Gantan and Sardo were in the middle of their dinner when the appearance of the white tiger prompted them into a halt. Their jailor stood behind the transparent door, carrying something in his paws. A touch of his fingers on the control pad caused the door to open, and prompted his entrance into the cell. The occupants of the room glared at him quietly, seated on their beds. Their visitor stepped in and stood at the doorway.

"You will stand up when I enter," Rei spoke sharply. "It is a courtesy given to senior officers, foreign or otherwise. I expect it here as well. Stand up now."

His prisoners exchanged a brief look before they put their trays away and stood up in front of their respective beds. The white tiger entered the room properly after that, with the door sliding into a close behind him. A flick of his paws revealed the strange object in his paws to be a collapsible chair that he popped open and settled onto the floor.

"You may notice the lack of furniture," Rei noted, "further comforts are a privilege to be earned."

The white tiger planted his rump onto the chair he had brought for himself and sat down, arms folded over his chest. He was only wearing slacks and a sleeveless shirt that exposed his toned, striped arms for viewing. His feet were bare. His posture was perfect, measured, only an illusion of relaxation in it. His face was impassive.

"You may sit down again," the tiger said, "you are eating, and I do not wish to interrupt."

"And yet you did come just when we were eating," Gantan noted.

The tiger's face didn't flinch.

"Sir," he said. "I am to be addressed as sir."

Gantan gave the white tiger a glare, and hissed a 'sir' between pursed lips. He grabbed the plastic bowl from the tray and continued eating the soup-like thing from it with the small spoon he had been issued with along with the rest of the meal. A half-eaten bread cake and a cup of water sat on the tray on the bed next to him.

"I wished to check how it's going down," Rei mused. "I do hope that you find it agreeable."

"I'm not sure what it is, sir," said Sargo, "but it certainly beats the camp grub."

"The food served at the military detention camps is certainly rudimentary," Rei said, "yet it does provide a minimum diet. It is one kind of eating, of course, and I am not a stranger to it. I have existed on standard rations for longer than I would care to remember."

He held a pause, and watched the two men with their small plastic spoons and bowls. The food on their trays was completely palatable. He was enjoying the scent that they produced and that lingered in the cell.

"Yet food should be pleasure, not simply sustenance," the white tiger said. "It brings a certain kind of pleasure, for the senses and the mind, as well as the body. The chewiness of the bread...the spicy broth...the lovely tang of the meat in your soup. It's real meat, too. All food I eat here is produced organically, much of it even on site here at the farm. Nothing synthesized. Even the spices are real."

The lion gave his soup bowl a suspicious look and then looked at the white tiger.

"Are we meant to be impressed, sir?" Gantan said.

"I do not aim to impress you," Rei said. "What would I gain by flaunting my prosperity at you? It is a fact of life that I have done well. It means I can afford the luxury of this estate, and to eat this food, and to enjoy my life."

"You must have been generously rewarded for your service, sir," Sardo commented.

Rei gave a look at his fellow feline.

"I have earned what I have with my hard work," the General said. "That is a fact I will not deny. It has taken me years of service to reach this point. It is something to be proud of."

"Earned the power to keep us here," Sardo rumbled. "sir."

_ _

"Yes," the white tiger snapped. "Our law has for many centuries recognized the use of prisoners of war for labor. This is a natural extension of that right I have as a citizen of the Confederation."

"Is that so then?" Gantan hissed. "You hire us out, one to each citizen?"

The General's throat let out a small rumble, but he kept his face in check.

"Your placement here is a special dispensation," Rei replied. "That is all you need to know. You should be grateful that you are not kept at the camp."

"At least the camp makes sense," the lion grunted.

"That is 'sir', "Rei said.

The lion's eyes were cold in his look at the white tiger. From the corner of his eye, Rei could see Sardo tense up on his side of the room. The General remained sitting on his chair, however.

"That is 'sir', " he repeated.

"Sir", came the lion's most insincere tone.

"I see," Rei said.

The white tiger stood up swiftly.

"House, service to the prisoner quarters," the tiger spoke into the air.

"Service has been dispatched, sir," the house replied. thought its invisible audio systems.

The two prisoners watched him intently. Soon there was a soft whirr, and the door slid opened to admit one of the service units, floating on its own hover field. It was roughly cylindrical in shape, with rows of sensor clusters along its surface to allow it to navigate the house safely.

"Open waste receptacle," the tiger replied.

