Jae And Lagunta start out reading a strange letter, which they come across in an ancient ruin. Something Malevolent is lurking within these ruins. Something that has claimed the one who wrote the letter and possibly many more in an attempt to guard this mysterious place. What will Jae and Lagunta do to survive and who is behind the mysterious deaths.

Arious is full of strange wonders that only can be described to a certain degree in order to get the full grasp of these strange lands one must see them first hand. That is what my ears had been told since I was extremely little. Well I suppose there is some truth to be gleaned from this as I have seen many a strange thing since I left my residence in the capitol long ago. Similar to the games I would play when I was little or the fireside stories that were told along with those tales I dissected when my elders spoke on the porch of our house. Yes those many stories became a reality for me as I walked the treacherous roads from one town to the next. Great evils lurk alongside the roads as well as on them whether that is a bandit or worse one of the carnivorous animals that live in the woods that have ventured out onto our crude roads to find a meal. Many a person calls these animals a monster, but I refuse as they are obviously a part of the makeup of this world of ours and we as sentient beasts have forced ourselves into their domain. There are also tales of greater beasts within the wilderness that I have yet to see due to staying close to the road for so long. Tomorrow I will explore further into the wilderness and figure out if these rumors are true.

Sincerely jack of Jangala rank 256 of 20 million souls Thomas Master merchant of the Thomas Plutocracy.

Two young males were within a vast ruin that was on a monumental scale beyond eithers comprehension. The ruin was located atop a mountain located with a vast chain of hills and other mountains that were covered in a bank of fog. The reason the two entered the forgotten facility was to locate food. Unfortunately what they found instead was a skeletal body of a humanoid creature with feline characteristics the bones that made up the tail far from their original resting place. Strewn across the floor from time and animals that ravaged the body long ago. Tattered clothes stained with ancient blood were still clinging to their former owner's bones. The one who read the letter out loud had a grimace on his face as this was his first time encountering a dead body. His eyes were a murky green ocean parted by slits in the center. These eyes gave off emotion as if they were possessed by a strong desire to find something in this world. Short golden hair adorned his head with a single pale yellow streak through the center of his bangs all the way to the same point on the back of his head. His baggy traveler clothes made a swishing noise as he looked over to his friend and began to speak.

"Well I suppose he found the beasts he was looking for then."

His friend who's appearance was in stark contrast to his in almost every way possible from his curly black and white hair, to the crystal white eyes that seemed to have a rainbow refracting within them after every blink of the eye. A simple vest adorned his upper body and was cut off at the shoulders and despite having the capacity to cover his chest the vests buttons remained undone. He also wore a simple pair of pants with only a single figure adorned on the front of his waste that resembled a snapping turtle. His body was a sight to behold as lines of tattoos were etched into his chest, shoulders, arms and even a few on his face. Some of the tattoos were words and others were strange hexagonal shapes. The largest was of a pentagram with a strange mathematical formula that could be seen partially at the neck and just above his midsection where the vest and pants parted slightly. The odd looking fellow thought seriously about what his friend had just said before uttering a reply

"Yeah but he didn't get to pass on any stories like I'm sure he was intending to by watching the beasts of this land Instead he's very dead."

"Anyway we need to get moving we can give this letter to one of the Thomas we meet... they are always going on about how important their damn paperwork is." The blond haired one quickly said back

"Yeah well this guy's report is way overdue... I wonder how long ago it was that he died?" the blond haired fellow said to himself

Looking as if he was in intense thought over the question, the tattooed man folded his arms and closed his eyes in order to glean more out of what he had just heard his friend read aloud

"Hmm... well judging by his rank and the number of souls the Thomas have now..."

"Well?"

Somehow the man with tattoos had caused himself to go into a sweat from thinking so hard and then shouted proudly

"I have no idea!"

The Blond haired one now dumbfounded by his friend's honest yet unhelpful words clenched his fists tightly in order to suppress the anger welling up inside him.

