#2 of Steele's New Life In Nome

Decided to change the name of this short chapter to 'Steele's Fate', seeing as there is nothing to do with a family in this story, and the story this is a prequel for is titled something different.

This is just a short prequel to a planned sequel of my story 'Jenna's Justice - The Aftermath', which I wrote as a sequel to Thakur's 'good' ending of his Balto's Challenge series. As all rights go to him, I will delete this and the planned sequel if he asks me to. However, if he does not, then enjoy.

A dark, long shadow cast itself through the thin layer of moonlight that seeped through the windows. It fell on a large, sleeping malamute, who was shaking and shivering in his sleep. As the only occupant in the entire shack, the malamute was, for all intents and purposes, alone. For the time being, that is. Normally, this dog would have another with him, but, in a random twist of fate, he was allowed to be home alone for the night.

A black figure crept up to the monochrome canine, being as still and silent as the grave.

A floorboard creaked, causing the figure to stop.

The malamute, however, just whimpered and rolled over, still asleep. Either he was a deep sleeper, or just used to the noises. Not caring why the malamute didn't wake up, the dark figure was just glad that it happened.

The figure finally reached the malamute. Grinning, baring razor sharp teeth, the figure slowly moved his mouth closer to the malamute's neck. In the little bit of light that was in the room, one could make out a coat consisting of dark grey/brown fur, with a lighter underbelly.

At the sound of the figure's breathing, the malamute opened his eyes slowly, and glanced at his side. He suddenly jolted up with a yelp! Backing away from the mysterious figure, the malamute stared at him. The figure just casually followed him, teeth still bared in an unsettling grin.

"W-who are you?!" the malamute shouted.

"Oh, you know who I am, dog. After all, you did beat me and belittle me for the past five years."

The dog whimpered, before he stopped. He looked behind him, only to find he had backed himself into a corner. He had trapped himself!

"But_now_, I can finally extract my revenge."

With that, the figure leapt forward. The malamute screamed.

Waking up screaming, Steele looked around. It was still night. Calming down, the malamute rested his head between his paws. He hadn't had that dream for a long while. Not since he had revealed his feelings to Balto. Whimpering, Steele put a paw over his eyes, and wept silently. He was glad he was alone. While he was sure Nikki, Kaltag and Star wouldn't care that he was crying, the monochrome dog didn't want to have anyone looking at him as he sobbed himself to sleep.

Lowering his paw, Steele looked at the window. It was still a good three hours before dawn. Sighing, Steele closed his eyes, trying to go back to sleep. He had a big day tomorrow. He always had a big day the next day. But tomorrow was something special. Tomorrow was Balto's birthday. And Steele knew _exactly_what to get his wolf-dog.
