The Candle

To commemorate my favorite uncle, who lost his battle with Hepatitis C and Liver Cancer on July 17, 2015.

I wanted to light a candle for you,

A simple gesture,

That's for sure.

The flame warm and soothing,

Like your presence on a rainy day.

I wanted to play a song for you,

To show you some things

That I know.

To reciprocate what you had given,

And all of the lessons that you taught.

For me, you were that candle,

Shining and burning hot

In the coldest snow.

Teaching me this or that,

Helping to illuminate ideas in the dark.

I always had questions,

More puzzles to solve.

You always had answers, solutions;

Pieces and parts.

Except for that motherboard,

Three caps blown and out.

I wanted to give you another hug,

To show you that I cared.

To tell you I loved you,

And to me,

How well you had fared.

I was hoping I would make it home,

To see you one last time.

To show you what I learned,

And how it had made me grow.

I wanted to see you,

One last time.

To give you that hug,

To play you that song.

To say goodbye.

I didn't get to see you,

No hug came,

No song played.

But here is a candle,

It burns for you...
