the most part; approving things, declining offers, deleting emails from the press and so on. Around 4 his phone lit up.

"The men from DBM software are here sir" It was Michelle.

"Send them in" Adathus replied before groaning and wiping the emotion from his face He knew what this meeting was when the two men waltzed in. Colin and Kevin from the board of a small software company were going to come in and present a highball offer him to screw his boss. Negotiations between the Harper Consortium, his parent company, and their board of directors had been driving their stock value into the ground.

Before the two men could sit Adathus started,"The current offer stands at one and a quarter million for the entire share of your business. This offer drops fifty thousand dollars for every you word say that is not 'deal'. Speak carefully."

Kevin, the brash one of the two, laughed, "You make us a proper deal and we'll accept it. Our boss told your boss that and asked him to pass it on to you next time you went down on him."

Colin's faced flushed white as he counted what his colleague said..

Adathus ignored the comment about blowing his boss and continued on."You have no market share and so many lawsuits to deal with that you're lucky you aren't paying us to deal with your problems. We are paying you millions for a couple patents that we don't want to see go someplace else"

"Well then pay up scales because nothing in this world is free" Kevin retorted.

The arguments continued for a long while until Adathus called in Michelle to bring in water and coffee. Kevin, the one who was obviously older than his co-worker gestured over to Michelle as she poured and handed out coffee to the men

"Hey, scales, put her in your offer and you got a deal." Adathus glared at him, but he was totally focused on Michelle's ass. He stood and walked her out of the room before returning to his desk,

"That's not how you talk about my staff around here" Adathus warned the bigger man as he took the long way to his desk so he could pass behind them.

"She's worth what you're paying her ain't she" he spoke up again, this time earning a scolding look from the younger man. Adathus removed his suit jacket and layed it over the back of his chair before returning to the back of the two men.

"Yes, she is one of the most diligent workers I employ; first in and last out every day. I'm not entirely sure she even leaves." Adathus said, disregarding the sexual connotation and giving Kevin one last chance not to make the same mistake again.

"Hey, you let me blow a load in her and you can have the company for a hundred grand!" he laughed.

Colin quickly lept from his chair the comment left his partners lips. He looked back in time to see the Peacekeeper strike his coworker so hard that he was thrown out of the chair he sat in.

Adathus grabbed the man and threw him towards the windowed wall. He grabbed the man again and smashed into the beam between the panes of glass. The Peacekeeper was furious, staring directly into the man's eyes as he held him.

His breath was labored and filled with fear.Adathus gripped his throat and slammed him into the pillar again.

"If I ever see you in one of my offices ever again, I will throw you out this window. And I promise I, will, not, miss. Do you understand?!" Adathus roared, pausing between words for emphasis, his voice seethed with rage as he slammed the man into the steel beam to emphasize every word. His eyes shone the same brilliant orange and the hairs on his mane stood tall above his head. Colin quickly grabbed the documents from Adathus' desk and signed them, putting the pen down loudly to attract the Peacekeeper's attention. The Peacekeeper snapped around in an instant, dropping the battered man on the ground and glaring down at his friend, cowering behind his desk.

The man quickly produced a large sheet of paper, and started hastily writing on it and speaking out loud,

"This Nondisclosure Agreement is entered into by and between Adathus Nexarus with its principal offices at 248 24th street Manhattan, New York and DBM Software located at 158 West Broadway,, New York City, New York for the purpose of preventing the unauthorized disclosure of Confidential Information as defined below...." The man shook with fear as he handed Adathus the pen and recoiled as the Peacekeeper snatched it from his hands and signed the papers,

"I am so so sorry I told him to just sit there and shut up so he could sign as the witness. I'm sorry about taking pot shots at you and Jackson and I'm sorry for looking at Michelle's rack when I came in. Please accept this offer and my deepest apologies, you know it's not personal it's just business." The man was visibly shaking now.

Adathus signed the agreement and the NDA before he turned around and grabbed the larger man and tossed him on to his desk as though it was nothing. Leaning over the now unconscious man and getting within inches of the other humans face Adathus glared directly into his eyes and said,"Get out now, and you still may get a job here cleaning the shit stains off of my toilets"

The first man tried to pick up his colleague over his shoulder along with all his stuff, but dropped him on the floor, waking him up as Colin quickly got Kevin to his feet and carried him out of Adathus' office.

Michelle entered her bosses office a few minutes later closing the door behind her. Adathus heard her come in but said nothing and kept looking out at the city through the large floor to ceiling windows. The husky girl stood beside him running a hand along his back. Adathus didn't even flinch, she knew he was deep in thought about something and she wasn't going to get him to talk even if she tried.

Michelle just kept her hand on his back and watched the sun go down with him. For as long as she had worked with the Peacekeeper she had known that he watched every sunset. Something about the sunset over the skyline had a calming effect on him. Some nights when she saw the sky turn gold Michelle would just watch him as she took the last of his files for the day and cleaned up. Adathus let out a long slow breath, breaking the silence.

Michelle was the first to speak,"You don't have to stand up for me like that Adathus. I'm a big girl now you know."

"He had plenty of time to shut up and chose not to. he got what he deserved." Adathus answered calmly, "You know how I work and so did he. I've worked with Colin before, there is no way in hell he wasn't telling that asshole to keep his damn mouth shut the whole way here. Kevin is a grade 'A' jack-off and got what he deserved"

"He deserved to be beat down by someone a whole foot taller than him"

Adathus went silent again as thoughts raced through his head. He's never intended to seriously injure the man or even knock him out. Once Kevin had made his remark Adathus just snapped, his instinct taking over and driving him to beat the living hell out the bastard. He could have easily killed him. The more he thought about it the more he realized she was right. He had no remorse for what he did and he knew that he just acted on instinct.

Adathus turned his hand over and looked down at his palms. He stuck his claws out and looked at his palms; black pads over red scales and those claws that looked like dull obsidian. He tried to keep them short and somewhat dulled but the way his body worked they naturally went sharp again.

"You can't talk about what you heard. Colin whipped up an NDA as soon as he saw me hit Kevin I'm pretty sure there's going to be a letter soon stating that this meeting never existed once that paper was signed."

Michelle giggled and wrapped an arm around Adathus as the last minutes of sun raced straight towards them. The massive skyscrapers of the city stood as a collective in the beam of orange sunlight.

Michelle looked into his eyes and a shiver of fear ran down her spine. She knew he was calm, but the brightness was in his eyes and just knowing what it meant was enough,"I won't. You're lucky Colin thought he was next. If you weren't seven-foot two and able to lift both of them over your head with one hand you would probably be arrested ."

"It wasn't luck, he was just playing me. The fact that his boss wanted triple what i was giving him means they just wanted to screw us. No one in their right mind was going to give them three and a half million for a patent that expires in few years. All they wanted was to make sure the company was dead as hell when I took it over. Colin was just doing his job. He already knew I was going to keep him on board. That guy could sell water to the oceans and he knows it. That NDA might as well have been his resume."

As the sun set on the city Michelle let go of her boss and walked over to the door; dimming the lights.. She wished her boss a good night and left to finalize all the paperwork for the day. Adathus picked up his briefcase and suit jacket and headed out of his office. Home was half way across town. It was going to be a long walk.
