Matt replayed the scene over in his head.

Hey, Sara, what's up? I know I haven't spoken to you much before now, but there's a reason for that. I think I first began to notice you when I met you. You're a raccoon, just like me. I've had a crush on you for a long time, and... What I mean to say is, you have a wonderful figure... No. Erm... I know you're really popular and I'm, well...

Matt grabbed his head, groaning. He couldn't think of how he would say things in his head, let alone to her. He had been anxious about this moment for months. He had decided a year previously that he would tell Sara he loved her. It was Valentine's Day, and Matt decided today was the best day to try it. He was now realizing, though, that his confidence probably wouldn't hold out for the conversation. He had best write her a note.

Matt found an index card and began to write.

_Sara,

I have always rather adored your looks. You may have noticed I hang around you a lot. This is because I reserve judgment on a person until I know them mentally. You are a very tender soul, and I have no doubt that many a male has fallen for you. I can now count myself among them. Your lithe body, your feminine charm, your quick wit, and your deep intellect have made you the popular young lady you are, and I feel attracted to you because of these things..._

The bell sounded to end Geometry II rang, so Matt quickly scrawled down, "Please tell me if we can get any closer, perhaps forge a friendship. Put your response in locker 3030."

Matt ran to the locker cages before Sara and her friends could arrive, and he slid the index card into one of the air slits of her locker. He knew the locker was hers from watching her use it, he watched her open it every day. He knew her lock combination better than his own, but he never opened her locker out of respect for her. Matt darted to Biology five minutes early, praying in his head she didn't see him.

...

During P.E., last period, Matt suddenly realized something. He hadn't put his name on the note he gave her. She had no idea from whom it came. Sara shared his P.E. class and the kids would congregate in front of the locker cages before P.E. started, so he could tell her now. Matt jogged over to Sara and approximately six others surrounding her.

"Sara," Matt said "Can I speak to you in private?"

Sara arched an eyebrow. "Who are you? Matt, right? I don't want to hear anything that you can't say in front of my friends."

"Fine." responded Matt with obvious exasperation. "You know the note in your locker, okay? Just know, I was the one who put it there."

Sara grinned. "A note in my locker? How sweet, I haven't opened my locker today. Let me go get it."

Matt's stomach twisted itself into a tight knot as Sara walked to her locker, opened it, pulled out his note, and returned. To Matt's dismay, she began to read it aloud to her friends, giggling to herself every now and again. Matt felt his cheeks burning up as Sara emphasized "young lady" and "forge a friendship". Her crew was laughing cruelly now, at how Matt could have given such a pathetic letter. Sara herself finished, and walked up to Matt.

"I'm sorry, Matt, I really am. But I'm not sexually attracted to losers." Matt knew she was softening the blow and could have been much more witty and cruel, but nonetheless, it felt as if she had torn his heart out of his chest and handed it to him. He looked at the ground, as she turned around and rejoined her little group. One thing really doomed Sara at that point. She laughed. It wasn't her normal laugh, but a cruel one, as if she extracted a large amount of pleasure from tearing him down the way she did.

Matt snapped.

Matt took three running steps and leapt into the air, landing on Sara's back and knocking her to the ground with their combined weight. She landed on her chest, not even comprehending what had just happened before Matt balled his fists and began to punch her. His fists smashed repeatedly into her back and the back of her head, driven by anger and adrenaline. He dropped his head to hers, biting large clumps of her hair and forcefully ripping them out, causing Sara to scream out in pain.

All of Sara's friends had taken several steps back, and were afraid to try and stop Matt because of the ferocity of his attacks. Matt gripped the remains of her hair and lifted her head up, smashing it down onto the blacktop repeatedly and mercifully knocking her unconscious.

Matt was vaguely aware of his gym teacher pulling him off of Sara a few minutes later, putting him into a full nelson and pinning him down. One of the students went to call 911 and several teachers had come out from all the commotion. Within the hour, many ambulances arrived and took Sara to the emergency room. After Matt calmed down, he was escorted off of the campus for his own safety.

...

Dean and his nurse stood over Sara's unconscious frame, evaluating her.

"This is horrible. In fourteen years of being in the medical practice, this is the worst beating I've ever seen."

"Indeed. Look at her back. It's covered with injuries. She could have internal bleeding, and even if she doesn't, her back's gonna be one big bruise for a long while."

"There are teeth marks at the end of the tale. It looks like the perp tried to pull it out of her. We'll have to amputate that."

"Yeah. She got some serious blows to the head too. There might be a concussion. She's gonna be coughing up blood for a while, too. And crying, probably. This is going to be immensely painful for her when she wakes up. And hair won't grow back on some of the parts of her head. She's scarred for life, this one."

"Yep. We'll have a rough time breaking the news when she wakes up."

"We don't even know how long she'll be out. It could be days for all we know. It's never been this serious."

"I will never cease to be astounded by all the hate in the world. Such a pity... Well, help me get the body to an operating table."

I wrote this as a joke for a friend, but maybe some of you will like it. It's my first time writing something like this, so bear with me.
