Chapter 12 -- Snug

Lights faded on as he entered. They were in recessed sconces, just like those in the passageways and entrance. There was no door to close, so no real privacy, although sounds seemed muted somehow. Acoustic absorbers in the walls, maybe?

The room looked ideal, if you were a rabbit. A small, dark opening on the other side of the snug must be a second exit. Much of the space was occupied by a large platform bed, big enough for several people and quite high. A large, soft, grey cushion covered the whole top and a similar one was underneath. Someone sleeping on the floor under the bed would be just as comfortable as someone on top, but maybe hidden from unwanted intruders. Several large, brightly colored pillows were scattered across the top, but there were no coverings, neither sheets nor blankets. Someone with fur wouldn't need them, of course. The room was warm enough that Jeff didn't think he'd need any either. Heated air must be coming in somewhere. Around the lights, maybe?

The snug contained little more than the bed. Two wooden stools were next to a low table, and a wood carving occupied a shelf. Another shelf had a mirror and a variety of combs and brushes. Pale fur was caught between their bristles, mementos of the previous occupant. He didn't see any sign of an entertainment system.

An open alcove served as a washroom, with what looked like a shower but no tub. Jeff gratefully made use of its strange toilet, glad he didn't have to use a litter box, but wishing for some TP. A little privacy would have been nice, too. When he finished, the cleansing up-rush of foam and rinse water followed by a blast of warm, dry air caught him by surprise.

Taking off all but his briefs and medallion, he dumped his clothes on his backpack and boots, next to the bed. Its surface was just as soft as it looked, and there was a large red pillow that was particularly comfortable. A nap would be nice.
