#2 of Birth by Sleep

Yunalesca took a long, drawn out drag from her cigarette and blew out twin trails of smoke from her nose, the grey, silver mist wrapping slightly around her head to give her a vaguely demonic look.

All the more to suit my lifestyle, huh? She thought wryly before eyeing the nightclub she was in. The music was loud, the lights erratic and pulsing maddeningly to its impossible beat, and the dancers moving to the beats of the techno slaughter as if they were having seizers while in the throws of passion.

She currently was standing on the fringe of the crowd, not wanting to go home smelling of mortal corruption and lust as well as smoke. She wore a severely torn pair of jeans and a black top that matched perfectly with her caramel fur while showing off her black stomach fur sensually, the strange silver symbols along the sleeves adding to the image of a raver who enjoyed a good dose of Goth.

She took another drag from the nearly spent cigarette and blew a fine mist of grey smoke from between her lips before dropping it to the ground and stomping it underfoot. She brushed a lock of hair out of her face and leaned against the wall innocently, making sure that she looked the picture of teen innocence and the object of lust for any boy or curious girl who happened to glance for more than a few seconds in her direction.

The music bounced and rolled over her, as if waves from the ocean, battering down on her shoulders with the weight of their terrible sounds. She forced herself to block out the noise and focused solely on the many juicy pulses beating around her, the blood in their veins calling out to her with a chorus almost as beautiful as an angel's.

Before she could pursue the thoughts of that particular subject, a flicker of movement caught her the corner of her eye. She smirked and quickly hid it behind a hand, so as to make it seem she was laughing at an unspoken joke. The person she had seen walked over to her and leaned against the wall with her, a cup of vodka cocktail in his hand. She looked at him from the corner of his eye and couldn't help but smile hungrily.

He was a young, athletic looking teenager with olive toned skin and a mop of disheveled hair that looked as if he had just gotten out of bed. He was wearing a muscle shirt that hugged tightly to his chest and arms to show off his subtly muscled arms while a necklace of dog tags and two crosses was draped down to his belly button. He wore a pair of tight jeans and a pair of black Converse sneakers with bright green shoelaces.

"You come here often?" He asked. His voice was tinged with a slight monotone on an otherwise average range of octaves. She looked up at him and, with a truly vampiric smile that held all the innocence and beauty in the world, stared into his eyes. They were a strange hue of blue.

"No... this is my first time in the Blue Diamond." She replied, her eyes flashing slightly crimson, as she smelled his blood in his neck, bringing up the bloodlust she had been holding in check for the past few days. He immediately got lost in her eyes and in that moment, she knew she had him in her power.

"Your eyes... they're beautiful..." He whispered. She bit her lip in mock nervousness and blushed softly on cue.

"You think so?" She whispered, her tail swishing slightly behind her with an air of embarrassment that would've fooled anyone. He nodded dreamily and she blushed a little darker. "Do... do you mind if we go somewhere... a little more private?" She whispered, toying with a bit of her hair and turning it into a curl around her finger.

He nodded again and started off towards the exit when she shook her head and grasped his hand in hers. "I... was thinking of something along the lines of immediate privacy."

"Oh. In that case, I know the perfect place." He said with a smirk before skirting the crowd to a door marked with a glow in the dark broken heart with white splotches all over the door.

Subtle, isn't it? She thought with a roll of her eyes. He opened the door quickly and they slipped into it unnoticed by anyone. She locked the door behind them and turned around to find that his lips were on hers in an instant, the taste of alcohol and drugs rushing into her mouth alongside his tongue. She felt his hands roaming over her body and withheld a snarl at this indignity, but she heard the blood rushing through his veins and deemed it acceptable for a quick drink of a rare kind.

He pulled back when he couldn't breathe anymore and gasped deeply for a few moments before she pushed him back against the wall and quickly dragged his shirt over his head and threw it over her shoulder. She dipped her head down to his neck and licked it gently, making him laugh as she tickled him softly. He let his hands slide down the curve of her thigh and was about to go to her belt loops when he felt her bite into his neck gently.

"So you're into biting, hmm?" He asked quietly, his eyes dulled with pleasure. Yunalesca was too busy lapping at his blood to answer and, before she could rein in her vampiric side, she bit down nearly twice as hard and wrapped her arms tightly around his, pinning them to his sides as she started drinking greedily. He stiffened up heavily and fought against her grip as he felt his warm blood trickling down his neck and continuing down his chest.

When she'd had her fill, she pulled away and licked her lips before pulling out another cigarette from her pocket, clicking her claws together to form a small flame on her index claw before lighting it and taking a long puff from it. He staggered back until he was at the far end of the oversized closet and slid down to the ground, falling to his side as the loss of blood caught up to him.

She watched the light in his eyes fade and heaved a small sigh as knelt next to him, cupping her hand on his cheek gently. His lips trembled with the effort of his next words.

"S-she was right..." He whispered, the effort making his back arch and his heart give out. He slumped to the ground without a sound.

Yunalesca closed his eyes and stood up with another drag of cigarette before she walked out of the room and closed the door behind her, cleaning the blood from the corners from her lips. She walked over to the exit and gave the nightclub one last look before walking out into the cool night air, a trail of smoke following her as she left.

She stopped outside the door and left out a blood red mist from her lips as the smoke picked up on the neon lights from the sign behind her. She looked up at the sky and for once she wished she could see the stars in New York. Just once. She sighed and started off down the sidewalk, the sound of the ever-present traffic loud in her ears as she made her way home. If anyone looked at her, they would've seen a slightly angered look on her face.