"Yes, sir," the robot spoke in a disembodied voice that made some lights along its circumference to light up. A shutter opening unrolled over the top surface of the robot.

"Place all your utensils and uneaten food into the waste receptacle," Rei spoke in a voice that was an unquestionable command. "Your disobedience has caused the rest of your meal to be forfeited as a punishment. That applies to you too, Sardo. Your fellow prisoner's disobedience has led into a collective punishment. You must comply or both of you will receive a more severe punishment."

"Yeah? Zap our implants, sir?" Gantan growled.

He dropped his fork onto the tray and stood up, huffing indignantly. He was tense, muscled coiling up.

"Make us squirm until we beg for mercy, sir?" the lion hissed.

The lion bared his teeth.

Rei gave him a cautious look.

"This is the final warning," he said. "Your continued disobedience will lead into a punishment."

"Gantan, let it go," Sardo spoke calmly. The tiger began to gather his own utensils onto the tray.

"Let what go, sir?" the lion sneered into the senior-ranked tiger's direction. "Afraid I'm going to get our asses in trouble, sir?"

"You will only make it worse, Gantan," Sardo said.

The tiger got up from his bed and upended his tray's contents into the waste receptacle on top of the robot before he dropped the tray inside as well.

"Thank you for being clean!" the robot said with suspicious cheer.

"Oh for fuck's sake," Gantan seethed. He slammed the food bowl onto the tray. It caused the bread to roll off the tray and much of the soup to splatter over the lion's arm, the tray and the bedding. The lion cursed. "FUCK THIS SHIT!"

"Level four, both targets!" Rei shouted.

Gantan and Sardo were both struck in place. Their tails went rigid, their backs bent, when an electric-like sensation shot down their spines. It was not exactly painful, but what followed would have been uncomfortable under any circumstances. They fell, Sardo straight onto his bed, while Gantan first collapsed heavily onto his knees before his upper body fell forward and slammed down so that he landed partially over the food tray. Soup splashed onto his mane.

"OH FUCK!" the lion growled.

"I'm sure you know this punishment from the camp," Rei spoke. He was tense, but his voice was level, as he looked at the two incapacitated prisoners in front of him. "The deterrence implants grafted onto your brainstems have fired a pulse that destabilizes the nerves leading into the voluntary muscles on your limbs. This causes instant paralysis of your arms and your legs, which means...well...this happens. But I am sure you already know how this works, don't you?"

"You...bitch..." Gantan snarled indignantly amidst the mess he had made.

"This is very disappointing," Rei continued. "I was hoping that my lenient approach would be appreciated. I can understand to a degree, yet it will not bring lenience. Your behavior is inexcusable and both of you will be punished for this."

"I apologize for this, sir," Sardo spoke in a quiet voice. He was lying on an uncomfortable angle on his bed, his four temporarily paralyzed limbs askew.

Gantan did not even speak.

"Overseer, report to prisoner quarters."

"Right away, sir," the black panther's voice filtered in.

"This room is a privilege to be earned," Rei continued his murmured speech, "your disobedience has caused it to be forfeited for the time being. You will lose your beds. You will be reduced to basic rations only. Since prisoner Gantan decided to soil his clothes, you will forfeit them as well."

"Whatever you like," the lion hissed.

Rei didn't even flinch.

"Exactly, Gantan," the white tiger said. "Exactly what I like."

Gantan muttered something inaudible under his breath. Rei did not move, nor say anything else. He waited for the black panther's arrival. The Overseer even had the thought to simulate breathlessness when he appeared, briskly paced and ready for action.

"You requested me, sir," the black panther bowed.

"Yes," Rei spoke. "They have infringed against me. They have been incapacitated and require punishment."

"I understand, sir."

"Remove the beds and other furniture," the tiger commanded the android. "Remove their clothes and wash them with the hose. Use cold water. They are only allowed water and field rations from now on."

"Yes, sir."

"Once they are washed, cuff prisoner Gantan's paws behind his back."

"Bastard!" the lion hissed.

"I would add a gag, but it would be inconvenient," Rei replied. "Proceed, Overseer."

"Yes, sir," the black panther said.

Rei picked up his chair and left the room to the echoes of the lion's grunts. He was not to go far, however, since he only departed far enough to settle himself down just outside the transparent door. He assumed the same impassive position as before, arms folded, watching the events that took place inside the cell of his two prisoners.