"Gah... Jaka! You're really quite annoying sometimes you know that... I mean really if you don't know stop making such a show as if u do."

Raising his voice to match the one with blond hair the tattooed warrior gets further impatient with his compatriot

"Shut up! It's not like you've got any better ideas on how to figure out when that piece of parchment was written either."

The young adventurer sighs as he becomes disinterested with his tattooed friends obsession with the letter.

"I don't even care about the parchment! We came here for food and hopefully to find some water that does not have to be boiled every time you want to drink any. The only reason I have any desire for the paper is to turn it in to one of those stupid cats who want to make a buck off of everything and everyone for some stupid title in their homeland."

Equally tired of the conversation the tattooed man lets out an overdrawn sigh in order to release the anger pooling in his chest.

"Yeah well at least they have a homeland stupid... or should I say Jaka! Seeing as your always calling me that?"

At this the Foxari male points his finger directly at his partner and roars,

"Don't think that just because I'm on your stupid payroll I won't just up and walk out of here! No one talks about my peoples circumstances got it! Attacking me is one thing but bringing up and mocking my people is quite another."

The tattooed man waves his hands defensively in front of himself trying to avoid further conflict

"I got it, I got it! Sheesh you're always so touchy for a Child of Kumiho... aren't your people supposed to be full of folksy wisdom and keepers of magic or some such nonsense?"

"Grrrrr.... Hrmph.... Regardless of the stereotypes you carry of my people we should really get going to the next area and hope for better results." Says the blond haired adventurer

"Yeah you're probably right... and take it easy Jae! I don't have anything personal against your clan... although if they are all as touchy as you are I can see why people got rid of them like they did."

The last part of the sentence the tattooed warrior says in a hushed tone despite intending for Jae to hear it anyway.

"What was that Lagunta? Huh? You got something to say? Jaka!"

Jae storms off in a rigid manner stomping his feet thoroughly upon the stone floor as he simultaneously puffed out his chest and swung his arms back and forth angrily.

"Jae if you keep that stance about you you'll get stuck looking like that and then you'll never find a pretty lady to understand you!"

"Jaka! Shut up Lagunta."

Jae storms out of the room even angrier than before and begins shouting down the hallways

"Alright if there's any damned monsters about get the hell out of my way! I'll slay the first thing I see I swear it."

Lagunta now in a sweat from his friend's demeanor sighs as he shouts chasing after him,

"Wait Jae they don't deserve anything your about to do to them. Wait up!"

Jae envelops himself in a blue flame as he now charges down the connected hallway, as he goes the hallways ignited with a mixture of light and shadow. Lagunta rushes down the hallways after him and his tattoos begin to glow as if they are expecting something to happen from the young Foxari's direction. Jae lets out a mighty shout as he unleashes some sort of attack from his now fully flaming form that is enveloped in azure light distorting his face and body.

"Fox Fire!"

Jae causes a massive pillar of flame to spiral up from the floor and then launch into the darkness ahead of him searing the vegetation and igniting the dust that was accumulating over an inconceivable number of centuries. Suddenly the pillar of flame hits its mark and a loud screeching is heard from the re-darkened hallway.

"Yeah take that you stupid vermin!"

"You... you did all that... for a rat?"

Lagunta sighs slightly before Jae turns and glares at him with terrifying vigor in his eyes that is magnified by his still ignited form.

"I wasn't aiming for the rat you idiot! There is something far bigger lurking in these shadows than that little thing you just saw.

"Yeah... it's called your paranoia and man is it getting over the top."

Jae was about to shout at Lagunta once again when a malevolent laughter was heard coming from the direction that Jae just fired. Slowly lumbering footsteps were heard approaching the pair of frightened compatriots.

"Who the hell are you?"

