This story is old. Like, super two years kind of old. One of the first pieces I've ever written for this site and (obviously) forgot to upload. Please excuse the lousy execution or whatever grammar mistakes you encounter. I gave it a quick editing pass, but some errors might've still escaped my grasp. Anyway, enjoy!

Shareek flew ahead of his mate, clenching his talons around the loot he carried to make sure none of the spoils fell upon the buildings rolling below him. Today had been fruitful. They sneaked inside the midst of a human city and stole the best of what the food market had to offer. No Storm Crows -contraptions created by humans to hunt fliers down- followed them, as far as Shareek's sharp eyes could see. That was relieving. Humans took an unusual interest in them during these last few days, sending their flying crafts after their tails time and time again. Shareek couldn't fathom why. He just wanted a nest to settle into and provide nourishment for his mate, nothing else.

He fanned his broad wings, ascending to the higher currents. The wind felt particularly pleasant under his feathers, but not nearly as fulfilling the caress of his mate. She flew by his side, touching wings with him, diving below or soaring around in repetitive loops that radiated happiness.

His mate released a joyful shrill when golden fields replaced the scattered homes of the humans. She wanted to return to the skies, and Shareek followed despite the fatigue stinging his joints with every beat of his great wings. He felt heavy and clumsy. The lump of meat clutched firmly in his powerful beak prevented most vocalizations, and his talons carried a fruit and a fish, the only prey he managed to snatch before the humans intervened with their awful contraptions.

Shareek joined his mate in the sunny sky, almost tempted to snatch the strange reflective object stuck between her clenched talons. It was neither feathery nor leathery, but shiny. And it had strange depictions woven around the central part. Human crafts were odd like that. What his mate intended to do with the sun-splicer and the other objects clutched in her other leg extended beyond Shareek's understanding.

She shrieked softly, diving down in an instant. Shareek blinked, beating his wings against the wind, refusing the challenge. The female had none of that. She rolled under him, pulling at his many chest feathers. Shareek ignored her. He looked down, scanning the ground for any potential prey. He wanted to provide more than scraps. Prey became scarcer. Soon, there would be nothing left in the fields.

Raykir flapped his wings hard. One of his feathers came loose. Did she...?

His mate flew ahead, shrilling her victory. She tried to fit the dark feather somewhere around the back of her neck, wobbling like a fledgling in the air until the feather fled her beak. Shareek knew she wouldn't like that. He prepared for another assault, but this time her touch was careful and intimate. She preened his neck, clacking her beak in a very amorous manner. Shareek suppressed the rising urge to return the affection, fixing his eyes on the verdant forest stretching ahead of them. They could mate there, away from prying eyes.

He sailed into the high skies, allowing the breeze to do all the work for a few moments before his mate dropped on his back, her strong talons pinning his wings into place.

Shareek didn't fight back. They fell together, grabbing at each other with everything they could. The mating dance awakened slumbering urges, but they performed it often enough to resist its pull. Shareek reluctantly pushed his mate away, tightening his beak around the slipping morsel. He snapped once, twice, then felt it slip his grasp. He surged after it, talons clenching with anticipation. Too bad he couldn't use them. He lunged for the meat when he reached it, snapping at nothingness. He tried again, then flared his wings to give way to his mate. She returned with a shrilling screech, golden beak clacking angrily.

It is your fault. You dropped it.

Shareek swallowed the bitter taste of failure and beat his aching wings. He kept alert for anything worthy, but the endless fields stretching below them grew only what humans allowed them to: useless vegetation. He hoped the cover of trees wouldn't be as barren underneath its vast canopy.

The forest taunted them with its thick embrace. Shareek kept just above the top, eyes fixed on the tail of his mate. He allowed the thrumming of life to steal his attention, paying too much attention to the buzzing of insects or the chirping of the other birds, too late realizing his mate was no longer flying ahead of him. Shareek speared through the canopy, desperately calling for his half. Branches stretched from everywhere, beating and tangling his wings. He fell, twisting and screeching against the storm of leaves until the ground embraced him.

His head felt strange. Shareek shook off the swirling feeling, adjusting on his legs. He scanned through the tree line. Nothing. He extended his wings to take flight when a familiar shriek reached his ears. He turned to stare into his mate's half-opened beak. She cooed affectionately, picking and preening around his neck. Shareek enveloped her with a wing and pushed the fish closer to her legs. She inspected around the bloody punctures, then ripped into the flesh with her claws. It was an inviting sight. Succulent meat, filled with delicious nutrients. Shareek inched his head closer, pulling at a fin before he dug his beak into his mate's chest. He could wait.

He preened her halfway through her wings when she stopped him with a curt screech. Shareek pulled back, staring at the bloody fish head dangling in the female's beak. She pushed the prize towards him. Shareek declined with his own screech, only to have the remains shoved inside his parted beak. He snapped it in half, swallowing and pushing back the remains.

Yours, he chirped suggestively, nuzzling around the curved tip of the female's beak. She remained unyielding, wings extended, chest flared. Shareek finished the scraps rather reluctantly. His mate and the eggs she carried were important, not him. Once he rubbed his beak on the grass, he sampled the fruit. None of the birds liked the strident taste, turning the golden fruit into a plaything before deciding to inspect the other trinkets.

