Advice From A Friend

~~~
"Okay, let me get this straight: You go to Mike's party, find out that you and Anthony love each other, and then you find him and Mike..." Tyan trailed off as Tom nodded solemnly. Tyan sat down next to the fox and put an arm on his shoulder. The otter thought for a moment before speaking.
"Let me ask you something Tom," the otter said as he lay down on the bed. "Do you still love Anthony? Even after what he did?" Tom felt the familiar pricks of pain inside his chest. He looked away from Tyan. Tom didn't want the otter to see his pained face.
"...yes. I still love him. I want him back so badly, but I'm afraid that he doesn't share the feeling anymore, or that he never even did."
"The worst thing you can do in this situation is speak for Anthony," responded the otter.
"I saw him with someone else. What other reason is there?!" yelled Tom, sniffling a little after.
"I don't know. Only Anthony can tell you." Tyan sat back up. He pulled the crying and trembling fox into a hug. "Listen: we know what kind of person Anthony is. He's shown that he cares deeply about you, even before you went out with him. I'm certain Anthony has a good reason for what he did."
"But-"
"Don't judge Anthony until he explains everything to you. Okay?" Tom looked up at the otter.
"I don't know if I could."
"Anthony is still your boyfriend. Try to understand him. Don't let your feelings get in the way and just listen to him."
"...okay." Tyan smiled and let go of Tom.
"Don't worry. I know you're unsure, but it takes a lot to change a person. Anthony is still the same knuckleheaded husky we've always known." Tom laughed at the joke.
"Thanks Tyan. But when should I go talk to him?" asked Tom. Tyan shrugged and stood up.
"I think Anthony might come to you first."
"That's likely. I'm really glad you took this well," Tom replied, smiling a little. He was feeling better, though still not close to well. Tyan moved away and blushed.
"Uh, Tom...there is a reason why I am taking this so well," murmured the otter.
"What's the reason?" asked the fox. Tyan blushed fiercely and looked down.
"I-I‘m...gay, too." Tom blushed too, although he could tell Tyan was much more nervous. He patted the otter's shoulder.
"That makes four of us. How long have you been..." Tyan looked at Tom and smiled, his face still beet red.
"...been gay?" finished Tyan. Tom nodded, still apprehensive about using the word. "This might surprise you, but I've been gay even before you met me. The reason I moved to Middleview was because I was dumb enough to tell one of my so-called friends I liked guys. He told everyone else, and I couldn't take the abuse at my old school. I told my parents about my sexuality, and we moved away two days later."
"So your parents know about you being gay. Didn't they get mad?" asked Tom.
"At first, they were a little disappointed. Then they talked to me about how much they loved and accepted me no matter what."
"I wish my parents were as accepting as yours. I think if I told them, they would freak out and probably send me to a special academy to ‘fix' me."
"Would they really?" Tyan asked, to which Tom hesitated.
"...the truth is, I don't know. My parents love me, I know that much. But I'm not sure how they would handle the ‘homosexual son' situation."
At that moment Tyan's mom shouted "Dinner's ready. Boys, get down here!" Tyan scratched his head.
"I guess that's it for now." Tom grinned as he walked behind the otter.
"It's fine. You helped enough."
They both walked to the kitchen, where the dinner plates were set around the table. Tyan's mom walked in with a large plate of steamed fish.
"Sit Anywhere. I hope you like seafood." She said to Tom. The fox sat down next to Tyan.
"Seafood is fine. I haven't had any in a while." Tyan's mom laughed.
"Well you're going to enjoy this mama's meal." She stated with confidence.
"No joke," added Tyan, "Mom's cooking is the best." Tom's mouth began to water as he stared at the food.
"I'm sure it'll be the best I've had." Tyan's father walked in and sat down. He smiled at Tom.
"Good to have you for dinner," was all he said.
They began to eat once Tyan's mom was persuaded into a chair. They ate calmly and talked about their day. Tom couldn't help but envy Tyan; He had parents who accepted him, and no cheating boyfriend. The discussion soon led to the afternoon's events, to which Tyan's mom suddenly slapped her forehead.
"Oh! I forgot to tell you," she spoke to Tom, "Anthony called (Tom nearly chocked on a chunk of fish) and he wanted to know if you were here. I told him you were, and he told me he was coming to pick you up."
Tom was clearly having trouble swallowing, so Tyan answered for him.
"Yeah, duh! I forgot to tell you that!" Tyan's dad raised an eyebrow, but said nothing. "Anthony was coming to pick him up, so you don't have to worry about how he'll get home." Tyan's mom smiled.
"Well, isn't that nice of him!" Tom recovered from the initial surprise and he kicked Tyan under the table.
"Why did you tell her that?!" yelled Tom once both furs were back in Tyan's room.
"What else was I supposed to say? That was the only thing I could think of," defended Tyan.
"You could have told her I would call him back!" Tyan blushed and looked away.
"It's a little too late for that," he retorted. Tom sighed and flung himself onto Tyan's bed, where he screamed into the pillows. Tyan watched the fox and shook his head.
"Screaming into my pillows won't help you at all." Tom looked up only to glare at the otter. "Besides, I think it's a good thing that he's coming so soon."
"How is that a good thing? I'm not ready to...talk to him." Tom whimpered and buried his head into the pillows once more. Tom felt a warm paw on his back.
"Tom...you're a great guy, a great friend. If you were single, I would seriously go after you." Tom looked up in surprise.
"Why didn't you, before?" asked the fox. Tyan walked towards the window and peered outside.
"To be honest, I always had this nagging feeling that there was someone out there who needed you more than I did." Tom gave him a skeptical look.
"In your honest opinion, who do you think it is?" Both furs looked at the door as light but clear tap echoed twice.
"I think you know the answer to that question."
