Duality

What must we endure, to be 'us'?

"I don't know. I don't know."

There is a divide, between who you are, and your ideal self: the you inside the shell.

Look in the mirror, but you won't see me.

"I know, I know! There is little I can do but endure."

Look at me, inside your head. This is who 'you' are.

There is a divide, and it's not certain if your body was meant to cross it.

I look so fat today.

"This is not what we are."

You determine to fight it: predestination, age, sex, the will of God. But you end up fighting yourself.

I want them dead, for trying to prevent us both being one.

"People can't do that in this life. We'll be imprisoned."

Even more deeply so than already, perhaps... but their jokes are making us less real...

"Making us both into objects."

I want...

"I want..."

Their voices dead.

"Just so. We won't kill them, though."

It's imperative, we mustn't.

"But we still hate them for their blind opinions."

We hate that it hurts our chances to be together.

You and I.

You, the face.

"And you, the soul."

The rules are complicated lies.

It seems that your soul belongs to a creator.

"It seems that your appearance must be dictated by etiquette and style."

Look at us now, we are ungainly, overweight, crooked and bent, fat, and marked in ungainly places.

"We are not molding our shape to you successfully."

I want to be seen by all, for my naked splendor.

"The world finds that indecent, so we must adopt you subtly. Our body is limited, while you are not."

I don't like compromising.

"Sadly, nature forces our hand."

I want to kill nature. I want to rearrange its organs, and resuscitate it into something wondrous.

Yeah, we're a mess.

Think of it this way--if you pass on, and leave your shell and still exist, is there any need for this divide--

"Think of it this way. You only need a face to wear on top of your soul."

If you could exist--

"If you could exist without that divide,"

You would only just, as they suggest--'be yourself'.

But instead, you are two beings, at war.

A raw intense, beautiful inside

"A cautious, eroding outside; a bastion like a lighthouse, that learns to direct, and to let that raw beauty out."

Ultimately, do you entertain this game?

"Or like us,"

Or like us, do you long for the termination of this game?

What is the 'real' you, even?
