Chapter 7: When Life Gives You Lemons

The sun had set and Koto was still walking through the forest. The moon was full and streams of faded light shone through the leaves of the forest. Koto had wandered through this forest many times and knew his way around quite well. However, something felt off to the jolteon. It was as if he could feel something, creeping up on him.

He stopped a minute to think about the recent events. Can I be someone else's pokémon? I don't know if I can go through with something like that. Not after what I've experienced. His shoulder was still very sore, and it took much effort to do anything, but Koto was one to push past pain. Damn, how long is thing gonna drag me down? He let out a sigh, when will I be able to do anything right?

Just then Koto heard a noise above him. He jumped to a defensive stance trying to block out the pain. Looking up he saw a dark menacing murkrow. It's eyes dimly glowed a soft silver, and it was covered in strange markings. "Well hello, Koto," the bird said in a deep, almost raspy voice.

"Who are you," Koto asked with a growl, preparing for the possibility of attack.

"Oh that's not important right now," the murkrow responded. "Your decisions, those are what's important. We've been watching you. You're strong, and we need someone like you."

"What do you mean? Need me for what," Koto inquired, unhappy with the murkrow's lack of elaboration.

"Oh, but you need us too. Well, let's just say....we can help each other. That is, if you want to save your dear little Kara, the one that seems to have taken a shining to you, and stop team Epsilon," The bird hissed at Koto.

"Save Kara? I just saw her, and what's team Epsilon?" Koto was becoming more confused.

"Oh, you know those people you've had a couple run ins with. The black coats.... ring any bells?" The murkrow asked in tone of mockery.

"What about them? What are they doing?"

"They're being lead by one of your old friends. What was his name again? Oh yes, It was Matthias."

"No, he's dead. The building he was in was demolished!"

"And yet he lives. You know what he's after. He wants total domination and you can help stop it."

"Why should I trust you?"

"So far you have no reason to, but like I said, we could help each other a lot."

"I don't need you, or anyone, i'm fine as I am."

"Oh really. Are you sure you don't want to join the shadows?"

Koto stared at the dark bird, "What did you just say?"

It was late at night and everyone in rustboro was scared. Most to scared to sleep, but some managed through commotion of being tightly packed together in only a few of the building in the rather large city.

Matthias walked out of the devon corp building. Well, we'll see how this goes. I have high hopes. "Sylvia, is the intercom system set up throughout the city?"

"Yes sir," the general responded. "Everything is in place and we are ready to begin reevaluation of the city. Here you go sir," she said handing him a communication device connected to loudspeakers everywhere in the city.

Matthias looked over the device. He quickly took notice of the switch on it's side and flipped to the on position. Pressing the speak button on the side, he began to talk, "testing." The words blared loudly through the city. Everyone covered their ears in pain. "Sylvia, turn down the damn volume."

"Already on it sir," she replied dutifully, messing around with settings on a tablet of sorts. "And done. Try it now sir."

Matthias pressed the speak button once more and repeated, "testing." This time the sound could be heard everywhere as it was meant to without being unbearably loud. Matthias raised an eyebrow at sylvia.

Sylvia looked at the tablet. "Sir, good reports all over the city. All speakers functional except for two. We'll have them replaced by morning."

"Are they in areas that will hamper our progress now, or shall we continue?" Matthias asked her worriedly.

"You may continue sir." Sylvia answered quickly.

"Good," Matthias very to pleased to finally start. "Let's get this show on the road. Gunther, send twenty units to each building with citizens in it."

"Yes sir, troops underway now sir," Gunther said and moved on to began directing the members of team epsilon.

Matthias held up the communication device and pressed the speak button again, "Citizens of Rustboro! Please prepare to be moved out of the buildings you are currently in! We ask you to wait in line so that we can properly escort back to your former home, apartment, or other living space! When you are brought back, your place of residency will be documented properly, and you are to remain there until further instructions! No harm will come to anyone as long as you comply!" He let go of the speak button. "Gunther!" Matthias yelled.

"Sir!" Gunther said running over.

"Remember, if any citizens resist, do nothing more than restrain them," Matthias explained carefully. "I don't want any unnecessary harm coming to my populace."

"Yes sir," Gunther began contacting the teams on his radio.

Matthias put the device in his pocket and began to walk back towards the Devon Corp. building. I'm on the road to creating the perfect world. Free of worry. No more common thieves, or any other crime, and there's nothing in my way. Matthias reached over to his shoulder where his normal communicator was, "Kuzu, how is it going with the E.R.T.I.S?"

"We're setting up now!" Kuzu yelled over the sound of many machines and blowtorches putting the E.R.T.I.S. in its new location under the Devon Corp. building. "We have several volunteers for the first test with the extracted material from before! When should we begin?!"

Matthias smiled and took a deep breath. It was perfect. Everything just fell in place like he knew it would. After a moment of indulgence he finally answered Kuzu, "ASAP."

Zack was sitting outside of a café sipping on fresh cup of coffee and reading the newspaper. He didn't really care for newspapers to much. They had always seemed rather dull and never told him anything... well... new. It was a bright sunny morning and the town he was was busy with happy folk all around.

He just finished his coffee and was about to get up from the table when he saw her. The most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She had flowing red hair, and a nice figure. Her face was sunkist and she had bright blue eyes.

Zack quickly got up walked over to her. "Hello, and who might you be?"

"Jolt." she replied quickly.

"Uhh... Jolt huh," Zack said. "That seems a little unusual. I'm Zack," He stated reaching out for a handshake.

"Jolt," she said again and poked Zack on the cheek.

Zack reached his hand to his face where she had poked him. "Umm, what?" He was dumbfounded.

"Jolteon," she said once more and poked him again.

"I don't understand." He said becoming more confused.

Then she gave him an angry look and reared her hand back. Zack tried to prepare for the blow but he couldn't move his arms fast enough. Her slap hit home.

Zack awoke with start. Then he noticed a face with a bloodshot eye less than five inches from his own and jumped again. "Whoa! Shi... you scared the crap out of me." Zack said rubbing his head.

Koto sat back slightly amused by the display. "Well I'm sorry we can't all have a pretty face," Koto said quietly, as there were others around sleeping as well.

Zack stared at Koto for a second before speaking up. "Dude, I got no idea what you're saying."

Koto let out what Zack assumed was a sigh and motioned towards the pokéballs by Zack's backpack.

Zack quickly came to realization. "Wait, you're saying you do want to be my pokémon." Koto gave a quick nod. "You sure? You made your point pretty clear earlier."

"Yes, but there are things I want to look into, and I think it's time I moved on. Time I found a new life," Koto responded thinking about what was to come.

Zack stared at him. "I still have no idea what you're saying, but I think I'll take it as a yes." Koto nodded in agreement. "Come here," Zack said patting the ground next to the tree where he was. Koto walked over and curled up next to the tree. Before long he was asleep.
