Here is chapter 8. Just when things start to look up, they'll come crashing down once more.

Chapter 8: The Lighter Side

Humphrey laid alone in the den, bored out of his mind, as without Kate, and without the company of any individual, he found that his current situation was rather drab after a while.

In his time alone, he had tossed, turned, paced, drawn pictures in the dirt, and worried, but mostly, aside from being bored to tears, he was worried. He was not usually one to succumb to paranoia, but he had been left alone, possibly without somebody to protect him. He knew that he had likely made a lot of enemies with his recent episode, and if something were to happen, he knew that one of two things would happen: He would die or his aggressor would die, which would only make his situation worse. He just hoped that Winston or Kate would get back soon before anything bad happened.

Lilly was nervous as she waited for Garth to return from his bath, as she knew that this was long overdue; but she had never done anything like it before. While he was gone, she had sneaked away as well, with haste so as to make sure that what she had to do was done before his return. She walked briskly to a separate lake and quickly washed her fur, then she moved out to the plain near her home where the wild flowers grew plentiful and beautiful. Taking care not to dirty herself again after her bath, she lied in a patch of them so as to soak their scent into her fur, then rose, shook herself of the few leaves and pedals which clung to her fur, then selected the prettiest pink flower she could find.

She brushed her fur aside so that it revealed both of her eyes, then held it in place by sliding the flower behind her ear.

Now ready, amazingly in only a matter of five minutes, she moved hastily back to the den.

Thankfully she found that Garth had yet to return, but was quite surprised to find different company waiting for her.

"Kate?" she asked.

"Well look at you getting all dolled up," Kate mused as she rose to greet her sister.

Lilly blushed madly and lowered her eyes.

"What brings you here?" she asked shyly as her eyes met Kate's once more.

"I made you a promise and now I'm here," Kate replied apologetically, "I'm just sorry it took so long."

Lilly nodded.

"I appreciate that," she said gratefully, "but umm..."

She lowered her eyes.

"Is everything okay?" Kate asked, "and where is Garth?"

"Everything's fine," she replied quickly, "I sent him to take a bath."

"Just like that?" Kate asked.

"Well he took a little talking to, but yeah."

Kate nodded.

"So what is the occasion?" she asked.

"What do you mean?" Lilly replied.

"You're all prettied up," she said, "what's the occasion?"

"Oh," Lilly began, then lowered her eyes, "well... you see..."

Kate caught on immediately.

"Oh, I gotcha," she said with a nod, "should I leave?"

Lilly didn't like having to send her sister packing like that, but she did have to go, so she nodded.

"Yeah, sorry," Lilly replied skittishly, lowering her eyes.

Kate nodded as well and stepped forward.

"Don't be sorry, just have fun," she stated and hugged her then pulled away.

"Wait," Lilly called to her, causing her to arrest her motion, "I'm... a little scared; how is it?"

"Incredible," Kate assured with a smile, "Humphrey was very gentle with me our first time. If Garth loves you, he will be too."

"Does... does it hurt?" Lilly asked apprehensively.

"Only at first," her sister replied, "but it will only last a minute or two, then it will be the best experience of your life. Trust me."

Lilly nodded, now assured, then stepped forward and hugged her sister.

"Thank you, sis, I love you."

"I love you too," Kate said and pulled away, "I'm gonna go ahead and get out of your way."

Lilly nodded and released her then stepped back.

Kate turned, bid her farewell, then was gone, leaving Lilly all alone.

Lilly, once her sister was gone, picked herself up and moved toward the back of the den where hopefully the shadows would hide her so that when Garth did finally return, she could surprise him. She did not know much about being sexy, but she would definitely give it her best shot.

Garth then arrived a few moments later, clean, and with a seemingly new sense of life in his stature the likes of which had been absent from his body for quite some time now, but when he entered, he paused and allowed his eyes to flash quickly about the den.

"Uh... hello?" he called, "Lilly?"

"I'm over here, Garth," she replied sensually, causing Garth to turn to her.

She emerged from the shadows with an aura of beauty the likes of which Garth had never seen, surpassing even the day of their wedding. She was stunning. Her, fur clean and glossy, gleamed in the fading light of the evening and the flower tucked behind her ear, vibrant pink with perfect petals which faded until they became a subtle hue of lavender, complimented her eyes marvelously. She moved gracefully across the floor, almost as Garth would imagine watching an angel dance across the surface of the lake. A smile of pure admiration slowly blended to life upon his face as he stared and he found himself wondering how it was that he had ever been so lucky as to find a mate as beautiful as she was. He knew he did not deserve her.