Lagunta asks with a massive lump in his throat fear growing feverishly in the back of his mind as to who or what was lurking in the shadows. Jae erupts even further in flames as the feel of desperation overcomes his demeanor. The ignition of flames causes the shadows to erode even further and a pair of eyes can be seen in the darkness ahead of them. The eyes seemed strangely full of pain and sorrow for such a dark and fearful laugh. The eyes of this being were the color of ice with a blue reflection coming off of them. Slowly the eyes pulled away from the shadows and enveloped into the form of a young teenage boy around sixteen years of age. He was wearing the lower half of what looked like were once a full set of robes. The pants were adorned with blue violets in a pattern similar to falling rain as the petals fell away from the main flower in the middle of each pant leg. The teens face seemed to be at the verge of crying despite having a smile that was almost forced as his demeanor seemed to change from sadness to rage. The smile turned to teeth being bared; his canines were noticeably longer than average and gave him a very feral appearance with the light and shadow licking off of his face.

"Get out of my home!"

Lagunta looked at Jae and then at the teenager as he said,

"Your home?"

The teen's demeanor became even more irate as he shouted even more forcefully than before,

"Yes! My Home... Get out of here! It's mine damn it... you... you can't have it..."

Jae takes a deep breath and then sighs loudly

"Look kid we aren't here to steal... whatever this place is that you call your home. We are merely here looking for anything useful... especially food and water. Would you happen to know if there is any of that around here?"

"Please leave! I will not ask again... The next action I take is killing the two of you like that damned cat who came lurking in here before you idiots."

The teens hands and lower arms begin to glow brightly as ice formed around them and crystallized slightly while a mass of energy was seen resonating between the palms of his hands. Jae leaped backwards from the teen and readied himself for a fight. Thinking to himself

"What the hell is with this kid... damn it! I really don't want to fight him... and what's with that Aura of his... is it a type of arte I've never seen one like that one before... if its ice though I should be able to melt it with fire... however I'll have to move quickly if I want to get off my attack successfully."

Lagunta looks over at Jae wondering what he planned to do next and then back at the young teen only to find him charging at them already. Quickly he rushed over attempting to intercept the attackers strike.

"I have to act fast hopefully my turtle armor will be able to absorb the blow... or should I deflect it... no time to think just got to hope that my tattoos won't break on me."

Jae not realizing that Lagunta was planning on intercepting the attack concentrates on himself and the teen coming at him. Pooling all of the flames he had summoned so far he caused them to rescind slightly as they moved directly into the path of the teen and then energy escaped from the azure flames smoke and culminated into a mass of heat creating a mirage like affect where the energy continued to pool. Rapidly the mass of aura got bigger and bigger, then finally after a few moments of intense waiting Jae managed to collect enough energy. The mass of heat seemed to blur everything looking into it and like a blurry mirror distorted everything on either side of it.

"Go forth and attack... deadly mirage!"

With that the mass of visual distortion flew at the child with frozen arms and as it did an unintended target stepped between it and the one it was intended for. Lagunta shouted as he quickly released his defense against both assailants

"Turtle shell deflection!"

Suddenly the dark space was ignited with a blast of pure light that was pure white and its radiance engulfed the entire room. In the middle of that mass of light Lagunta was surrounded by hexagonal prisms that resembled what one would see on the back of a tortoise. As the flash slowly faded into a constant white glow Jae shouted out Lagunta's name fearing his attack had struck and harmed him. The teen found his arm gripped tightly by Lagunta and upon looking up at Lagunta he felt a chill go down his spine because the young Thylos was glaring angrily at him with blades in his eyes. Then suddenly Lagunta began coughing uncontrollably and his grip weakened long enough for the teen to pull away. Blood droplets fell to the floor and Lagunta's side was badly singed by Jae's attack and his hand was covered in ice from the others blow.

"Lagunta... Lagunta... no... You bastard... get away from him aurghhhh!"

