#3 of A romance in the countryside

Warning, this has homosexual stuff in it. You don't like it, gtfo. if not, keep on reading...

I loved him...

That was the only thought running through my mind as Alex came back to our table. Grandad patted him on the back as he sat down.

"Now where did you learn to croon like that?"

He asked. Alex just smiled timidly and blushed, His golden fur turning a light shade of pink.

"Oh, just a few singing lessons at my old school."

Alex smiled again, but then he looked at me funny. I realized I was staring and quickly averted my gaze.

"What's wrong Vinnie?"

Grandad chuckled.

"I think you've left him a bit stunned mate. That was his favorite song you were singing up there."

"Really? Mine too."

[Yet another thing we have in common.]

"You know Vince has got a bit of a voice too."

"Grandad!"

"though the only audience he's had is the bathroom mirror."

"GRANDAD!"

Both he and Alex cracked up laughing. I sulked for a minute, then I just joined in. I knew he was only teasing. But Grandad was right. He did leave me stunned.

"You were amazing Alex. I've never heard anyone sing that good."

"I wasn't that good Vinnie..."

"Yes you were! If you went on Australian idol, you'd be named winner at the audition!"

He looked touched when I said that.

"Wow. I, er... thanks Vinnie. That means a lot."

He smiled that dazzling smile at me and I went weak at the knees.

"You know Vinnie, I'm glad you're the first friend I made here."

I just grinned like an idiot and stared into his turquoise gemstone eyes. Of course Grandad had to ruin the moment by clearing his throat.

"So Alex, would you like to stay the night with us?"

[Grandad!? What the f'ing hell is he doing?!]

"Sure, that'd be fun."

"I'll get the mattress out from under Vince's bed for you. Will it be ok with your parents?"

"Oh they won't mind."

Alex said that with a grin but a second later, I heard him mutter something under his breath.

"They wouldn't care where I went..."

[What did he mean by that?]

But Alex just went back to his normal cheery self.

"Well, I gotta use the bathroom."

The Cheetah said, excusing himself. Once he was out of sight, I turned to scowl at a certain aged German Sheperd.

"Grandad..."

"Look Vince, I can tell this guy is a really good friend to you. I can also tell that you're not going to do anything on you're own so I'm just giving you a little push."

I sighed. I knew he was right. I wouldn't do anything on own, especially now that I knew that I loved him. Speaking of which, the Cheetah of my affections took his seat back at the table.

"Well, I don't know about you guys but I'm starving!"

"You just read my mind mate!"

I just nodded with a smile.

For a while after that, I was in a daze. I couldn't even remember what I had ordered. What I do remember is sneaking glances at Alex while I ate. My God, everything about him was so... perfect. Even the way he batted his eyelids seemed beautiful to me. After a while, we were all finished and way too full to order dessert. Alex patted his belly, thoroughly satisfied.

"Now that was good. Thanks for that mister er... Vinnie's Grandad."

"The name's Gerald, and you're welcome."

"Burrrp!"

That was me. I blushed so hard it could be seen through my red fur. Alex laughed. Grandad just shook his head and chuckled.

"Well we should probably be going."

He said. Alex and I nodded. We went back outside to the car. By this time, the stars were out and the moon was up high. The stars sparkled above like diamonds scattered across a shroud of black velvet. It was rather romantic. I looked at Alex. He was staring at the sky too, smiling.

"What, are you two gonna walk?"

Grandad was already in the car, waiting for us. Blushing we jogged over and got in. Alex asked if we could stop by his place so that he could grab some clothes for tomorrow. He gave Grandad directions that were a fair way out of town, close towards our neighbor Bailingup.

"How did you get to town?"

I asked him.

"I walked."

"You what?!"

"It's good exercise."

I gave him my best shocked expression. He just laughed that high pitched laugh again. Finally we came to his house. House, yeah right; the place was a bloody great big mansion! At least three storeys high, painted cream, lined with roses, the place was lavish! I didn't know much about Alex' parents but I now knew that they must have been loaded. Alex went inside and came out with a bundle of clothes in his arms. He stepped into the door of the car and we drove back off.

