#5 of The Road Beyond Rome

Honestly, I didn't plan on putting any yiff in this scene, but the story just kinda went there on its own. Not like I'm stopping it. You also get a better explanation of the magics involved in this world, for those of you following the story.

Commission for Krater

Krater rolled out of the way of a black streak through the air, his own death contained in the rune passing over his shoulder. He didn't expect it to turn after missing him, and it slammed into one of the bands of his mage armor. Band and spell vanished with a flash of light while Krater stood.

Raising his arms, the bearoo summoned hundreds of tiny runes. Each floated out of the grassy earth and interlocked with its neighbors, forming a tight wall around Krater. Though difficult to see through, no wall was stronger, not that he'd ever seen. Eight of the kudu mages stepped toward the purple barrier, each cloaked in their black armor.

"To approach is death!" Krater shouted with more confidence than he felt. "Stay back, or your lives are forfeit!" Not one slowed a hair.

Three days on the road was enough for Krater to explain the how and why of raising Saelus from the grave, though he doubted the lion understood much of the more arcane details behind it. "I've just never seen green spells do anything of the sort," he said, glancing at a signpost and taking the fork toward Carthage. "Red magic might be able to manage something similar, but only black spells behave this way."

Saelus gestured with the crude spear he'd made the day before. "What about you? I've seen you cast spells that - by your own word - are firmly blue or orange." A breeze ruffled through his mane, giving the downwind mage a good whiff of Saelus' sweaty trail odor.

"Well, I suppose... It would have to be a lens." He coughed, moving to the lion's other side. "You wouldn't happen to mind if we had this conversation, say, in that stream over there, would you?"

With a chuckle, the lion glanced at the narrow rivulet. "Do I really smell so bad?"

"My dear, if you haven't bathed by tonight, I'm not sleeping within thirty feet of you." Krater stepped off the road, heading for the stream. "We'll just use the bushes there for cover." Taking off his small pack, he dropped it near the bank and began disrobing.

"I suppose you get used to it in the legion." Saelus shrugged and tossed his spear aside, following suit. "What were you saying about a lens?"

Crisp, clear water met Krater's foot as he dipped it in. He smiled and sank to his chest, enjoying the coolness out of the sun's tyrannical heat. The stream was deeper than he'd thought, only bending his knees a little to submerge himself so far. "It isn't something discussed often, even most mages haven't heard of the lenses." His brow furrowed with worry. "Special gemstones, exceptionally rare. They can change the color of a spell."

Saelus jumped into the water, splashing Krater's face. The lion grinned at him, scooping some water and pouring it over his head to rinse out his mane. "Is that what you use?"

Brushing droplets from his eyes and enjoying his view of the lion, Krater shook his head. "I have a prism. Entirely different, and even more rare. I've not so much as heard of another still existing, though I've caught wind of a few others having broken." He lifted his palm, and in a flash of purple, the clear prism appeared on his hand. "Lenses merely alter color, they don't let you access different spells. A prism, however, that's something truly special. As long as it receives sunlight, it can harness the very power of the sun to use for spells of any kind, in whatever color the mage uses."

Regarding the strange form curiously, Saelus rubbed his chin. "However did you come upon it?"

"It was a long time ago." He sent the prism back to its hiding place in his bag. "I don't like talking about it."

"You don't have to say anything, Krater. Not if you don't want to." Saelus waded closer and put his arms around the bearoo, squeezing gently.

"No, it's alright," Krater said, nuzzling Saelus' soaked chest. "My mother was a fairly skilled mage, particularly with illusions. It's a specialty of purple magic, but even I can't do some of what she did. She was always improving, perfecting her technique. For years she was certain she could turn lightning itself into a spell of incredible power, an illusion visible to an entire nation. She was wrong.

"When I arrived in the field," the bearoo continued, "she was preparing to cast her spell. I suppose the bolt came before she was ready, but she tried casting it anyway. All I saw was a bright flash of light, with a thunder like you can't imagine. But when I could see again... there was a rune I didn't recognize, shimmering in seven colors. I found the prism beside her body."

One of Saelus' fingers brushed away a tear Krater didn't know was there. "I'm sure she'd be very proud of you, Krater." The lion hugged him tighter, pressing their bodies together in the stream. "I know I am. Thank you for telling me."

Krater leaned into his lover's embrace, a small smile reaching his muzzle. "I love you, Saelus." The grip around him held firm, the lion's low, rumbling purr beginning to build up. The two held close for several minutes, trading a few kisses until the big lion suddenly dropped them both down into the water. Sputtering as they came back up, Krater let go to wipe the water off his face.

"Sorry, you hadn't washed your ears yet," Saelus teased. He brought his paws to Krater's hips, holding steady and locking eyes. "Come to think of it, you haven't really washed much at all, just soaking."

Put at ease by the lion's charm, Krater smiled, staring back and feeling his heart melt into those amber eyes. "Might you care to help me out with that? There are a few places I have trouble reaching."

"I just might." Saelus lifted the bearoo up out of the water, setting him down on the bank with his legs still submerged. "Is this one of those places you need help with?" Saelus asked, one huge paw gently stroking Krater's sheath.

"Definitely won't stop you from starting there," Krater murred. "You do whatever you like, love." The tip of his cock peered out as Saelus shifted his grasp to toy with the bearoo's balls. Tilting his head back, Krater closed his eyes and smiled, taking deep breaths. Another paw rubbed at his belly, soothing him completely.

A low moan escaped Krater when the lion's tongue met his shaft, followed shortly by soft lips and a warm maw. "Gods," he breathed, swimming in pleasure as more and more of his cock slid out of his sheath and into the waiting muzzle. Saelus began bobbing, tongue flicking over the tip whenever it could reach. Krater clutched the bank of the stream, supporting himself as the lion moved one paw to his ass, lightly squeezing the cheeks.

Both lovers released hums and murrs, happy to be together. Saelus took Krater's shaft into his throat just as he slipped a finger into the tight hole hiding between those cheeks, earning a deep moan. The bearoo felt himself drawing closer to the edge, letting himself buck ever so slightly between the maw over his cock and the finger in his ass. He grunted when a second finger entered him, wriggling about with its partner inside his hole.

Losing himself completely, Krater's seed burst out of him, straight down his lover's throat. The fingers inside him continued working his hole as more hot cum spilled forth. Saelus drank it down before popping off, catching a few spurts on his face as he stood up fully. Krater simply let the pleasure work through him, the last of his seed dribbling out of his cock.

Saelus tsked. "All that work and it's messier than when we started."

"Looks like I'm not the only one," Krater chuckled. "Perhaps we should actually get cleaned up."

"Fine by me, I got what I was after," Saelus said with a wink. He pulled his lover into a tight hug once more, dropping a kiss on his nose. "I love you, Krater." The two quickly finished bathing, using a spell to dry off before donning their clothes once more and continuing down the road, arms draped over each other's shoulders.
