A Person in Need

Chapter 3: Changed Opinions

"Well, this is gonna be awkward." Zachariah could not help but think to himself, as he walked down the halls looking for the collie that he had received a kiss from but one night ago. "Okay, I just gotta walk up and tell her how I feel." He had been up all last night thinking about what had happened, and realized that he felt the same way she presumably did. He always felt good while he was around her and she did not judge or avoid him because of his personality. "But what do I say?" He thought furiously. He had never been to interested in anyone before. Sure, there were plenty of pretty girls out there, but he never really could picture himself going out with someone. "This collie is screwing with my mind! Okay I'm just gonna walk up and ask her to a movie or something." When he saw her, he began to panic. His uncaring, unconcerned attitude towards life was violently changed when he met her. "I can't be expected to adjust to this... well new type of feeling so fast." He thought, and nervously walked towards her.

"So, I heard about your little date with Zachy last night...." Mellina said in a smug voice "How did it go, Didja kiss him?!"

"Oh, I bet she did!" Jessica, another cat but with white fur and brown spots. "Look! I bet that's his jacket!" The girls said, starting to giggle.

Rio, face turning red, lied in an angry voice "I didn't kiss him, and he gave me the jacket because it was raining!" The girls only giggled harder. She didn't understand what they found so funny until she felt a light tap on her shoulder, and turned to see Zachariah looking at her with a little smile on his face. Face turning red, she took off the jacket that she had tightly wrapped around her, and handed it to him with a quiet, "Thanks." She then looked at him and opened her mouth to apologize for what happened As she tried to voice her apologies, she felt arms around her, and a muzzle drawing close. His lips touched hers, in a tight kiss. This time it was her turn to go wide eyed, but as he lifted her up, holding the kiss tightly, she wrapped her arms around him, and held the kiss until she was running short of breath.

"I didn't get to properly apologize for what happened at the bar." He said to her in a quiet voice. She could only mutter a tiny response before pulling him into a tight hug, and burying her head into his chest. Mellina and Jessica were giggling uncontrollably until Rio turn to them and said in a smug voice, "So girls, how are your boyfriends? This little comment stopped their giggling dead in its tracks. They gave her evil looks and walked away.

"Well then," Zach said an awkward voice. "Looks like you made them mad...." She only pulled him into a tighter hug.

"They'll be okay. They'll probably come back with boyfriends."

"So I guess that means that we're..." She cut him off with a quick kiss on the cheek.

"You got it cutie, now lets go to class before we get written up." And with that, she walked ahead of him, swaying her hips seductively. Upon getting class, they took a seat together at the back so that they could talk. By the end of class, Rio knew that his favourite color was cobalt, while being a big fan of all types of metal, he also enjoyed heavy strings, and that his middle name was Patrick. She had also told him a lot about herself. He told her how her favourite color was green, she did not really have a favourite type of music, and that her middle name was Jacklyn. They walked to the science room hand in hand but could not help but over hear gossip going around about them.

"Did you hear about Rio? She dating that new goth kid!"

"They've only known each other for like 2 days!"

"What an odd couple, how much ya wanna bet it won't last till the end of the week!" While she was offended and a little hurt by theses comments, she couldn't help but feel happy when she looked up and saw him smiling back at her. Their science class was spent much differently than their English. The teacher, an old wolf with black hair and bits of gray all over. As soon as he came in, he gave the class an exceptional amount of work which took up the entire class. This disappointed Rio, because she wanted to talk to Zach, but they had to part ways while he went to music and she went to lunch. He walked to the cafeteria with her and when they got there, he just looked at her nervously, not knowing what to do next. Rio just giggled and, moving forward, gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

"I... uh... have a good lunch." He said nervously.

Laughing, she said, "I'm not going to bite you." He laughed a bit and then gave her a small hug and walked away cursing himself.

"Why am I so nervous?" He asked himself, angry. "This is going to be hard adjusting."

Rio was still giggling quietly when her friend showed up.

"What's so funny?" Alisa said, sitting beside her.

