#1 of Ultimate Furry Crossover Information

Just starting out my newest Choose Your Own Adventure series with a bit of background information. No votes are needed just yet - that will come after October 31st. Right now, I'm laying the groundwork, to build hype and let people know a little about the setting. Providing this information also makes it possible for readers to toss in their own ideas early on, before corrections become harder.

One of the Big Three legitimate players in the grand cosmic game of diplomacy and politics, the Sol Imperium is the seat of human power in the Selected Universe (hitherto known as the SU). Located almost exactly in between the Aniverse and the Realm of Magic, the Sol Imperium is in an ideal location for interstellar trade with these and other Universal Sectors.

Humans, the primary inhabitants as well as the rulers of the Sol Imperium, are a diverse and fractious lot, not known for their unity. The Imperium itself is theoretically ruled by a Supreme Emperor, a theoretically infallible, semi-religious figure who reigns from a throne on Earth connected to a vast and intricate network of computers that allow complete access to everything that takes place within the Imperium's borders. The truth of the matter, of course, is that no single human being could possibly handle such an enormous workload, and the Emperor typically spends much of his time in leisure, allowing the outlying areas of his realm to govern themselves except in the most extreme cases of lawbreaking, or outright and blatant contempt for Imperial authority.

Due to the odd nature of the Sol Imperium's government, actual rulership of the Imperium generally falls to various noble houses, each related (at least in theory) by direct blood to the Emperor himself. Thus, while the Imperium is a Empire on paper, in reality it functions more like an especially byzantine series of republics interconnected by extensive trade and military agreements, and united by aristocratic rulers that share a common heritage. Because of the presence of so many nobles, it is rather common to encounter princes and princesses in each planet of the realm, either in residence or traveling for the sake of adventure.

Also due to the odd nature of the Sol Imperium's government, technology levels can vary quite widely between planets. While theoretically any technology available to one planet will be available to all of them, in reality only the very wealthy on the core worlds of the Imperium can truly access cutting edge technology at all times. Outlying worlds and poorer citizens generally have to make do with whatever they can get.

The dominant military force of the Sol Imperium is the Space Navy and its ground forces, the Space Marines. Every ship in the Space Navy is a massive investment of time and resources, and so there are not that many of them active at any given time (a similar situation found in most of the rest of the SU). Very frequently, the Sol Imperium prefers to use genetically enhanced humanoforms rather than baseline humans as the commanders of these vessels, since these humanoforms tend to be designed to function at higher levels than normal humans, and most military-grade humanoforms are almost completely and unquestioningly loyal to the Imperium (civilian-made humanoforms, on the other hand, do not receive the same level of indoctrination).

Some high-ranking captains of the Sol Imperium:

Captain Hunter: A genetic construct from Earth, produced through human-canine morphing, appearing like a golden retriever. Also has super speed. A reliable commander, and well-loved by his crew, but not especially bright. However, Hunter excels in delegation, having an almost supernatural ability for assigning the right person to the right job. He is also considered an excellent teacher, and so his ship typically has a significant number of pubescent students aboard, learning the first steps of becoming part of the Space Navy themselves.

Captain Lady: Another canine-human genetic construct, Lady appears like a cocker spaniel. She is sensible, no-nonsense, and knows how to motivate her crew to its best effect. However, Lady has an especial weakness for obeying humans, something that was especially reinforced when she was being subliminally trained in her birth tank, and so her crew assignment very deliberately avoids using any humans at all, since she would have such a hard time giving them proper orders. Instead, she is regularly assigned a variety of otherwise loose cannons, talented but undisciplined, and her organizational skills tend to keep them in line, using them to their best effect. She relies heavily on her first mate (also her literal mate), Mister Tramp, for a great deal of confidence and support, and lets him lead most away missions. Tramp is noted as a highly-adventurous sort, a tough fighter, and a well-liked officer. He is also noted for his lecherous tendencies, much to the consternation of his much more conservative mate (though it is rumored that she likes to watch...).

Captain Balto: Modeled after the genes of numerous heroic dogs of Earth's past, and given the name of one of the more famous of these heroic canines, Captain Balto is a serious, responsible, and competent commanding officer. Unlike many other ship captains, Balto prefers to avoid violence whenever possible, or at least to minimize it, and so has developed a remarkable and well-deserved reputation as a diplomat. Because of his tendency to avoid the "nuclear option" whenever possible, Balto is also the captain most commonly assigned superheroes from Earth and its surrounding systems - humans with enough personal power to be living weapons when deployed. He is trusted sufficiently to know when to make use of these high-powered individuals, in case the situation truly warrants it.