Jae shouted feverishly as anger and a torrent of rage came welling up from inside. The sight of his friend who had now collapsed onto the ground was more than he could bear. Jae charged at the Teen his eyes filled with hatred and his mind as well as his soul were in turmoil. Beginning to blame himself for the condition of his friend a stream of tears welled up and flowed from his right eye as he leaped strait at the boy with the intent to kill him. As he threw a strong left hook the teen swiftly dodged it and delivered his own striking blow. Jae dropped to the floor with a loud thud his ears ringing loudly and his vision was blurred by a mixture of tears and the shock to his system. As he looked over at his friend for what he thought was the last time he began to think to himself about the current situation.

"No... why is this happening... Lagunta... I'm... I'm so sorry, I didn't mean for things to go down like this... but this guy... he's just to tough for me to handle on my own... if I hadn't of wounded you back there this wouldn't be happening... Ja...ka..."

Jae's eyes close and he falls deep into unconsciousness for what seemed hours or even days as far as he is concerned.

Sometime later Jae opened his eyes to find himself being carried by someone. As he looked over Lagunta's face was staring back at him from the opposite shoulder, though his friend was still unconscious. The one carrying them was the teen from earlier and Jae found himself unable to move as his arms and legs were bound by something stronger than he was able to currently break. Before Jae could get his head cleared from the throbbing pain that still coursed through every part of his body the Teen threw him and Lagunta into a canoe along what must have been a riverbank. The Teen then loads a bit of hay and straw over the top of them partially covering Jae's face as he glares up at him unsure what's about to happen he struggles with the bonds even more fiercely than before and then shouts at the teen,

"Let us go we don't give a damn about your home... I swear to whoever controls this universe if I escape these bonds I'm going to clobber you and then... oh heavens no... you... you're a monster! No I won't let you do this to us."

The teen had lit a torch and began to shove the canoe into the shallow river currents. Jae's eyes were fixated on the torch, hoping that he could somehow deflect it before the Teen dropped it on top of the straw and the two of them were burned to a crisp. The teen chuckles as he says something that only one consumed by evil and hatred could possibly say and say with joy gushing forth from within himself.

"Now go to the hell that you and your friend created for yourselves and may you die slowly and as painfully as the great Areva devours your essence."

Jae looked at the boy with horror in his eyes as the words just uttered made him realize just how perilous a situation he was in.

"That boy... he... he worships Areva... but he's not Duggie... or even a relative species to them, so why... why is he worshiping the war god Areva known for his bloodthirstiness and love of sacrificing others... Jaka! This is bad... this is very very bad!"

Before Jae could think any further the teen had dropped the torch into the canoe, which had begun drifting downstream with the current. The straw began burning slowly at first due to where the torch had fallen. Slowly however the flames grew stronger as Jae struggled to undo his bindings. Jae wriggled for a bit before finally managing to set himself against the back of the canoe with his back up strait.

"I have no choice... I'll have to transform... I hate doing that though it always ruins my clothes and well these bindings are going to hurt really bad until I get fully transformed and they just snap from the immense change in size. Jakaaaa... well it can't be helped so here goes."

Jae closed his eyes for a few moments as he concentrated with a deep intensity that flowed throughout his body. Soon his whole body was aglow with an aura that seemed to well up from that intensity that he had welled up inside. As it became a part of the visible spectrum it exuded a blue hue similar to his foxfire. Slowly he began to resonate as he brought his emotions to a boil inside his head. All of the anger and pain he had felt up to this point he was turning into a trigger to jump start something primal that lay dormant within him. His features began to change slightly as this went on. His canines extended forth from his mouth forcing him to clench them reflexively and then gnash them together. This process sent jolts of pain throughout his body his features continuing to degrade to a more animalistic persona. His jaw extended and he began to hear the sound of bones cracking and rearranging within himself. His fingernails changed from their humanoid composition to feral claws. Blood and drool dribbled down his chin from the intensity of the transformation and he let out a scream due to the constraints that were worsening the already agonizing process. A tail sprouted from the base of his spine and tore through his pants with a loud tear. His ears slowly grew longer and fur formed around them as they repositioned themselves slightly higher upon his head. His feet grow larger stretching his shoes until finally they burst from the intense pressure inside of them. His body begins to grow a fine layer of fur as he comes to the final stages of his transformation. His face extends fully out into a semblance of humanoid and canine characteristics. He grows about three feet taller and the bonds snap with a few painful cracks heard from Jae's body. Jae clenches his hands against the boat from the intense pain still shooting through his form. This left claw marks as he slowly adjusted to the new shape and size of his body.