It wasn't so much the lights and the loud noises that bothered her, but the sheer amount of people in the city itself. You could never find a moment to be by yourself, let alone any peace and quiet. For a vampire like her, it could get kind of tiresome. But, there were benefits to living in such a large city such as New York.

One of which was the sheer amount of people. One or two going missing every few months goes unnoticed for quite a while.

Yunalesca walked past an alley and stopped when she registered muffled screams of agony from farther down it. She took a deep breath from her nose and the sharp stench of gunpowder and lust stung her nostrils, making her eyes grow dark with anger. She took a drag from the cigarette and flicked into a trashcan before walking off into the slightly inky darkness of the alley, idly wondering why none of the lights were on.

She quickly found what she was looking for and was wholly surprised at what she was looking at.

There were five shadows in the connecting alley; two on the ground and the other three near the wall. The two on the ground were long dead, but the three were quite alive, the one in the middle mortal from the red blood racing through her body and the erratic pulse that screamed at her to drink it, but the other two, those were a quandary to her. They had a pulse that was easily picked up by her senses, but she couldn't place its irregular beat or the reason for the absence of the distinct aroma live blood had.

But they were raping someone and that was something she wouldn't stand idly by and let happen.

She whistled shrilly.

One of the shadows looked up and barked out a responding challenge and the sound hurt her ears, but she ignored it and cracked her knuckles loudly, glaring death towards them.

Before she could take a step forward, however, a loud howl split the air and the two shadows looked up to the sky in acknowledgement of the howl before adding their own howls to it, the sound close to shattering her eardrums. They dropped the unfortunate mortal to the ground, where she sobbed quietly and curled into a ball, and quickly bounded up the wall closest to them before disappearing over the lip of the building.

"Oh no you don't!" She growled before crouching slightly and jumping to the roof of the building to find that the two shadows were waiting for her. And now that she could see them in the glow of the building adjacent theirs, she realized why she couldn't have picked up their blood's scent.

They both stood at around seven feet tall on all four and their eyes were the color of burning coals, their teeth bared in snarls of protest as well as anger. Their fur was a multitude of silvers and subtle blacks that made it look as if they were wearing full-length suits of shimmering metal plates. On each of their paws were silver claws that looked to have serrated edges on their undersides, good for rending and gripping.

"What business do you two have with mortals?" She snarled, her true vampiric nature coming through as her own claws burned slightly with a light colored flame that licked at her fingers greedily. One of the massive dogs growled darkly at her and lowered into an attack like stance, drool slightly coming from between its barred teeth.

"That is quite enough, my pets. Come here now, Mommy has need of your services." A sweet, motherly voice cooed from somewhere nearby. Yunalesca looked around for the source of the voice and found it in the form of a middle-aged woman in a flowing robe with a pair of collars in her hands. The massive dogs quickly scrambled over the two rooftops towards her and stopped at her sides, tails wagging and lips forming what could only be described as a smile in the loosest sense of the word. She scratched them behind the ears gently and cooed softly to them, completely ignoring her.

"Hey! You can't just let your dogs off their leashes like that! Especially demon dogs like those Fenrirs." She scowled from her rooftop. The woman looked up and noticed her for the first time and gave her an irritated smirk.

"Well now, if having my dogs running around for a little exercise is bad for them, then I must not be doing my job as a caretaker right, now am I?" She called back. Yunalesca felt her eye twitch and sighed darkly before launching herself over to the rooftop she was on, taking great care to stay at least a few feet away from the dogs.

"Uh huh, especially if that exercise includes the killing of a few mortals and the raping of a few more. Yeah, I could definitely see you winning Caretaker of the Year." She muttered with a cross of her arms. The woman cackled and snapped the collars on her dogs before taking their leads in her hands.

"You see, that is the kind of attitude that gets my heart going. But you are just a cheeky little vampire barely worth my time." She said turning her back on her. "A word of advice: Don't concern yourself with the lives of mortals just because you are a vampire and find sustenance from them. They aren't worth your time."

With that said, she took a step forward and a door opened in space ahead of her, admitting her and her dogs into it before it closed with a loud bang, causing the rooftop to shudder slightly beneath her feet.

Yunalesca watched her go with slight distaste and growled to herself before heading off across the rooftops over to where the woman had been. True to form, she was still lying on the ground in the fetal position, her clothes ripped and bloodied in places, the stench of sex clinging to her like a second skin. She dropped down to the ground next to her and quietly picked her up before taking off towards the nearest hospital, going as fast as comfort would allow. She admitted her to the hospital's psyche ward as well as paid for any expenses she might need before heading off back home, her mind swirling with emotions at the moment.

She stopped outside the hospital's doors and couldn't help but look up at the starless sky again, wishing she could see them as she once had with Lamount. She closed her eyes and began to let her past memories entangle her, to draw her back to a beautiful British hillside with a quaint cottage and a wonderful view of the countryside.

She opened her eyes with a sigh and shook her head, getting rid of the memories there and replacing them with the present.

He's gone from your life now, Yuna. He won't be coming back anytime soon. She thought resolutely. She glowered at the ground and lit another cigarette before starting the long trip home, feeling strangely hollow and saddened by the thoughts of Lamount in her head.

It was to be a long night for her.
