Chapter 1: Dreams and changes: Birthday gone bad

The following morning

A boy ran through a dark, misty forest, panting loudly. He looked vaguely Asian, with a slim-but-well-toned body and a short black hair flattened down with a single white stripe.. His blue eyes looked in panic as he ran, trying to run from something he didn't know. He stumbled and fell, crashing impossibly painfully. Before he could recover, he was grabbed from behind, and was thrown to a tree.

_ "Ow..." he groaned, trying to stand up. At that point, he froze in fear, staring at the figures that chased him._

_ "What... What are you doing here?" the boy screamed, trying to deny the impossibility that stood before him. As he screamed, the figures leaped, and..._

WHAM!

** ** William M. McKnight, 15 years old, fell from his bed, waking up in the process.

"Shoot..." he groaned, sitting up, while staring around the room. The room was simple, with a small closet, a bookcase, and a desk. A wooden sword was next to the desk, sheathed.

"Stupid dreams...." he muttered, flinging the blankets back onto the bed. After a quick change of clothes, he stepped through the front door, with a small note on the kitchen table; gone out for exercise, will be back.

_ _ William(who preferred to be called Will) ran through the streets, wearing the wooden sword on his back. While running, he made quick jabs at the air, sometimes spinning around and kicking the air. He stopped at a small clearing, covered by trees. Here, he unsheathed the sword, and held it up with a look of intense concentration. Suddenly, he slashed the air with a swift stroke. The strike was followed with several quick slashes, jabs, and kicks. The air hummed under the moves, and Will was lost in thought as he slashed.

Just what is happening to me? Will wondered during the practice. Apart from the creepy+scary+unlikely dream, he felt... active. He was relatively good in self-defense lessons and in kendo, but what he was doing now was far beyond them. Every since few weeks ago, the dreams started, and along with them, several hazy somethings. Will didn't know what it exactly was: sometimes it was images, sometimes words guiding him. More often, it was nothing but feelings. When he listened, he felt quicker, and could use techniques that were beyond him, or even his instructors.

The wristwatch on his wrist beeped, reminding him that he was late.

_ Wait... today is my birthday._ Will mused as he sheathed the blade, jogging back again. While on his way back, he figured that he would pick up the mail.

Twenty minutes later, Will stood at the mailbox, his feet rooted to the spot and his eyes glued to a package. The package looked like an average mail-delivered package, except with a single difference; it had no return address, no way to tell who sent it. To be more correct, you could tell who sent it, but not where he lived.

The top of the package was written with a black marker. On it were written the words; Happy birthday, lil' bro. Here's a present for you from A.N.M.

"What.... What is.... This is..." Will stammered, staring down at the package. The initials stood for Arthur Norton McKnight, his older brother. He ran from home when he was 18, and their parents never spoke of him again.

How? When? Why? Will's brain froze, constantly repeating the unfulfilled questions.

_ I can't let mom and dad see this!_ Will thought resolutely, hiding the package. He knew from experience that his parents would destroy whatever was in the package; they burned everything Arthur owned, and all things that reminded them of him, such as photos.

With trembling fingers, Will ripped open the package, and found a plain wooden box. In the box was.... a necklace. A transparent, slightly pink hexagonal pillar-shaped crystal surrounded by thin wires was attached to a thin silver chain. It was the type of necklace that you might find in a souvenir shop.

Well, at least it won't be that noticeable. Will swiftly wore the necklace, hiding it below his shirt. Throwing the wrapper away, he boarded the elevetors.

"You are late." a thin, pale lady spoke up, as she opened the door. She was Will's foster mother, a very religious lady.

"Sorry, mother." Will mumbled, inching his way to the shower.

"Just don't be late. Also, happy birthday." his mother spoke calmly, stepping away.

Well, that was downright cheery... Will thought as he stepped into his room. But he was used to his parents' quiet and cold outlook in life. After a quick necklace-hiding, shower, change of clothes, Will stepped out. He wasn't comfortable with wearing the necklace yet, partially because he was afraid of his parents finding it.

"Sorry mom, I'm really, late, and so..." Will mumbled as he stepped toward the door.

"All right. I'll see you later." Mrs. McKnight spoke as she turned to her breakfast.

School that day passed in a blur. Will was too busy thinking about his brother, and accidentally dropped a single shard of sodium into the beaker. Fortunately, the object of the lesson today was to blow up things in the shortest time available, so Will passed the lesson with record speed.

I wonder if Arthur's still around.... Will thought as he walked out of school, musing. He was so deep in thought that he didn't see or hear a figure approaching him.

"Gotcha!" the figure laughed as it pounced and backhugged Will.

"Hailey!!" Will shouted as he fell facedown onto the road.

"You're kinda slow today. Usually you judo flip people into the dirt whenever they try that." Hailey spoke up, as she glanced down at him. She was one of the more popular girls in school, with her long brown hair and her perky personality that everyone liked. She was year older than Will, but something made her interested in Will, and the two became friends over time.

"Whoa. You're kinda zoning out real bad there, pal." Mark, Will's classmate and friend, spoke up. He was relatively average, with the only distinguishable feature of his being the eyepatch. He lost his left eye years ago, in a car accident. This led him to wearing an eyepatch all the time. Partially because it looked "cool", and partially to hide the eye.

"Shut it." Will grumbled. Today wasn't really the day for messing around, and he let them know in his voice.

"Okay, okay. Just dropping by to give you a present. Geez...." Mark muttered. He pulled out a package from a shopping bag next to him, and presented two packages.

"One from me, and one from Hailey. Happy birthday!" Mark grinned as he handed the packages. "So, do you want to go somewhere? I mean, if your parents will allow it, then...."

"Sur...." Will started, but suddenly felt dizzy. _Wha...._he suddenly felt hot, and suddenly felt.... trapped. Everything looked too close, and he suddenly felt a massive headache. It wasn't like an normal headache: his senses suddenly felt sharper, things too bright, smelly, and loud.

"Will? Are you okay?" Hailey spoke up. She just saw Will staggering lightly, and worried that he might be sick.

"I.... I left something behind! We'll do whatever later!!" Will shouted, running back into the school.

"Hey! Wa... Oh, never mind." Hailey muttered as she saw Will running off.

"You think he didn't like our presents?" Mark asked as he picked up the presents, which Will dropped in his haste.

"Of course not. But I wonder why he went off like that...." Hailey trailed off as she looked at the school.

"Well, we could just give them to him tomorrow and chew him out about it." Mark replied. Will did behave weird today, but he figured that Will was just stressed. I mean, I would be stressed with super-strict parents like that....

Will rushed into the bathroom, slamming the stall door closed and breathing deeply. The sensations became stronger, and it was now almost downright painful.

What's....going...on..? Will hazily thought as things started to get dark. The last thing he saw was the ceiling, with its toilet-papered glory.

"My lord, what is this technique? I've never seen such a technique in my life!"

_ "A technique for my successor. I've never mastered it fully, but he will, with the blade that I forged for him."_

_ "But lord... You don't have a successor!"_

_ "He definitely exists..... I've seen it. I'll guide him.... somehow. He will surpass me, and do what I failed."_

_ "But...."_

_ _ Will woke up, and found that he was sitting against the wall of the stall.

What was that? Will wondered, as he sat up. He didn't hurt that bad anymore, but he still had headaches from the overwhelming sensations.

If I run a school, I would put more air fresheners in. Will thought, and pushed open the door. When he saw the mirror, he stopped cold.

He stopped cold, because he saw a white tiger in the mirror, where he was supposed to be.