When we finally got back to our place, I was dead tired. The night was later than we thought. Alex must have been tired as well because he yawned loudly. I had to smile. That yawn sounded so cute, like he was meowing. Yet another thing that I loved about him. We pulled up the driveway and walked into the house. It was just as cold in here as it was outside. I shivered.

"Brrr, someone turn up the heat!"

Grandad remarked as he went upstairs, leaving me and Alex alone. On purpose? I looked at Alex to see him staring at me.

"What?"

He pointed at my chest.

"That's a pretty thing. Where'd you get it?"

He was talking about my necklace. Instantly I felt the corners of my eyes grow hot. Alex noticed as well.

"Oh...I-I'm sorry man. I didn't mean to-"

"It's ok. *sniff* I'll... I'll tell you tomorrow."

I composed myself as Grandad came back down the stairs.

"Everything's ready for ya Alex."

"Thanks."

Alex started up the stairs, me following behind. I realized I was staring at his cute butt as we trudged up the stairs. It took all of my willpower to control my stirring Foxhood and it took even more to not reach out, spin the Cheetah around and place my lips on his. Grandad had set up the mattress in the middle of my room. (coincidence?) Alex literally fell onto it.

"I don't know why but I'm really tired."

I yawned.

"Yeah, me too."

I stepped over to my bed and began stripping down to my boxers. Once I had, I turned to go to the bathroom. But to my embarrassment, I saw Alex in his boxers as well. He was facing away from me, folding up his clothes neatly. I had to stare at his slender figure. Everything seemed to slow down. My eyes went everywhere all over his gorgeous body from the cute round ears on his head to the end of his ringed tail. My God, he was beautiful!

[What are you doing you idiot?!]

I shook my head and stepped out to the bathroom.

I came back a few minutes later to find that Alex under the covers, fast asleep.

[Wow. He must have been tired,]

I gazed at him longingly. At how his chest slowly rose and fell. I would listen to the soft sounds he made while breathing, it was like music to my ears. It was at this point that I had to do something or else I'd go insane. Trembling, I knelt over him, edged closer and closer until my muzzle connected with his cheek.

And I kissed him.

What was I thinking? I don't know. Alex smiled in his sleep and started purring. I leaned back up and whispered in his ear the one thing I wanted to say to him since we left the restaurant.

"I love you..."

I started lovingly caressing his cheek where I had kissed him. His smile broke out wider, his purring became louder and he leaned into my ministrations, muttering something incoherent. This was an EXTREMELY risky thing to do. Despite that, I smiled. This was just one of the things I wanted dearly to do with Alex. Reluctantly, I stood back up and quietly crept over to my bed. I placed my glasses on the table and slipped under the covers. I slowly fell asleep, dreaming of Alex...

My eyelids pried themselves open to a cream ceiling. Outside the window, it was cloudy but not raining. Remembering something, I looked over to my right. Standing there was Alex in the shorts and red tank top he had brought with him. He was smiling at me.

"What?"

"You look cute when you're sleeping."

"Ok, that just sounded weird"He laughed.

"Oh yeah your Grandad said he was called into work early this morning so we have the place to ourselves."

"Cool."I slipped out of bed to find some good clothes.

"So what do you wanna do?"

I thought for a moment as I rummaged through my drawers, then clicked my fingers with an idea.

"I know. We could go for a swim. There's a lake not too far from here, the water always perfect and only I know it exists!"

"Sweet!"

With our day sorted, I dressed myself in some cream colored board shorts and a dark blue tank top. We grabbed some towels and a snack for later and we were off. I had found the lake because of some rather sad circumstances. I was running from Justin after a particularly traumatising bullying session. I was crying so much I couldn't see! Then from out of nowhere I fell into a deep pool of water. Thankfully I took to water like a fish so I didn't drown. When I got back out, I found myself on the top of small cliff overlooking a gigantic lake that stretched as far as the eye could see. And beyond that was a rolling mountain covered in forest, completely untouched by furkind. Sometimes I would go the lake and watch the sun set over the mountain and cast a rainbow of pink and yellow across the grey clouds. It was just such a beautiful site. Though not as beautiful as a certain cheetah...