At last the ropes snapped and their binding power was rescinded to the floor of the boat as the tattered remains flew in every direction. Jae let out a primal cry to the heavens as the look in his eyes changed from those of an ambitious youth to a ravenous beast. He grabbed Lagunta out from under the burning straw and heaved him onto shore with a tremendous amount of strength behind his movements. Lagunta's unconscious body makes a thud as he hits the bank that would send shivers down anyone who heard it. The reason for this is the sound of breaking bones accompanied the thud and Jae began to lose himself. Jae utilizing the last of his will power directed his attention towards the one who had tried to kill both him and Lagunta. The ice wielder stood with a look of anticipation and a malevolent blood lust that was barely held in check. The Teen began laughing uncontrollably at the prospect of fighting Jae in this state.

"Well, well... it seems that I have the pleasure of fighting a Child of Kumiho in their war form... I didn't think my luck would be this much in my favor, but now I get to fight a child of Kumiho and then once I am victorious I will sacrifice your corpse to Areva... hahaha! This is the greatest day I have had in ages."

What was left of Jae's consciousness at this point dissipated into the feral creature that stood before the worshiper of Areva. This new form of Jae's unleashed a cry that was so fearsome that even the teen was put into a state of consternation. Unsure how to defend against Jae the teen unleashed a flurry of attacks upon the monster before him. He activated his powers through a loud shout while swiping both his arms in a flurry of rapid motions that began to glow a bright blue as his aura became visible.

"Ice Shard Shuriken!"

Upon shouting these words the teen sent dozens of ice shards that were in the shape of four pointed stars in Jae's direction. Jae unleashed another powerful roar as he prepared to defend himself. Without speaking a single word Jae took in a deep breath, focusing his entire aura into the back of his throat and like a creature of legend spewed fire in a wave like fashion from right to left. The deadly ice crystals and flames mixed together in a deadly torrent, but as the shards dissipated a fine mist that was cool to the touch began to flow across the riverbank. The Child of Kumiho and the Child of Areva glared at one another for what seemed days held in an instant. The intensity the two kept in their eyes was an equivalent bloodlust. One desiring the thrill of killing, the other overcame by bestial hunger and rage. There glares were not broken or lessoned in any way despite the mist clouding everything around them. Both watched each other and waited giving them time to bide hoping for their opponent to make the first and fatal move that would lead to the demise of one or the other. Jae suddenly decided it would be he who made the first move and started by changing his posture. He readied himself by getting into a stance that would give him the greatest chance of delivering a counterattack if the son of Areva decided to strike before his preparations were completed. Then Jae seemed to focus on gathering up his remaining strength and force it into his feet and lower legs. All the time this was going on Jae never removed his eyes from the youth across from him. The youth began to get impatient and said with a voice that was still hungering for blood,

"Well if you're not going to attack first then I guess I'll just have to have all of the fun and kill you! That's right Fox, I Wraith of the Dravyrn people will end the Foxari curse once and for all... but not because I hate you or your kind, instead it is because we stand before one another today as equals of the battlefield. I have lusted after this opportunity to fight among equals and it seems that Areva has smiled upon me this day and given me your soul to sacrifice in his honor... hahahaha...hahaha! Now die! Ice shard! Shuriken!"