"It's Zachariah, I don't think he's used to having a girlfriend."

"Oh. So the rumours are true?"

"Yeah, I don't know why, but I really like being with him."

"But he's so... depressing."

"Not when you get to know him."

"Whatever you say." she said, sitting across from her. The rest of lunch was spent in silence until about five minutes before the bell rang, when Rio looked up. She had been thinking about it through the entire lunch, and decided that she did want to prove to Alisa that their was a side to Zachariah that was not the depressing goth kid that everyone saw.

"Hey, come with me. I wanna show you something."

"Okay, as long as were not late for class." They got up, and she led her to the music room. Zach's class had already gone to lunch, but she hoped that Zach was still there again. She gave a little smile when she heard the sounds of an acoustic guitar upon opening the music door.

"We've gotta be quiet." Rio warned, and they slowly walked towards the sound of the music. As they got close, Rio heard a gasp escape Alisa's lips as she saw him. Rio loved his voice and sat there in silence, listening to him play. As he finished and began to pack up, Rio and Alisa quietly left.

"Wow." was all she could say "Just... wow. How come he doesn't tell people?"

"I don't know, maybe he's nervous?"

"Has he told you?" Rio suddenly stopped.

"No... no he hasn't" she suddenly couldn't help but feel a little hurt. She had told him everything about herself right down to her favourite type of cereal, and he didn't tell her quite possibly the most important thing about him.

"You should ask him about it. Tell him you overheard him playing and that you want to know why he never told you." Rio gave it some thought, and agreed and decided to ask him on the way home. The rest of the day went normally, with Rio trying to get it out of him during their last period class. She walked to their locker and asked him to walk home with her. He agreed, and on the way home she just came out with it.

"Why didn't you tell me that you play guitar?" He stopped and turned to her, his face turning red.

"I... what... how?" He was stuttering a lot so she took the opportunity to continue.

"I heard and saw you playing today when I came to get you for last period."

"I -- I guess that I never really thought of myself as good at it, so I never brought it up." He said, blushing and shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

"What do you mean? Your amazing! Don't be all, 'oh I'm not good enough with me'!"

"Sorry..." was all he said. She walked up and kissed him.

"Don't worry about it, but don't give me all that I'm not good enough crap." she paused "And don't neglect to tell me something big like that ever again." He gave a small smile.

"Okay, I promise." When they arrived at Rio's house, she turned around to say goodbye, and found herself being pulled into a tight kiss. Wanting it to last, she wrapped her arms around him and tried to relive last night. He put his arms around her and lifted her a bit. As they broke, she didn't want him to leave, but knew it had to happen.

"I'll see ya tomorrow." He said with his cute little smile.

"Bye, have a good night." She called, going inside feeling very good, until she saw the look on her brother's face.

"So squirt, who's the boy?" He said in a voice of pure joy.

"No one, now leave me alone." Rio said, already knowing she would never hear the end of it.

"Didn't look like no one by the way you two locked lips!" He was still smiling widely.

"So what if I like him? Just because you don't have a girlfriend, doesn't mean you have to make fun of me."

"Sister dearest," He said in an innocent voice. "I would never make fun of you for having a boyfriend. I'm just hurt at the thought of you thinking that I would ever make fun of you." She walked by, hitting him hard on the shoulder, and went up to take a shower. She could hear her brother singing something about them getting married and yelled at him to grow up. She got out and dried off, suddenly realizing that she still had a good six hours before she would have to go to bed. She sat down at her desk and logged onto her email. Her messages where full of the usual spam, so this did not occupy her for very long. She found herself wondering what Zach was doing. Rio suddenly realized that she was thinking about him a lot lately.

"Okay, I know I like him, but I gotta stop obsessing about him." Looking at her clock, she noticed it was only five. "Maybe if I try to sleep." She got into bed and found that she was actually very tired. Putting her head down happily, she fell into a deep sleep. She got up what felt like only minutes later, and looking at her clock, realized it had been hours. It was eleven at night, and she was wondering why she got up until she heard a tapping noise on the window and looked around only to see Zach looking at her through her window. Getting up quickly, Rio went to her window and lifted it up.