Shareek found the empty circle quite fascinating. He picked and poke around the hard edges of the silver bracelet. So shiny. He wanted it. With a quick tug, he lifted it off the ground and fit one talon through. It was too loose for his legs, but just the right fit for his neck, as he quickly noticed. He picked it in his beak and walked towards his mate, adorning her with the shiny metal circle. Chirping her approval, she gave her mate a bit of attention before looking back at the image-taker. It had many sheets, each featuring lands they had seen from the sky. She flipped through several forests and two stretches of water before she found two looming mountains rising above a field of emerald trees. Tilting her head closer to the black scribbles, she poked and blinked at the strange surface. Shareek joined in, gripping and scratching with a black talon. Rifts formed under his claw, and both eagles drew back, screeching. What a bizarre craft. They ripped it to shreds and turned their inquisitive eyes towards the last item. It had a strange, square shape, and was tough as a rock. Shareek poke the thing, beak sliding along the smooth edge until he found an opening. He gripped, securing the stubborn prey with a talon.

And then he pulled. Light spilled from the object, along with a strange buzzing. It was alive! Shareek flapped his wings. He grabbed it in a talon, took off in three beats and twisted mid-air, hurling the light-emitting menace as far as he could. Nothing happened. Perhaps the craft was harmless, but it was no use to ponder. He saved his mate, who was now all over him, a flurry of wings and very insistent beak rubs. Shareek clacked his beak, chirping delightfully under her caress. They touched beaks often, nipping around each other and chirping with affection.

Tucking his great wings to his sides, Shareek dove under his mate, who adjusted her precarious balance with a shuffle of her dark brown wings. Shareek pushed his head under her tail, blinking. He noticed every edge and nuance of every feather, but he could barely smell the female's rich pheromones. Nevertheless, he rotated his head to face her pulsing cloaca and gently pressed the curved tip of his beak against it. She tightened in an instant, shrilling expectantly. Shareek circled around the exposed flesh, touching and prodding until his mate got adjusted to the feel of his presence.

Then he pushed. Half his beak was swallowed by the hungry folds, urging it deeper. Shareek closed his eyes, protecting them against the onslaught of feathers. Lust enflamed him as he clacked his beak inside his mate, tasting her receptive aroma before pulling back out, golden beak glazing with her fluids.

The female's feathers rose. Her wings trembled, and her tail shot up. Two heavy spasms wracked her form before she surrendered to the trembling with a wild screech. White essence oozed out of her folds, rich and laden with fertility. Shareek answered with his own cry, latching onto his mate's back like a savage predator happening upon a helpless fawn. He flapped his wings rapidly to maintain balance while his tail fanned, pushing his oversensitive cloaca against his deliciously receptive mate.

She wasn't prepared. Shrilling, she dropped to the side, wing beating under one of Shareek's talons. He removed it immediately, flying into the air to land at his mate's side. She stared at him with brilliant golden eyes, blinking only once. Then, her head tilted, pointing towards her still-raised tail. Shareek was all too eager to comply. He straddled her again, desperately trying to stay on top of her. His talons slipped along the smooth feathers, flexing for better grip. His mate expressed her discomfort with a screech, but Shareek was too focused on his purpose to notice. Their cloacas rubbed once, sending both eagles off balance.

Shareek flapped his wings. Dust rose around them, and several feathers flew outside the vortex. He pushed again, and again, until a melting jolt released the caged seed from his clenching depths. A surge went through him, ruffling every feather. Another followed. Shareek froze, tensing under the bestial lust slithering towards his tail.

With a feral shrill, Shareek released. He pressed himself as hard as he could against his mate, bridging any gap between the two organs as his scalding seed flowed into his mate. The female trembled all over, wings extended. She milked him down to the last drop, ending the tie with an abrupt lurch.

Fluids sputtered from her rapidly clenching hole as she lay on the side, hungrily breathing the warm forest breeze. Shareek wobbled towards her, still feeling like the earth shift and quiver under his unsteady legs. He crouched, laying a protective wing over his mate. They spent a few moments in silence, with only the suave chirps of the songbirds and the buzzing of insects disturbing the song of the wind.

Shareek closed his eyes, almost dozing off before a skreek roused him from his slumber. His mate stood on her legs, head straight, wing tips raising towards the canopy.

Time to leave.

Shareek bowed his head, nuzzling into her chest. She was right. Finding a proper nest was as important as mating. He basked into her affection for a few heartbeats before the sky swallowed them both.

The two golden eagles continued their journey. Over plains and fields they flew, stopping only to rest and hunt. The journey was long and tedious. Winds did not always agree with their chosen path, and human establishments littered every potential cliff. They flew until flat lands turned into rolling hills, and hills lengthened into jagged, snow-crested mountains, where the sky was savage and grey. These cliffs were ideal for nesting. Sturdy enough to protect from the bitter winds, and wide enough for a whole family to inhabit. The pair inspected several places and even mated on the jagged stones before settling inside an alcove. A wide forest stretched at the tips of their talons, wild and untouched. Behind them, hollows and slanted edges bent into natural nests. Shareek screeched, quickly joined in by his mate. They looked upon their domain, cuddled into each other.

Finally, they both found a place worthy to call home.
