The White Empire

By Delta Dawg 117

The smell of corpses filled the air. It's a stench that can't really be compared to any other, as it is so putrid, and so depriving of hope. But then again, the stench was not coming from the bodies of our soldiers, no,

it arose from the battlefield littered with the cold bodies of the insurgents who dared defy the Emperor. The dissidents were slaughtered by the Emperor's very own royal guard. Not a single honorable sergal of the guard

was lost on this day. As the transport slowly flew over the battlefield, I caught a glimpse of the corpses littering the ground. The rebels wore nothing other than rags and everyday clothing, and their wepons seemed to consist of mainly makeshift

laser rifles and stolen military equipment. It became obvious that the only reason this particular group of insurgents caused problem was due to the sheer size of their group. Unlike other rebellions, which slowly formed over time and only made

themselves obvious when they were ready to take on the army, this one had practically formed overnight. It consisted of a good 900-1,500 men and boys, who raided military bases in the black of night and hid in the forests.

The transport finally landed in a area that had been turned into a Forward Operating Base (F.O.B.). I dismounted and made my way over to Rex, the brave sergal who lead the assault on the rebel base. He saw me and smiled,

turning away from the monitor he was viewing. "Ahh!" he said. "My dear friend! What a suprise! I didn't expect to see you out of the hospital so soon." I had been wounded in a battle above Eridinus Prime-1, when the cruiser I

was on was hit by a surface-atmosphere missile. "Yes, well, I couldn't stay away from the action that long!" I replied, embracing him. "I take it you had fun with this operation," I said, looking towards the clearing littered

with bodies. He chuckled, putting his arm around me. "No, this time they were annoyingly persistent." I chuckled a bit, then shivered. "Come, you must be cold."

He lead me into the tent full of computers and monitors being closely watched by his assistants. He gestured for me to sit in a small chair set up next to his "desk" (which was really just a folding table with a laptop on it).

"So," he began, sitting down. "What brings you here?" "Well, I'd think that should be obvious." I replied. He thought for a moment, looking puzzled. "Ah!" he exclaimed, digging through a pile of papers on his desk. He slid a

folder labled "Confidential" to me across the table. I picked it up and opened it, examining the contents. It was a standard report, with details regarding the battle. "Everything seems to be in order..." I murmured. "Of course it is!"

he replied. "Have you ever known me to hand in an incomplete report?" I looked at him and smiled. "No, you're always quite adamant about kissing the Emperor's ass." He gave a hearty laugh. Rex always had that big personality. He was

a Northern Sergal, and a big one at that. His dark blue fur and white abdomen complimented his cold sense of humor, which I found to be very entertaining. I was his polar opposite, having no sense of humor and being raised in the

South. My coat of fur was an embarrassingly thin, light brown. Come to think of it really the only two things I had going for me were my intelligence and my agility (based on various test results).

I was skimming through the folder some more when I came upon something that looked out of place. I took it out and examined it. It was a file on several different military warriors. "What are these?" I asked. He leaned in and

got a good look at the file. "Oh. Those are the warriors that were found fighting with the rebels." I froze. "What?" I was at a loss for words. This was unheard of. Rebellions like this usually consisted of only worker-class sergals.

Of course every once in a while a few deserters were found among the ranks of the rebels, but I had never seen an entire sub-file devoted entirely to deserters. "Oh yeah," he began, taking the small folder from me. "Seventeen of them.

One was even an officer." I sat there staring at him in disbelief. This was definetly a first.

"I was suprised as well," he explained. "This was completely out of the blue. But my theory is that these soldiers-sorry-deserters were the ones who insighted the rebellion. They must have gotten fed up with the constant

warring and imperialism. As of now, I'm just glad they didn't get their hands on any REAL military hardware." I finally managed to recollect myself, and looked at the folder one more time. "But how did they manage to leave their

posts without being noticed?" He thought for a moment. "I don't have a definite answer..." he began. "But if I had to guess, I would say that they waited until they were in close proximity to each other, then escaped during a

guard shift or a transfer. At least, that would be the safest way to do it." I put the file back into the big folder, and put the folder into my satchel. "Well, I suppose this is a mystery that should be left to the Emperor's elite

to puzzle together." "Indeed," Rex replied, standing up.

He escorted me back to the awaiting transport. Just before I got on, I turned to him. "Rex." I began. "What?" "I'm glad you're okay." He stared at me for a moment, then smiled. "Don't be like that," he replied, gently

pushing me into the transport. I waved to him just as the transport ascended. But I was still distressed. (Come on Lohan!) I thought to myself. (You can figure this out!) As the transport slowly glided through the sky, I

began to put the pieces together. (Wait...) The transport began to slow. (It couldn't be...) The transport was now hovering. (No...) It was them. This whole thing was a setup. They just wanted the royal guard in one place. But I

never got the chance to tell the transport driver to turn around. The transport ship was quickly descending, and it was a matter of seconds before we crashed.

Thinking on my feet, I pushed the emergency release button and jettisoned the troop carrier pod. I was jerked towards the left, and then went into a freefall before crashing into a snowbank some 50 meters away. Stunned,

I clambered out of the pod just in time to see the main transport go up in a blaze. The two guards climbed out after me, spears drawn. They were ready for the fight we all knew was coming. Suddenly, we heard a screech, and a dark blur

swooped over us. It was a sergal in a=black armor riding a dragon native to this planet. It landed on a hill above us and screeched again, signaling the hundreds of black armor-clad sergals that ran down from he mountains. This wasn't a rebellion.

We were caught in the middle of an attack by the Ashvalians.
