Taken: It was a warm Friday afternoon when Brendan (no, not the Pokémon trainer) was walking with his friend Marcus on the way to the school bus that would take them home for the day. The two students stopped by their lockers and put some away some unnecessary luggage before regrouping at the entrance of the building.

"Arceus, all I can think about is catching my first Pokémon at the Pokémon Safari later today. You are going to come, right?" "I don't know man, my parents are out, and my little sister is sick, so I have to watch over her for the time being." "Dude, it's going to be half as fun without you. Besides, you were gonna pay for half of the supplies!" "Don't worry, I knew I probably wasn't going be able to make it, so I brought the money with me to school."

Marcus then rushes back to his locker and grabs what looks very similar to a roll of $10 bills. He then shuts his locker and quickly jogs back to Brendan who is just staring at the wad of cash, wondering how Marcus managed to get so much.

"Sixty..., eighty..., and one hundred! Here you go, here's my half, so don't be pissed at me, okay?" "*Sigh* Fine, but I still think you should still try to come." "My parents are supposed to be coming home today, so I may be able to go. I'll just be very, very late. And that's if they even let me go." "Marcus, it is Friday night and we're fourteen, it's not like your parents would have a heart attack if you were gone for a couple of hours. You could even leave a note just to be nice." Brendan said with a smirk. "S-Shut up! Fine! I'll sneak out! But I'm blaming you if anything goes wrong!" "Deal!" Brendan said with a grin as he patted Marcus on the back.

The two then got on the bus, planning out how the evening's events would take place. The drive home was painfully long, for Brendan since he was the last stop on the bus route. Brendan lived in a small town called Wake Forest in the Sinnoh region. Marcus and Brendan were neighbors and best friends since forever, and both of their families enjoyed each other very well. It was almost like they were one big, happy family. In fact, when a family member was hurt, or ill, the other family would always step in and help. When Brendan arrived home, he went up to his mail box and checked to see if there was any mail. There wasn't any, so that must've meant one of his parents had already beat him to it. He climbed up his porch, and grabbed the key to the front door which was cleverly hidden in a statue, before unlocking the door and placing the key back.

"Mooom, I'm home!! Is dinner ready yet?" Brendan yelled. "Dinner? Honey, it's only 4:00. Why, are you in a rush?" Brendan's mom replied from the kitchen. "Don't you remember? I get to go to the Safari for the very first time, and I might get to meet my life-long partner! Wouldn't you be in a bit of a rush if you had a chance like this?"

She stepped into the hallway, an amused expression on her face.

"Oh, that's today! Ha-ha, you're right, you should be excited. Okay, go upstairs, and get changed. Then come down and make yourself a sandwich or something, and then you can go. Is Marcus going too?" "Oh, well... maybe." With that, he bolted upstairs into his room. "Maybe?" thought Brendan's mother. She just shrugged it off and continued making the family dinner.

In his room, Brendan threw his backpack by his desk and immediately stripped down. He had already laid out clothes for the Safari on his bed before he went to school, so he already knew what he was going to wear. When he got down to just his boxers, he took a glance at himself in the full-body mirror. He didn't have any sort of interesting features, but he was far from unhealthy. Tan, and standing at about 5'5, with Dark brown hair, and lighter brown eyes. He was well admired at his school, more because of his personality than for his looks. He then quickly shook his head, snapping him back to reality, and began dressing into a red athletic shirt and black shorts. He then bolted downstairs and quickly made a ham and cheese sandwich.

"Alright, I'm off!" he yelled. "WAAAIIITT!!" came a sudden scream. Brendan froze in his tracks only to turn around. "Geez, Ivy you don't have to be so loud! Whatever, do you need something?" "You're going to the Safari right? Make sure you tell me what it's like, and if you get the chance, catch me an eevee!" she said with an excited squeal. "That's enough Ivy, let your brother go." Their mother said calmly. "Promise, big bro?" Ivy begged, giving her older brother a puppy-dog face. He just grinned. "Promise." He said as he patted her head and went out the front door.

Brendan grabbed his bike that was leaning next to the porch and checked to see if he had his wad of cash with him.

"Check. Alright, Pokémon Safari, here I come!" he yelled as he pedaled off down the sidewalk.

After a couple minutes of riding his bike, he reached the Pokémon Safari. He then parked his bike across the street, and crossed the road with a content sigh, calming his excited nerves. As he was crossing the road, a white van came barreling down the road, causing him to dive towards the sidewalk. "HEY! Slow down, asshole!" Brendan screamed. "Ouch- crap. That'll leave a nasty bruise." He said as he stood up and walked towards the building. Before he walked inside, he noticed that the crazy white van had parked just down the street, and a pair of men were climbing out. Thinking they were after him, he quickly entered the building, not looking back. Inside the one floor building were a couple of tables, an info desk with a woman with a fake smiling expression plastered on her face, and two doors leading outside to the Safari area. Brendan walked up to the lady, and pulled out his wad of cash.

