#13 of The Adventures of Devlin Mythryll

The next morning brought nothing but sadness for Devlin. He hadn't slept at all. The fox had spent the night staring at the door from his couch. He hoped that Sin would bring Eros back but he knew that it was very unlikely.

"I was a fool," he said softly. "What was I thinking? I'm a terrible writer. I can't write anything. It was her work all along."

Devlin yawned and closed his eyes. He didn't see the need to stay awake any longer. With a heavy sigh he relaxed his body and tried to go to sleep. His aching heart, however, made that almost impossible. He opened his eyes and stared at his right hand as if the answers to all his problems were written on it.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Devlin slowly got off the couch and went over to the door. He opened the door and smiled a little as he saw Silver.

"Hey Silver," Devlin said, trying to sound cheerful. "What brings you here?"

"I'm just here to see my friend," the crow said. "How are you?"

"I'm doing pretty well. Things have just been going so fast that I can't keep up. It is hard work."

"I bet. How is Nina doing?"

"She is doing just fine," Devlin said sadly.

"Are you sure everything is ok?" Silver asked Devlin. He could tell by the sound of his voice that something was wrong.

Devlin hugged Silver tightly and started to cry.

"Silver, my life is in the gutter again."

"What happened this time? Everything seemed to be going so well."

"That is what I thought too. Then I was reminded how much of a bastard scumbag I am. I used Eros for my own gain and never gave her a second thought."

"Hold on. Who is Eros?" Silver asked, pushing Devlin away from him. "What do you mean you used her for your own gain? What in the world are you talking about?"

"Silver, Nina is not who you think she is. Nina is actually Eros."

"Who is that?"

"She is the cat that you saw in my house. The one that I told you was an alien slave."

"I knew Nina and that feline looked similar. Wait, so she actually is from outer space? You were not kidding about that?"

"No I wasn't. I was telling you the truth. Not that it matters anymore. She is gone. Her sister took her and left. I have no idea where they are right now."

"Wow. I did not know that," Silver said. He then kicked Devlin in the shin. "Why didn't you tell me what had been happening all this time?"

Devlin cringed and grabbed his shin.

"I didn't think it would end up like this," Devlin replied. "I didn't think anything bad would happen. I was too busy thinking about myself." He looked down. "I wasn't thinking about you or anyone else."

"I can't believe you," Silver said with anger in his voice. "You threw me aside for your books. I thought that you had changed after what happened at my house. I was wrong."

"I am sorry," Devlin said as he dropped to his knees and grabbed one of Silver's hands. "I let my drive for personal gain get the better of me. I threw away everything for a fantasy that was probably not meant to be."

"You did much more than that! You broke my heart!"

"I broke your heart?"

"Yes. Here I was thinking that you were someone that actually cared about people. I thought you were someone that cared about me."

Devlin stared at Silver. He was speechless. He knew that he had hurt Silver badly but did he really break Silver's heart? Now he felt really bad.

"Devlin, remember what I said that I loved you back at my house? I really meant that. I do love you. It's ok if you don't feel the same way about me but you could at least be my friend."

"I still am your friend."

"You do not act like it! You act more like you are just using me."

"You are right," Devlin said. "That is all I have been doing lately. I have been using people. I am ashamed of myself. Please forgive me Silver. I am begging you to forgive me. I will do anything to make it up to you."

"You can start by getting up and letting me in the house. You are embarrassing yourself."

Devlin nodded and got on his feet. He sat on the couch and watched as Silver close the door. The fox felt so ashamed. He wanted to curl up and die. He looked into the crow's eyes and saw nothing but sadness in them. Silver was really upset.

"Devlin, do you want to hear what has been going on in my life?"

Devlin nodded.

"Well, I met my internet friend. He is a very nice bear. His name is Trevor."

"That is nice to know."

"But he wanted to know if I knew any blue cats."

Devlin froze in place.

"You have to be kidding me," Devlin said. "Maybe it is a coincidence. I am sure that there are plenty of blue cats out there."

"Yes but why did he ask me?"

"He is probably asking everyone. Did he say why he wanted to know where the blue cat was?"

"No."

"Great. This day can't get any worse. You know what, screw it. I am not going to worry about it. It is her problem."

"This is not just her problem! You are the one that got her in this in the first place!"

"I was not the one that got her in this. I did not force her to land on my doorstep or to become a slave."

"But you continued to treat her like one."

"I tried to free her."

"No. You just used her. You said so yourself."

Devlin gave a sigh. This argument wasn't making him feel any better. At this point, it was unlikely that anything he could do would make it better. He just hoped that Eros was in a better place and was happy.

Eros was in a better place but she was not happy. She was with her sister in a small diner. In front of her was a stack of pancakes. Sin was eating one of three blueberry muffins. The diner itself was full of people.