"Why are you here so late?" She asked in a groggy voice. His face was covered in sweat as if he had run here, and she saw that his clothes were torn and dirty. "W -- what happened?"

"I need a place to stay." He said it in a low voice. "M -- my parents kicked me out." This woke her up and Zach mistook the surprised look on her face. "I knew it was a bad idea. I'm sorry." As he turned around, she reached out and grabbed his arm. "No, don't go. What happened?" Rio was awake and concerned now.

"I -- well I don't really want to talk about it right now. But if it's okay, can I maybe sleep on the couch?" While she was sad outside, inside she was jumping with joy. Always having Zach around would be good. She did not care if the relationship was going too fast, she loved him and she knew it, no matter what anyone said.

"Yeah it's okay, you can go on the couch." She let him in, and he pulled her into a tight kiss, holding her in his arms. Rio gave a small moan as he moved in closer, rubbing against her chest. He broke the kiss and she fell forward, still in the moment. He grabbed her before she hit the ground and she gave a small thanks as he pulled her back up. "Uh okay." she said with a red face. "I -- I'll go get some blankets."

"No, it's okay." Zach said, sitting down and leaning against the wall.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, I'll be okay." He leaned back and closed his eyes as she got back into bed. Getting a little courage, Rio turned over and asked, "You know... there's a lot of extra room up here?" He gave her a small smile.

"I would like to, but my clothes are really dirty and I don't want to mess up your bed."

"Okay, then." Her ears dropped a little and she turned over. She suddenly felt stupid. It was going quick with Zach, but she was taking it much too fast. She turned over and looked at him. His eyes were closed and his hair was all over his face. He had a peaceful look on his face with his ears back ans his head down. Rio could not help but stare at him until he looked up and back at her.

"Is everything okay?" Zach asked, giving her a confused look.

"Oh, yeah. Sorry." She turned around with her face red. Feeling sleep overtaking her again, she put her head down and dozed off. She woke up to the sound of yelling, and looked up to find her door open and Zachariah gone. Getting up quickly, she ran down stairs and saw her mother pushing Zach out the door

"You dirty, vile child! Breaking into our house and spying on our daughter! If I find out that you did anything to her God help me, I'll find you!

"Mom! What are you doing!" She ran up and grabbed her hand.

"This!" she looked at him with disgust in her eyes. "Child broke into our house and was spying on you while you slept!"

"Mom! He's not a creeper, He's a friend." Her mother stopped and turned to look at her.

"You're going to have to explain." Rio sighed and, looking at Zach with a very sorry look on her face, pulled her mother into the next room.

"Mom, I let him in, he's my friend."

"How and where did you meet someone like that?" Her mother asked, giving her an odd look.

"We go to the same school. I showed him around and we became friends."

"Then why is he here?"

"Well, he -- he got kicked out of his house." Rio looked down, waiting for the tidal wave of yelling. Her mother just looked at her with a confused, but knowing look.

"Why -- why did he come here?" She did this to Rio all the time. She knew the answer to the question

already, but wanted Rio to answer just to bother her.

"Well we... we're... I..." Her mother just started to giggle like a child.

"You've got a boyfriend!" Her mother was giving her a big smile, and then turned and looked in the kitchen where Zach was still standing in the doorway. "Oh he's cute too. But he should change his clothes. Why did he get kicked out?"

"Mom!" She looked at her mother with a red blush. "And I don't know why he got kicked out, he never told me."

"He was so cooperative, I hope he didn't do anything bad."

"He wouldn't. I know him, it's not like him." She paused, thinking. "Uh mom, is it okay if he maybe stays here for a bit?" He mother gave a concerned look.

"I don't know dear, don't you think it's a little soon to be trusting him?"

"Mom, I know he looks bad, but he's a good person. I know this, don't ask me why, I just do."

"Well I guess we can let him stay for a bit." Rio looked up with a smile and hugged her mom tightly.

"Thanks mom! I promise that nothing bad will happen!"