"Yeah, right...won't even do it himself..." Gantan spat as he was picked up effortlessly by the black panther, under his still limp arms, and dispatched on his back on the floor next to the bed, "won't get his paws dirty with us..."

"Would you just be quiet, Gantan?" Sardo hissed. "We are already in trouble."

"So what's the point?" the lion huffed.

"It can only ever get worse," the tiger replied.

Sardo, too, was lifted off his bed and rolled to the floor, as if he was as easily disposable as one of the pillows that followed. The panther robot's neatness programming appeared to be less than fastidious, considering the pile of bedclothes that soon formed. His two charges remained slumped on where they'd been left.

"I can't feel my ass," Gantan grumbled.

"It will pass," Sardo replied.

The lion growled.

"Fuck," he flapped the floor with his tail, which was still functional.

"And there's him sitting and enjoying seeing us like this..." Gantan glared at the sight of the tiger on his chair.

"I am sure that is also his purpose for us," Sardo replied quietly.

"And not getting his paws dirty..."

"You are dirty," the tiger said.

Gantan huffed.

"This sucks," the lion harrumphed.

The black panther disassembled the lightly constructed beds swiftly, and carried them out of the room, one in turn. Then he returned for the prisoners.

"I will remove your clothing now," the black panther said, "I advice you to stay still during it."

"We don't seem to be going anywhere, are we?" the lion huffed.

The black panther surprised them somewhat by twisting one of his fingers. The tip parted and revealed a sharp cutting blade with a curved tip, almost like that of a claw.

"That's handy," Sardo mused, when he watched the black panther put the blade into use on Gantan's coveralls.

"Jack of all trades," the lion sounded less than impressed.

The blue coveralls were cut into pieces, along his arms and the front before he was once again unceremoniously rolled about and then out of his clothing. The white underpants and shirt suffered a similar fate under the black panther's cutting claw, and the pieces of cloth were promptly disposed into the mobile service unit's awaiting maw.

"Thank you for being neat!" said the robot.

Sardo did not see it useful to resist the treatment he got, a mirror act of cutting cloth and tearing it away from his hide. Afterwards he found himself sitting by the now nude lion as he was before, placed against the wall.

"It is now time to wash you as per my orders," The Overseer announced.

"Got that in-built too?" the lion snorted.

"No, I have a hose," said the black panther.

The Overseer stepped into the shower booth on its niche and opened a small wall panel through some hidden command or other, since there were no external controls to release it. From this orifice he withdrew the flexible transparent tube and then assumed a position.

"THAT'S COLD! DAMNIT!"

"EGH!"

Even Sardo wasn't entirely quiet once they were dosed down with cold water from the black panther's spray. They rustled their manes and squirmed, reflexively, under the splash of uncomfortable water that soon had them soaked. The black panther did not offer them towels or a chance to use the shower cabinet's drying functions. It left two very wet, cross felines to sit on the floor, and yet he still wasn't entirely done, for he had to leave the room briefly to fetch a pair of paw cuffs. They were of relatively slim construction, double hoops padded from the inside, and were snapped on without further words from him.

"All has now been done," the black panther announced, before giving a look through the door at the white tiger whom still observed. Rei stood up, once he had seen the gesture from the black panther, and entered the room once again.

"Release level 4 deterrence," the white tiger spoke.

The relief was instant and visible. Neither captive feline could resist the urge to wriggle fingers and toes, and Sardo took especial pleasure in rolling his shoulders. Gantan's actions were more limited, considering his paws were now securely locked behind his back, but that did not stop him.

"I thought we were looking for a mutual punishment," the lion glared up to the white tiger whom was still looking at them from a slightly distance. Still not far enough to avoid being spit at, should the lion really put his throat into it, Gantan thought roughly.

"I have no doubt it will be," Rei said. "I shall leave you to think about it now. Breakfast will be served tomorrow. Your training regime shall start tomorrow. I will not let you to become even less conditioned than you are now. I know the camp does not allow for much physical activity."

"That is most generous, sir," Sardo hurried to say.

"We shall see how you think about it tomorrow," Rei said. "Farewell. Come, you two, let's leave them."

"Yes, sir," the black panther bowed.

"Thank you for being clean!" the service bot announced.

The three filed out into the corridor and disappeared once they stepped beyond the field of vision offered by the transparent door.

The silence that fell seemed especially quiet.

"Don't even say anything," Gantan huffed.

"I wasn't going to," Sardo replied.

The lion slumped his back against the floor and grumbled. He felt cold, wet, miserable, and hungry.