"Eat your pancakes," Sin said, noticing that Eros hadn't eaten anything.

"I can't eat anything," Eros replied. "Not while I am here. I cannot believe that my own sister kidnapped me."

"I did not kidnap you. I took you from someone that was going to harm you. I did it for your own good. You will thank me one day."

"I was happy."

"No you weren't. You just thought you were happy. You were trained to be a slave. A slave's purpose is to serve a master. Slaves are bred to do and love their purpose."

"But this was different. I actually felt safe with my master. I felt loved."

"He isn't your master anymore. You are free."

"But I don't want to be free. I want to be with Devlin. I want to be with my master."

"Forget it Eros. That is not going to happen."

"You can't force me to do anything."

"I can. I am the only family that you have. That means that I am in charge of you. I have to do everything in my power to make sure you are safe."

Eros shook her head and started to eat her pancakes. Sin reached over and rubbed her head.

"It will be ok, sister. I promise that nothing bad will happen to you."

"Alright," Eros mumbled. "Could I at least use the bathroom?"

"Sure. Just come back."

Eros got up and headed toward the bathroom. Before she got to the bathroom door, however, she ran out the front door. Sin only caught on to what Eros was doing after the blue feline was out the door.

"I am not worried," Sin said softly. "I know exactly where she is going to go. It is a shame that she doesn't have the smarts that I have."

Eros ran down the street. She tried to get an idea of where she was but so far it seemed that she was lost. Eros began to panic and turned a corner, bumping into a male feline. Both she and the male feline fell down.

"I am very sorry," Eros said as she got up.

"It is alright," the male said. "I wasn't looking where I was going. Hey, don't I know you from somewhere?"

Eros looked at the male then took a few steps back. She knew who he was.

"You are the one they call ‘Talloon,'" she said.

"You are correct," Talloon said as he got up. "And I have been looking everywhere for you. You have to come with me."

"I'm not going anywhere with you. You are just going to take me back to your ship and do bad things to me."

"No. I don't want to do that. Listen, I am actually going to try and help you. Where is Devlin?"

"I am not going to tell you. You are just going to hurt him if I tell you."

"I don't plan on doing that. I swear. I want to get you out of this jam that you are in."

"You want to get me away from my sister?" she asked.

"Yes," Talloon answered. "I want to get you and Devlin away from your sister and someone else."

"Do you swear on your life?"

"I swear on my life and my mother's life."

Eros thought about it for a moment. He seemed sincere but Eros didn't fully believe him. On the other hand, if he was telling the truth, he could be able to get her and Devlin to somewhere safe. She quickly made her decision.

"I will go with you," she said.

"Good," Talloon said with a smile. "Now go get Devlin."

"She isn't going anywhere," Sin said, pressing a gun against the back of Talloon's head. "At least, she isn't going anywhere with you."

"Please don't kill me," Talloon said, nervously.

"You haven't changed at all Talloon. You are still the coward that you always were. I am guessing that the bitch sent you here. I wish she was here instead of you. I would have loved to kill her."

"Could you please move that gun from my head?"

"What are you going to do if I don't?"

"I will hurt you."

Sin began to laugh.

"You are such a joke," the female feline said. "You wouldn't hurt me even if I let you."

"How much do you want to bet?" Talloon asked.

"No. I am not going to bet anything. In a few minutes you will be dead."

"Then could I have a last request? Could you tell your sister what you really are?"

"What do you mean?"

"I want you to tell her that you never had her best interest in mind. I want you to tell her that you were one of us. You were one of the slavers."

"Is that true sister?" Eros asked. "Is what he is saying true?"

"No it isn't," Sin replied. "He is just lying to you. I have always had you on my mind."

"Yeah, she was thinking about how to sell you off for profit," Talloon snapped. "She didn't care about you at all. In fact, when we were about to be busted, she wanted to kill you. The only reason that you are alive today is because my boss threw out the idea."

"Shut your mouth!" Sin yelled as she pressed the gun further against the male feline's skull. "You don't know anything!"

"I do know something. You are as much of a coward as I am. But at least I would never kill or sell any person in my family."

"You don't know a damn thing about me! You don't know how hard it was for me. Yes, I did want to sell her. I needed the money. I would have bought her back eventually."

Eros looked shocked and scared. She couldn't believe this was coming from her own sister. It was true. Sin was a slaver.

"You are such a liar," Talloon said. "You never loved her. Never once did you actually care for her."

"SHUT UP!" Sin yelled as her trigger finger started to twitch. "You are going to die now!"

She smirked and squeezed the trigger. Just before the bullet came out of the gun, a shot rang out and Sin fell to the floor. Blood started to come of the back of her head and there was a bullet hole in the center of her forehead. Talloon and Eros looked at each other then ran off in the direction of Devlin's house, hoping to get there before they ended up like Sin.