"I sure hope so." Rio quickly ran into the other room and grabbed Zach, saying, "I'm really sorry about that, but everything is okay. You can stay here as long as you need to." Just then her mother walked in.

"I'm sorry about that dear. If you need anything, please feel free to ask me."

"Um, okay, uh sorry for giving you the wrong impression."

"Oh no dear, don't worry." Rio looked at her mother, leading Zach out of the room and upstairs to her room. It was Saturday, so they could spent the whole day together. When they got in, and Rio closed the door, She pushed Zach onto the bed and jumped on top of him, hugging him tightly. He hugged her back and she looked up, still on top of him.

"So, what do you want to do today?" She asked, cutely smiling down at him.

"I'm okay with anything you want to do, but I would like to change into something more... well clean."

"Oh okay, lets go raid my brother's closet." She got up happily and ran to her brother's room. He was at work now, so she could just walk in. Zach was behind her looking nervous. "It's cool, we'll look for stuff he doesn't wear anymore." Rio then began to go through his closet. "My brother used to be a goth..." Rio paused. "Like you, like what you wear." Rio came out with a black shirt and a very old, very torn pair of jeans. "How's this, looks like what you wear."

"Okay, um.. where can I change?"

"Just go into the bathroom, it's the door beside my room." He left the room, and she went down stairs to wait. A couple minutes later, Zach walked down and looked like he did everyday. "Okay, so I was thinking that we should go see that new horror movie and then we can go to the park."

"Okay." He pulled $10 from his pocket. "This is enough for tickets, right?"

"Yeah, that should work." They walked to the theatre and sat down in the back. The movie was another slasher flick involving a bunch of teenagers and a campsite. Rio didn't see too much because she was covering her eyes. Zach, on the other hand, did not seem even slightly scared, when everyone would gasp or scream, he would just give a small, comical yawn. He even laughed a little at the part where the body fell out of the tree and landed in front of the campers. When they left, Rio was still a little jumpy and tripped over a bench when Zach came up behind her.

"Oh... um sorry."

"No no no, that was a really scary movie."

"I've seen better."

"Does anything scare you?" Rio asked as Zach pulled her up.

"Plenty of things scare me, just not slasher flicks." They left and Rio did not want to go to the park anymore, she wanted to go home. That movie scared her.

"Hey Zach, is it okay if we don't go to the park?"

"Movie scared you that bad?" He said, his voice containing a little chuckle.

"No! I'm just tired." Rio said, cheeks turning red. As they arrived home, Rio's mother was in the kitchen and greeted them with a big smile.

"Well hello there you two love birds! Did you enjoy the movie?" Her mother always did this to her.

"Mom!" Her mother just giggled and went back to the dishes. Rio and Zach went upstairs to Rio's room and sat down on her bed. "That movie was really scary."

"It wasn't that bad."

"What are you saying! Did you see what that guy did to that police man?"

"Yeah that was pretty funny."

"You're twisted."

"I know." He smiled at her and she moved forward and kissed him. His face turned a little red. "Well then. Is that what I get for being twisted?"

"No, you get that 'cause I -- " Rio paused, but then decided that her feelings were not lying to her, and she did mean it. "'Cause I love you." Zachariah's and Rio's faces burned red, but, promising herself that she would not let that little comment stop her, she went close beside him wrapped her arms around him, leaning her head on his shoulder. Zach looked at her and nervously opened his mouth.

"I -- I love... you, too." Rio's heart jumped, she knew he liked her, but she did not expect a reaction like that. She looked into his green eyes, and their lips met in a long kiss. They fell down on the bed, lips still locked. Rio gave a small coo, which he returned and they held the kiss for as long as they could hold their breath, and when they broke, cuddled up under the covers and fell asleep in each others arms.

END

Well, this is a little longer than the others, but I liked writing it. Everyone who thinks the love is going too fast sucks >=3, but c'mon, we've all been 16, and we've all seen someone that we instantly fell in love with, so yeah. Hope you liked reading it. =D (Please note that the school year started on a Wednesday or Thursday.)