Wraith slammed both his hands together and exerted himself tremendously. Sweat began to form upon his brow as he thought his way through the processes of his technique,

"Alright I've got to shoot my aura through the air fast enough to cause the temperature within my Auras field to drop low enough for my ice Shuriken's to do enough damage. Once that's done I'll focus on using my arms as a slingshot for those shards. But with this guy I'll have to go all out... and worst of all I'm going to have to swing with enough force to get past his overwhelming defenses. That transformation is supposed to be a last resort for his people, which means he was truly desperate when I tried to kill him in that canoe a few moments ago."

Wraith was about to follow through with his attack when a shrieking wind was herd coming from across the bank. Before Wraith could react a gleaming arrow struck through his left arm and buried itself inside his chest. The arrow struck with enough force that Wraiths left arm was thrust away from his right despite him clenching with all his might.

"Damn it! Where the hell did that come from... not left... or right either... wait the other side of the river... that's where that foxes friend was just... that bastard he took advantage of this guy transforming to strike me with all he had... and...and... it worked! Cough* my lung... he punctured my lung... gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!"

Wraith started to lose focus and his attack slowly dwindled. Blood trickled from both his arm and chest and worst of all he couldn't maneuver his arm anymore. This was due to the way the arrow lodged itself in his body.

Jae who was still in a manic state took another deep breath, then without hesitation expelled all of the energy he had stored up in his lungs at the now defenseless teen. Wraith unable to perform any attacks leaped into the air, but not before receiving intense burns across the left side of his body. Wraith expends the last of his energy to start breathing out a thick smoke screen similar to the fog created earlier. Jae still in a feral rage rushed after Wraith despite the fog disorienting his vision. The Child of Kumiho lunged in the direction he last smelled the teenager. With a mighty leap the mad fox pounced down upon what he perceived as the Dravyrns body and grappled him with claw and maw. Jae bit down as hard as he could before realizing that he had merely gripped what was nothing more than a corpse. The corpse was likely a previous victim of the Dravyrn; who seemed to be willing to do anything to protect these ruins from outsiders. With this occurrence Jae found his body completely drained and he fell into deep slumber. The Child of Kumiho fell backwards stained with blood from the bite he had just delivered. Lagunta who had freed himself earlier slowly and methodically made his way over to his friend. The broken ribs he had suffered from being thrown greatly reduced his mobility. After Lagunta finally arrived next to his friend he found himself forced to sit down. Partially this was due to the excruciating pain in his chest and the other was due to everything that had happened today. The Thylos reached into his pocket and grabbed a lighter and some smokes he had stored away. The Thylos beat the pack of cigarettes against his palm several times ensuring that the tobacco wasn't loose. Without hesitation Lagunta took one out of the carton and placed it to his lips. Lagunta flicked the lid off of the lighter before bringing it up to the cigarette that he had secured between his lips. Flick...flick...flick and then finally a dull flame began to take shape from the top of the lighter. The lighters flame slowly started to eat through the tip of Laguntas first smoke of the day and he took a few puffs to get a good burn going. Once the Thylos had it started he took a deep breath and then exhaled smoke bellowed from his nostrils and mouth. This created a very different fog than the one that had permeated the area previously. The Thylos wanting to break the silence looked over to his friend and said,

"Well...I hope you're happy... You barged right into the ruins...found some crazy lunatic and now look where we are at... Sigh* Oh well I guess it can't be helped now. Hopefully that mad man is out of the fight for a little while... hopefully long enough for us to either get out of here or recover enough to take him on again. Jae... sleep well... you've earned it, plus you saved my life back there...even though you did burn me at first...hahahaha... ha... Okay enough clowning around Lagunta you need to think... What are we going to do next...what's the most logical next move?"

Before Lagunta could think further, he found himself overcome with fatigue. The Thylos took a few more puffs from his cigarette and then threw it in the river. Then the Thylos took a deep breath cringing as he did due to the broken ribs, but then laid back and slept. The two companions wound up leaning against one another. Lagunta placed his head over Jae's chest and the two despite being bloodied, bruised and partially broken found some much needed rest.