I led him around the back of the house and down a hidden dirt path. The forest grew thicker and thicker until it parted like the red sea to reveal the lake. It was around lunchtime when we arrived so the sun was up high, shining down on our little swimming hole. I was looking up at the clear blue sky when a yellow blur raced past me, leaped off the cliff edge and into the pristine water below. I then realized the water was not that deep...

Panicking lightly, I rushed down the slope next to the cliff, to the lake shore.

"Alex?!"

It was a bit silly, seeing as he was underwater. A second later I got the fright of my life as the cheetah rose up in front of me. The water was up to his waistline. He was using both his paws to brush his blonde head fur out of his eyes. God he looked sooo hot when his fur was wet. He was like Venus rising from waves. He glanced at me, then put on a startled face and pointed at something behind me.

"Oh my god, what's that?!"

I bought it, hook line and sinker.

I whipped around to look and felt a cold rush on my back. Alex had splashed me, completely soaking my shirt. He was bending over in laughter which I joined in as well.

"You are so dead!"

I called to him as I tore off my shirt and dove in after him. A splash fight occurred between us with comments like "gotcha!" and "Ha ha! Victory is mine!" This lasted for about an hour until I called a truce. We then went for a walk along the lake shore to see actually how far it went. It was actually pretty small, the mountain just made it seem big. By the time we got back to the cliff, it was almost dusk. Finally, we had one last splash fight and then kicked back on our towels talking about all sorts of stuff. A small silence had fallen after a heated discussion about how much we hated racists when...

"So are you gonna tell me about it?"

He asked.

"About what?"

Alex gestured to my necklace.

"Oh..."

"I don't mean to pry or anything-"

"No, it's ok."

I took a deep breath. This was the first time I had opened up about this. I knew it wasn't good to keep things bottled up and I felt I could trust Alex.

"I got this thing from... from my Grandmother when I was 13. My Gran and I were really close. I told her everything. And then..."It was taking a lot of effort to hold back my tears. Alex put his paw on my shoulder supportively. That was all I needed.

"On my 14th, a copper came up to my door and said that...M-my Gran had... been in an accident... a faulty train stop... no survivors..."

"Oh my God..."

The tears were flowing freely now, soaking my cheeks in salty liquid. I hadn't talked about this in so long.

"I... I'm sorry Vincent. I shouldn't have said anything."

"It's not your fault. I just... God I miss her so much!"

Sobbing loudly, I threw myself into Alex' chest and just wept., my paws scrunching up his shirt front. Alex hugged me and patted my head.

"It's ok. She's in a better place now. And besides-" He gently lifted my chin up to look me in the bloodshot eyes- "A person is never truly gone unless you forget about them. As long as you still have the memories of the happy times you shared with her, she'll always be with you."

He whispered reassuringly in my ear. His calming words and his warm breath on my ear made me melt and stemmed the flow of tears. He dried the tears off of my cheek with his thumb. I smiled dreamily at him.

"Thank you Alex. I'm so glad I met you."He smiled back."I'm glad I met you too."

The light of the setting sun lit up Alex' fur making his eyes almost glow. He was so beautiful...

That was it.

I couldn't keep it to myself any longer.

Slowly, I edged closer and closer until my muzzle made contact with his soft lips.

I kissed him.

I kissed Alex with as much passion and tenderness as I could muster. I knew that I had just blown it with the best and most likely the only friend I would ever have. But it was so worth it. I reluctantly broke the kiss and gazed into his bewildered eyes, uttering only one sentence.

"Alex... I love you..."

And that my friends is the biggest cliffhanger you will ever come across! :)
