#1 of Ace

Book one out of 6 of the Alpha Squad Chronicles, this is the story of how Ace started off as the leader of Team One and, eventually, became leader of Alpha Squad. Put it on adult due to future content. Will add more tags later on. My first story on here so criticism is wanted.

Team One

_ _

"Rex, Cutter, Greenhorn, you are Team One. Heavy, Shade, and Shadow, you're Team Two. Scorch, Cyclops, Gunner, you're Team Three. Tex, Fives, Blaze, you're Team Four."

The commander continued to make up the teams, though I was glad I was part of Team One. My name is Rex, leader of Team One. Unlike the regular grunts who get deployed to Godforsaken countries and probably get attacked by the lovely cannon fodder... or better known as locals. If only we could just glass those countries, but our lovely government wants to keep them alive. Idiots.

_ _

So... introduction to the amazing and extremely bad ass Team One. There's me, Ace. I'm the leader. Then there's Cutter. He's our hacker. Then there's Deadeye, our sniper. Anyways, we are the best at doing what we do.

_ _

But we are Team One... and eventually we will become one of the best squads that will ever be created during the war in Iraq.

Operation: Cobra

_ _

"Let my aim be true, guide my bullet into the heart of tyranny, protect my people from the evil that has gripped this land in fear."

It was Operation Cobra, the operation we were taking part in to assassinate some Al Qaeda leader whose name has a lot of Als and a lot of Muhs. So here we are, sitting on the roof of some building in the dark, Greenhorn totally freaking me out.

Cutter sighs heavily and says, "I hate this job sometimes." And as I was about to respond, Greenhorn decided to cheer up Cutter in the worst way possible.

"Relax, it's like back home, hiding in the underbrush, the only sign of life you show is your breathing, the cold air chilling you to the bone, your target coming into view, and, taking one last breath, you pull that trigger and fire... it makes me feel so alive!"

Cutter stares at him before he looks at me and asks, "Permission to speak freely team leader?"

"Permission granted."

"Greenhorn is now freaking me out."

And the part that will always freak me out the most; Greenhorn laughs and says, "Greenhorn was just a temporary name in a desperate time. Call me Deadeye, a better and scarier name."

Jesus Christ... can this get any worse? Yes. As we sit there, I remembered my mom used to say 'Bad things come in threes.' Well... Bam! Bam! Bam!

Deadeye fired three shots before standing up and, with a smile, he says, "Mission complete, let's go."

"Wait... that's it? You fired three times and it's over," interjects Cutter as he stands up, looking at Deadeye like he's insane.

"Yeah, I killed Ali Allahn Muhamud, (told you it had to many Als and Muhs), I killed his two royal guard, and now it's time for us to go."

I just sat there before, with a laugh, I look at Cutter and say, "C'mon, if it is over, it's over. So let's go before we get shot at."

We soon got out of there. And if there was a scoreboard, Team One was at the top. Team Two didn't have anything on us. But if War has taught me anything, it was this; things change.

Operation: Sand Beast

_ _

_ _

"And when the Sand Beast calls, the people of the sand flee in terror, their very souls at risk of being damned in the Sand Pit forever..."

_ _

"Cutter, what the fuck are you reading?"

Cutter looks up at me before he puts his notepad away, rolling his eyes a bit before he says, "I was writing a Star Wars fanfic about the Tusken Raiders and-"

Deadeye, who was manning the turret, suddenly interrupts him and says, "I don't mean to interrupt your Nerd Side of the Whatever, but we have two hostiles moving in on our location. We either should engage or abort."

I slow the vehicle to a stop before I look at Cutter. "Can you drive?"

"Well... yeah, I can-"

"Good cause I got a body count to keep up on. So you drive and I'll unload."

"I thought Deadeye was unloading?"

"Don't get smart with me."

So Cutter and I switch places before he starts to move again. The soon to be dead Tangos were getting closer... so I roll down the window and, grabbing my M-16, I get myself ready for battle.

But... I hate to say this, but we didn't even get the chance to fight... "Um sir... I spotted two British..."

Right before he could finish, the guns and rockets of the gunships fired, tearing apart the two technicals like they were aluminum cans. It was a terrifying sight, but the fortunate thing was that they were on our side... British gunships always seemed to surprise everyone now and then.

So, after the two gunships disappeared, the three began to move out once more. Cutter, with an irritated growl, asks me, "Hey Rex, where are we headed anyways?"

"Some abandoned airport somewhere. Supposed to be this way and stuff."

"Wait... why did they send just us?"

I thought about it for a moment. He made a good point, if it was so damn important, why send three guys?

"Because we are the best." We are the best, but I knew what this was; our suicide mission. If we couldn't do it, no one could do it... without the assistance of tanks and bombs and heavy artillery. And we would have none of that.

Cutter simply went back to driving, but Deadeye chirped in, as always. "Don't worry Cutter, we'll make it through this. Sniper's honor."

Deadeye may be a cold hearted son of a bitch killer, but he had a way with words at times. "Thanks Deadeye... I know we'll survive this... as a team, we either all make it or none of us do."

Deadeye had a knack for words, but his ability to respond to someone talking needed work. So, after this very long drive of silence, we finally arrived at the airport...

Only to find it was utterly destroyed. The hangars looked like they had been hit by long range artillery and bombed, the runways had craters, and there are bodies scattered on the ground. Why would they send us to an abandoned airfield?

So we pull in somewhere, if it was a former parking space, I had no idea... anyways, we pull in and, as I get out, I look around a bit, wondering if there was anyone still alive here. It was way too quiet, the only sound being Cutter and Deadeye getting out of the jeep.

"Sir, what's the mission? I mean, if it was to take the airport, I say it was a success," jokes Deadeye with a laugh.

"We were supposed to recover some Intel... but the way this base looks, I doubt there's anything to recover from-"

It was so sudden. As I sat there, looking around, there was a flash, like light hitting some sort of glass or reflector... and then I felt my chest burning and pain. As I fell to the ground, I heard the bang...

"Sniper," shouts Cutter as Deadeye grabs his rifle, getting ready to take on the enemy sniper. It was so strange, the feeling of being shot. My chest was heavy and wet, it was hard to breathe... I was struggling to stay awake.

As Cutter fires his M-16, Deadeye takes aim and, as he looks around, he must have spotted what I did; the scope glare. And then he fired...

"Target down," he says before Cutter rushes towards me. "Rex, Rex are you alright?"

I look towards him and, struggling to stay awake, I tell him, "There's... there's no pain..."

And that's when my world went black. "Rex! Rex stay with us!"

His voice was so strange, it sounded far off... but I felt at peace.
