#38 of Lagomorphs

Rabs, Sheps and Jeff try to settle down for the night.

I found it really hard to tie the events into a continuous description, so I finally gave up. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. ;3

Chapter 35 -- Camp, Interrupted __________________________________

Afterward, all Jeff could remember were brief flashes of the events of that night.

Jeff remembered...

Scout introducing the other Sheps: two were his cousins, brothers from the same litter. They looked so much alike Jeff knew he was going to have trouble telling them apart. The mostly white youngster was Scout's nephew. Scout hugged him with affection despite his congenital defect: like the Rabs, his coloration made it impossible for him to hide in the darkness.

To his grief, Jeff could not remember their names.

Jeff remembered...

Brushing Sky, getting the dried mud out of his fur, the dirt off his paws; Sky purring in satisfaction as the Rab relaxed near the fire.

Jeff had not remembered to pack a brush. Sky had.

Jeff remembered...

Offering to brush Scout but being refused. He'd hoped to be able to talk to the Shep privately, to try to persuade the dog to let them go on, to find out if he could influence him as he could Rabs. That hadn't happened.

Jeff remembered...

Diver importuning him for a suck of his thumb. The Rab was having a hard time getting to sleep, despite the grooming by his brother and now Swimmer's quiet snoring next to him. Even though he hadn't gotten much rest during the day, Diver was much too agitated to doze off on his own. Rabs normally were up at night, doing Rabbish things, and sleep was the last thing on his mind.

Jeff couldn't remember how long he'd let the Rab suckle. It had seemed forever with the Sheps staring at them.

Jeff remembered...

Scout assigning guard watches to the Sheps: his nephew to take the first watch, the brothers to guard the middle of the night, while he'd take the dawn watch. He distinctly remembered the Shep reminding the others to keep the fire burning brightly.

Jeff remembered...

Cuddling next to Sky, facing the bright yellow and red flames with the Rab behind him. He remembered the Rab's arm around him, gently tugging his shirt out of his pants. He couldn't forget Sky's warm hand caressing his stomach under the shirt while the Rab licked the back of his neck.

He couldn't remember falling asleep.

Jeff remembered...

Being awakened in the middle of the night by quiet, rhythmic squeaks, seeing one of the Shep brothers holding Diver close, thrusting. The dog had mounted the Rab from the front and was fucking him lovingly, licking his face occasionally. Firelight glinted off their gleaming bodies, and a brush lay nearby, containing tufts of both Rab and Shep fur. He remembered seeing the ecstasy on Diver's face as the Shep's final thrusts sank his knot deeply into the Rab, tying them together.

He couldn't stay awake long enough to see them separate.

Jeff remembered...

Being abruptly wakened by Scout's yells, shouts telling them to run, Run! He remembered huge, dark hooves scattering the dying embers of the fire, a fire no longer blazing brightly.

Jeff remembered...

Grabbing his backpack and running, stumbling with the Rabs down a dark path, lit only by starlight, with no hint of dawn in the sky. Running in terror as they heard yells fade behind them, fade too quickly for the distance, fade as the shouters stopped protesting, fade as the Demon Saw them.

Jeff remembered...

Collapsing into the entrance of a cave, hiding there with the Rabs, praying not to have been followed, not to have been noticed.

Jeff remembered...

Cowering in the entrance to the Lower Darkness.