"Umm, how much for the 'Starter Catching Kit'?" "That'll be forty dollars please."

Brendan paid the price and received around fifty pieces of bait, and around forty Safari balls which was a pretty good deal. He then walked through the double doors and into the Safari area. But what he didn't see, were the two men from the white van walk into the building.

"Hello, how may I help-"

She couldn't finish as one of the two men pulled out a tranquilizer and shot what they called a "night-night" dart into her neck. She fell to the floor unconscious immediately.

"Alright, you got the equipment, right?" "Yeah, got the nets, Safari balls, and 'night-night' darts ready to go." "Good, the boss said he needed at least 50 test subjects, all of different species. And by the looks of it, we only have around an hour get the job done. And if anyone gets in our way, we can take them to the boss who said any test subject would do. Clear?" "Roger that."

The two strange men then walked through the Safari area doors, starting their dirty work.

(Back with Brendan): "Oh wow! This place is just as I imagined it!" Brendan stepped out into the Safari area, just in time to see the sun starting to set, showing off the sky's brilliant colors. He took a deep breath, admiring the fresh outdoor air, and began his quest to find a life-long partner. After around half-an-hour, Brendan started to notice that the Pokémon were acting very strange. They seemed terrified of Brendan, and acted like they wanted to stay far away from him. Disappointed, he sat down with his back against a tree, and pulled a granola bar from his pocket, and began munching on it.

"Huh, *crunch* I wonder why the Pokémon are avoiding me *crunch*. Do I smell funny? *sigh* at this rate, I'll never be able to find a life-long partner."

But all too soon, his snack was interrupted when he heard a wild Pokémon's cry.

"YES! Now's my chance to catch one!"

He got up and ran towards where he heard the scream. A few short seconds later, he arrived at a small clearing where he found the source of the sound... and saw a vulpix caught in some type of net. He then saw two men come out from behind some tall grass. Brendan then suddenly realized they were the two men from the crazy white van.

"Nice shot Bart!" said one of the men. "Thanks Ian, and that makes specimen number 35. Only 15 more to go." Replied the other man who is presumably Bart. "What are you guys doing to that poor vulpix?!" Brendan yelled.

The two men looked up at him and then at each other, chuckling.

"Well, look what we have here. You're the kid we almost ran over." Said Bart. "Yeah sorry about that, I didn't try to hit you, honest. We're just... in a hurry." Inquired Ian. "You know that using outside equipment in the Safari area is illegal, right?" asked Brendan. "Yeah, but it gets the job done faster. So, no harm done right? Now just run along, and you won't get hurt. Oh, and don't tell anyone because we will find you." "I'm not gonna believe that bullcrap! Let it go!" "*sigh* I was afraid we were going to have to do this. Bart, I think it's nap-time for junior." Said Ian. "Nap time? What the fuck?"

Brendan then saw Bart pull out some type of blow gun, and realized he was in trouble. But it was too late, as he felt a sudden sting in the back of his neck, which was followed by an intense feeling of fatigue. The last thing he remembered was collapsing to the ground and hearing both men say:

"Lights out junior."

(With Marcus): "Arceus, I hope my parents don't kill me. This better be worth it."

Marcus soon arrived to Safari Zone, and saw Brendan's bike across the street. He sighed, content on knowing that his friend was here. He then parked his bike next to Brendan's and crossed the road. Before he entered the building, he noticed two men start the engine to their white van, and take off down the road.

"Crazy drivers these days." He muttered as he shook his head and entered the building.

Once inside, he noticed that it was seemingly empty inside.

"Hello? Anybody here?" he asked.

He was about to call Brendan, when he heard a small groan from behind the counter. He walked up to it and peeked over the top, and noticed the desk lady slumped on the floor. She was starting to wake, it looked like, and so Marcus helped her up.

"Miss, are you alright? Do you need me to call someone?" "Thank you, but I'm fine. Although, I don't know where those two men went." "Two men? You mean the ones that parked down the street?" "Yes, I guess so." "Well, my friend here came earlier. Do you know where he is?"

She suddenly tried to stand up, concern and worry clearly showing across her face.

"Oh no... your friend... he's still out there. I think those men were poachers, who kidnap living creatures, Pokémon and humans, and use them as living test subjects. We need to see if he's alright."

The two then hurriedly walked into the Safari area. It was deathly silent. They began calling out Brendan's name, but didn't hear any response whatsoever. After an hour, Marcus then decided to call the police. When the police arrived, all they found were footmarks which led to signs of a struggle, and a granola bar wrapper. Fear suddenly welling up in him, Marcus decided to break the news to Brendan's parents.

"Brendan... where are you?"

As he pedaled home, he began thinking if he would ever see his childhood friend again.