Finally Lilly stopped before him and lowered her eyes slightly, melting under his stare. Her cheeks became a rosy shade of pink beneath her fur and she giggled softly, breaking and then mending eye contact intermittently, for compliments of any kind, both verbal and non, flattered her deeply as she was the type who felt as though she was nothing special.

"Wow," Garth whispered, lost in the deepest throws of shock, for he knew that the Aurora Borealis which danced in the black skies of the night would weep with envy at the sheer beauty of Lilly.

Lilly once again mended eye contact, though abashedly and smiled.

"Wow what?" she asked him sheepishly.

"I've never seen anything more beautiful in my whole life," Garth replied, running his eyes over her entire body, "you're absolutely breathtaking."

Lilly's blush deepened and she once again lowered her eyes.

"Thank you," she thanked meekly.

Garth smiled warmly and stepped forward, wrapping her into a warm embrace, which she returned with a smile of her own.

Like this the two remained for the better part of a minute before Lilly finally spoke.

"Hey... um Garth?" she asked nervously, pulling away slightly so that she could see his face, but still remain in his arms.

"Yes Lilly?" he asked, smiling broadly.

"I- I've been thinking," she began slowly, but trailed off.

"Oh?" Garth asked with a curious cock of his head, "what about?"

Lilly lowered her eyes.

"Well... I was just wondering if... um..."

"Wondering what?" Garth asked her.

"Well... I was just wondering... how you would feel about maybe trying to have a family," she replied, lifting her eyes to meet his.

At first Garth was shocked by such a question, for he knew that the day would eventually come when they would have pups of their own, but he was not counting on that day to be today. Also, like most new fathers, he was scared, as he knew that having pups was a huge responsibility, and he feared that he wasn't ready to handle being the personal caretaker of another individual's life, but on the other side of this, he had always wanted a family of his own, so his shock quickly melted into a smile.

"I would love to," he answered, "but only when you are ready."

Lilly looked away with a smile.

"I... I think I'm ready now," she replied shyly, lifting her eyes to him.

Garth smiled softly.

"Then so am I," he said and pulled her into a kiss.

Lilly returned his kiss passionately, closing her eyes, and as it became more and more intimate, they began to lean toward the ground. Finally their pivotal point of equilibrium was broken and they fell to the floor of the den. Garth now laid over Lilly, who rested upon her back, but the fall did not break their kiss nor did it discourage them from what they were doing.

Then finally, after another minute locked in passionate kissing, they separated. Both of them stared deeply into each other's eyes with so much love and so much desire that all previous doubts had been washed away completely, forgotten, and they knew from the very depths of their souls as their lips locked again that this was what they truly wanted.

Humphrey was beginning to grow restless, for his energies were boundless, and if he could not burn off this energy, it festered inside of him like a sore. So long ha he been cooped up that he felt as though his body would explode. He was so antsy, in fact, that his skin was tender to the touch, making it so that he could not remain in one position any longer than thirty seconds. This in turn caused him to toss and turn tumultuously on his sides, then would eventually encourage him to his paws where he would pace the den a number of times before sitting down once again, only to inevitably have the entire process repeated.

And it was not like he could just go outside.

He was given explicit instructions to remain inside of the den, but he could not remain cooped up like this.

Something needed to happen before he lost his mind.

He sighed, now lying on his back, and stared up at the ceiling, trying to pick its features out of the darkness that had fallen around him.

He knew that he should probably get some rest, but so much and so little had happened today that he knew sleep would be next to impossible.

He turned over onto his side so that his back was turned to the mouth of the den and groaned.

How long could that meeting possibly take, and where was Kate? Surely Garth and Lilly didn't need her there for that long, so what was taking her so long?

He groaned again, pressing a sigh out of his nose and began to toy with the dirt beneath his paws.

Then finally he heard the scrape of paws drawing near.

His spirits were brightened immediately and he lifted his head quickly from off of the ground, but when he turned himself over so that he could greet whomever it was that approached, his elation quickly vanished and was replaced by a deep scowl.

"You," he seethed.
